Higgs triplets at like-sign linear colliders and neutrino mixing

We study the phenomenology of the type-II seesaw model at a linear e^-e^- collider. We show that the process e^-e^- \rightarrow alpha^-beta^- (alpha, beta = e, mu, tau being charged leptons) mediated by a doubly charged scalar is very sensitive to the neutrino parameters, in particular the absolute neutrino mass scale and the Majorana CP-violating phases. We identify the regions in parameter space in which appreciable collider signatures in the channel with two like-sign muons in the final state are possible. This includes Higgs triplet masses beyond the reach of the LHC.

Gauged L_mu - L_tau and different Muon Neutrino and Anti-Neutrino Oscillations: MINOS and beyond

If a Z' gauge boson of a gauged L_mu - L_tau symmetry is very light, it is associated with a long-range leptonic force. In this case the particles in the Sun create via mixing of Z' with the Standard Model Z a flavor-dependent potential for muon neutrinos in terrestrial long-baseline experiments. The potential changes sign for anti-neutrinos and hence can lead to apparent differences in neutrino and anti-neutrino oscillations without introducing CP or CPT violation. This could for instance explain the recently found discrepancy in the survival probabilities of muon neutrinos and anti-neutrinos in the MINOS experiment. We obtain the associated parameters of gauged L_mu - L_tau required to explain this anomaly. The consequences for future long-baseline experiments and for the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon are discussed. The main feature of our explanation is that atmospheric neutrino mixing has to be non-maximal. Neutrino masses tend to be quasi-degenerate.

Neutrino Mass Sum-rules in Flavor Symmetry Models

Four different neutrino mass sum-rules have been analyzed: these frequently arise in flavor symmetry models based on the groups A_4, S_4 or T', which are often constructed to generate tri-bimaximal mixing. In general, neutrino mass can be probed in three different ways, using beta decay, neutrino-less double beta decay and cosmology. The general relations between the corresponding three neutrino mass observables are well known. The sum-rules lead to relations between the observables that are different from the general case and therefore only certain regions in parameter space are allowed. Plots of the neutrino mass observables are given for the sum-rules, and analytical expressions for the observables are provided. The case of deviations from the exact sum-rules is also discussed, which can introduce new features. The sum-rules could be used to distinguish some of the many models in the literature, which all lead to the same neutrino oscillation results.

Deviations from tribimaximal mixing due to the vacuum expectation value misalignment in A_4 models

The addition of an A_4 family symmetry and extended Higgs sector to the Standard Model can generate the tribimaximal mixing pattern for leptons, assuming the correct vacuum expectation value alignment of the Higgs scalars. Deviating this alignment affects the predictions for the neutrino oscillation and neutrino mass observables. An attempt is made to classify the plethora of models in the literature, with respect to the chosen A_4 particle assignments. Of these models, two particularly popular examples have been analyzed for deviations from tribimaximal mixing by perturbing the vacuum expectation value alignments. The effect of perturbations on the mixing angle observables is studied. However, it is only investigation of the mass-related observables (the effective mass for neutrinoless double beta decay and the sum of masses from cosmology) that can lead to the exclusion of particular models by constraints from future data, which indicates the importance of neutrino mass in disentangling models. The models have also been tested for fine-tuning of the parameters. Furthermore, a well-known seesaw model is generalized to include additional scalars, which transform as representations of A_4 not included in the original model.

On Leptonic Unitary Triangles and Boomerangs

We review the idea of leptonic unitary triangles and extend the concept of the recently proposed unitary boomerangs to the lepton sector. Using a convenient parameterization of the lepton mixing, we provide approximate expressions for the side lengths and the angles of the six different triangles and give examples of leptonic unitary boomerangs. Possible applications of the leptonic unitary boomerangs are also briefly discussed.

Inverse Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay Revisited: Neutrinos, Higgs Triplets and a Muon Collider

We revisit the process of inverse neutrino-less double beta decay (e e -> W W) at future linear colliders. The cases of Majorana neutrino and Higgs triplet exchange are considered. We also discuss the processes e mu -> W W and mu mu -> W W, which are motivated by the possibility of muon colliders. For heavy neutrino exchange and center-of-mass energies larger than 1 TeV, we show that masses up to 10^6 (10^5) GeV could be probed for e-e and e-mu machines, respectively. The stringent limits for mixing of heavy neutrinos with muons render mu mu -> W W less promising, even though this process is not constrained by limits from neutrino-less double beta decay. If Higgs triplets are responsible for inverse neutrino-less double beta decay, observable signals are only possible if a very narrow resonance is met. We also consider unitarity aspects of the process in case both Higgs triplets and neutrinos are exchanged. An exact see-saw relation connecting low energy data with heavy neutrino and triplet parameters is found.

Possible Alternatives to Tri-bimaximal Mixing

Possible alternatives to tri-bimaximal mixing are presented based on other symmetry principles, and their predictions for |U_{e3}|, sin^2 theta_{12} and sin^2 theta_{23} are compared to the present neutrino mixing data. In some cases perturbations are required to give better agreement with the data, and the use of a minimal approach is illustrated. Precise experimental determinations of the mixing parameters will be required to decipher the correct mixing pattern and to pin down the appropriate flavor symmetry.

Flavor Composition of UHE Neutrinos at Source and at Neutrino Telescopes

We parameterize the initial flux composition of high energy astrophysical neutrinos as (Phi_e^0 : Phi_mu^0 : Phi_tau^0) = (1 : n : 0), where n characterizes the source. All usually assumed neutrino sources appear as limits of this simple parametrization. We investigate how precise neutrino telescopes can pin down the value of n. We furthermore show that there is a neutrino mixing scenario in which the ratio of muon neutrinos to the other neutrinos takes a constant value regardless of the initial flux composition. This occurs when the muon neutrino survival probability takes its minimal allowed value. The phenomenological consequences of this very predictive neutrino mixing scenario are given.

On Non-Unitary Lepton Mixing and Neutrino Mass Observables

There are three observables related to neutrino mass, namely the kinematic mass in direct searches, the effective mass in neutrino-less double beta decay, and the sum of neutrino masses in cosmology. In the limit of exactly degenerate neutrinos there are very simple relations between those observables, and we calculate corrections due to non-zero mass splitting. We discuss how the possible non-unitarity of the lepton mixing matrix may modify these relations and find in particular that corrections due to non-unitarity can exceed the corrections due to mass splitting. We furthermore investigate constraints from neutrino-less double beta decay on mass and mixing parameters of heavy neutrinos in the type I see-saw mechanism. There are constraints from assuming that heavy neutrinos are exchanged, and constraints from assuming light neutrino exchange, which arise from an exact see-saw relation. The latter has its origin in the unitarity violation arising in see-saw scenarios. We illustrate that the limits from the latter approach are much stronger. The drastic impact on inverse neutrino-less double beta decay (e e -> W W) is studied. We furthermore discuss neutrino mixing in case there is one or more light sterile neutrino. Neutrino oscillation probabilities for long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments are considered, and the analogy to general non-unitarity phenomenology, such as zero-distance effects, is pointed out.

Non-Unitary Lepton Mixing Matrix, Leptogenesis and Low Energy CP Violation

It is well-known that for unflavored leptogenesis there is in general no connection between low and high energy CP violation. We stress that for a non-unitary lepton mixing matrix this may not be the case. We give an illustrative example for this connection and show that the non-standard CP phases that are induced by non-unitarity can be responsible for observable effects in neutrino oscillation experiments as well as for the generation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Lepton Flavor Violation in decays such as tau -> mu gamma can also be induced at an observable level. We also comment on neutrino mass limits from leptogenesis, which get barely modified in case of a non-unitary mixing matrix.

Comparing Trimaximal Mixing and Its Variants with Deviations from Tri-bimaximal Mixing

We analyze in detail the predictions of "trimaximal" neutrino mixing, which is defined by a mixing matrix with identical second column elements. This column is therefore identical to the second column in the case of tri-bimaximal mixing. We also generalize trimaximal mixing by assuming that the other rows and columns of the mixing matrix individually have the same forms as for tri-bimaximal mixing. The phenomenology of these new mixing scenarios is studied. We emphasize how trimaximal mixings can be distinguished experimentally from broken tri-bimaximal mixing.

Large U_{e3} and Tri-bimaximal Mixing

We investigate in a model-independent way to what extent one can perturb tri-bimaximal mixing in order to generate a sizable value of |U_{e3}|, while at the same time keeping solar neutrino mixing near its measured value, which is close to sin^2 theta_{12} = 1/3. Three straightforward breaking mechanisms to generate |U_{e3}| of about 0.1 are considered. For charged lepton corrections, the suppression of a sizable contribution to sin^2 theta_{12} can be achieved if CP violation in neutrino oscillations is almost maximal. Generation of the indicated value of |U_{e3}| of about 0.1 through renormalization group corrections requires the neutrinos to be quasi-degenerate in mass. The consistency with the allowed range of sin^2 theta_{12} together with large running of |U_{e3}| forces one of the Majorana phases to be close to pi. This implies large cancellations in the effective Majorana mass governing neutrino-less double beta, constraining it to lie near its minimum allowed value of m_0 cos 2 theta_{12}, where m_0 is greater than about 0.1 eV. Finally, explicit breaking of the neutrino mass matrix in the inverted hierarchical and quasi-degenerate neutrino mass spectrum cases is similarly correlated with the effective Majorana mass, although to a lesser extent. The implied values for the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle theta_{23} are given in all cases.

Scaling in the Neutrino Mass Matrix, mu-tau Symmetry and the See-Saw Mechanism

The scaling hypothesis postulates proportionality of two columns of the Majorana neutrino mass matrix in the flavor basis. This Ansatz was shown to lead to an inverted hierarchy and U_{e3} = 0. We discuss theoretical and phenomenological properties of this hypothesis. We show that (i) the neutrino mass matrix with scaling follows as a consequence of a generalized mu-tau symmetry imposed on the type-I see-saw model; (ii) there exists a unique texture for the Dirac mass matrix m_D which leads to scaling for arbitrary Majorana matrix M_R in the context of the type-I see-saw mechanism; (iii) unlike in the mu-tau symmetric case, a simple model with two right-handed neutrinos and scaling can lead to successful leptogenesis both with and without the inclusion of flavor effects.

Minimal Textures in Seesaw Mass Matrices and their low and high Energy Phenomenology

In an attempt to find minimal scenarios we study the implications of Dirac and Majorana mass matrices with texture zeros within the type I seesaw mechanism. For the Dirac mass matrices we consider 5 zero textures which we show to be the most minimal form that can successfully account for low energy phenomenology if the Majorana mass matrices are chosen minimal as well. For those, we consider both diagonal and even more minimal non-diagonal forms. The latter can be motivated e.g. by simple U(1) flavour symmetries and have two degenerate eigenvalues. We classify the allowed textures and discuss the ramifications for leptogenesis and lepton flavour violation.

Statistical Analysis of future Neutrino Mass Experiments including Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay

We perform a statistical analysis with the prospective results of future experiments on neutrino-less double beta decay, direct searches for neutrino mass (KATRIN) and cosmological observations. Realistic errors are used and the nuclear matrix element uncertainty for neutrino-less double beta decay is also taken into account. Three benchmark scenarios are introduced, corresponding to quasi-degenerate, inverse hierarchical neutrinos, and an intermediate case. We investigate to what extend these scenarios can be reconstructed. Furthermore, we check the compatibility of the scenarios with the claimed evidence of neutrino-less double beta decay.

Golden Ratio Prediction for Solar Neutrino Mixing

It has recently been speculated that the solar neutrino mixing angle is connected to the golden ratio phi. Two such proposals have been made, cot theta_{12} = phi and cos theta_{12} = phi/2. We compare these Ansatze and discuss a model leading to cos theta_{12} = phi/2 based on the dihedral group D_{10}. This symmetry is a natural candidate because the angle in the expression cos theta_{12} = phi/2 is simply pi/5, or 36 degrees. This is the exterior angle of a decagon and D_{10} is its rotational symmetry group. We also estimate radiative corrections to the golden ratio predictions.

Phenomenological consequences of four zero neutrino Yukawa textures

For type I seesaw and in the basis where the charged lepton and heavy right-handed neutrino mass matrices are real and diagonal, four has been shown to be the maximum number of zeros allowed in the neutrino Yukawa coupling matrix $Y_ν$. These four zero textures have been classified into two distinct categories. We investigate certain phenomenological consequences of these textures within a supersymmetric framework. This is done by using conditions implied on elements of the neutrino Majorana mass matrix for textures of each category in $Y_ν$. These conditions turn out to be stable under radiative corrections. Including the effective mass, which appears in neutrinoless double beta decay, along with the usual neutrino masses, mixing angles and phases, it is shown analytically and through scatter plots how restricted regions in the seesaw parameter space are selected by these conditions. We also make consequential statements on the yet unobserved radiative lepton flavor violating decays such as $μ\to e γ$. All these decay amplitudes are proportional to the moduli of entries of the neutrino Majorana mass matrix. We also show under which conditions the low energy CP violation, showing up in neutrino oscillations, is directly linked to the CP violation required for producing successful flavor dependent and flavor independent lepton asymmetries during leptogenesis.

Deviations from tri-bimaximal mixing

Current data indicates that lepton mixing is very close to the tri-bimaximal mixing scenario. In general, however, one expects deviations from any mixing scenario. We discuss several examples to perturb tri-bimaximal mixing, namely soft breaking, renormalization group running and charged lepton corrections. We also present a convenient parametrization of the PMNS matrix which takes advantage of the apparently close to tri-bimaximal mixing pattern. Finally, it is discussed how to generate values of U_{e3} which correspond to the recently found hint for non-zero U_{e3}.
