Numerical Solution of Hard-Core Mixtures

We study the equilibrium phase diagram of binary mixtures of hard spheres as well as of parallel hard cubes. A superior cluster algorithm allows us to establish and to access the demixed phase for both systems and to investigate the subtle interplay between short-range depletion and long-range demixing.

Two-Dimensional QCD in the Wu-Mandelstam-Leibbrandt Prescription

We find the exact non-perturbative expression for a simple Wilson loop of arbitrary shape for U(N) and SU(N) Euclidean or Minkowskian two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory regulated by the Wu-Mandelstam-Leibbrandt gauge prescription. The result differs from the standard pure exponential area-law of YM_2, but still exhibits confinement as well as invariance under area-preserving diffeomorphisms and generalized axial gauge transformations. We show that the large N limit is NOT a good approximation to the model at finite N and conclude that Wu's N=infinity Bethe-Salpeter equation for QCD_2 should have no bound state solutions. The main significance of our results derives from the importance of the Wu-Mandelstam-Leibbrandt prescription in higher-dimensional perturbative gauge theory.

Cluster Algorithm for hard spheres and related systems

In this paper, we present a cluster algorithm for the simulation of hard spheres and related systems. In this algorithm, a copy of the configuration is rotated with respect to a randomly chosen pivot point. The two systems are then superposed, and clusters of overlapping spheres in the joint system are isolated. Each of these clusters can be ``flipped'' independently, a process which generates non-local moves in the original configuration. A generalization of this algorithm (which works perfectly well at small density) can be successfully made to work at densities around the solid-liquid transition point in the two-dimensional hard-sphere system.

Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations for a large number of bosons in a harmonic trap

In this paper, I present a precise Quantum Monte Carlo calculation at finite temperature for a very large number (many thousands) of bosons in a harmonic trap, which may be anisotropic. The calculation applies directly to the recent experiments of Bose-Einstein condensation of atomic vapors in magnetic traps. I show that the critical temperature of the system decreases with the interaction. I also present profiles for the overall density and the one of condensed particles, and obtain excellent agreement with solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Numerical Solutions of the von Karman Equations for a Thin Plate

In this paper, we present an algorithm for the solution of the von Karman equations of elasticity theory and related problems. Our method of successive reconditioning is able to avoid convergence problems at any ratio of the nonlinear streching and the pure bending energies. We illustrate the power of the method by numerical calculations of pinched or compressed plates subject to fixed boundaries.

Non-Integrability of Two-Dimensional QCD

In this paper we numerically demonstrate that massless two-dimensional QCD is not integrable. To this aim, we explicitly solve the 't Hooft integral equation for bound states by an adaptive spline procedure, and compute the decay amplitudes. These amplitudes significantly differ from zero except in all cases in which the decay also produces a pion.

Aging without disorder on long time scales

We study the Metropolis dynamics of a simple spin system without disorder, which exhibits glassy dynamics at low temperatures. We use an implementation of the algorithm of Bortz, Kalos and Lebowitz \cite{bortz}. This method turns out to be very efficient for the study of glassy systems, which get trapped in local minima on many different time scales. We find strong evidence of aging effects at low temperatures. We relate these effects to the distribution function of the trapping times of single configurations.

A Rapid Dynamical Monte Carlo Algorithm for Glassy Systems

In this paper we present a dynamical Monte Carlo algorithm which is applicable to systems satisfying a clustering condition: during the dynamical evolution the system is mostly trapped in deep local minima (as happens in glasses, pinning problems etc.). We compare the algorithm to the usual Monte Carlo algorithm, using as an example the Bernasconi model. In this model, a straightforward implementation of the algorithm gives an improvement of several orders of magnitude in computational speed with respect to a recent, already very efficient, implementation of the algorithm of Bortz, Kalos and Lebowitz.

Effect of a magnetic field on Mott-Hubbard systems

The effect of a magnetic field on Mott-Hubbard systems is investigated by studying the half-filled Hubbard model in the limit of infinite dimensions. A first-order metamagnetic transition between the strongly correlated metal and the Mott insulator is found for a critical value of the applied field. The field and temperature dependence of the magnetization, one-particle properties and susceptibility are studied and compared to the Gutzwiller approximation. The experimental relevance for transition-metal oxides and liquid $^{3}He$ is discussed.

Superconductivity in the Two-Band Hubbard Model in Infinite D: an Exact Diagonalization Study

We apply an exact diagonalization method to the the infinite-D two-band Hubbard model. The method is essentially exact for the calculation of thermodynamic properties for all but the smallest frequencies and yields a resolution unavailable in Monte Carlo calculations. We establish the instability of the normal state with respect to singlet superconductivity at small frequencies at small doping, the regime of relevance for High-$T_c$ superconductors. We also present evidence for the existence of an instability towards triplet superconductivity in the large doping regime $n \sim 2$.

Exact Diagonalization Approach for the infinite D Hubbard Model

We present a powerful method for calculating the thermodynamic properties of the Hubbard model in infinite dimensions, using an exact diagonalization of an Anderson model with a finite number of sites. At finite temperatures, the explicit diagonalization of the Anderson Hamiltonian allows the calculation of Green's functions with a resolution far superior to that of Quantum Monte Carlo calculations. At zero temperature, the Lanczòs method is used and yields the essentially exact zero-temperature solution of the model, except in a region of very small frequencies. Numerical results for the half-filled case in the paramagnetic phase (quasi-particle weight, self-energy, and also real-frequency spectral densities) are presented.

Superconductivity in the Two-Band Hubbard Model in Infinite Dimensions

We study a two-band Hubbard model in the limit of infinite dimensions, using a combination of analytical methods and Monte-Carlo techniques. The normal state is found to display various metal to insulators transitions as a function of doping and interaction strength. We derive self-consistent equations for the local Green's functions in the presence of superconducting long-range order, and extend previous algorithms to this case. We present direct numerical evidence that in a specific range of parameter space, the normal state is unstable against a superconducting state characterized by a strongly frequency dependent order-parameter.
