Jordan-Chevalley decompositions over imperfect fields

We give a classification of Jordan-Chevalley decompositions of an endomorphism of a finite-dimensional vector space over a not necessarily perfect field, i.e. additive decompositions into commuting semisimple and nilpotent endomorphisms.

The trace formula and prehomogeneous vector spaces

We describe an approach to express the geometric side of the Arthur-Selberg trace formula in terms of zeta integrals attached to prehomogeneous vector spaces. This will provide explicit formulas for weighted orbital integrals and for the coefficients by which they are multiplied in the trace formula. We implement this programme for the principal unipotent conjugacy class. The method relies on certain convergence results and uses the notions of induced conjugacy classes and canonical parabolic subgroups. So far, it works for certain types of conjugacy classes, which covers all classes appearing in classical groups of absolute rank up to two.

On the geometric side of the Arthur trace formula for the symplectic group of rank 2

We study the non-semisimple terms in the geometric side of the Arthur trace formula for the split symplectic similitude group or the split symplectic group of rank 2 over any algebraic number field. In particular, we show that the coefficients of unipotent orbital integrals are expressed by the Dedekind zeta function, Hecke L-functions, and the Shintani zeta function for the space of binary quadratic forms.

Induced conjugacy classes, prehomogeneous varieties, and canonical parabolic subgroups

We extend the notion of induced conjugacy classes in reductive groups, introduced by Lusztig and Spaltenstein for unipotent classes, to arbitrary classes. We study properties of equivariant fibrations of prehomogeneous affine spaces, especially the existence of relative invariants. We also detect prehomogeneous affine spaces as subquotients of canonical parabolic subgroups attached to elements of reductive groups in the sense of Jacobson-Morozov. These results are prerequisites for making the geometric expansion of the Arthur-Selberg trace formula more explicit.

Asymptotic and descent formulas for weighted orbital integrals

We rewrite Arthur's asymptotic formula for weighted orbital integrals on real groups with the aid of a residue calculus and extend the resulting formula to the Schwartz space. Then we extract the available information about the coefficients in the decomposition of the Fourier transforms of Arthur's invariant distributions I_M(γ) in terms of standard solutions of the pertinent holonomic system of differential equations. This allows us to determine some of those coefficients explicitly. Finally, we prove descent formulas for those differential equations, for their standard solutions and for the aforementioned coefficients, which reduce each of them to the case that γis elliptic in M.
