Vortex formation around islands in random waves

Wave vortices are fundamental topological features of interference fields, occurring at nodal points where the wave amplitude vanishes. A distinct class of vortices can instead form around it islands or `holes' in two-dimensional wavefields, where the wave intensity remains finite and may even peak at the boundary. In particular, such vortices occur in M2 ocean tides around New Zealand, Madagascar, Iceland, and Svalbard, yet the conditions governing their appearance have remained elusive. Here we develop a statistical theory of vortices around islands in random two-dimensional wavefields, with and without the Coriolis effect, and test it experimentally. We determine the probabilities of vortices with different topological charges as functions of island size and Coriolis parameter. We find that island-bound vortices emerge with unexpectedly high probability, approaching 50% in non-rotating systems and nearly 100% in rotating systems. Moreover, for a broad range of parameters, the presence of a subwavelength island dramatically enhances vortex formation compared with homogeneous random wavefields. Our results explain the formation of tidal vortices around ocean islands of particular sizes (~0.1 of the characteristic wavelength) and establish a general mechanism for generating localized high-intensity vortices around defects in diverse wave systems, from water waves to nanophotonic structures.

Wave Vortices Around Oscillating Subwavelength Holes: Water-Wave Observation

We consider a two-dimensional wave system containing a subwavelength hole, such as an aperture in an interface supporting surface electromagnetic or acoustic waves, or an island in a fluid surface sustaining gravity-capillary waves. Recent studies have revealed the emergence of pronounced wave vortices around such structures, termed type-II vortices, in contrast to conventional (type-I) vortices associated with phase singularities and intensity nulls. A striking natural manifestation of type-II vortices occurs in ocean tides around islands such as New Zealand, Madagascar, and Iceland, where the tidal phase increases by $\pm 2\pi$ around the island. Although this phenomenon is usually associated with the Coriolis effect from the rotation of the Earth, here we demonstrate the controlled generation of type-II vortices using a minimal and tunable setup: a dipole-oscillating subwavelength hole and a single incident plane wave. Using laboratory gravity-capillary waves and an oscillating subwavelength `island', we directly measure the resulting phase structure, topological charge, and wave angular momentum. We show that the emergence and handedness of the vortices can be precisely controlled via the relative phase between the dipolar source and the incident wave. Our results offer a simple and versatile mechanism for engineering subwavelength wave vortices, with potential applications in a variety of two-dimensional wave systems.

Emerging Multidimensional Real-Space Topological Structures at Chiral Bound States in the Continuum

As widely studied topological singularities, bound states in the continuum (BICs) have revealed rich physical properties through their momentum-space topology. Here, we reveal and experimentally demonstrate that magnetically induced chiral BICs possess multidimensional topological structures extending into real space. We design and realize a gyromagnetic photonic crystal slab where magnetic field breaks the time-reversal symmetry and lifts the degeneracy of BICs, creating a pair of chiral BICs with opposite circular polarizations. Near-field scanning measurements reveal phase vortices with quantized topological charges, spatially distributed near-field chirality, and skyrmionic Stokes textures arising from magnetic control. Our work unveils a previously unexplored dimension of BIC topology and establishes gyromagnetic photonic crystals as versatile platforms for manipulating complex topological states.

Dynamic Water-Wave Tweezers

Following a recent demonstration of stable trapping of floating particles by stationary (monochromatic) structured water waves [Nature 638, 394 (2025)], we report dynamic water-wave tweezers that enable controllable transport of the trapped particle along an arbitrary trajectory on the water surface. Furthermore, we demonstrate simultaneous transport of two trapped particles along different trajectories. We employ a triangular lattice formed by the interference of three plane waves, which can trap particles, depending on the wave frequency and particle parameters, either at intensity maxima or at intensity zeros (vortices). By introducing small frequency detunings of the interfering waves, we control 2D motion of the lattice and trapped particles. This approach is robust and effective over a relatively broad range of particle sizes and wave frequencies, offering remarkable new possibilities for noncontact manipulation of floating (e.g., biological and soft-matter) objects in fluidic environments.

Meron Spin Textures in Momentum Space Spawning from Bound States in the Continuum

Topological spin textures, such as merons and skyrmions, have shown significance in both fundamental science and practical applications across diverse physical systems. The optical skyrmionic textures in real space have been extensively explored, but which in momentum space are still rarely studied. Here, we report the experimental generation of momentum-space meron spin textures via bound states in the continuum (BICs) in photonic crystal slabs. We show that under circularly polarized illumination, the momentum-space vortex topology of BICs can transform light with meron spin textures in momentum space. These merons exhibit polarity-switchable configurations controlled by incident light polarization. We theoretically and experimentally verify the generation of momentum-space merons and demonstrate their operational flexibility across a broad spectral range. Our results establish a connection between different momentum-space topologies and provide a robust and compact platform for generating topological spin textures.

Towards Flow-Matching-based TTS without Classifier-Free Guidance

Flow matching has demonstrated strong generative capabilities and has become a core component in modern Text-to-Speech (TTS) systems. To ensure high-quality speech synthesis, Classifier-Free Guidance (CFG) is widely used during the inference of flow-matching-based TTS models. However, CFG incurs substantial computational cost as it requires two forward passes, which hinders its applicability in real-time scenarios. In this paper, we explore removing CFG from flow-matching-based TTS models to improve inference efficiency, while maintaining performance. Specifically, we reformulated the flow matching training target to directly approximate the CFG optimization trajectory. This training method eliminates the need for unconditional model evaluation and guided tuning during inference, effectively cutting the computational overhead in half. Furthermore, It can be seamlessly integrated with existing optimized sampling strategies. We validate our approach using the F5-TTS model on the LibriTTS dataset. Experimental results show that our method achieves a 9$\times$ inference speed-up compared to the baseline F5-TTS, while preserving comparable speech quality. We will release the code and models to support reproducibility and foster further research in this area.

Improving vision-language alignment with graph spiking hybrid Networks

To bridge the semantic gap between vision and language (VL), it is necessary to develop a good alignment strategy, which includes handling semantic diversity, abstract representation of visual information, and generalization ability of models. Recent works use detector-based bounding boxes or patches with regular partitions to represent visual semantics. While current paradigms have made strides, they are still insufficient for fully capturing the nuanced contextual relations among various objects. This paper proposes a comprehensive visual semantic representation module, necessitating the utilization of panoptic segmentation to generate coherent fine-grained semantic features. Furthermore, we propose a novel Graph Spiking Hybrid Network (GSHN) that integrates the complementary advantages of Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) and Graph Attention Networks (GATs) to encode visual semantic information. Intriguingly, the model not only encodes the discrete and continuous latent variables of instances but also adeptly captures both local and global contextual features, thereby significantly enhancing the richness and diversity of semantic representations. Leveraging the spatiotemporal properties inherent in SNNs, we employ contrastive learning (CL) to enhance the similarity-based representation of embeddings. This strategy alleviates the computational overhead of the model and enriches meaningful visual representations by constructing positive and negative sample pairs. We design an innovative pre-training method, Spiked Text Learning (STL), which uses text features to improve the encoding ability of discrete semantics. Experiments show that the proposed GSHN exhibits promising results on multiple VL downstream tasks.

Topological Singularities in Metasurface Scattering Matrices: From Nodal Lines to Exceptional Lines

Topological properties of photonic structures described by Hamiltonian matrices have been extensively studied in recent years. Photonic systems are often open systems, and their coupling with the environment is characterized by scattering matrices, which can exhibit topological features as well. In this work, we uncover that topological singularities can be manifested in the scattering matrices of two-dimensional periodic photonic systems with open boundaries in the third dimension, introducing a new topological approach to describe scattering. We elaborate the importance of symmetry and demonstrate that mirror symmetry gives rise to the formation of diabolic points and nodal lines in the three-dimensional frequency-momentum space, which transform into exceptional points and lines in the presence of material loss. These topological features in the eigenvalue structure of the scattering matrix manifest as vortex lines in the cross-polarization scattering phase, providing a direct link between the eigen-problem and observable scattering phenomena in the frequency-momentum space. We demonstrate these phenomena numerically and experimentally using a reflective non-local metasurface. These findings extend the concept of topological singularities to scattering matrices and pave the way for novel photonic devices and wavefront engineering techniques.

Bulk-spatiotemporal vortex correspondence in gyromagnetic double-zero-index media

Photonic double-zero-index media, distinguished by concurrently zero-valued permittivity and permeability, exhibit extraordinary properties not found in nature. Remarkably, the notion of zero-index can be substantially expanded by generalizing the constitutive parameters from null scalars to nonreciprocal tensors with nonzero matrix elements but zero determinants. Here, we experimentally realize such a new class of gyromagnetic double-zero-index metamaterials possessing both double-zero-index features and nonreciprocal hallmarks. As an intrinsic property, this metamaterial always emerges at a spin-1/2 Dirac point of a topological phase transition. We discover and rigorously prove that a spatiotemporal reflection vortex singularity is always anchored to the metamaterial's Dirac point, with the vortex charge being determined by the topological invariant leap across the phase transition. This establishes a unique bulk-spatiotemporal vortex correspondence that extends the protected boundary effects into the time domain and exclusively characterizes topological phase transition points, setting it apart from any pre-existing bulk-boundary correspondence. Based on this correspondence, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a mechanism to deterministically generate optical spatiotemporal vortex pulses with firmly fixed central frequency and momentum, hence showing unparalleled robustness. Our findings uncover deep connections between zero-refractive-index photonics, topological photonics, and singular optics, opening the avenue for the manipulation of space-time topological light fields via the inherent topology of extreme-parameter metamaterials.

Spin-Orbit-Locking Chiral Bound States in the Continuum

Bound states in the continuum (BICs), which are confined optical modes exhibiting infinite quality factors and carrying topological polarization configurations in momentum space, have recently sparked significant interest across both fundamental and applied physics.} Here we show that breaking time-reversal symmetry by external magnetic field enables a new form of chiral BICs with spin-orbit locking. Applying a magnetic field to a magneto-optical photonic crystal slab lifts doubly degenerate BICs into a pair of chiral BICs carrying opposite pseudo-spins and orbital angular momenta. Multipole analysis verifies the non-zero angular momenta and reveals the spin-orbital-locking behaviors. In momentum space, we observe ultrahigh quality factors and near-circular polarization surrounding chiral BICs, enabling potential applications in spin-selective nanophotonics. Compared to conventional BICs, the magnetically-induced chiral BICs revealed here exhibit distinct properties and origins, significantly advancing the topological photonics of BICs by incorporating broken time-reversal symmetry.

A High Fidelity and Low Complexity Neural Audio Coding

Audio coding is an essential module in the real-time communication system. Neural audio codecs can compress audio samples with a low bitrate due to the strong modeling and generative capabilities of deep neural networks. To address the poor high-frequency expression and high computational cost and storage consumption, we proposed an integrated framework that utilizes a neural network to model wide-band components and adopts traditional signal processing to compress high-band components according to psychological hearing knowledge. Inspired by auditory perception theory, a perception-based loss function is designed to improve harmonic modeling. Besides, generative adversarial network (GAN) compression is proposed for the first time for neural audio codecs. Our method is superior to prior advanced neural codecs across subjective and objective metrics and allows real-time inference on desktop and mobile.

Generation of Spatiotemporal Vortex Pulses by Simple Diffractive Grating

Spatiotemporal vortex pulses are wave packets that carry transverse orbital angular momentum, exhibiting exotic structured wavefronts that can twist through space and time. Existing methods to generate these pulses require complex setups like spatial light modulators or computer-optimized structures. Here, we demonstrate a new approach to generate spatiotemporal vortex pulses using just a simple diffractive grating. The key is constructing a phase vortex in frequency-momentum space by leveraging symmetry, resonance, and diffraction. Our approach is applicable to any wave system. We use a liquid surface wave platform to directly demonstrate and observe the real-time generation and evolution of spatiotemporal vortex pulses. This straightforward technique provides opportunities to explore pulse dynamics and potential applications across different disciplines.

Gesper: A Restoration-Enhancement Framework for General Speech Reconstruction

This paper describes a real-time General Speech Reconstruction (Gesper) system submitted to the ICASSP 2023 Speech Signal Improvement (SSI) Challenge. This novel proposed system is a two-stage architecture, in which the speech restoration is performed, and then cascaded by speech enhancement. We propose a complex spectral mapping-based generative adversarial network (CSM-GAN) as the speech restoration module for the first time. For noise suppression and dereverberation, the enhancement module is performed with fullband-wideband parallel processing. On the blind test set of ICASSP 2023 SSI Challenge, the proposed Gesper system, which satisfies the real-time condition, achieves 3.27 P.804 overall mean opinion score (MOS) and 3.35 P.835 overall MOS, ranked 1st in both track 1 and track 2.

A General Unfolding Speech Enhancement Method Motivated by Taylor's Theorem

While deep neural networks have facilitated significant advancements in the field of speech enhancement, most existing methods are developed following either empirical or relatively blind criteria, lacking adequate guidelines in pipeline design. Inspired by Taylor's theorem, we propose a general unfolding framework for both single- and multi-channel speech enhancement tasks. Concretely, we formulate the complex spectrum recovery into the spectral magnitude mapping in the neighborhood space of the noisy mixture, in which an unknown sparse term is introduced and applied for phase modification in advance. Based on that, the mapping function is decomposed into the superimposition of the 0th-order and high-order polynomials in Taylor's series, where the former coarsely removes the interference in the magnitude domain and the latter progressively complements the remaining spectral detail in the complex spectrum domain. In addition, we study the relation between adjacent order terms and reveal that each high-order term can be recursively estimated with its lower-order term, and each high-order term is then proposed to evaluate using a surrogate function with trainable weights so that the whole system can be trained in an end-to-end manner. Given that the proposed framework is devised based on Taylor's theorem, it possesses improved internal flexibility. Extensive experiments are conducted on WSJ0-SI84, DNS-Challenge, Voicebank+Demand, spatialized Librispeech, and L3DAS22 multi-channel speech enhancement challenge datasets. Quantitative results show that the proposed approach yields competitive performance over existing top-performing approaches in terms of multiple objective metrics.

Imaging with an ultra-thin reciprocal lens

Imaging is of great importance in everyday life and various fields of science and technology. Conventional imaging is achieved by bending light rays originating from an object with a lens. Such ray bending requires space-variant structures, inevitably introducing a geometric center to the lens. To overcome the limitations arising from the conventional imaging mechanism, we consider imaging elements that employ a different mechanism, which we call reciprocal lenses. This type of imaging element relies on ray shifting, enabled by momentum-space-variant phase modulations in periodic structures. As such, it has the distinct advantage of not requiring alignment with a geometric center. Moreover, upright real images can be produced directly with a single reciprocal lens as the directions of rays are not changed. We realized an ultra-thin reciprocal lens based on a photonic crystal slab. We characterized the ray shifting behavior of the reciprocal lens and demonstrated imaging. Our work gives an alternative mechanism for imaging, and provides a new way to modulate electromagnetic waves.

TaylorBeamixer: Learning Taylor-Inspired All-Neural Multi-Channel Speech Enhancement from Beam-Space Dictionary Perspective

Despite the promising performance of existing frame-wise all-neural beamformers in the speech enhancement field, it remains unclear what the underlying mechanism exists. In this paper, we revisit the beamforming behavior from the beam-space dictionary perspective and formulate it into the learning and mixing of different beam-space components. Based on that, we propose an all-neural beamformer called TaylorBM to simulate Taylor's series expansion operation in which the 0th-order term serves as a spatial filter to conduct the beam mixing, and several high-order terms are tasked with residual noise cancellation for post-processing. The whole system is devised to work in an end-to-end manner. Experiments are conducted on the spatialized LibriSpeech corpus and results show that the proposed approach outperforms existing advanced baselines in terms of evaluation metrics.

Optimizing Shoulder to Shoulder: A Coordinated Sub-Band Fusion Model for Real-Time Full-Band Speech Enhancement

Due to the high computational complexity to model more frequency bands, it is still intractable to conduct real-time full-band speech enhancement based on deep neural networks. Recent studies typically utilize the compressed perceptually motivated features with relatively low frequency resolution to filter the full-band spectrum by one-stage networks, leading to limited speech quality improvements. In this paper, we propose a coordinated sub-band fusion network for full-band speech enhancement, which aims to recover the low- (0-8 kHz), middle- (8-16 kHz), and high-band (16-24 kHz) in a step-wise manner. Specifically, a dual-stream network is first pretrained to recover the low-band complex spectrum, and another two sub-networks are designed as the middle- and high-band noise suppressors in the magnitude-only domain. To fully capitalize on the information intercommunication, we employ a sub-band interaction module to provide external knowledge guidance across different frequency bands. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method yields consistent performance advantages over state-of-the-art full-band baselines.

Finite size mediated radiative coupling of lasing plasmonic bound state in continuum

Radiative properties of lasing plasmonic bound state in continuum are analyzed. The topological charge of the lasing signal is analyzed in the far field as well as in the source plane of the finite sized plasmonic lattice. The physical mechanism enabling the coupling of the BIC to radiation continuum is identified. We show that while the BICs have their origin in multipolar resonances, their far-field radiation properties are governed by the position dependent dipole moment distribution induced by the symmetry breaking in a finite plasmonic lattice. Remarkably, this dipole-moment enabled coupling to radiation continuum maintains the essential topological features of the infinite lattice BICs.
