Er doped oxide nanoparticles in silica based optical fibres

Erbium doped materials are of great interest in optical telecommunications due to the Er3+ intra-4f emission at 1.54 ?m. Erbium doped fibre amplifiers (EDFA) were developed in silica glass because of the low losses at this wavelength and the reliability of this glass. Developments of new rare earth doped fibre amplifiers aim to control their spectroscopic properties including shape and width of the gain curve and optical quantum efficiency. Standard silica glass modifiers, such as aluminium, result in very good properties in current EDFA. However, for more drastic spectroscopic changes, more important modifications of the rare earth ions local environment are required. To address this aim, we present a fibre fabrication route creating rare earth doped calcia?silica or calcia?phosphosilica nanoparticles embedded in silica glass. By adding alkaline earth elements such as calcium, in low concentration, one can obtain a glass with an immisci- bility gap so that phase separation occurs with an appropriate heat treatment. We investigated the role of two elements: calcium and phosphorus (a standard silica modifier). Scanning electron microscopy shows that nanoparticles are only observed when calcium is incorporated. The size of the particles is determined to be around 50 nm in preform samples. The nature of these particles depends on phosphorus content: without P, electron diffraction shows that the particles are amorphous whilst they are partially crystalline when phosphorus is added. In addition through use of energy dispersive x-ray techniques, we have shown that erbium ions are located in the nanoparticles.

Role of CaO addition in the local order around Erbium in SiO2 ?GeO2 ?P2O5 fiber preforms

The development of materials for optical signal processing represents a major issue in present technology. In this contribution we present a study on Er-doped fiber preforms where particular attention is devoted on how the addition of CaO in the glass modifies the local environment of the rare earth. The results from photoluminescence and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) are compared and a clear link between the width of the emission line at 1.5 $μ$m and the amorphous/crystalline local structure around the Er3+ ion is evidenced.

Visible and near infra-red up-conversion in Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped silica fibres under 980 nm excitation

The spectroscopic properties of Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped silica fibers under excitation at 980 nm are reported. Three distinct up-conversion fluorescence bands were observed in the visible to near infra-red regions. The blue and red fluorescence bands at 475 and 650 nm, respectively, were found to originate from the 1G4 level of Tm3+. A three step up-conversion process was established as the populating mechanism for these fluorescence bands. The fluorescence band at 800 nm was found to originate from two possible transitions in Tm3+; one being the transition from the 3H4 to 3H6 manifold which was found to dominate at low pump powers; the other being the transition from the 1G4 to 3H6 level which dominates at higher pump powers. The fluorescence lifetime of the 3H4 and 3F4 levels of Tm3+ and 2F5/2 level of Yb3+ were studied as a function of Yb3+ concentration, with no significant energy back transfer from Tm3+ to Yb3+ observed.

Thulium environment in a silica doped optical fibre

Thulium-doped optical fibre amplifiers (TDFA) are developed to extend the optical telecommunication wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) bandwidth in the so-called S-band (1460-1530 nm). The radiative transition at 1.47 lm (3H4 -> 3F4) competes with a non-radiative multi-phonon de-excitation (3H4 -> 3H5). The quantum efficiency of the transition of interest is then highly affected by the phonon energy (Ep) of the material. For reliability reasons, oxide glasses are preferred but suffer from high phonon energy. In the case of silica glass, Ep is around 1100 cm-1 and quantum efficiency is as low as 2%. To improve it, phonon energy in the thulium environment must be lowered. For that reason, aluminium is added and we explore three different core compositions: pure silica, and silica slightly modified with germanium or phosphorus. The role of aluminium is studied through fluorescence decay curves, fitted according to the continuous function decay analysis. From this analysis, modification of the thulium local environment due to aluminium is evidenced.
