Scattering of solitons in binary Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbit and Rabi couplings

In this paper we study the scattering of solitons in a binary Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) including SO- and Rabi-couplings. To this end, we derive a reduced ODE model in view to provide a variational description of the collisional dynamics. Also, we assume negative intra- and inter-component interaction strengths, such that one obtains localized solutions even in absence of external potentials. By performing extensive numerical simulations of this model we observe that, for specific conditions, the final propagation velocity of the scattered solitons could be highly sensitive to small changes in the initial conditions, being a possible signature of chaos. Additionally, there are infinitely many intervals of regularity emerging from the obtained chaotic-like regions and forming a fractal-like structure of reflection/transmission windows. Finally, we investigate how the value of the spin-orbit coupling strength changes the critical velocities, which are minimum/maximum values for the occurrence of solitons bound-states, as well as the fractal-like structure.

Localized solutions of Lugiato-Lefever equations with focused pump

Lugiato-Lefever (LL) equations in one and two dimensions (1D and 2D) accurately describe the dynamics of optical fields in pumped lossy cavities with the intrinsic Kerr nonlinearity. The external pump is usually assumed to be uniform, but it can be made tightly focused too -- in particular, for building small pixels. We obtain solutions of the LL equations, with both the focusing and defocusing intrinsic nonlinearity, for 1D and 2D confined modes supported by the localized pump. In the 1D setting, we first develop a simple perturbation theory, based in the sech ansatz, in the case of weak pump and loss. Then, a family of exact analytical solutions for spatially confined modes is produced for the pump focused in the form of a delta-function, with a nonlinear loss (two-photon absorption) added to the LL model. Numerical findings demonstrate that these exact solutions are stable, both dynamically and structurally (the latter means that stable numerical solutions close to the exact ones are found when a specific condition, necessary for the existence of the analytical solution, does not hold). In 2D, vast families of stable confined modes are produced by means of a variational approximation and full numerical simulations.

Effective equations for repulsive quasi-1D BECs trapped with anharmonic transverse potentials

One-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations are derived to describe the axial effective dynamics of cigar-shaped atomic repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates trapped with anharmonic transverse potentials. The accuracy of these equations in the perturbative, Thomas-Fermi, and crossover regimes were verified numerically by comparing the ground-state profiles, transverse chemical potentials and oscillation patterns with those results obtained for the full three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. This procedure allows us to derive different patterns of 1D nonlinear models by the control of the transverse confinement.

Modulation of localized solutions in quadratic-cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inhomogeneous coefficients

We study the presence of exact localized solutions in a quadratic-cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inhomogeneous nonlinearities. Using a specific ansatz, we transform the nonautonomous nonlinear equation into an autonomous one, which engenders composed states corresponding to solutions localized in space, with an oscillating behavior in time. Direct numerical simulations are employed to verify the stability of the modulated solutions against small random perturbations.

Zero-dimensional limit of the two-dimensional Lugiato-Lefever equation

We study effects of tight harmonic-oscillator confinement on the electromagnetic field in a laser cavity by solving the two-dimensional Lugiato-Lefever (2D LL) equation, taking into account self- focusing or defocusing nonlinearity, losses, pump, and the trapping potential. Tightly confined (quasi-zero-dimensional) optical modes (pixels), produced by this model, are analyzed by means of the variational approximation, which provides a qualitative picture of the ensuing phenomena. This is followed by systematic simulations of the time-dependent 2D LL equation, which reveal the shape, stability, and dynamical behavior of the resulting localized patterns. In this way, we produce stability diagrams for the expected pixels. Then, we consider the LL model with the vortical pump, showing that it can produce stable pixels with embedded vorticity (vortex solitons) in remarkably broad sta- bility areas. Alongside confined vortices with the simple single-ring structure, in the latter case the LL model gives rise to stable multi-ring states, with a spiral phase field. In addition to the numeri- cal results, a qualitatively correct description of the vortex solitons is provided by the Thomas-Fermi approximation.

Fractal scattering of Gaussian solitons in directional couplers with logarithmic nonlinearities

In this paper we study the interaction of Gaussian solitons in a dispersive and nonlinear media with log-law nonlinearity. The model is described by the coupled logarithmic nonlinear Schrödinger equations, which is a nonintegrable system that allows the observation of a very rich scenario in the collision patterns. By employing a variational approach and direct numerical simulations, we observe a fractal-scattering phenomenon from the exit velocities of each soliton as a function of the input velocities. Furthermore, we introduce a linearization model to identify the position of the reflection/transmission window that emerges within the chaotic region. This enable us the possibility of controlling the scattering of solitons as well as the lifetime of bound states.

Modulation instability in high-order coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with saturable nonlinearities

The influence of a saturable nonlinearity on the modulation instability in oppositely directed coupler in the presence of high-order effects is investigated. By using the standard linear stability analysis, we obtain the instability gain that exhibits a significant change in the bands of instability due to the effects of a saturable nonlinearity. We also show that even in the presence of saturation there is no change in instability gain when we compare the results obtained for both channels not influenced by self-steepening effect or for both channels influenced by self-steepening effect but opposite in sign. Regarding the Raman effect, there is reflection symmetry (asymmetry) to the gain at zero perturbation frequency when the values of the Raman coefficients in each directional coupler are equal and with same (opposite) sign. For the anomalous group velocity dispersion regime we observe that the growth of the saturation parameter is followed by an increase in the null gain region near Ω = 0, enlarging the separation of the instability bands close to this point. Finally, we show that an efficient control of the modulation instability can be realized by adjusting self-steepening effect and intrapulse Raman scattering, even in the presence of a saturable nonlinearity.

Localized modes in quasi-2D Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbit and Rabi couplings

We consider a two-component pancake-shaped, i.e., effectively two-dimensional (2D), Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) coupled by the spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi terms. The SO coupling adopted here is of the mixed Rashba-Dresselhaus type. For this configuration, we derive a system of two 2D nonpolynomial Schrödinger equations (NPSEs), for both attractive and repulsive interatomic interactions. In the low- and high-density limits, the system amounts to previously known models, namely, the usual 2D Gross-Pitaevskii equation, or the Schrödinger equation with the nonlinearity of power 7/3. We present simple approximate localized solutions, obtained by treating the SO and Rabi terms as perturbations. Localized solutions of the full NPSE system are obtained in a numerical form. Remarkably, in the case of the attractive nonlinearity acting in free space (i.e., without any 2D trapping potential), we find parameter regions where the SO and Rabi couplings make 2D fundamental solitons dynamically stable.
