New general dependence measures: construction, estimation and application to high-frequency stock returns

We propose a set of dependence measures that are non-linear, local, invariant to a wide range of transformations on the marginals, can show tail and risk asymmetries, are always well-defined, are easy to estimate and can be used on any dataset. We propose a nonparametric estimator and prove its consistency and asymptotic normality. Thereby we significantly improve on existing (extreme) dependence measures used in asset pricing and statistics. To show practical utility, we use these measures on high-frequency stock return data around market distress events such as the 2010 Flash Crash and during the GFC. Contrary to ubiquitously used correlations we find that our measures clearly show tail asymmetry, non-linearity, lack of diversification and endogenous buildup of risks present during these distress events. Additionally, our measures anticipate large (joint) losses during the Flash Crash while also anticipating the bounce back and flagging the subsequent market fragility. Our findings have implications for risk management, portfolio construction and hedging at any frequency.

PlankAssembly: Robust 3D Reconstruction from Three Orthographic Views with Learnt Shape Programs

In this paper, we develop a new method to automatically convert 2D line drawings from three orthographic views into 3D CAD models. Existing methods for this problem reconstruct 3D models by back-projecting the 2D observations into 3D space while maintaining explicit correspondence between the input and output. Such methods are sensitive to errors and noises in the input, thus often fail in practice where the input drawings created by human designers are imperfect. To overcome this difficulty, we leverage the attention mechanism in a Transformer-based sequence generation model to learn flexible mappings between the input and output. Further, we design shape programs which are suitable for generating the objects of interest to boost the reconstruction accuracy and facilitate CAD modeling applications. Experiments on a new benchmark dataset show that our method significantly outperforms existing ones when the inputs are noisy or incomplete.

Meta-DM: Applications of Diffusion Models on Few-Shot Learning

In the field of few-shot learning (FSL), extensive research has focused on improving network structures and training strategies. However, the role of data processing modules has not been fully explored. Therefore, in this paper, we propose Meta-DM, a generalized data processing module for FSL problems based on diffusion models. Meta-DM is a simple yet effective module that can be easily integrated with existing FSL methods, leading to significant performance improvements in both supervised and unsupervised settings. We provide a theoretical analysis of Meta-DM and evaluate its performance on several algorithms. Our experiments show that combining Meta-DM with certain methods achieves state-of-the-art results.

Liouville--type Theorems for Steady MHD and Hall--MHD Equations in $\R^2 \times \T$

In this paper, we study the Liouville--type theorems for three--dimensional stationary incompressible MHD and Hall--MHD systems in a slab with periodic boundary condition. We show that, under the assumptions that $(u^θ,b^θ)$ or $(u^r,b^r)$ is axisymmetric, or $(ru^r,rb^r)$ is bounded, any smooth bounded solution to the MHD or Hall--MHD system with local Dirichlet integral growing as an arbitrary power function must be constant. This hugely improves the result of \cite[Theorem 1.2]{pan2021Liouville}, where the Dirichlet integral of $\mathbf{u}$ is assumed to be finite. Motivated by \cite[Bang--Gui--Wang--Xie, 2022, {\it arXiv:2205.13259}]{bang2022Liouvilletype}, our proof relies on establishing Saint--Venant's estimates associated with our problem, and the result in the current paper extends that for stationary Navier--Stokes equations shown by \cite{bang2022Liouvilletype} to MHD and Hall--MHD equations. To achieve this, more intricate estimates are needed to handle the terms involving $\mathbf{b}$ properly.

Superconductivity in graphite-diamond hybrid

Search for new high-temperature superconductors and insight into their superconducting mechanism are of fundamental importance in condensed matter physics. The discovery of near-room temperature superconductivity at more than a million atmospheres ushers in a new era for superconductors. However, the critical task of identifying materials with comparable superconductivity at near or ambient pressure remains. Carbon materials can always lead to intriguing surprises due to their structural diversity and electronic adjustability. Insulating diamond upon doping or external stimuli has achieved superconducting state. Thus, it still has a great opportunity to find superconducting ones with higher transition temperature (Tc). Here, we report an intrinsic superconducting graphite-diamond hybrid through first-principles calculations, whose atomic-resolution structural characteristics have been experimentally determined recently. The predicted Tc is approximated at 39 K at ambient pressure, and strain energizing can further boost Tc to 42 K. The strong electron-phonon coupling associated with the out-of-plane vibration of carbon atoms at the junction plays a dominant role in the superconducting transition. Our work demonstrates the great potential of such carbon materials as high-Tc superconductors, which will definitely attract extensive research.

2D hybrid CrCl2(N2C4H4)2 with tunable ferromagnetic half-metallicity

Two-dimensional ferromagnetic (2D FM) half-metal holds great potential for quantum magnetoelectronics and spintronic devices. Here, using density functional calculations and magnetic pictures, we study the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the novel van der Waals (vdW) metal-organic framework (MOF), CrCl2(N2C4H4)2, i.e. CrCl2(pyrazine)2. Our results show that CrCl2(pyrazine)2 is a 2D FM half-metal, having a strong intralayer FM coupling but a much weak interlayer one due to the vdW spacing. Its spin-polarized conduction bands are formed by the pyrazine molecular orbitals and are polarized by the robust Cr3+ local spin = 3/2. These results agree with the recent experiments [Pedersen et al., Nature Chemistry, 2018, 10, 1056]. More interestingly, CrCl2(pyrazine)2 monolayer has a strong doping tunability of the FM half-metallicity, and the FM coupling would be significantly enhanced by electron doping. Our work highlights a vital role of the organic ligand and suggests that vdW MOF is also worth exploration for new 2D magnetic materials.

Ferromagnetic half-metallicity in YBaCo2O6 and spin-states driven metal-insulator transition

Cobaltates have rich spin-states and diverse properties. Using spin-state pictures and firstprinciples calculations, here we study the electronic structure and magnetism of the mixed-valent double perovskite YBaCo2O6. We find that YBaCo2O6 is in the formal intermediate-spin (IS) Co3+/low-spin (LS) Co4+ ground state. The hopping of eg electron from IS-Co3+ to LS-Co4+ via double exchange gives rise to a ferromagnetic half-metallicity, which well accounts for the recent experiments. The reduction of both magnetization and Curie temperature by oxygen vacancies is discussed, aided with Monte Carlo simulations. We also explore several other possible spin-states and their interesting electronic/magnetic properties. Moreover, we predict that a volume expansion more than 3% would tune YBaCo2O6 into the high-spin (HS) Co3+/LS Co4+ ferromagnetic state and simultaneously drive a metal-insulator transition. Therefore, spin-states are a useful parameter for tuning the material properties of cobaltates.

Discovery of carbon-based strongest and hardest amorphous material

Carbon is likely the most fascinating element of the periodic table because of the diversity of its allotropes stemming from its variable (sp, sp2, and sp3) bonding motifs. Exploration of new forms of carbon has been an eternal theme of contemporary scientific research. Here we report on novel amorphous carbon phases containing high fraction of sp3 bonded atoms recovered after compressing fullerene C60 to previously unexplored high pressure and temperature. The synthesized carbons are the hardest and strongest amorphous materials known to date, capable of scratching diamond crystal and approaching its strength which is evidenced by complimentary mechanical tests. Photoluminescence and absorption spectra of the materials demonstrate they are semiconductors with tunable bandgaps in the range of 1.5-2.2 eV, comparable to that of amorphous silicon. A remarkable combination of the outstanding mechanical and electronic properties makes this class of amorphous carbons an excellent candidate for photovoltaic applications demanding ultrahigh strength and wear resistance.

Narrow-gap Semiconducting Superhard Amorphous Carbon with Superior Toughness

New carbon forms exhibiting extraordinary physico-chemical properties can be generated from nanostructured precursors under extreme pressure. Nevertheless, synthesis of such fascinating materials is often not well understood that results, as is the case of C60 precursor, in irreproducibility of the results and impeding further progress in the materials design. Here the semiconducting amorphous carbon having bandgaps of 0.1-0.3 eV and the advantages of isotropic superhardness and superior toughness over single-crystal diamond and inorganic glasses are produced from transformation of fullerene at high pressure and moderate temperatures. A systematic investigation of the structure and bonding evolution was carried out by using rich arsenal of complimentary characterization methods, which helps to build a model of the transformation that can be used in further high p,T synthesis of novel nanocarbon systems for advanced applications. The produced amorphous carbon materials have the potential of demanding optoelectronic applications that diamond and graphene cannot achieve

Analysis of a nonlinear free-boundary tumor model with angiogenesis and a connection between the nonnecrotic and necrotic phases

This paper is concerned with a nonlinear free boundary problem modeling the growth of spherically symmetric tumors with angiogenesis, set with a Robin boundary condition. In which, both nonnecrotic tumors and necrotic tumors are taken into consideration. The well-posedness and asymptotic behavior of solutions are studied. It is shown that there exist two thresholds, denoted by $\tildeσ$ and $σ^*$, on the surrounding nutrient concentration $\barσ$. If $\barσ\leq\tildeσ$, then the considered problem admits no stationary solution and all evolutionary tumors will finally vanish, while if $\barσ>\tildeσ$, then it admits a unique stationary solution and all evolutionary tumors will converge to this dormant tumor; moreover, the dormant tumor is nonnecrotic if $\tildeσ<\barσ\leqσ^*$ and necrotic if $\barσ>σ^*$. The connection and mutual transition between the nonnecrotic and necrotic phases are also given.

Direct Observation of Room-Temperature Dislocation Plasticity in Diamond

It is well known that diamond does not deform plastically at room temperature and usually fails in catastrophic brittle fracture. Here we demonstrate room-temperature dislocation plasticity in sub-micrometer sized diamond pillars by in-situ mechanical testing in the transmission electron microscope. We document in unprecedented details of spatio-temporal features of the dislocations introduced by the confinement-free compression, including dislocation generation and propagation. Atom-resolved observations with tomographic reconstructions show unequivocally that mixed-type dislocations with Burgers vectors of 1/2<110> are activated in the non-close-packed {001} planes of diamond under uniaxial compression of <111> and <110> directions, respectively, while being activated in the {111} planes under the <100> directional loading, indicating orientation-dependent dislocation plasticity. These results provide new insights into the mechanical behavior of diamond and stimulate reconsideration of the basic deformation mechanism in diamond as well as in other brittle covalent crystals at low temperatures.

calculation worst-case Value-at-Risk prediction using empirical data under model uncertainty

Quantification of risk positions under model uncertainty is of crucial importance from both viewpoints of external regulation and internal management. The concept of model uncertainty, sometimes also referred to as model ambiguity. Although we know the family of models, we cannot precisely decide which one to use. Given the set $\mathcal{P}$, the value of the risk measure $ρ$ varies in a range over the set of all possible models. The largest value in such a range is referred to as a worst-case value, and the corresponding model is called a worst scenario. Value-at-Risk(VaR) has become a very popular risk-measurement tool since it was first proposed. Naturally, WVaR(worst-case Value-at-Risk) attracts the attention of many researchers. Although many literatures investigated WVaR, the implications for empirical data analysis remain rare. In this paper, we proposed a special model uncertainty market model to simply the $\mathcal{P}$ to a set contain finite number of probability distributions. The model has the structure of the two-layer mixed distribution model. We used change point detection method to divide the returns series and then used EM algorithm to estimate the parameters. Finally, we calculated VaR, WVaR(worst-case Value-at-Risk) and BVaR(best-case Value-at-Risk) for four financial markets and then analyzed their different performance.

SlideVaR: a risk measure with variable risk attitudes

To find a trade-off between profitability and prudence, financial practitioners need to choose appropriate risk measures. Two key points are: Firstly, investors' risk attitudes under uncertainty conditions should be an important reference for risk measures. Secondly, risk attitudes are not absolute. For different market performance, investors have different risk attitudes. We proposed a new risk measure named SlideVaR which sufficiently reflects the different subjective attitudes of investors and the impact of market changes on investors' attitudes. We proposed the concept of risk-tail region and risk-tail sub-additivity and proved that SlideVaR satisfies several important mathematical properties. Moreover, SlideVaR has a simple and intuitive form of expression for practical application. Several simulate and empirical computations show that SlideVaR has obvious advantages in markets where the state changes frequently.

Phase Transition of Na3SbS4 Superionic Conductor and Its Impact on Ion Transport

In this work, a comprehensive research coupling experiment and computation has been performed to understand the phase transition of Na3SbS4 and to synthesize cubic Na3SbS4 (c-Na3SbS4), a high temperature phase of Na3SbS4 that is difficult to be preserved from high temperature. The formation of c-Na3SbS4 is verified by Rietveld refinement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Both experiment and theoretical calculation reveal that the ionic conductivity of c-Na3SbS4 is higher than that of t-Na3SbS4, though the values are in the same order of magnitude. Both structures allow fast ion transport.

Coexistence of multiple metastable polytypes in rhombohedral bismuth

Derivative structural polytypes coexisting with the rhombohedral A7 structure of elemental bismuth (Bi) have been discovered at ambient condition, based on microstructure analyses of pure Bi samples treated under high pressure and high temperature conditions. Three structures with atomic positions close to those of the A7 structure have been identified through first-principles calculations, showing these polytypes energetically comparable to the A7 structure under ambient condition. Simulated diffraction data are in excellent agreement with the experimental observations. We argue that previously reported variations in physical properties (e.g., density, melting point, electrical conductivity, and magnetism) in bismuth could be due to the formation of these polytypes. The coexistence of metastable derivative structural polytypes may be a widely occurring phenomenon in other elemental materials
