Parabolic Classical Curvature Flows

We consider classical curvature flows: 1-parameter families of convex embeddings of the 2-sphere into Euclidean 3-space which evolve by an arbitrary (non-homogeneous) function of the radii of curvature. The associated flow of the radii of curvature is a second order system of partial differential equations which we show decouples to highest order. We determine the conditions for this system to be parabolic and investigate the lower order terms. The zeroth order terms are shown to form a Hamiltonian system, which is therefore completely integrable. We find conditions on parabolic curvature flows that ensure boundedness of various geometric quantities and investigate some examples, including powers of mean curvature flow, Gauss curvature flow and mean radius of curvature flow, as well as the non-homogeneous Bloore flow. As a new tool we introduce the Radii of Curvature diagram of a surface and its canonical hyperbolic metric. The relationship between these and the properties of Weingarten surfaces are also discussed.

A Converging Lagrangian Curvature Flow in the Space of Oriented Lines

Under mean radius of curvature flow, a closed convex surface in Euclidean space is known to expand exponentially to infinity. In the 3-dimensional case we prove that the oriented normals to the flowing surface converge to the oriented normals of a round sphere whose centre is determined by the initial surface. To prove this we show that the oriented normal lines, considered as a surface in the space of all oriented lines, evolve by a parabolic flow which preserves the Lagrangian condition. Moreover, this flow converges to a holomorphic Lagrangian section, which form the set of oriented lines through a point. The coordinates of this centre point are projections of the support function into the first non-zero eigenspace of the spherical Laplacian and are given by explicit integrals of initial surface data.

On the Geometry of Spaces of Oriented Geodesics

Let M be either a simply connected pseudo-Riemannian space of constant curvature or a rank one Riemannian symmetric space (other than the octonion hyperbolic plane), and consider the space L(M) of oriented geodesics of M. The space L(M) is a smooth homogeneous manifold and in this paper we describe all invariant symplectic structures, (para)complex structures, pseudo-Riemannian metrics and (para)Kaehler structure on L(M).

Totally Null Surfaces in Neutral Kaehler 4-Manifolds

We study the totally null surfaces of the neutral Kaehler metric on certain 4-manifolds. The tangent spaces of totally null surfaces are either self-dual ($α$-planes) or anti-self-dual ($β$-planes) and so we consider $α$-surfaces and $β$-surfaces. The metric of the examples we study, which include the spaces of oriented geodesics of 3-manifolds of constant curvature, are anti-self-dual, and so it is well-known that the $α$-planes are integrable and $α$-surfaces exist. These are holomorphic Lagrangian surfaces, which for the geodesic spaces correspond to totally umbilic foliations of the underlying 3-manifold. The $β$-surfaces are less known and our interest is mainly in their description. In particular, we classify the $β$-surfaces of the neutral Kaehler metric on $TN$, the tangent bundle to a Riemannian 2-manifold $N$. These include the spaces of oriented geodesics in Euclidean and Lorentz 3-space, for which we show that the $β$-surfaces are affine tangent bundles to curves of constant geodesic curvature on $S^2$ and $H^2$, respectively. In addition, we construct the $β$-surfaces of the space of oriented geodesics of hyperbolic 3-space.

On C$^2$-smooth Surfaces of Constant Width

A number of results for C$^2$-smooth surfaces of constant width in Euclidean 3-space ${\mathbb{E}}^3$ are obtained. In particular, an integral inequality for constant width surfaces is established. This is used to prove that the ratio of volume to cubed width of a constant width surface is reduced by shrinking it along its normal lines. We also give a characterization of surfaces of constant width that have rational support function. Our techniques, which are complex differential geometric in nature, allow us to construct explicit smooth surfaces of constant width in ${\mathbb{E}}^3$, and their focal sets. They also allow for easy construction of tetrahedrally symmetric surfaces of constant width.

A Neutral Kaehler Metric on Space of Time-like Lines in Lorentzian 3-space

We study the neutral Kähler metric on the space of time-like lines in Lorentzian ${\Bbb{E}}^3_1$, which we identify with the total space of the tangent bundle to the hyperbolic plane. We find all of the infinitesimal isometries of this metric, as well as the geodesics, and interpret them in terms of the Lorentzian metric on ${\Bbb{E}}^3_1$. In addition, we give a new characterisation of Weingarten surfaces in Euclidean ${\Bbb{E}}^3$ and Lorentzian ${\Bbb{E}}^3_1$ as the vanishing of the scalar curvature of the associated normal congruence in the space of oriented lines. Finally, we relate our construction to the classical Weierstrass representation of minimal and maximal surfaces in ${\Bbb{E}}^3$ and ${\Bbb{E}}^3_1$.

On area-stationary surfaces in certain neutral Kaehler 4-manifolds

We study surfaces in TN that are area-stationary with respect to a neutral Kaehler metric constructed on TN from a riemannian metric g on N. We show that holomorphic curves in TN are area-stationary, while lagrangian surfaces that are area-stationary are also holomorphic and hence totally null. However, in general, area stationary surfaces are not holomorphic. We prove this by constructing counter-examples. In the case where g is rotationally symmetric, we find all area stationary surfaces that arise as graphs of sections of the bundle TN$\to$N and that are rotationally symmetric. When (N,g) is the round 2-sphere, TN can be identified with the space of oriented affine lines in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$, and we exhibit a two parameter family of area-stationary tori that are neither holomorphic nor lagrangian.

Geodesic Flow on the Normal Congruence of a Minimal Surface

We study the geodesic flow on the normal line congruence of a minimal surface in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$ induced by the neutral Kähler metric on the space of oriented lines. The metric is lorentz with isolated degenerate points and the flow is shown to be completely integrable. In addition, we give a new holomorphic description of minimal surfaces in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$ and relate it to the classical Weierstrass representation.

Geodesic Flow on Global Holomorphic Sections of TS^2

We study the geodesic flow on the global holomorphic sections of the bundle $π:{TS}^2\to {S}^2$ induced by the neutral Kähler metric on the space of oriented lines of ${\Bbb{R}}^3$, which we identify with ${TS}^2$. This flow is shown to be completely integrable when the sections are symplectic and the behaviour of the geodesics is described.

On Hamilton's Characteristic Functions for Reflection

We review the complex differential geometry of the space of oriented affine lines in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$ and give a description of Hamilton's characteristic functions for reflection in an oriented C$^1$ surface in terms of this geometry.

The Geometry of Focal Sets

The space ${\Bbb{L}}$ of oriented lines, or rays, in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$ is a 4-dimensional space with an abundance of natural geometric structure. In particular, it boasts a neutral Kähler metric which is closely related to the Euclidean metric on ${\Bbb{R}}^3$. In this paper we explore the relationship between the focal set of a line congruence (or 2-parameter family of oriented lines in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$) and the geometry induced on the associated surface in ${\Bbb{L}}$. The physical context of such sets is geometric optics in a homogeneous isotropic medium, and so, to illustrate the method, we compute the focal set of the $k^{th}$ reflection of a point source off the inside of a cylinder. The focal sets, which we explicitly parameterize, exhibit unexpected symmetries, and are found to fit well with observable phenomena.

Reflection in a Translation Invariant Surface

We prove that the focal set generated by the reflection of a point source off a translation invariant surface consists of two sets: a curve and a surface. The focal curve lies in the plane orthogonal to the symmetry direction containing the source, while the focal surface is translation invariant. This is done by constructing explicitly the focal set of the reflected line congruence (2-parameter family of oriented lines in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$) with the aid of the natural complex structure on the space of all oriented affine lines.

Level sets of functions and symmetry sets of smooth surface sections

We prove that the level sets of a real C^s function of two variables near a non-degenerate critical point are of class C^[s/2] and apply this to the study of planar sections of surfaces close to the singular section by the tangent plane at hyperbolic points or elliptic points, and in particular at umbilic points. We also analyse the cases coming from degenerate critical points, corresponding to elliptic cusps of Gauss on a surface, where the differentiability is now reduced to C^[s/4]. However in all our applications to symmetry sets of families of plane curves, we assume the C^infty smoothness.

An Indefinite Kaehler Metric on the Space of Oriented Lines

The total space of the tangent bundle of a Kähler manifold admits a canonical Kähler structure. Parallel translation identifies the space ${\Bbb{T}}$ of oriented affine lines in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$ with the tangent bundle of $S^2$. Thus, the round metric on $S^2$ induces a Kähler structure on ${\Bbb{T}}$ which turns out to have a metric of neutral signature. It is shown that the isometry group of this metric is isomorphic to the isometry group of the Euclidean metric on ${\Bbb{R}}^3$. The geodesics of this metric are either planes or helicoids in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$. The signature of the metric induced on a surface $Σ$ in ${\Bbb{T}}$ is determined by the degree of twisting of the associated line congruence in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$, and we show that, for $Σ$ Lagrangian, the metric is either Lorentz or totally null. For such surfaces it is proven that the Keller-Maslov index counts the number of isolated complex points of ${\Bbb{J}}$ inside a closed curve on $Σ$.

The Casimir Effect Between Non-Parallel Plates by Geometric Optics

Recent work by Jaffe and Scardicchio has expressed the optical approximation to the Casimir effect as a sum over geometric quantities. The first two authors have developed a technique which uses the complex geometry of the space of oriented affine lines in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$ to describe reflection of rays off a surface. This allows the quantities in the optical approximation to the Casimir effect to be calculated. To illustrate this we determine explicitly and in closed form the geometric optics approximation of the Casimir force between two non-parallel plates. By making one of the plates finite we regularise the divergence that is caused by the intersection of the planes. In the parallel plate limit we prove that our expression reduces to Casimir's original result.

Reflection of a wave off a surface

Recent advances in twistor theory are applied to geometric optics in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$. The general formulae for reflection of a wavefront in a surface are derived and in three special cases explicit descriptions are provided: when the reflecting surface is a plane, when the incoming wave is a plane and when the incoming wave is spherical. In each case particular examples are computed exactly and the results plotted to illustrate the outgoing wavefront.

Generalised Surfaces in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$

The correspondence between 2-parameter families of oriented lines in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$ and surfaces in $T{\Bbb{P}}^1$ is studied, and the geometric properties of the lines are related to the complex geometry of the surface. Congruences generated by global sections of $T{\Bbb{P}}^1$ are investigated and a number of theorems are proven that generalise results for closed convex surfaces in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$.

On the Space of Oriented Affine Lines in $R^3$

We introduce a local coordinate description for the correspondence between the space of oriented affine lines in Euclidean ${\Bbb{R}}^3$ and the tangent bundle to the 2-sphere. These can be utilised to give canonical coordinates on surfaces in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$, as we illustrate with a number of explicit examples.
