Entropy, Transinformation and Word Distribution of Information-Carrying Sequences

We investigate correlations in information carriers, e.g. texts and pieces of music, which are represented by strings of letters. For information carrying strings generated by one source (i.e. a novel or a piece of music) we find correlations on many length scales. The word distribution, the higher order entropies and the transinformation are calculated. The analogy to strings generated through symbolic dynamics by nonlinear systems in critical states is discussed.

Statistical Mechanics of Canonical-Dissipative Systems and Applications to Swarm Dynamics

We develop the theory of canonical-dissipative systems, based on the assumption that both the conservative and the dissipative elements of the dynamics are determined by invariants of motion. In this case, known solutions for conservative systems can be used for an extension of the dynamics, which also includes elements such as the take-up/dissipation of energy. This way, a rather complex dynamics can be mapped to an analytically tractable model, while still covering important features of non-equilibrium systems. In our paper, this approach is used to derive a rather general swarm model that considers (a) the energetic conditions of swarming, i.e. for active motion, (b) interactions between the particles based on global couplings. We derive analytical expressions for the non-equilibrium velocity distribution and the mean squared displacement of the swarm. Further, we investigate the influence of different global couplings on the overall behavior of the swarm by means of particle-based computer simulations and compare them with the analytical estimations.

Brownian Particles far from Equilibrium

We study a model of Brownian particles which are pumped with energy by means of a non-linear friction function, for which different types are discussed. A suitable expression for a non-linear, velocity-dependent friction function is derived by considering an internal energy depot of the Brownian particles. In this case, the friction function describes the pumping of energy in the range of small velocities, while in the range of large velocities the known limit of dissipative friction is reached. In order to investigate the influence of additional energy supply, we discuss the velocity distribution function for different cases. Analytical solutions of the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation in 2d are presented and compared with computer simulations. Different to the case of passive Brownian motion, we find several new features of the dynamics, such as the formation of limit cycles in the four-dimensional phase-space, a large mean squared displacement which increases quadratically with the energy supply, or non-equilibrium velocity distributions with crater-like form. Further, we point to some generalizations and possible applications of the model.

Uphill Motion of Active Brownian Particles in Piecewise Linear Potentials

We consider Brownian particles with the ability to take up energy from the environment, to store it in an internal depot, and to convert internal energy into kinetic energy of motion. Provided a supercritical supply of energy, these particles are able to move in a ``high velocity'' or active mode, which allows them to move also against the gradient of an external potential. We investigate the critical energetic conditions of this self-driven motion for the case of a linear potential and a ratchet potential. In the latter case, we are able to find two different critical conversion rates for the internal energy, which describe the onset of a directed net current into the two different directions. The results of computer simulations are confirmed by analytical expressions for the critical parameters and the average velocity of the net current. Further, we investigate the influence of the asymmetry of the ratchet potential on the net current and estimate a critical value for the asymmetry in order to obtain a positive or negative net current.

Directed motion of Brownian particles with internal energy depot

A model of Brownian particles with the ability to take up energy from the environment, to store it in an internal depot, and to convert internal energy into kinetic energy of motion, is discussed. The general dynamics outlined in Sect. 2 is investigated for the deterministic and stochastic particle's motion in a non-fluctuating ratchet potential. First, we discuss the attractor structure of the ratchet system by means of computer simulations. Dependent on the energy supply, we find either periodic bound attractors corresponding to localized oscillations, or one/two unbound attractors corresponding to directed movement in the ratchet potential. Considering an ensemble of particles, we show that in the deterministic case two currents into different directions can occur, which however depend on a supercritical supply of energy. Considering stochastic influences, we find the current only in one direction. We further investigate how the current reversal depends on the strength of the stochastic force and the asymmetry of the potential. We find both a critical value of the noise intensity for the onset of the current and an optimal value where the net current reaches a maximum. Eventually, the dynamics of our model is compared with other ratchet models previously suggested.

Smoothing representation of fitness landscapes - the genotype-phenotype map of evolution

We investigate an simple evolutionary game of sequences and demonstrate on this example the structure of fitness landscapes in discrete problems. We show the smoothing action of the genotype-phenotype mapping which still makes it feasible for evolution to work. Further we propose the density of sequence states as a classifying measure of fitness landscapes.

Analytic Investigations of Random Search Strategies for Parameter Optimization

Several standard processes for searching minima of potential functions, such as thermodynamical strategies (simulated annealing) and biologically motivated selfreproduction strategies, are reduced to Schrödinger problems. The properties of the landscape are encoded in the spectrum of the Hamiltonian. We investigate this relation between landscape and spectrum by means of topological methods which lead to a possible classification of landscapes in the framework of the operator theory. The influence of the dimension $d$ of the search space is discussed. The connection between thermodynamical strategies and biologically motivated selfreproduction strategies is analyzed and interpreted in the above context. Mixing of both strategies is introduced as a new powerful tool of optimization.

Dynamic Entropies, Long--Range Correlations and Fluctuations in Complex Linear Structures

We investigate symbolic sequences and in particular information carriers as e.g. books and DNA--strings. First the higher order Shannon entropies are calculated, a characteristic root law is detected. Then the algorithmic entropy is estimated by using Lempel--Ziv compression algorithms. In the third section the correlation function for distant letters, the low frequency Fourier spectrum and the characteristic scaling exponents are calculated. We show that all these measures are able to detect long--range correlations. However, as demonstrated by shuffling experiments, different measures operate on different length scales. The longest correlations found in our analysis comprise a few hundreds or thousands of letters and may be understood as long--wave fluctuations of the composition.

Guessing probability distributions from small samples

We propose a new method for the calculation of the statistical properties, as e.g. the entropy, of unknown generators of symbolic sequences. The probability distribution $p(k)$ of the elements $k$ of a population can be approximated by the frequencies $f(k)$ of a sample provided the sample is long enough so that each element $k$ occurs many times. Our method yields an approximation if this precondition does not hold. For a given $f(k)$ we recalculate the Zipf--ordered probability distribution by optimization of the parameters of a guessed distribution. We demonstrate that our method yields reliable results.

Entropy and Long range correlations in literary English

Recently long range correlations were detected in nucleotide sequences and in human writings by several authors. We undertake here a systematic investigation of two books, Moby Dick by H. Melville and Grimm's tales, with respect to the existence of long range correlations. The analysis is based on the calculation of entropy like quantities as the mutual information for pairs of letters and the entropy, the mean uncertainty, per letter. We further estimate the number of different subwords of a given length $n$. Filtering out the contributions due to the effects of the finite length of the texts, we find correlations ranging to a few hundred letters. Scaling laws for the mutual information (decay with a power law), for the entropy per letter (decay with the inverse square root of $n$) and for the word numbers (stretched exponential growth with $n$ and with a power law of the text length) were found.
