Unavoidability of nonclassicality loss in PT-symmetric systems

We show that the loss of nonclassicality (including quantum entanglement) cannot be compensated by the (incoherent) amplification of PT-symmetric systems. We address this problem by manipulating the quantum fluctuating forces in the Heisenberg-Langevin approach. Specifically, we analyze the dynamics of two nonlinearly coupled oscillator modes in a PT-symmetric system. An analytical solution allows us to separate the contribution of reservoir fluctuations from the evolution of quantum statistical properties of the modes. In general, as reservoir fluctuations act constantly, the complete loss of nonclassicality and entanglement is observed for long times. To elucidate the role of reservoir fluctuations in a long-time evolution of nonclassicality and entanglement, we consider and compare the predictions from two alternative models in which no fatal long-time detrimental effects on the nonclassicality and entanglement are observed. This is so as, in the first semiclassical model, no reservoir fluctuations are considered at all. This, however, violates the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The second, more elaborated, model obeys the fluctuation-dissipation relations as it partly involves reservoir fluctuations. However, to prevent from the above long-time detrimental effects, the reservoir fluctuations have to be endowed with the nonphysical properties of a sink model. In both models, additional incorporation of the omitted reservoir fluctuations results in their physically consistent behavior. This behavior, however, predicts the gradual loss of the nonclassicality and entanglement. Thus the effects of reservoir fluctuations related to damping cannot be compensated by those related to amplification.

Nonclassical light at exceptional points of a quantum PT-symmetric two-mode system

A two-mode optical parity-time (PT) symmetric system, with gain and damping, described by a quantum quadratic Hamiltonian with additional small Kerr-like nonlinear terms, is analyzed from the point of view of nonclassical-light generation. Two kinds of stationary states with different types of (in)stability are revealed. Properties of one of these are related to the presence of semiclassical exceptional points, i.e., exotic degeneracies of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian describing the studied system without quantum jumps. The evolution of the logarithmic negativity, principal squeezing variances, and sub-shot-noise photon-number correlations, considered as entanglement and non-classicality quantifiers, is analyzed in the approximation of linear-operator corrections to the classical solution. Suitable conditions for nonclassical-light generation are identified in the oscillatory regime, especially at and around exceptional points that considerably enhance the nonlinear interaction and, thus, the non-classicality of the generated light. The role of quantum fluctuations, inevitably accompanying attenuation and amplification in the evolution of quantum states, is elucidated. The evolution of the system is analyzed for different initial conditions.

Entanglement between an auto-ionization system and a neighbor atom

Entanglement between two electrons belonging to an auto-ionization system and a neighbor two-level atom produced by the dipole-dipole interaction is studied. The entanglement is quantified using the quadratic negativity of a bipartite system including the continuum of states. Suitable conditions for the generation of highly entangled states of two electrons are revealed. Internal structure of the entanglement is elucidated using the spectral density of quadratic negativity.

Sudden vanishing and reappearance of nonclassical effects: General occurrence of finite-time decays and periodic vanishings of nonclassicality and entanglement witnesses

Analyses of phenomena exhibiting finite-time decay of quantum entanglement have recently attracted considerable attention. Such decay is often referred to as sudden vanishing (or sudden death) of entanglement, which can be followed by its sudden reappearance (or sudden rebirth). We analyze various finite-time decays (for dissipative systems) and analogous periodic vanishings (for unitary systems) of nonclassical correlations as described by violations of classical inequalities and the corresponding nonclassicality witnesses (or quantumness witnesses), which are not necessarily entanglement witnesses. We show that these sudden vanishings are universal phenomena and can be observed: (i) not only for two- or multi-mode but also for single-mode nonclassical fields, (ii) not solely for dissipative systems, and (iii) at evolution times which are usually different from those of sudden vanishings and reappearances of quantum entanglement.

Photoelectron spectra in an autoionization system interacting with a neighboring atom

Photoelectron ionization spectra of an autoionization system with one discrete level interacting with a neighbor two-level atom are discussed. The formula for long-time ionization spectra is derived. According to this formula, the spectra can be composed of up to eight peaks. Moreover, the Fano-like zeros for weak optical pumping have been identified in these spectra. The conditional ionization spectra depending on the state of the neighbor atom exhibit oscillations at the Rabi frequency. Dynamical spectral zeros occurring once per the Rabi period have been revealed in these spectra.

Photoelectron ionization spectra in a system interacting with a neighbor atom

Photoelectron ionization spectra of a system interacting with a neighbor two-level atom are investigated using the Laplace-transform method. These spectra are typically composed of several peaks. Photoelectron ionization spectra conditioned by the measurement on the two-level atom show oscillations at the Rabi frequency. The presence of spectral zeros occurring periodically with the Rabi period is predicted. This phenomenon is analyzed in detail.

Two-mode optical state truncation and generation of maximally entangled states in pumped nonlinear couplers

Schemes for optical-state truncation of two cavity modes are analysed. The systems, referred to as the nonlinear quantum scissors devices, comprise two coupled nonlinear oscillators (Kerr nonlinear coupler) with one or two of them pumped by external classical fields. It is shown that the quantum evolution of the pumped couplers can be closed in a two-qubit Hilbert space spanned by vacuum and single-photon states only. Thus, the pumped couplers can behave as a two-qubit system. Analysis of time evolution of the quantum entanglement shows that Bell states can be generated. A possible implementation of the couplers is suggested in a pumped double-ring cavity with resonantly enhanced Kerr nonlinearities in an electromagnetically-induced transparency scheme. The fragility of the generated states and their entanglement due to the standard dissipation and phase damping are discussed by numerically solving two types of master equations.

Kerr nonlinear coupler and entanglement

We discuss a model comprising two coupled nonlinear oscillators (Kerr-like nonlinear coupler) with one of them pumped by an external coherent excitation. Applying the method of nonlinear quantum scissors we show that the quantum evolution of the coupler can be closed within a finite set of n-photon Fock states. Moreover, we show that the system is able to generate Bell-like states and, as a consequence, the coupler discussed behaves as a two-qubit system. We also analyze the effects of dissipation on entanglement of formation parametrized by concurrence.

Dissipation in systems of linear and nonlinear quantum scissors

We analyze truncation of coherent states up to a single-photon Fock state by applying linear quantum scissors, utilizing the projection synthesis in a linear optical system, and nonlinear quantum scissors, implemented by periodically driven cavity with a Kerr medium. Dissipation effects on optical truncation are studied in the Langevin and master equation approaches. Formulas for the fidelity of lossy quantum scissors are found.

Quantum-optical states in finite-dimensional Hilbert space. I. General formalism

The interest in quantum-optical states confined in finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces has recently been stimulated by the progress in quantum computing, quantum-optical state preparation, and measurement techniques, in particular, by the development of the discrete quantum-state tomography. In the first part of our review we present two essentially different approaches to define harmonic oscillator states in the finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. One of them is related to the truncation scheme of Pegg, Phillips and Barnett [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 1604 (1998)] -- the so-called quantum scissors device. The second method corresponds to the truncation scheme of Leoński and Tanaś [Phys. Rev. A 49, R20 (1994)]. We propose some new definitions of the states related to these truncation schemes and find their explicit forms in the Fock representation. We discuss finite-dimensional generalizations of coherent states, phase coherent states, displaced number states, Schrödinger cats, and squeezed vacuum. We show some intriguing properties of the states with the help of the discrete Wigner function.
