Causal Priors and Their Influence on Judgements of Causality in Visualized Data

"Correlation does not imply causation" is a famous mantra in statistical and visual analysis. However, consumers of visualizations often draw causal conclusions when only correlations between variables are shown. In this paper, we investigate factors that contribute to causal relationships users perceive in visualizations. We collected a corpus of concept pairs from variables in widely used datasets and created visualizations that depict varying correlative associations using three typical statistical chart types. We conducted two MTurk studies on (1) preconceived notions on causal relations without charts, and (2) perceived causal relations with charts, for each concept pair. Our results indicate that people make assumptions about causal relationships between pairs of concepts even without seeing any visualized data. Moreover, our results suggest that these assumptions constitute causal priors that, in combination with visualized association, impact how data visualizations are interpreted. The results also suggest that causal priors may lead to over- or under-estimation in perceived causal relations in different circumstances, and that those priors can also impact users' confidence in their causal assessments. In addition, our results align with prior work, indicating that chart type may also affect causal inference. Using data from the studies, we develop a model to capture the interaction between causal priors and visualized associations as they combine to impact a user's perceived causal relations. In addition to reporting the study results and analyses, we provide an open dataset of causal priors for 56 specific concept pairs that can serve as a potential benchmark for future studies. We also suggest remaining challenges and heuristic-based guidelines to help designers improve visualization design choices to better support visual causal inference.

Multi-Vehicle Trajectory Planning at V2I-enabled Intersections based on Correlated Equilibrium

Generating trajectories that ensure both vehicle safety and improve traffic efficiency remains a challenging task at intersections. Many existing works utilize Nash equilibrium (NE) for the trajectory planning at intersections. However, NE-based planning can hardly guarantee that all vehicles are in the same equilibrium, leading to a risk of collision. In this work, we propose a framework for trajectory planning based on Correlated Equilibrium (CE) when V2I communication is also enabled. The recommendation with CE allows all vehicles to reach a safe and consensual equilibrium and meanwhile keeps the rationality as NE-based methods that no vehicle has the incentive to deviate. The Intersection Manager (IM) first collects the trajectory library and the personal preference probabilities over the library from each vehicle in a low-resolution spatial-temporal grid map. Then, the IM optimizes the recommendation probability distribution for each vehicle's trajectory by minimizing overall collision probability under the CE constraint. Finally, each vehicle samples a trajectory of the low-resolution map to construct a safety corridor and derive a smooth trajectory with a local refinement optimization. We conduct comparative experiments at a crossroad intersection involving two and four vehicles, validating the effectiveness of our method in balancing vehicle safety and traffic efficiency.

Resource-Efficient Real-Time Polarization Compensation for MDI-QKD with Rejected Data

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) closes all the security loopholes in the detection system and is a promising solution for secret key sharing. Polarization encoding is the most common QKD encoding scheme, as it is straightforward to prepare and measure. However, implementing polarization encoding in MDI QKD imposes extra challenges, as polarization alignment must be maintained over both mutually unbiased bases and be maintained for both paths (Alice-Charlie and Bob-Charlie). Polarization alignment is usually done by interrupting the QKD process (reducing overall key generation rates) or using additional classical laser sources multiplexed with quantum channels for polarization alignment. Since low key rates and cost are the two most pressing challenges preventing wide adoption of QKD systems, using additional resources or reducing key rates runs contrary to making QKD commercially viable. Therefore, we propose and implement a novel polarization compensation scheme in the MDI-QKD system that avoids the aforementioned drawbacks by recycling part of discarded detection events. Our scheme evaluates the polarization drift in real-time based on single measurements corresponding to decoy intensities. Our fully automated experimental demonstration maintains the average polarization drift below 0.13 rad over 40 km of spooled fibre (without an insulating jacket) for at least four hours. The average quantum bit error rate is 3.8$\%$, and we achieved an average key rate of $7.45\times 10^{-6}$ bits per pulse.

Multi-Tailed Vision Transformer for Efficient Inference

Recently, Vision Transformer (ViT) has achieved promising performance in image recognition and gradually serves as a powerful backbone in various vision tasks. To satisfy the sequential input of Transformer, the tail of ViT first splits each image into a sequence of visual tokens with a fixed length. Then the following self-attention layers constructs the global relationship between tokens to produce useful representation for the downstream tasks. Empirically, representing the image with more tokens leads to better performance, yet the quadratic computational complexity of self-attention layer to the number of tokens could seriously influence the efficiency of ViT's inference. For computational reduction, a few pruning methods progressively prune uninformative tokens in the Transformer encoder, while leaving the number of tokens before the Transformer untouched. In fact, fewer tokens as the input for the Transformer encoder can directly reduce the following computational cost. In this spirit, we propose a Multi-Tailed Vision Transformer (MT-ViT) in the paper. MT-ViT adopts multiple tails to produce visual sequences of different lengths for the following Transformer encoder. A tail predictor is introduced to decide which tail is the most efficient for the image to produce accurate prediction. Both modules are optimized in an end-to-end fashion, with the Gumbel-Softmax trick. Experiments on ImageNet-1K demonstrate that MT-ViT can achieve a significant reduction on FLOPs with no degradation of the accuracy and outperform other compared methods in both accuracy and FLOPs.

Value Maximization under Stochastic Quasi-Hyperbolic Discounting

We investigate a value-maximizing problem incorporating a human behavior pattern: present-biased-ness, for a firm which navigates strategic decisions encompassing earning retention/payout and capital injection policies, within the framework of Lévy processes. We employ the concept of stochastic quasi-hyperbolic discounting to capture the present-biased inclinations and model decision making as an intra-personal game with sophisticated decision-makers. Our analysis yields closed-form solutions, revealing that double-barrier strategies constitute Markov equilibrium strategies. Our findings reveal that firms, influenced by present-biased-ness, initiate dividend payments sooner, diminishing overall value compared to scenarios without present-biased-ness (under exponential discounting). We also discuss bailout optimality, providing necessary and sufficient conditions. The impact of behavioral issues is examined in the Brownian motion and jump diffusion cases.

Optimal portfolio under ratio-type periodic evaluation in incomplete markets with stochastic factors

This paper studies a type of periodic utility maximization for portfolio management in an incomplete market model, where the underlying price diffusion process depends on some external stochastic factors. The portfolio performance is periodically evaluated on the relative ratio of two adjacent wealth levels over an infinite horizon. For both power and logarithmic utilities, we formulate the auxiliary one-period optimization problems with modified utility functions, for which we develop the martingale duality approach to establish the existence of the optimal portfolio processes and the dual minimizers can be identified as the "least favorable" completion of the market. With the help of the duality results in the auxiliary problems and some fixed point arguments, we further derive and verify the optimal portfolio processes in a periodic manner for the original periodic evaluation problems over an infinite horizon.

Optimal Portfolio with Ratio Type Periodic Evaluation under Short-Selling Prohibition

This paper studies some unconventional utility maximization problems when the ratio type relative portfolio performance is periodically evaluated over an infinite horizon. Meanwhile, the agent is prohibited from short-selling stocks. Our goal is to understand the impact of the periodic reward structure on the long-run constrained portfolio strategy. For power and logarithmic utilities, we can reformulate the original problem into an auxiliary one-period optimization problem. To cope with the auxiliary problem with no short-selling, the dual control problem is introduced and studied, which gives the characterization of the candidate optimal portfolio within one period. With the help of the results from the auxiliary problem, the value function and the optimal constrained portfolio for the original problem with periodic evaluation can be derived and verified, allowing us to discuss some financial implications under the new performance paradigm.

Fully Passive Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution

A recently proposed fully passive QKD removes all source modulator side channels. In this work, we combine the fully passive sources with MDI-QKD to remove simultaneously side channels from source modulators and detectors. We show a numerical simulation of the passive MDI-QKD, and we obtain an acceptable key rate while getting much better implementation security, as well as ease of implementation, compared with a recently proposed fully passive TF-QKD, paving the way towards more secure and practical QKD systems. We have proved that a fully passive protocol is compatible with MDI-QKD and we also proposed a novel idea that could potentially improve the sifting efficiency.

On optimality of barrier dividend control under endogenous regime switching with application to Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Motivated by recent developments in risk management based on the U.S. bankruptcy code, we revisit the De Finetti's optimal dividend problem by incorporating the reorganization process and regulator's intervention documented in Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The resulting surplus process, bearing financial stress towards the more subtle concept of bankruptcy, corresponds to a non-standard spectrally negative Levy process with endogenous regime switching. Some explicit expressions of the expected present values under a barrier strategy, new to the literature, are established in terms of scale functions. With the help of these expressions, when the tail of the Levy measure is log-convex, the optimal dividend control is shown to be of the barrier type and the associated optimal barrier can be identified using scale functions of spectrally negative Levy processes. Some financial implications are also discussed in an illustrative example.

A fully passive transmitter for decoy-state quantum key distribution

A passive quantum key distribution (QKD) transmitter generates the quantum states prescribed by a QKD protocol at random, combining a fixed quantum mechanism and a post-selection step. By avoiding the use of active optical modulators externally driven by random number generators, passive QKD transmitters offer immunity to modulator side channels and potentially enable higher frequencies of operation. Recently, the first linear optics setup suitable for passive decoy-state QKD has been proposed. In this work, we simplify the prototype and adopt sharply different approaches for BB84 polarization encoding and decoy-state generation. On top of it, we elaborate a tight custom-made security analysis surpassing an unnecessary assumption and a post-selection step that are central to the former proposal.

Optimal dividend and capital injection under spectrally positive Markov additive models

This paper studies De Finetti's optimal dividend problem with capital injection under spectrally positive Markov additive models. Based on dynamic programming principle, we first study an auxiliary singular control problem with a final payoff at an exponential random time. The double barrier strategy is shown to be optimal and the optimal barriers are characterized in analytical form using fluctuation identities of spectrally positive Levy processes. We then transform the original problem under spectrally positive Markov additive models into an equivalent series of local optimization problems with the final payoff at the regime-switching time. The optimality of the regime-modulated double barrier strategy can be confirmed for the original problem using results from the auxiliary problem and the fixed point argument for recursive iterations.

Proof-of-Principle Demonstration of Fully-Passive Quantum Key Distribution

Quantum key distribution (QKD) offers information-theoretic security based on the fundamental laws of physics. However, device imperfections, such as those in active modulators, may introduce side-channel leakage, thus compromising practical security. Attempts to remove active modulation, including passive decoy intensities preparation and polarization encoding, have faced theoretical constraints and inadequate security verification, thus hindering the achievement of a fully passive QKD scheme. Recent research has systematically analyzed the security of a fully passive modulation protocol. Based on this, we utilize the gain-switching technique in combination with the post-selection scheme and perform a proof-of-principle demonstration of a fully passive quantum key distribution with polarization encoding at channel losses of 7.2 dB, 11.6 dB, and 16.7 dB. Our work demonstrates the feasibility of active-modulation-free QKD in polarization-encoded systems.

Passive continuous variable quantum key distribution

Passive quantum key distribution (QKD) has been proposed for discrete variable protocols to eliminate side channels in the source. Unfortunately, the key rate of passive DV-QKD protocols suffers from sifting loss and additional quantum errors. In this work, we propose the general framework of passive continuous variable quantum key distribution. Rather surprisingly, we find that the passive source is a perfect candidate for the discrete-modulated continuous variable quantum key distribution (DMCV QKD) protocol. With the phase space remapping scheme, we show that passive DMCV QKD offers the same key rate as its active counterpart. Considering the important advantage of removing side channels that have plagued the active ones, passive DMCV QKD is a promising alternative. In addition, our protocol makes the system much simpler by allowing modulator-free quantum key distribution. Finally, we experimentally characterize the passive DMCV QKD source, thus showing its practicality.

On De Finetti's control under Poisson observations: optimality of a double barrier strategy in a Markov additive model

In this paper we consider the De Finetti's optimal dividend and capital injection problem under a Markov additive model. We assume that the surplus process before dividends and capital injections follows a spectrally positive Markov additive process. Dividend payments are made only at the jump times of an independent Poisson process. Capitals are required to be injected whenever needed to ensure a non-negative surplus process to avoid bankruptcy. Our purpose is to characterize the optimal periodic dividend and capital injection strategy that maximizes the expected total discounted dividends subtracted by the total discounted costs of capital injection. To this end, we first consider an auxiliary optimal periodic dividend and capital injection problem with final payoff under a single spectrally positive Lévy process and conjecture that the optimal strategy is a double barrier strategy. Using the fluctuation theory and excursion-theoretical approach of the spectrally positive Lévy process and the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman inequality approach of the control theory, we are able to verify the conjecture that some double barrier periodic dividend and capital injection strategy solves the auxiliary problem. With the results for the auxiliary control problem and a fixed point argument for recursive iterations induced by the dynamic programming principle, the optimality of a regime-modulated double barrier periodic dividend and capital injection strategy is proved for our target control problem.

A Design Space for Surfacing Content Recommendations in Visual Analytic Platforms

Recommendation algorithms have been leveraged in various ways within visualization systems to assist users as they perform of a range of information tasks. One common focus for these techniques has been the recommendation of content, rather than visual form, as a means to assist users in the identification of information that is relevant to their task context. A wide variety of techniques have been proposed to address this general problem, with a range of design choices in how these solutions surface relevant information to users. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art in how visualization systems surface recommended content to users during users' visual analysis; introduces a four-dimensional design space for visual content recommendation based on a characterization of prior work; and discusses key observations regarding common patterns and future research opportunities.

Fully-Passive Quantum Key Distribution

Passive implementations of quantum key distribution (QKD) sources are highly desirable as they eliminate side-channels that active modulators might introduce. Up till now, passive decoy-state and passive encoding BB84 schemes have both been proposed. Nonetheless, passive decoy-state generation and passive encoding have never been simultaneously implemented with linear optical elements before, which greatly limits the practicality of such passive QKD schemes. In this work, we overcome this limitation and propose a fully-passive QKD source with linear optics that eliminates active modulators for both decoy-state choice and encoding. This allows for highly practical QKD systems that avoid side-channels from the source modulators. The passive source we propose (combined with the decoy-state analysis) can create any arbitrary state on a qubit system and is protocol-independent. That is, it can be used for various protocols such as BB84, reference-frame-independent QKD, or the six-state protocol. It can also in principle be combined with e.g. measurement-device-independent QKD, to build a system without side-channels in either detectors or modulators.

Numerical Security Proof for Decoy-State BB84 and Measurement-Device-Independent QKD Resistant against Large Basis Misalignment

In this work, we incorporate decoy-state analysis into a well-established numerical framework for key rate calculation, and apply the numerical framework to decoy-state BB84 and measurement-device-independent (MDI) QKD protocols as examples. Additionally, we combine with these decoy-state protocols what is called "fine-grained statistics", which is a variation of existing QKD protocols that makes use of originally discarded data to get a better key rate. We show that such variations can grant protocols resilience against any unknown and slowly changing rotation along one axis, similar to reference-frame-independent QKD, but without the need for encoding physically in an additional rotation-invariant basis. Such an analysis can easily be applied to existing systems, or even data already recorded in previous experiments, to gain significantly higher key rate when considerable misalignment is present, extending the maximum distance for BB84 and MDI-QKD and reducing the need for manual alignment in an experiment.

Experiment on scalable multi-user twin-field quantum key distribution network

Twin-field quantum key distribution (TFQKD) systems have shown great promise for implementing practical long-distance secure quantum communication due to its measurement-device-independent nature and its ability to offer fundamentally superior rate-loss scaling than point-to-point QKD systems. A surge of research and development effort in the last two years has produced many variants of protocols and experimental demonstrations. In terms of hardware topology, TFQKD systems interfering quantum signals from two remotely phase-locked laser sources are in essence giant Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) requiring active phase stabilization. Such configurations are inherently unsuitable for a TFQKD network, where more than one user-pair share the common quantum measurement station, because it is practically extremely difficult, if not impossible, to stabilize MZIs of largely disparate path lengths, a situation that is inevitable in a multi-user-pair TFQKD network. On the other hand, Sagnac interferometer based TFQKD systems exploiting the inherent phase stability of the Sagnac ring can implement asymmetric TFQKD, and are therefore eminently suitable for implementing a TFQKD network. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a proof-of-principle multi-user-pair Sagnac TFQKD network where three user pairs sharing the same measurement station can perform pair-wise TFQKD through time multiplexing, with channel losses up to 58 dB, and channel loss asymmetry up to 15 dB. In some cases, the secure key rates still beat the rate-loss bounds for point-to-point repeaterless QKD systems, even in this network configuration. It is to our knowledge the first multi-user-pair TFQKD network demonstration, an important step in advancing quantum communication network technologies.
