Observation of single defect relaxation in a freely suspended nano resonator

Relaxation of single defects in a nanometer sized resonator is observed by coupling surface acoustic waves to a freely suspended beam. The surface waves act on the resonator as driving forces being able to modify the internal friction in the beam. In analogy to classical experiments on internal friction in macroscopic samples, we perform frequency, amplitude, and temperature dependent experiments on the nano resonator and find a scenario which is consistent with the observation of single defect relaxation.

Probing Spin-Polarized Currents in the Quantum Hall Regime

An experiment to probe spin-polarized currents in the quantum Hall regime is suggested that takes advantage of the large Zeeman-splitting in the paramagnetic diluted magnetic semiconductor zinc manganese selenide (Zn$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$Se). In the proposed experiment spin-polarized electrons are injected by ZnMnSe-contacts into a gallium arsenide (GaAs) two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) arranged in a Hall bar geometry. We calculated the resulting Hall resistance for this experimental setup within the framework of the Landauer-Büttiker formalism. These calculations predict for 100% spininjection through the ZnMnSe-contacts a Hall resistance twice as high as in the case of no spin-polarized injection of charge carriers into a 2DEG for filling factor $ν=2$. We also investigated the influence of the equilibration of the spin-polarized electrons within the 2DEG on the Hall resistance. In addition, in our model we expect no coupling between the contact and the 2DEG for odd filling factors of the 2DEG for 100% spininjection, because of the opposite sign of the g-factors of ZnMnSe and GaAs.

Influence of manganese contamination on high-mobility GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures

Photoluminescence and magnetotransport measurements have been performed to assess the quality of modulation doped GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. The temporal evolution of the low-temperature electron mobility of samples prepared in a molecular beam epitaxy chamber containing manganese as a source material was studied. Mn contamination was identified to be responsible for the reduction of the electron mobility to 1 x 10^{6} cm^{2}/Vs and the appearance of a distinct photoluminescence band. In contrast, structures in which this signal is absent reach mobility values of 5.4 x 10^{6} cm^{2}/Vs. This directly proves that the epitaxy of high-mobility electron systems and structures containing GaMnAs layers, in principle, can be combined in one growth chamber.

Metamorphosis of the Quantum Hall Ferromagnet at $ν= 2/5$

We report on the dramatic evolution of the quantum Hall ferromagnet in the fractional quantum Hall regime at $ν= 2/5$ filling. A large enhancement in the characteristic timescale gives rise to a dynamical transition into a novel quantized Hall state. The observed Hall state is determined to be a zero-temperature phase distinct from the spin-polarized and spin-unpolarized $ν= 2/5$ fractional quantum Hall states. It is characterized by a strong temperature dependence and puzzling correlation between temperature and time.

Metastable phase in the quantum Hall ferromagnet

Time-dependent capacitance measurements reveal an unstable phase of electrons in gallium arsenide quantum well that occurs when two Landau levels with opposite spin are brought close to degeneracy by applying a gate voltage. This phase emerges below a critical temperature and displays a peculiar non-equilibrium dynamical evolution. The relaxation dynamics is found to follow a stretched exponential behavior and correlates with hysteresis loops observed by sweeping the magnetic field. These experiments indicate that metastable randomly-distributed magnetic domains are involved in the relaxation process in a way that is equivalently tunable by a change in gate voltage or temperature.

Large transconductance oscillations in a single-well vertical Aharonov-Bohm interferometer

Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interference is reported for the first time in the conductance of a vertical nanostructure based on a single GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well (QW). The two lowest subbands of the well are spatially separated by the Hartree barrier originating from electronic repulsion in the modulation-doped QW and provide AB two-path geometry. Split-gates control the in-plane electronic momentum dispersion. In our system, we have clearly demonstrated AB interference in both electrostatic and magnetic modes. In the latter case the magnetic field was applied parallel to the QW plane, and perpendicular to the 0.02 um^2 AB loop. In the electrostatic mode of operation the single-QW scheme adopted led to large transconductance oscillations with relative amplitudes exceeding 30 %. The relevance of the present design strategy for the implementation of coherent nanoelectronic devices is underlined.

First-Order Phase Transition in a Quantum Hall Ferromagnet

The single-particle energy spectrum of a two-dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular magnetic field consists of equally-spaced spin-split Landau levels, whose degeneracy is proportional to the magnetic field strength. At integer and particular fractional ratios between the number of electrons and the degeneracy of a Landau level (filling factors n) quantum Hall effects occur, characterised by a vanishingly small longitudinal resistance and quantised Hall voltage. The quantum Hall regime offers unique possibilities for the study of cooperative phenomena in many-particle systems under well-controlled conditions. Among the fields that benefit from quantum-Hall studies is magnetism, which remains poorly understood in conventional material. Both isotropic and anisotropic ferromagnetic ground states have been predicted and few of them have been experimentally studied in quantum Hall samples with different geometries and filling factors. Here we present evidence of first-order phase transitions in n = 2 and 4 quantum Hall states confined to a wide gallium arsenide quantum well. The observed hysteretic behaviour and anomalous temperature dependence in the longitudinal resistivity indicate the occurrence of a transition between the two distinct ground states of an Ising quantum-Hall ferromagnet. Detailed many-body calculations allowed the identification of the microscopic origin of the anisotropy field.
