Prescribed singular sets for stationary harmonic maps

A central conjecture in the regularity theory of harmonic maps asserts that the singular set of a stationary harmonic map has codimension at least three. In this paper, we construct counterexamples to this folklore conjecture. We construct stationary harmonic maps whose singular sets $S$ satisfies $\dim S=n-2$ and $\mathcal{H}^{n-2}(S)=0$ . The target is a smooth compact manifold diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{T}^3$, with metric arbitrarily close in $C^\infty$ to the standard product metric.

Geometric sets of elliptic equations with Dini coefficients

We study divergence-form elliptic equations with Dini coefficients, extending the frameworks of \cite{NV} for Lipschitz coefficients and \cite{HJ1} for Hölder coefficients. We first establish an almost monotonicity property for the doubling index under merely continuous coefficients. This leads to weak volume estimates for critical sets and uniform volume estimates for nodal sets. The Dini assumption is essential here since we construct an example with continuous coefficients and bounded doubling index whose nodal set has infinite measure. We also prove polynomial growth estimates for sub-level sets. Using a different approach, we establish quantitative uniqueness of tangent maps and a cone-splitting principle, which yield explicit Minkowski-type estimates for critical sets. Finally, combined with the results of Kenig--Zhao \cite{KZ4}, our estimates give measure bounds for boundary critical sets.

The Bounded Diameter Conjecture and Sharp Geometric Estimates for Mean Curvature Flow

We show that the intrinsic diameter of mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is uniformly bounded as one approaches the first singular time $T$. This confirms the bounded diameter conjecture of Haslhofer. In addition, we establish several sharp quantitative estimates: the second fundamental form $A$ has uniformly bounded $L^1$-norm on each time slice, $A$ belongs to the weak $L^3$ space on the space-time region, and the singular set $\mathcal{S}$ has finite $\mathcal{H}^1$-Hausdorff measure. All of the results are optimal due to the marriage ring example and our results do not require any convexity assumptions on the surfaces. Furthermore, our arguments extend naturally to flows through singularities, yielding the same sharp estimates.

The Nodal Sets of Solutions to Parabolic Equations

In this paper, we study the parabolic equations $\partial_t u=\partial_j\left(a^{ij}(x,t)\partial_iu\right)+b^j(x,t)\partial_ju+c(x,t)u$ in a domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$ under the condition that $a^{ij}$ are Lipschitz continuous. Consider the nodal set $Z_t=\{x: u(x,t)=0\}$ at a time $t$-slice. Simple examples show that the singular set $\mathcal{S}_t=\{x: u(x,t)=|\nabla_x u|(x,t)=0\}$ may coincide with nodal set. This makes the methods used in the study of nodal sets for elliptic equations fail, rendering the parabolic case much more complicated. The current strongest results in the literature establish the finiteness of the $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure of $Z_t$, assuming either $n=1$ by Angenent or that the coefficients are time-independent and analytic by Lin. With general coefficients, the codimension-one estimate was obtained under some doubling assumption by Han-Lin but only for space-time nodal sets. In the first part, we prove that $\mathcal{H}^{n-1}(Z_t) < \infty$ in full generality, i.e. for any dimension, with time-dependent coefficients and with merely Lipschitz regular leading coefficients $a^{ij}$. In the second part, we study the evolutionary behavior of nodal sets. When $n=1$, it is proved by Angenent that the number of nodal points is non-increasing in time. For the $n$-dimensional case, we construct examples showing that measure monotonicity fails. In contrast, we prove dimension monotonicity, i.e., the Hausdorff dimension of the nodal set is non-increasing in time. This is the first monotonicity property for nodal sets in general dimensions. All the assumptions here are sharp.

Finite Diffeomorphism Theorem for manifolds with lower Ricci curvature and bounded energy

In this paper we prove that the space $\cM(n,\rv,D,Λ):=\{(M^n,g) \text{ closed }: ~~\Ric\ge -(n-1),~\Vol(M)\ge \rv>0, \diam(M)\le D \text{ and } \int_{M}|\Rm|^{n/2}\le Λ\}$ has at most $C(n,\rv,D,Λ)$ many diffeomorphism types. This removes the upper Ricci curvature bound of Anderson-Cheeger's finite diffeomorphism theorem in \cite{AnCh}. Furthermore, if $M$ is Kähler surface, the Riemann curvature $L^2$ bound could be replaced by the scalar curvature $L^2$ bound.

Volume Estimates for Singular sets and Critical Sets of Elliptic Equations with Hölder Coefficients

Consider the solutions $u$ to the elliptic equation $\mathcal{L}(u) = \partial_i(a^{ij}(x) \partial_j u) + b^i(x) \partial_i u + c(x) u= 0$ with $a^{ij}$ assumed only to be Hölder continuous. In this paper we prove an explicit bound for $(n-2)$-dimensional Minkowski estimates of singular set $\mathcal{S}(u) = \{ x \in B_1 : u(x) = |\nabla u(x)| = 0\}$ and critical set $\mathcal{C}(u) \equiv \{ x\in B_{1} : |\nabla u(x)| = 0 \}$ in terms of the bound on doubling index, depending on $c \equiv 0$ or not. Here the Hölder assumption is sharp as it is the weakest condition in order to define the critical set of $u$ according to elliptic estimates. We can also obtain an optimal improvement on Cheeger-Naber-Valtorta's volume estimates on each quantitative stratum $\mathcal{S}^k_{η, r}$. The main difficulty in this situation is the lack of monotonicity formula which is essential to the quantitative stratification. In our proof, one key ingredient is a new almost monotonicity formula for doubling index under the Hölder assumption. Another key ingredient is the quantitative uniqueness of tangent maps. It deserves to note that our almost monotonicity is sufficient to address all the difficulties arising from the absence of monotonicity in the analysis of differential equations. We believe the idea could be applied to other relevant study.

Weak scalar curvature lower bounds along Ricci flow

In this paper, we study Ricci flow on compact manifolds with a continuous initial metric. It was known from Simon that the Ricci flow exists for a short time. We prove that the scalar curvature lower bound is preserved along the Ricci flow if the initial metric has a scalar curvature lower bound in distributional sense provided that the initial metric is $W^{1,p}$ for some $n<p\le \infty$. As an application, we use this result to study the relation between Yamabe invariant and Ricci flat metrics. We prove that if the Yamabe invariant is nonpositive and the scalar curvature is nonnegative in distributional sense, then the manifold is isometric to a Ricci flat manifold.

Removable singularity of positive mass theorem with continuous metrics

In this paper, we consider asymptotically flat Riemannnian manifolds $(M^n,g)$ with $C^0$ metric $g$ and $g$ is smooth away from a closed bounded subset $Σ$ and the scalar curvature $R_g\ge 0$ on $M\setminus Σ$. For given $n\le p\le \infty$, if $g\in C^0\cap W^{1,p}$ and the Hausdorff measure $\mathcal{H}^{n-\frac{p}{p-1}}(Σ)<\infty$ when $n\le p<\infty$ or $\mathcal{H}^{n-1}(Σ)=0$ when $p=\infty$, then we prove that the ADM mass of each end is nonnegative. Furthermore, if the ADM mass of some end is zero, then we prove that $(M^n,g)$ is isometric to the Euclidean space by showing the manifold has nonnegative Ricci curvature in RCD sense. This extends the result of [Lee-LeFloch2015] from spin to non-spin, also improves the result of [Shi-Tam2018] and [Lee2013]. Moreover, for $p=\infty$, this confirms a conjecture of Lee [Lee2013].

$L^2$ Curvature Bounds on Manifolds with Bounded Ricci Curvature

Consider a Riemannian manifold with bounded Ricci curvature $|\Ric|\leq n-1$ and the noncollapsing lower volume bound $\Vol(B_1(p))>\rv>0$. The first main result of this paper is to prove that we have the $L^2$ curvature bound $\fint_{B_1(p)}|\Rm|^2 < C(n,\rv)$, which proves the $L^2$ conjecture. In order to prove this, we will need to first show the following structural result for limits. Namely, if $(M^n_j,d_j,p_j) \longrightarrow (X,d,p)$ is a $GH$-limit of noncollapsed manifolds with bounded Ricci curvature, then the singular set $\cS(X)$ is $n-4$ rectifiable with the uniform Hausdorff measure estimates $H^{n-4}\big(\cS(X)\cap B_1\big)<C(n,\rv)$, which in particular proves the $n-4$-finiteness conjecture of Cheeger-Colding. We will see as a consequence of the proof that for $n-4$ a.e. $x\in \cS(X)$ that the tangent cone of $X$ at $x$ is unique and isometric to $\dR^{n-4}\times C(S^3/Γ_x)$ for some $Γ_x\subseteq O(4)$ which acts freely away from the origin.

Partial regularity of harmonic maps from Alexandrov spaces

In this paper, we prove the Lipschitz regularity of continuous harmonic maps from an finite dimensional Alexandrov space to a compact smooth Riemannian manifold. This solves a conjecture of F. H. Lin in \cite{lin97}. The proof extends the argument of Huang-Wang \cite {hua-w10}.

On the deformation of ball packings

In this paper, we study the geometric aspects of ball packings on $(M,\mathcal{T})$, where $\mathcal{T}$ is a triangulation on a 3-manifold $M$. We introduce a combinatorial Yamabe invariant $Y_{\mathcal{T}}$, depending on the topology of $M$ and the combinatoric of $\mathcal{T}$. We prove that $Y_{\mathcal{T}}$ is attainable if and only if there is a constant curvature packing, and the combinatorial Yamabe problem can be solved by minimizing Cooper-Rivin-Glickenstein functional. We then study the combinatorial Yamabe flow introduced by Glickenstein \cite{G0}-\cite{G2}. We first prove a small energy convergence theorem which says that the flow would converge to a constant curvature metric if the initial energy is close in a quantitative way to the energy of a constant curvature metric. We shall also prove: although the flow may develop singularities in finite time, there is a natural way to extend the solution of the flow so as it exists for all time. Moreover, if the triangulation $\mathcal{T}$ is regular (that is, the number of tetrahedrons surrounding each vertex are all equal), then the combinatorial Yamabe flow converges exponentially fast to a constant curvature packing.

Rectifiability of Singular Sets in Noncollapsed Spaces with Ricci Curvature bounded below

This paper is concerned with the structure of Gromov-Hausdorff limit spaces $(M^n_i,g_i,p_i)\stackrel{d_{GH}}{\longrightarrow} (X^n,d,p)$ of Riemannian manifolds satisfying a uniform lower Ricci curvature bound $Rc_{M^n_i}\geq -(n-1)$ as well as the noncollapsing assumption $Vol(B_1(p_i))>v>0$. In such cases, there is a filtration of the singular set, $S_0\subset S_1\cdots S_{n-1}:= S$, where $S^k:= \{x\in X:\text{ no tangent cone at $x$ is }(k+1)\text{-symmetric}\}$; equivalently no tangent cone splits off a Euclidean factor $\mathbb{R}^{k+1}$ isometrically. Moreover, by \cite{ChCoI}, $\dim S^k\leq k$. However, little else has been understood about the structure of the singular set $S$. Our first result for such limit spaces $X^n$ states that $S^k$ is $k$-rectifiable. In fact, we will show that for $k$-a.e. $x\in S^k$, {\it every} tangent cone $X_x$ at $x$ is $k$-symmetric i.e. that $X_x= \mathbb{R}^k\times C(Y)$ where $C(Y)$ might depend on the particular $X_x$. We use this to show that there exists $ε=ε(n,v)$, and a $(n-2)$-rectifible set $S^{n-2}_ε$, with finite $(n-2)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure $H^{n-2}(S_ε^{n-2})<C(n,v)$, such that $X^n\setminus S^{n-2}_ε$ is bi-Hölder equivalent to a smooth riemannian manifold. This improves the regularity results of \cite{ChCoI}. Additionally, we will see that tangent cones are unique of a subset of Hausdorff $(n-2)$ dimensional measure zero. Our analysis is based on several new ideas, including a sharp cone-splitting theorem and a geometric transformation theorem, which will allow us to control the degeneration of harmonic functions on these neck regions.

On the deformation of inversive distance circle packings, III

Given a triangulated surface $M$, we use Ge-Xu's $α$-flow \cite{Ge-Xu1} to deform any initial inversive distance circle packing metric to a metric with constant $α$-curvature. More precisely, we prove that the inversive distance circle packing with constant $α$-curvature is unique if $αχ(M)\leq 0$, which generalize Andreev-Thurston's rigidity results for circle packing with constant cone angles. We further prove that the solution to Ge-Xu's $α$-flow can always be extended to a solution that exists for all time and converges exponentially fast to constant $α$-curvature. Finally, we give some combinatorial and topological obstacles for the existence of constant $α$-curvature metrics.

$ε$-regularity for shrinking Ricci solitons and Ricci flows

In [Cheeger-Tian 2005], Cheeger-Tian proved an $ε$-regularity theorem for $4$-dimensional Einstein manifolds without volume assumption. They conjectured that similar results should hold for critical metrics with constant scalar curvature, shrinking Ricci solitons, Ricci flows in $4$-dimensional manifolds and higher dimensional Einstein manifolds. In this paper we consider all these problems. First, we construct counterexamples to the conjecture for $4$-dimensional critical metrics and counterexamples to the conjecture for higher dimensional Einstein manifolds. For $4$-dimensional shrinking Ricci solitons, we prove an $ε$-regularity theorem which confirms Cheeger-Tian's conjecture with a universal constant $ε$. For Ricci flow, we reduce Cheeger-Tian's $ε$-regularity conjecture to a backward Pseudolocality estimate. By proving a global backward Pseudolocality theorem, we can prove a global $ε$-regularity theorem which partially confirms Cheeger-Tian's conjecture for Ricci flow. Furthermore, as a consequence of the $ε$-regularity, we can show by using the structure theorem of Naber-Tian \cite{NaTi} that a collapsed limit of shrinking Ricci solitons with bounded $L^2$ curvature has a smooth Riemannian orbifold structure away from a finite number of points.

On the deformation of inversive distance circle packings, II

We show that the results in \cite{Ge-Jiang1} are still true in hyperbolic background geometry setting, that is, the solution to Chow-Luo's combinatorial Ricci flow can always be extended to a solution that exists for all time, furthermore, the extended solution converges exponentially fast if and only if there exists a metric with zero curvature. We also give some results about the range of discrete Gaussian curvatures, which generalize Andreev-Thurston's theorem to some extent.

On the deformation of inversive distance circle packings

In this paper, we generalize Chow-Luo's combinatorial Ricci flow to inversive distance circle packing setting. Although the solution to the generalized flow may develop singularities in finite time, we can always extend the solution so as it exists for all time and converges exponentially fast. Thus the generalized flow can be used to deform any inversive distance circle packing to a unique packing with prescribed cone angle. We also give partial results on the range of all admissible cone angles, which generalize the classical Andreev-Thurston's theorem.

On the deformation of discrete conformal factors on surfaces

In \cite{Luo0}, Feng Luo conjectured that the discrete Yamabe flow will converge to the constant curvature PL-metric after finite number of surgeries on the triangulation. In this paper, we prove that the flow can always be extended (without surgeries) to a solution that converges exponentially fast to the constant curvature PL-metric.

Bergman Kernels and algebraic structure of limit space for a sequence of almost Kähler-Ricci solitons

In this paper, we give a lower bound of Bergman kernels for a sequence of almost Kähler-Einstein Fano manifolds, or more general, a sequence of Fano manifolds with almost Kähler-Ricci solitons. This generalizes a result by Donaldson-Sun, Tian for Kähler-Einstein manifolds sequence with positive scalar curvature. As an application of our result, we prove that the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of sequence is homomorphic to a log terminal $Q$-Fano variety which admits a Kähler-Ricci soliton on its smooth part.
