Higgs CP properties using the tau decay modes at the ILC

We investigate the prospects of determining the CP nature of the 126 GeV neutral spin-0 (Higgs) boson h, discovered at the LHC, at a future linear collider. We consider the production of h by the Higgsstrahlung process and its subsequent decays to tau leptons. We investigate how precisely a possible pseudoscalar component of h can be detected by the measurement of a suitably defined angular distribution, if all major decay modes of the tau lepton are used. From our numerical simulations, we estimate the expected precision to the scalar-pseudoscalar mixing angle, including estimates of the background and of measurement uncertainties, to be 2.8 degree for Higgs-boson production at a center-of-mass energy of 250 GeV and for a collider with integrated luminosity of 1 inverse attobarn.

The real radiation antenna functions for $S\rightarrow Q\bar{Q}gg$ at NNLO QCD

We analyze, in the antenna subtraction framework, the real radiation antenna functions for processes involving the production of a pair of heavy quarks and two gluons by an uncolored initial state at NNLO QCD. We provide explicit expressions for these functions and discuss their infrared singular behaviour. Our main results are the corresponding integrated antenna functions which are computed analytically. They are expressed in terms of harmonic polylogarithms.

Top quark and leptonic charge asymmetries for the Tevatron and LHC

We compute, for $t \bar t$ production at the LHC and at the Tevatron, several charge asymmetries to NLO QCD, including also the electromagnetic and weak-interaction corrections. We calculate these asymmetries both inclusively and with additional kinematic cuts and compare our results, where possible, with recent experimental results and with SM predictions. The $t \bar t$ asymmetries induce also corresponding asymmetries for the charged leptons from semileptonic top-quark decay. Although these asymmetries are, in the SM, smaller than the corresponding ones for top quarks, they are expected to be measurable quite precisely. In fact, measurement of a lepton asymmetry in $\ell$ + jets events was reported by the D$\emptyset$ and CDF experiments. We analyze and compute to NLO in the gauge couplings leptonic charge asymmetries for dileptonic and semileptonic $\ttbar$ events, with and without acceptance cuts, at the Tevatron and the LHC.

Determination of the CP parity of Higgs bosons in their tau decay channels at the ILC

We investigate a method for determining the CP nature of a neutral Higgs boson or spin-zero resonance at a future linear e+e- collider (ILC) in its tau decay channel. Our procedure is applicable if the production vertex of the Higgs boson can be measured. This will be the case, for example, for the Higgs-strahlung process. We show that the method is feasible for both the leptonic and the hadronic 1-prong tau decay modes.

The real radiation antenna function for $S \to Q {\bar Q} q {\bar q}$ at NNLO QCD

As a first step towards the application of the antenna subtraction formalism to NNLO QCD reactions with massive quarks, we determine the real radiation antenna function and its integrated counterpart for reactions of the type $S \to Q{\bar Q} q {\bar q}$, where $S$ denotes an uncolored initial state and $Q$, $q$ a massive and massless quark, respectively. We compute the corresponding integrated antenna function in terms of harmonic polylogarithms. As an application and check of our results we calculate the contribution proportional to $α_s^2 e^2_Q N_f$ to the inclusive heavy-quark pair production cross ection in $e^+e^-$ annihilation.

Pseudoscalar Higgs Bosons at the LHC: Production and Decays into Electroweak Gauge Bosons Revisited

We analyze and compute, within a number of standard model (SM) extensions, the cross sections $σ_{A\to VV'}$ for the production of a heavy neutral pseudoscalar Higgs boson/spin-zero resonance at the LHC and its subsequent decays into electroweak gauge bosons. For comparison we calculate also the corresponding cross sections for a heavy scalar. The SM extensions we consider include a type-II two-Higgs doublet model (2HDM), a 2HDM with 4 chiral fermion generations, the minimal supersymmetric extension of the SM (MSSM), and top-color assisted technicolour models. Presently available phenomenological constraints on the parameters of these models are taken into account. We find that, with the exception of the MSSM, these models permit the LHC cross sections $σ_{A\to VV'}$ to be of observable size. That is, a pseudoscalar resonance may be observable, if it exists, at the LHC in its decays into electroweak gauge bosons, in particular in $WW$ and $γγ$ final states.

Distributions and correlations for top quark pair production and decay at the Tevatron and LHC.

We investigate a number of observables that are and will be instrumental in the exploration of $\tbart$ production and decay at the Tevatron and the LHC. For this analysis we made a computer program that incorporates besides the NLO QCD corrections to $\tbart$ production and decay also mixed weak-QCD corrections to the production amplitudes, and that allows for studies of correlated versus uncorrelated $\tbart$ events. In this paper we analyze and compute observables mostly for dileptonic $\tbart$ final states to next-to-leading order in the strong and weak gauge couplings (NLOW), with selection cuts. We calculate charge asymmetries of the top quark and of $\ell=e,μ$ and we compare, where possible, with experimental results. We show that top-quark spin correlations affect a leptonic pair asymmetry (which has not been measured so far) by $\sim 7%$. We determine several dileptonic angular correlations, which reflect $\tbart$ spin correlations, namely the beam, off-diagonal and helicity correlation, and the opening angle distribution (defined in the $t$, $\bar t$ rest frames) when selection cuts are applied. Our NLOW predictions for the beam, off-diagonal, and helicity correlation for the Tevatron agree with recent measurements by the CDF and D0 experiments. In addition we make predictions for estimators of these correlations as functions of $\mtt$. These estimators may prove useful for the Tevatron and also in the early rounds of LHC data-analyses, where the event numbers will probably not be abundant. Furthermore, we compute to NLOW in the gauge couplings two dilepton angular correlations that are defined in the laboratory frame, for correlated and uncorrelated $\tbart$ events at the LHC. Finally, based on our SM results, we identify several observables that allow to search for non-standard parity- and CP-violating interactions, especially with future LHC data.

Pseudoscalar Higgs Boson Decays into W and Z Bosons Revisited

We examine, in a number of Standard Model extensions, whether the decays $A \to WW/ZZ$ of a neutral pseudoscalar (Higgs) resonance can have branching ratios at the percent level and we determine the possible size of $B(A \to WW/ZZ)$ relative to the respective branching ratios of a scalar boson $H$. The branching ratios of the these decay modes and the total widths $Γ_A$, $Γ_H$ are computed in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the SM, in a type-II two-Higgs doublet extension (2HDM), in a 2HDM with 4 chiral fermion generations, in a 2HDM with additional heavy vector-like quarks, and in a top-color assisted technicolor model. We find that in the above non-supersymmetric models $B(A \to WW)$ can be about 2%, while $B(A \to ZZ) \lesssim 10^{-3}.$ The ratio $B(A \to WW)/B(H \to WW)$ can be of order 10% in large regions of the parameter space of the models.

Determining the CP parity of Higgs bosons at the LHC in the $τ$ to 1-prong decay channels

We propose a method for determining the CP nature of a neutral Higgs boson or spin-zero resonance $ϕ$ at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in its $ϕ\toτ^{-}τ^{+}$ decay channel. The method can be applied to any 1-prong $τ$-decay mode, which comprise the majority of the $τ$-lepton decays. The proposed observables allow to discriminate between pure scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs-boson states and/or between a CP-conserving and CP-violating Higgs sector. We show for the decays $τ\toπν_τ$ that the method maintains its discriminating power when measurement uncertainties are taken into account. The method will be applicable also at a future linear $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider.

The Top Quark Decay Vertex in Standard Model Extensions

New physics interactions can affect the strength and structure of the $tbW$ vertex. We investigate the magnitudes and phases of "anomalous" contributions to this vertex in a two-Higgs doublet and the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model, and in a top-color assisted technicolor (TC2) model. While the magnitudes of the anomalous couplings remain below 1 percent in the first two models, TC2 interactions can reduce the left-chiral coupling $f_L$ by several percent.

Electroweak corrections to $t\bar{t}$ production at hadron colliders

We report on our recent work on electroweak corrections to $t\bar{t}$ production at hadron colliders. Specifically, we discuss the weak-interaction contributions to the top quark transverse momentum and $t \bar{t}$ invariant mass distributions and an induced parity-violating top-spin asymmetry.

Weak interaction corrections to hadronic top quark pair production: contributions from quark-gluon and $b \bar b$ induced reactions

As an addendum to our previous evaluation of the weak-interaction corrections to hadronic top-quark pair production we determine the leading weak-interaction contributions due to the subprocesses $b {\bar b} \to t {\bar t}$ and $g q ({\bar q}) \to t {\bar t} q ({\bar q})$. For several distributions in $t {\bar t}$ production at the LHC we find that these contributions are non-negligible as compared to the weak corrections from the other partonic subprocesses.

Determining the CP parity of Higgs bosons at the LHC in their tau decay channels

If neutral Higgs bosons will be discovered at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) then an important subsequent issue will be the investigation of their CP nature. Higgs boson decays into tau lepton pairs are particularly suited in this respect. Analyzing the three charged pion decay modes of the tau leptons and taking expected measurement uncertainties at the LHC into account, we show that the CP properties of a Higgs boson can be pinned down with appropriately chosen observables, provided that sufficiently large event numbers will eventually be available.

Weak interaction corrections to hadronic top quark pair production

In this paper we determine the weak-interaction corrections of order $α_s^2α$ to hadronic top-quark pair production. First we compute the one-loop weak corrections to $t \bar t$ production due to gluon fusion and the order $α_s^2α$ corrections to $t \bar t$ production due to (anti)quark gluon scattering in the Standard Model. With our previous result this yields the complete corrections of order $α_s^2α$ to $gg$, $q \bar q$, $q g$, and ${\bar q} g$ induced hadronic $t \bar t$ production with $t$ and $\bar t$ polarizations and spin-correlations fully taken into account. For the Tevatron and the LHC we determine the weak contributions to the transverse top-momentum and to the $t \bar t$ invariant mass distributions. At the LHC these corrections can be of the order of 10 percent compared with the leading-order results, for large $p_T$ and $\mtt$, respectively. Apart from parity-even $t \bar t$ spin correlations we analyze also parity-violating double and single spin asymmetries, and show how they are related if CP invariance holds. For $t$ (and $\bar t$) quarks which decay semileptonically, we compute a resulting charged-lepton forward-backward asymmetry $A_{PV}$ with respect to the $t$ ($\bar t$) direction, which is of the order of one percent at the LHC for suitable invariant-mass cuts.

Semileptonic decays of polarised top quarks: V + A admixture and QCD corrections

The semileptonic decays of polarised top quarks are analysed for a general chirality-conserving tbW vertex. We calculate double differential distributions for the charged lepton and the neutrino to order α_s in the QCD coupling. We present these QCD corrections in terms of compact parameterisations that should be useful for the future investigation of the structure of the top decay vertex on the basis of large data samples.

Next-to-Leading Order QCD Corrections to Three-Jet Cross Sections with Massive Quarks

We calculate the cross section for $e^+ e^-$ annihilation into three jets for massive quarks at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD, both on and off the $Z$ resonance. Our computation allows the implementation of any jet clustering algorithm. We give results for the three-jet cross section involving $b$ quarks for the JADE and Durham algorithm at c.m. energies $\sqrt s = m_Z$. We also discuss a three-jet observable that is sensitive to the mass of the $b$ quark.
