Possible Enhancement of Superconductivity in Ambient-Pressure La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ Thin Film

As an unconventional superconducting system capable of reaching 60 K under ambient pressure, the La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ thin film superconductor has recently become a focal point in the field of superconductivity, calling for further theoretical exploration of its possible pairing mechanisms. In this work, we employ the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation to systematically analyze the superconducting properties of a previously proposed two-site, two-orbital model for the La$_3$Ni$2$O$7$ thin film in the weakly correlated regime, with particular emphasis on its dependence on hole doping. Through a more detailed examination of the Fermi-surface topology, we find that when a $\delta$ pocket composed of the $d_{z^{2}}$ antibonding orbital emerges near the $\Gamma$ point, its nesting with the $\gamma$ pocket, together with the nesting between the $\alpha$ and $\beta$ pockets, leads to a mutual enhancement of $s{\pm}$-wave pairing at the corresponding wave vector. Furthermore, we propose that this nesting-driven enhancement of spin-fluctuation-induced pairing may provide a viable mechanism for enhancing superconductivity.

Complex structures of the Gibbons-Hawking ansatz with infinite topological type

In this paper, we study the complex structures of complete hyperk\"ahler four-manifolds of infinite topological type arising from the Gibbons-Hawking ansatz. We show that for almost all complex structures in the hyperk\"ahler family, the manifold is biholomorphic to a hypersurface in $\mathbb{C}^3$ defined by an explicit entire function. For the remaining complex structures, we further prove that the manifold is biholomorphic to the minimal resolution of a singular surface in $\mathbb{C}^3$ under certain conditions. Thus, we partially extend LeBrun's celebrated work to the context of countably many punctures.

High Expectations: An Observational Study of Programming and Cannabis Intoxication

Anecdotal evidence of cannabis use by professional programmers abounds. Recent studies have found that some professionals regularly use cannabis while programming even for work-related tasks. However, accounts of the impacts of cannabis on programming vary widely and are often contradictory. For example, some programmers claim that it impairs their ability to generate correct solutions while others claim it enhances creativity and focus. There remains a need for an empirical understanding of the true impacts of cannabis on programming. This paper presents the first controlled observational study of the effects of cannabis on programming ability. Based on a within-subjects design with over 70 participants, we find that at ecologically valid dosages, cannabis significantly impairs programming performance. Programs implemented while high contain more bugs and take longer to write (p < 0.05), a small to medium effect (0.22 <= d <= 0.44). We also did not find any evidence that high programmers generate more divergent solutions. However, programmers can accurately assess differences in their programming performance (r = 0.59), even when under the influence of cannabis. We hope that this research will facilitate evidence-based policies and help developers make informed decisions regarding cannabis use while programming.

AIM 2022 Challenge on Instagram Filter Removal: Methods and Results

This paper introduces the methods and the results of AIM 2022 challenge on Instagram Filter Removal. Social media filters transform the images by consecutive non-linear operations, and the feature maps of the original content may be interpolated into a different domain. This reduces the overall performance of the recent deep learning strategies. The main goal of this challenge is to produce realistic and visually plausible images where the impact of the filters applied is mitigated while preserving the content. The proposed solutions are ranked in terms of the PSNR value with respect to the original images. There are two prior studies on this task as the baseline, and a total of 9 teams have competed in the final phase of the challenge. The comparison of qualitative results of the proposed solutions and the benchmark for the challenge are presented in this report.
