An introduction to multiscale techniques in the theory of Anderson localization. Part I

These lectures present some basic ideas and techniques in the spectral analysis of lattice Schrodinger operators with disordered potentials. In contrast to the classical Anderson tight binding model, the randomness is also allowed to possess only finitely many degrees of freedom. This refers to dynamically defined potentials, i.e., those given by evaluating a function along an orbit of some ergodic transformation (or of several commuting such transformations on higher-dimensional lattices). Classical localization theorems by Frohlich--Spencer for large disorders are presented, both for random potentials in all dimensions, as well as even quasi-periodic ones on the line. After providing the needed background on subharmonic functions, we then discuss the Bourgain-Goldstein theorem on localization for quasiperiodic Schrodinger cocycles assuming positive Lyapunov exponents.

Characterization of large energy solutions of the equivariant wave map problem: I

We consider 1-equivariant wave maps from 1+2 dimensions to the 2-sphere. For wave maps of topological degree zero we prove global existence and scattering for energies below twice the energy of harmonic map, Q, given by stereographic projection. We deduce this result via the concentration compactness/rigidity method developed by the second author and Merle. In particular, we establish a classification of equivariant wave maps with trajectories that are pre-compact in the energy space up to the scaling symmetry of the equation. Indeed, a wave map of this type can only be either 0 or Q up to a rescaling. This gives a proof in the equivariant case of a refined version of the threshold conjecture adapted to the degree zero theory where the true threshold is 2E(Q), not E(Q). The aforementioned global existence and scattering statement can also be deduced by considering the work of Sterbenz and Tataru in the equivariant setting. For wave maps of topological degree one, we establish a classification of solutions blowing up in finite time with energies less than three times the energy of Q. Under this restriction on the energy, we show that a blow-up solution of degree one is essentially the sum of a rescaled Q plus a remainder term of topological degree zero of energy less than twice the energy of Q. This result reveals the universal character of the known blow-up constructions for degree one, 1-equivariant wave maps of Krieger, the fourth author, and Tataru as well as Raphael and Rodnianski.

Weyl sums and the Lyapunov exponent for the skew-shift Schrödinger cocycle

We study the one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operator with the skew-shift potential $2λ\cos\left(2π\left(\binom{j}{2} ω+jy+x\right)\right)$. This potential is long conjectured to behave like a random one, i.e., it is expected to produce Anderson localization for arbitrarily small coupling constants $λ>0$. In this paper, we introduce a novel perturbative approach for studying the zero-energy Lyapunov exponent $L(λ)$ at small $λ$. Our main results establish that, to second order in perturbation theory, a natural upper bound on $L(λ)$ is fully consistent with $L(λ)$ being positive and satisfying the usual Figotin-Pastur type asymptotics $L(λ)\sim Cλ^2$ as $λ\to 0$. The analogous quantity behaves completely differently in the Almost-Mathieu model, whose zero-energy Lyapunov exponent vanishes for $λ<1$. The main technical work consists in establishing good lower bounds on the exponential sums (quadratic Weyl sums) that appear in our perturbation series.

A higher dimensional Bourgain-Dyatlov fractal uncertainty principle

We establish a version of the fractal uncertainty principle, obtained by Bourgain and Dyatlov in 2016, in higher dimensions. The Fourier support is limited to sets $Y\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ which can be covered by finitely many products of $δ$-regular sets in one dimension, but relative to arbitrary axes. Our results remain true if $Y$ is distorted by diffeomorphisms. Our method combines the original approach by Bourgain and Dyatlov, in the more quantitative 2017 rendition by Jin and Zhang, with Cartan set techniques.

Effective multi-scale approach to the Schrödinger cocycle over a skew shift base

We prove a conditional theorem on the positivity of the Lyapunov exponent for a Schrödinger cocycle over a skew shift base with a cosine potential and the golden ratio as frequency. For coupling below 1, which is the threshold for Herman's subharmonicity trick, we formulate three conditions on the Lyapunov exponent in a finite but large volume and on the associated large deviation estimates at that scale. Our main results demonstrate that these finite-size conditions imply the positivity of the infinite volume Lyapunov exponent. This paper shows that it is possible to make the techniques developed for the study of Schrödinger operators with deterministic potentials, based on large deviation estimates and the avalanche principle, effective.

Long time dynamics for weakly damped nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations

We continue our study of damped nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations. In our previous work we considered fixed positive damping and proved a form of the soliton resolution conjecture for radial solutions. In contrast, here we consider damping which decreases in time to 0. In the class of radial data we again establish soliton resolution provided the damping goes to 0 sufficiently slowly. While our previous work relied on invariant manifold theory, here we use the Lojasiewicz-Simon inequality applied to a suitable Lyapunov functional.

On the Spectrum of Multi-Frequency Quasiperiodic Schrödinger Operators with Large Coupling

We study multi-frequency quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators on $\mathbb{Z} $. We prove that for a large real analytic potential satisfying certain restrictions the spectrum consists of a single interval. The result is a consequence of a criterion for the spectrum to contain an interval at a given location that we establish non-perturbatively in the regime of positive Lyapunov exponent.

Global center stable manifold for the defocusing energy critical wave equation with potential

In this paper we consider the defocusing energy critical wave equation with a trapping potential in dimension $3$. We prove that the set of initial data for which solutions scatter to an unstable excited state $(ϕ, 0)$ forms a finite co-dimensional path connected $C^1$ manifold in the energy space. This manifold is a global and unique center-stable manifold associated with $(ϕ,0)$. It is constructed in a first step locally around any solution scattering to $ϕ$, which might be very far away from $ϕ$ in the $\dot{H}^1\times L^2(\mathbb{R}^3)$ norm. In a second crucial step a no-return property is proved for any solution which starts near, but not on the local manifolds. This ensures that the local manifolds form a global one. Scattering to an unstable steady state is therefore a non-generic behavior, in a strong topological sense in the energy space. This extends our previous result [18] to the nonradial case. The new ingredients here are (i) application of the reversed Strichartz estimate from [3] to construct a local center stable manifold near any solution that scatters to $(ϕ, 0)$. This is needed since the endpoint of the standard Strichartz estimates fails nonradially. (ii) The nonradial channel of energy estimate introduced by Duyckaerts-Kenig-Merle [14], which is used to show that solutions that start off but near the local manifolds associated with $ϕ$ emit some amount of energy into the far field in excess of the amount of energy beyond that of the steady state $ϕ$.

Structure formulas for wave operators

We establish quantitative estimates on the structure function arising in the representation of the intertwining wave operators of a Schroedinger operator in three dimensions. Regularity of zero energy is assumed throughout. This paper is related to, and corrects some inaccuracies in, the first author's work https://arxiv.org/abs/1101.0502

On localization and the spectrum of multi-frequency quasi-periodic operators

We study multi-frequency quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators on $\mathbb{Z}$ in the regime of positive Lyapunov exponent and for general analytic potentials. Combining Bourgain's semi-algebraic elimination of multiple resonances with the method of elimination of double resonances via resultants, we establish exponential finite-volume localization as well as the separation between the eigenvalues. In a follow-up paper we develop the method further to show that for potentials given by large generic trigonometric polynomials the spectrum consists of a single interval, as conjectured by Chulaevski and Sinai.

The Weber equation as a normal form with applications to top of the barrier scattering

In the paper we revisit the basic problem of tunneling near a nondegenerate global maximum of a potential on the line. We reduce the semiclassical Schrödinger equation to a Weber normal form by means of the Liouville-Green transform. We show that the diffeomorphism which effects this stretching of the independent variable lies in the same regularity class as the potential (analytic or infinitely differentiable) with respect to both variables, i.e., space and energy. We then apply the Weber normal form to the scattering problem for energies near the potential maximum. In particular we obtain a representation of the scattering matrix which is accurate up to multiplicative factors of the form 1 + o(1).

Stable soliton resolution for exterior wave maps in all equivariance classes

In this paper we consider finite energy, \ell-equivariant wave maps from 1+3-dimensional Minkowski space exterior to the unit ball at the origin into the 3-sphere. We impose a Dirichlet boundary condition at r=1, which in this context means that the boundary of the unit ball in the domain gets mapped to the north pole. Each such \ell-equivariant wave map has a fixed integer-valued topological degree, and in each degree class there is a unique harmonic map, which minimizes the energy for maps of the same degree. We prove that an arbitrary \ell-equivariant exterior wave map with finite energy scatters to the unique harmonic map in its degree class, i.e., soliton resolution. This extends the recent results of the first, second, and fourth authors on the 1-equivariant equation to higher equivariance classes, and thus completely resolves a conjecture of Bizon, Chmaj and Maliborski, who observed this asymptotic behavior numerically. The proof relies crucially on exterior energy estimates for the free radial wave equation in dimension d = 2 \ell +3, which are established in a companion paper.

Characterization of large energy solutions of the equivariant wave map problem: II

We consider 1-equivariant wave maps from 1+2 dimensions to the 2-sphere of finite energy. We establish a classification of all degree 1 global solutions whose energies are less than three times the energy of the harmonic map Q. In particular, for each global energy solution of topological degree 1, we show that the solution asymptotically decouples into a rescaled harmonic map plus a radiation term. Together with our companion article, where we consider the case of finite-time blow up, this gives a characterization of all 1-equivariant, degree 1 wave maps in the energy regime [E(Q), 3E(Q)).

Generic and non-generic behavior of solutions to the defocusing energy critical wave equation with potential in the radial case

In this paper, we continue our study [16] on the long time dynamics of radial solutions to defocusing energy critical wave equation with a trapping radial potential in 3 + 1 dimensions. For generic radial potentials (in the topological sense) there are only finitely many steady states which might be either stable or unstable. We first observe that there can be stable excited states (i.e., a steady state which is not the ground state) if the potential is large and attractive, although all small excited states are unstable. We prove that the set of initial data for which solutions scatter to any one unstable excited state forms a finite co-dimensional connected $C^1$ manifold in energy space. This amounts to the construction of the global path-connected, and unique, center-stable manifold associated with, but not necessarily close to, any unstable steady state. In particular, the set of data for which solutions scatter to unstable states has empty interior in the energy space, and generic radial solutions scatter to one of the stable steady states. Our main tools are (i) near any given finite energy radial initial data $(u_0,u_1)$ for which the solution $u(t)$ scatters to some unstable steady state $ϕ$ we construct a $C^1$ manifold containing $(u_0,u_1)$ with the property that any solution starting on the manifold scatters to $ϕ$; moreover, any solution remaining near the manifold for all positive times lies on the manifold (ii) an exterior energy inequality from [9,10,16]. The latter is used to obtain a result in the spirit of the one-pass theorem [22], albeit with completely different techniques

Homogeneity of the spectrum for quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators

We consider the one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operator $$ \bigl[H(x,ω)φ\bigr](n)\equiv -φ(n-1)-φ(n+1) + V(x + nω)φ(n)\ , $$ $n \in \mathbb{Z}$, $x,ω\in [0, 1]$ with real-analytic potential $V(x)$. Assume $L(E,ω)>0$ for all $E$. Let $\mathcal{S}_ω$ be the spectrum of $H(x,ω)$. For all $ω$ obeying the Diophantine condition $ω\in \mathbb{T}_{c,a}$, we show the following: if $\mathcal{S}_ω\cap (E',E")\neq \emptyset$, then $\mathcal{S}_ω\cap (E',E")$ is homogeneous in the sense of Carleson (see [Car83]). Furthermore, we prove, that if $G_i$, $i=1,2$ are two gaps with $1 > |G_1| \ge |G_2|$, then $|G_2|\lesssim \exp\left(-(\log \mathrm{dist} (G_1,G_2))^A\right)$, $A\gg 1$. Moreover, the same estimates hold for the gaps in the spectrum on a finite interval, that is, for $\mathcal S_{N,ω}:=\cup_{x\in\mathbb T}\mathrm{spec} H_{[-N,N]}(x,ω) $, $N \ge 1 $, where $H_{[-N, N]}(x, ω)$ is the Schrödinger operator restricted to the interval $[-N,N]$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In particular, all these results hold for the almost Mathieu operator with $|λ| \neq 1$. For the supercritical almost Mathieu operator, we combine the methods of [GolSch08] with Jitomirskaya's approach from [Jit99] to establish most of the results from [GolSch08] with $ω$ obeying a strong Diophantine condition.
