Fixed-Dimensional and Permutation Invariant State Representation of Autonomous Driving

In this paper, we propose a new state representation method, called encoding sum and concatenation (ESC), for the state representation of decision-making in autonomous driving. Unlike existing state representation methods, ESC is applicable to a variable number of surrounding vehicles and eliminates the need for manually pre-designed sorting rules, leading to higher representation ability and generality. The proposed ESC method introduces a representation neural network (NN) to encode each surrounding vehicle into an encoding vector, and then adds these vectors to obtain the representation vector of the set of surrounding vehicles. By concatenating the set representation with other variables, such as indicators of the ego vehicle and road, we realize the fixed-dimensional and permutation invariant state representation. This paper has further proved that the proposed ESC method can realize the injective representation if the output dimension of the representation NN is greater than the number of variables of all surrounding vehicles. This means that by taking the ESC representation as policy inputs, we can find the nearly optimal representation NN and policy NN by simultaneously optimizing them using gradient-based updating. Experiments demonstrate that compared with the fixed-permutation representation method, the proposed method improves the representation ability of the surrounding vehicles, and the corresponding approximation error is reduced by 62.2%.

Revisiting, Benchmarking and Exploring API Recommendation: How Far Are We?

Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), which encapsulate the implementation of specific functions as interfaces, greatly improve the efficiency of modern software development. As numbers of APIs spring up nowadays, developers can hardly be familiar with all the APIs, and usually need to search for appropriate APIs for usage. So lots of efforts have been devoted to improving the API recommendation task. However, it has been increasingly difficult to gauge the performance of new models due to the lack of a uniform definition of the task and a standardized benchmark. For example, some studies regard the task as a code completion problem; while others recommend relative APIs given natural language queries. To reduce the challenges and better facilitate future research, in this paper, we revisit the API recommendation task and aim at benchmarking the approaches. Specifically, the paper groups the approaches into two categories according to the task definition, i.e., query-based API recommendation and code-based API recommendation. We study 11 recently-proposed approaches along with 4 widely-used IDEs. One benchmark named as APIBench is then built for the two respective categories of approaches. Based on APIBench, we distill some actionable insights and challenges for API recommendation. We also achieve some implications and directions for improving the performance of recommending APIs, including data source selection, appropriate query reformulation, low resource setting, and cross-domain adaptation.

BBS-KWS:The Mandarin Keyword Spotting System Won the Video Keyword Wakeup Challenge

This paper introduces the system submitted by the Yidun NISP team to the video keyword wakeup challenge. We propose a mandarin keyword spotting system (KWS) with several novel and effective improvements, including a big backbone (B) model, a keyword biasing (B) mechanism and the introduction of syllable modeling units (S). By considering this, we term the total system BBS-KWS as an abbreviation. The BBS-KWS system consists of an end-to-end automatic speech recognition (ASR) module and a KWS module. The ASR module converts speech features to text representations, which applies a big backbone network to the acoustic model and takes syllable modeling units into consideration as well. In addition, the keyword biasing mechanism is used to improve the recall rate of keywords in the ASR inference stage. The KWS module applies multiple criteria to determine the absence or presence of the keywords, such as multi-stage matching, fuzzy matching, and connectionist temporal classification (CTC) prefix score. To further improve our system, we conduct semi-supervised learning on the CN-Celeb dataset for better generalization. In the VKW task, the BBS-KWS system achieves significant gains over the baseline and won the first place in two tracks.

Optimal Variable Speed Limit Control Strategy on Freeway Segments under Fog Conditions

Fog is a critical external factor that threatens traffic safety on freeways. Variable speed limit (VSL) control can effectively harmonize vehicle speed and improve safety. However, most existing weather-related VSL controllers are limited to adapt to the dynamic traffic environment. This study developed optimal VSL control strategy under fog conditions with fully consideration of factors that affect traffic safety risks. The crash risk under fog conditions was estimated using a crash risk prediction model based on Bayesian logistic regression. The traffic flow with VSL control was simulated by a modified cell transmission model (MCTM). The optimal factors of VSL control were obtained by solving an optimization problem that coordinated safety and mobility with the help of the genetic algorithm. An example of I-405 in California, USA was designed to simulate and evaluate the effects of the proposed VSL control strategy. The optimal VSL control factors under fog conditions were compared with sunny conditions, and different placements of VSL signs were evaluated. Results showed that the optimal VSL control strategy under fog conditions changed the speed limit more cautiously. The VSL control under fog conditions in this study effectively reduced crash risks without significantly increasing travel time, which is up to 37.15% reduction of risks and only 0.48% increase of total travel time. The proposed VSL control strategy is expected to be of great use in the development of VSL systems to enhance freeway safety under fog conditions.

TransBTS: Multimodal Brain Tumor Segmentation Using Transformer

Transformer, which can benefit from global (long-range) information modeling using self-attention mechanisms, has been successful in natural language processing and 2D image classification recently. However, both local and global features are crucial for dense prediction tasks, especially for 3D medical image segmentation. In this paper, we for the first time exploit Transformer in 3D CNN for MRI Brain Tumor Segmentation and propose a novel network named TransBTS based on the encoder-decoder structure. To capture the local 3D context information, the encoder first utilizes 3D CNN to extract the volumetric spatial feature maps. Meanwhile, the feature maps are reformed elaborately for tokens that are fed into Transformer for global feature modeling. The decoder leverages the features embedded by Transformer and performs progressive upsampling to predict the detailed segmentation map. Extensive experimental results on both BraTS 2019 and 2020 datasets show that TransBTS achieves comparable or higher results than previous state-of-the-art 3D methods for brain tumor segmentation on 3D MRI scans. Language Models are Good Translators

Recent years have witnessed the rapid advance in neural machine translation (NMT), the core of which lies in the encoder-decoder architecture. Inspired by the recent progress of large-scale pre-trained language models on machine translation in a limited scenario, we firstly demonstrate that a single language model (LM4MT) can achieve comparable performance with strong encoder-decoder NMT models on standard machine translation benchmarks, using the same training data and similar amount of model parameters. LM4MT can also easily utilize source-side texts as additional supervision. Though modeling the source- and target-language texts with the same mechanism, LM4MT can provide unified representations for both source and target sentences, which can better transfer knowledge across languages. Extensive experiments on pivot-based and zero-shot translation tasks show that LM4MT can outperform the encoder-decoder NMT model by a large margin.

Adv-Makeup: A New Imperceptible and Transferable Attack on Face Recognition

Deep neural networks, particularly face recognition models, have been shown to be vulnerable to both digital and physical adversarial examples. However, existing adversarial examples against face recognition systems either lack transferability to black-box models, or fail to be implemented in practice. In this paper, we propose a unified adversarial face generation method - Adv-Makeup, which can realize imperceptible and transferable attack under black-box setting. Adv-Makeup develops a task-driven makeup generation method with the blending module to synthesize imperceptible eye shadow over the orbital region on faces. And to achieve transferability, Adv-Makeup implements a fine-grained meta-learning adversarial attack strategy to learn more general attack features from various models. Compared to existing techniques, sufficient visualization results demonstrate that Adv-Makeup is capable to generate much more imperceptible attacks under both digital and physical scenarios. Meanwhile, extensive quantitative experiments show that Adv-Makeup can significantly improve the attack success rate under black-box setting, even attacking commercial systems.

Delving into Data: Effectively Substitute Training for Black-box Attack

Deep models have shown their vulnerability when processing adversarial samples. As for the black-box attack, without access to the architecture and weights of the attacked model, training a substitute model for adversarial attacks has attracted wide attention. Previous substitute training approaches focus on stealing the knowledge of the target model based on real training data or synthetic data, without exploring what kind of data can further improve the transferability between the substitute and target models. In this paper, we propose a novel perspective substitute training that focuses on designing the distribution of data used in the knowledge stealing process. More specifically, a diverse data generation module is proposed to synthesize large-scale data with wide distribution. And adversarial substitute training strategy is introduced to focus on the data distributed near the decision boundary. The combination of these two modules can further boost the consistency of the substitute model and target model, which greatly improves the effectiveness of adversarial attack. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficacy of our method against state-of-the-art competitors under non-target and target attack settings. Detailed visualization and analysis are also provided to help understand the advantage of our method.

Recurrent Model Predictive Control

This paper proposes an off-line algorithm, called Recurrent Model Predictive Control (RMPC), to solve general nonlinear finite-horizon optimal control problems. Unlike traditional Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithms, it can make full use of the current computing resources and adaptively select the longest model prediction horizon. Our algorithm employs a recurrent function to approximate the optimal policy, which maps the system states and reference values directly to the control inputs. The number of prediction steps is equal to the number of recurrent cycles of the learned policy function. With an arbitrary initial policy function, the proposed RMPC algorithm can converge to the optimal policy by directly minimizing the designed loss function. We further prove the convergence and optimality of the RMPC algorithm thorough Bellman optimality principle, and demonstrate its generality and efficiency using two numerical examples.

Rethinking the Value of Transformer Components

Transformer becomes the state-of-the-art translation model, while it is not well studied how each intermediate component contributes to the model performance, which poses significant challenges for designing optimal architectures. In this work, we bridge this gap by evaluating the impact of individual component (sub-layer) in trained Transformer models from different perspectives. Experimental results across language pairs, training strategies, and model capacities show that certain components are consistently more important than the others. We also report a number of interesting findings that might help humans better analyze, understand and improve Transformer models. Based on these observations, we further propose a new training strategy that can improves translation performance by distinguishing the unimportant components in training.

Long-Term Cloth-Changing Person Re-identification

Person re-identification (Re-ID) aims to match a target person across camera views at different locations and times. Existing Re-ID studies focus on the short-term cloth-consistent setting, under which a person re-appears in different camera views with the same outfit. A discriminative feature representation learned by existing deep Re-ID models is thus dominated by the visual appearance of clothing. In this work, we focus on a much more difficult yet practical setting where person matching is conducted over long-duration, e.g., over days and months and therefore inevitably under the new challenge of changing clothes. This problem, termed Long-Term Cloth-Changing (LTCC) Re-ID is much understudied due to the lack of large scale datasets. The first contribution of this work is a new LTCC dataset containing people captured over a long period of time with frequent clothing changes. As a second contribution, we propose a novel Re-ID method specifically designed to address the cloth-changing challenge. Specifically, we consider that under cloth-changes, soft-biometrics such as body shape would be more reliable. We, therefore, introduce a shape embedding module as well as a cloth-elimination shape-distillation module aiming to eliminate the now unreliable clothing appearance features and focus on the body shape information. Extensive experiments show that superior performance is achieved by the proposed model on the new LTCC dataset. The code and dataset will be available at https://naiq.github.io/LTCC_Perosn_ReID.html.

Ultrasound Liver Fibrosis Diagnosis using Multi-indicator guided Deep Neural Networks

Accurate analysis of the fibrosis stage plays very important roles in follow-up of patients with chronic hepatitis B infection. In this paper, a deep learning framework is presented for automatically liver fibrosis prediction. On contrary of previous works, our approach can take use of the information provided by multiple ultrasound images. An indicator-guided learning mechanism is further proposed to ease the training of the proposed model. This follows the workflow of clinical diagnosis and make the prediction procedure interpretable. To support the training, a dataset is well-collected which contains the ultrasound videos/images, indicators and labels of 229 patients. As demonstrated in the experimental results, our proposed model shows its effectiveness by achieving the state-of-the-art performance, specifically, the accuracy is 65.6%(20% higher than previous best).

A New Screening Method for COVID-19 based on Ocular Feature Recognition by Machine Learning Tools

The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has affected several million people. With the outbreak of the epidemic, many researchers are devoting themselves to the COVID-19 screening system. The standard practices for rapid risk screening of COVID-19 are the CT imaging or RT-PCR (real-time polymerase chain reaction). However, these methods demand professional efforts of the acquisition of CT images and saliva samples, a certain amount of waiting time, and most importantly prohibitive examination fee in some countries. Recently, some literatures have shown that the COVID-19 patients usually accompanied by ocular manifestations consistent with the conjunctivitis, including conjunctival hyperemia, chemosis, epiphora, or increased secretions. After more than four months study, we found that the confirmed cases of COVID-19 present the consistent ocular pathological symbols; and we propose a new screening method of analyzing the eye-region images, captured by common CCD and CMOS cameras, could reliably make a rapid risk screening of COVID-19 with very high accuracy. We believe a system implementing such an algorithm should assist the triage management or the clinical diagnosis. To further evaluate our algorithm and approved by the Ethics Committee of Shanghai public health clinic center of Fudan University, we conduct a study of analyzing the eye-region images of 303 patients (104 COVID-19, 131 pulmonary, and 68 ocular patients), as well as 136 healthy people. Remarkably, our results of COVID-19 patients in testing set consistently present similar ocular pathological symbols; and very high testing results have been achieved in terms of sensitivity and specificity. We hope this study can be inspiring and helpful for encouraging more researches in this topic.

Signal-to-Noise Ratio of Microwave Photonic Filter With an Interferometric Structure Based on an Incoherent Broadband Optical Source

A comprehensive investigation of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the microwave photonic filter (MPF) with an interferometric structure based on an incoherent broadband optical source (IBOS) is presented from the time and frequency domains, respectively. The interferometric structure and the IBOS in the MPF result in a beneficial single-bandpass radiofrequency (RF) response. However, the IBOS adds a relatively large noise to the filtered RF signal. Therefore, the analysis of the SNR is of great importance for the design of this kind of MPFs. Theoretical analysis shows that the SNR is a function of the center frequency of the passband, the modulation index, the chromatic dispersion, and the shape of the IBOS. An experiment is performed to verify the theory, and experimental results agree well with the theoretical calculation.

FPETS : Fully Parallel End-to-End Text-to-Speech System

End-to-end Text-to-speech (TTS) system can greatly improve the quality of synthesised speech. But it usually suffers form high time latency due to its auto-regressive structure. And the synthesised speech may also suffer from some error modes, e.g. repeated words, mispronunciations, and skipped words. In this paper, we propose a novel non-autoregressive, fully parallel end-to-end TTS system (FPETS). It utilizes a new alignment model and the recently proposed U-shape convolutional structure, UFANS. Different from RNN, UFANS can capture long term information in a fully parallel manner. Trainable position encoding and two-step training strategy are used for learning better alignments. Experimental results show FPETS utilizes the power of parallel computation and reaches a significant speed up of inference compared with state-of-the-art end-to-end TTS systems. More specifically, FPETS is 600X faster than Tacotron2, 50X faster than DCTTS and 10X faster than Deep Voice3. And FPETS can generates audios with equal or better quality and fewer errors comparing with other system. As far as we know, FPETS is the first end-to-end TTS system which is fully parallel.

Learning to Augment Expressions for Few-shot Fine-grained Facial Expression Recognition

Affective computing and cognitive theory are widely used in modern human-computer interaction scenarios. Human faces, as the most prominent and easily accessible features, have attracted great attention from researchers. Since humans have rich emotions and developed musculature, there exist a lot of fine-grained expressions in real-world applications. However, it is extremely time-consuming to collect and annotate a large number of facial images, of which may even require psychologists to correctly categorize them. To the best of our knowledge, the existing expression datasets are only limited to several basic facial expressions, which are not sufficient to support our ambitions in developing successful human-computer interaction systems. To this end, a novel Fine-grained Facial Expression Database - F2ED is contributed in this paper, and it includes more than 200k images with 54 facial expressions from 119 persons. Considering the phenomenon of uneven data distribution and lack of samples is common in real-world scenarios, we further evaluate several tasks of few-shot expression learning by virtue of our F2ED, which are to recognize the facial expressions given only few training instances. These tasks mimic human performance to learn robust and general representation from few examples. To address such few-shot tasks, we propose a unified task-driven framework - Compositional Generative Adversarial Network (Comp-GAN) learning to synthesize facial images and thus augmenting the instances of few-shot expression classes. Extensive experiments are conducted on F2ED and existing facial expression datasets, i.e., JAFFE and FER2013, to validate the efficacy of our F2ED in pre-training facial expression recognition network and the effectiveness of our proposed approach Comp-GAN to improve the performance of few-shot recognition tasks.

A Fine-Grained Facial Expression Database for End-to-End Multi-Pose Facial Expression Recognition

The recent research of facial expression recognition has made a lot of progress due to the development of deep learning technologies, but some typical challenging problems such as the variety of rich facial expressions and poses are still not resolved. To solve these problems, we develop a new Facial Expression Recognition (FER) framework by involving the facial poses into our image synthesizing and classification process. There are two major novelties in this work. First, we create a new facial expression dataset of more than 200k images with 119 persons, 4 poses and 54 expressions. To our knowledge this is the first dataset to label faces with subtle emotion changes for expression recognition purpose. It is also the first dataset that is large enough to validate the FER task on unbalanced poses, expressions, and zero-shot subject IDs. Second, we propose a facial pose generative adversarial network (FaPE-GAN) to synthesize new facial expression images to augment the data set for training purpose, and then learn a LightCNN based Fa-Net model for expression classification. Finally, we advocate four novel learning tasks on this dataset. The experimental results well validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

UFANS: U-shaped Fully-Parallel Acoustic Neural Structure For Statistical Parametric Speech Synthesis With 20X Faster

Neural networks with Auto-regressive structures, such as Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), have become the most appealing structures for acoustic modeling of parametric text to speech synthesis (TTS) in ecent studies. Despite the prominent capacity to capture long-term dependency, these models consist of massive sequential computations that cannot be fully parallel. In this paper, we propose a U-shaped Fully-parallel Acoustic Neural Structure (UFANS), which is a deconvolutional alternative of RNNs for Statistical Parametric Speech Synthesis (SPSS). The experiments verify that our proposed model is over 20 times faster than RNN based acoustic model, both training and inference on GPU with comparable speech quality. Furthermore, We also investigate that how long information dependence really matters to synthesized speech quality.
