McKean-Vlasov SDEs in nonlinear filtering

Various particle filters have been proposed over the last couple of decades with the common feature that the update step is governed by a type of control law. This feature makes them an attractive alternative to traditional sequential Monte Carlo which scales poorly with the state dimension due to weight degeneracy. This article proposes a unifying framework that allows to systematically derive the McKean-Vlasov representations of these filters for the discrete time and continuous time observation case, taking inspiration from the smooth approximation of the data considered in Crisan & Xiong (2010) and Clark & Crisan (2005). We consider three filters that have been proposed in the literature and use this framework to derive Itô representations of their limiting forms as the approximation parameter $δ\rightarrow 0$. All filters require the solution of a Poisson equation defined on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, for which existence and uniqueness of solutions can be a non-trivial issue. We additionally establish conditions on the signal-observation system that ensures well-posedness of the weighted Poisson equation arising in one of the filters.

Analysis of the feedback particle filter with diffusion map based approximation of the gain

Control-type particle filters have been receiving increasing attention over the last decade as a means of obtaining sample based approximations to the sequential Bayesian filtering problem in the nonlinear setting. Here we analyse one such type, namely the feedback particle filter and a recently proposed approximation of the associated gain function based on diffusion maps. The key purpose is to provide analytic insights on the form of the approximate gain, which are of interest in their own right. These are then used to establish a roadmap to obtaining well-posedness and convergence of the finite $N$ system to its mean field limit. A number of possible future research directions are also discussed.

Peng's Maximum Principle for Stochastic Partial Differential Equations

We extend Peng's maximum principle for semilinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) in one space-dimension with non-convex control domains and control-dependent diffusion coefficients to the case of general cost functionals with Nemytskii-type coefficients. Our analysis is based on a new approach to the characterization of the second order adjoint state as the solution of a function-valued backward SPDE.

Fluctuation limits for mean-field interacting nonlinear Hawkes processes

We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of networks of interacting non-linear Hawkes processes modeling a homogeneous population of neurons in the large population limit. In particular, we prove a functional central limit theorem for the mean spike-activity thereby characterizing the asymptotic fluctuations in terms of a stochastic Volterra integral equation. Our approach differs from previous approaches in making use of the associated resolvent in order to represent the fluctutations as Skorokhod continuous mappings of weakly converging martingales. Since the Lipschitz properties of the resolvent are explicit, our analysis in principle also allows to derive approximation errors in terms of driving martingales.

Diffusivity Estimation for Activator-Inhibitor Models: Theory and Application to Intracellular Dynamics of the Actin Cytoskeleton

A theory for diffusivity estimation for spatially extended activator-inhibitor dynamics modelling the evolution of intracellular signaling networks is developed in the mathematical framework of stochastic reaction-diffusion systems. In order to account for model uncertainties, we extend the results for parameter estimation for semilinear stochastic partial differential equations, as developed in [PS20], to the problem of joint estimation of diffusivity and parametrized reaction terms. Our theoretical findings are applied to the estimation of effective diffusivity of signaling components contributing to intracellular dynamics of the actin cytoskeleton in the model organism Dictyostelium discoideum.

On the continuous time limit of Ensemble Square Root Filters

We provide a continuous time limit analysis for the class of Ensemble Square Root Filter algorithms with deterministic model perturbations. In the particular linear case, we specify general conditions on the model perturbations implying convergence of the empirical mean and covariance matrix towards their respective counterparts of the Kalman-Bucy Filter. As a second main result we identify additional assumptions for the convergence of the whole ensemble towards solutions of the Ensemble Kalman-Bucy filtering equations introduced in [1]. The latter result can be generalized to nonlinear Lipschitz-continuous model operators. A striking implication of our results is the fact that the limiting equations for the ensemble members are universal for a large class of Ensemble Square Root Filters. This yields a mathematically rigorous justification for the analysis of these algorithms with the help of the Ensemble Kalman-Bucy Filter. Mean field limit of Ensemble Square Root Filters -- discrete and continuous time

Consider the class of Ensemble Square Root filtering algorithms for the numerical approximation of the posterior distribution of nonlinear Markovian signals partially observed with linear observations corrupted with independent measurement noise. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of these algorithms in the large ensemble limit both in discrete and continuous time. We identify limiting mean-field processes on the level of the ensemble members, prove corresponding propagation of chaos results and derive associated convergence rates in terms of the ensemble size. In continuous time we also identify the stochastic partial differential equation driving the distribution of the mean-field process and perform a comparison with the Kushner-Stratonovich equation.

Deterministic Control of Stochastic Reaction-Diffusion Equations

We consider the control of semilinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) via deterministic controls. In the case of multiplicative noise, existence of optimal controls and necessary conditions for optimality are derived. In the case of additive noise, we obtain a representation for the gradient of the cost functional via adjoint calculus. The restriction to deterministic controls and additive noise avoids the necessity of introducing a backward SPDE. Based on this novel representation, we present a probabilistic nonlinear conjugate gradient descent method to approximate the optimal control, and apply our results to the stochastic Schlögl model. We also present some analysis in the case where the optimal control for the stochastic system differs from the optimal control for the deterministic system.

Drift Estimation for Stochastic Reaction-Diffusion Systems

A parameter estimation problem for a class of semilinear stochastic evolution equations is considered. Conditions for consistency and asymptotic normality are given in terms of growth and continuity properties of the nonlinear part. Emphasis is put on the case of stochastic reaction-diffusion systems. Robustness results for statistical inference under model uncertainty are provided.

Weak Solutions to Vlasov-McKean Equations under Lyapunov-Type Conditions

We present a Lyapunov type approach to the problem of existence and uniqueness of general law-dependent stochastic differential equations. In the existing literature most results concerning existence and uniqueness are obtained under regularity assumptions of the coefficients w.r.t the Wasserstein distance. Some existence and uniqueness results for irregular coefficients have been obtained by considering the total variation distance. Here we extend this approach to the control of the solution in some weighted total variation distance, that allows us now to derive a rather general weak uniqueness result, merely assuming measurability and certain integrability on the drift coefficient and some non-degeneracy on the dispersion coefficient. We also present an abstract weak existence result for the solution of law-dependent stochastic differential equations with merely measurable coefficients, based on an approximation with law-dependent stochastic differential equations with regular coefficients under Lyapunov type assumptions.

Propagation of Chaos for Stochastic Spatially Structured Neuronal Networks with Delay driven by Jump Diffusions

Spatially structured neural networks driven by jump diffusion noise with monotone coefficients, fully path dependent delay and with a disorder parameter are considered. Well-posedness for the associated McKean-Vlasov equation and a corresponding propagation of chaos result in the infinite population limit are proven. Our existence result for the McKean-Vlasov equation is based on the Euler approximation, that is applied to this type of equation for the first time.

A Fenchel-Moreau-Rockafellar type theorem on the Kantorovich-Wasserstein space with Applications in Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes

By using the fact that the space of all probability measures with finite support can be somehow completed in two different fashions, one generating the Arens-Eells space and another generating the Kantorovich-Wasserstein (Wasserstein-1) space, and by exploiting the duality relationship between the Arens-Eells space with the space of Lipschitz functions, we provide a dual representation of Fenchel-Moreau-Rockafellar type for proper convex functionals on Wasserstein-1. We retrieve dual transportation inequalities as a Corollary and we provide examples where the theorem can be used to easily prove dual expressions like the celebrated Donsker-Varadhan variational formula. Finally our result allows to write convex functions as the supremum over all linear functions that are generated by roots of its conjugate dual, something that we apply to the field of Partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) to approximate the value function of a given POMDP by iterating level sets. This extends the method used in Smallwood 1973 for finite state spaces to the case were the state space is a Polish metric space.

On the continuous time limit of the Ensemble Kalman Filter

We present recent results on the existence of a continuous time limit for Ensemble Kalman Filter algorithms. In the setting of continuous signal and observation processes, we apply the original Ensemble Kalman Filter algorithm proposed by [1] as well as a recent variant [2] to the respective discretizations and show that in the limit of decreasing stepsize the filter equations converge to an ensemble of interacting (stochastic) differential equations in the ensemble-mean-square sense. Our analysis also allows for the derivation of convergence rates with respect to the stepsize. An application of our analysis is the rigorous derivation of continuous ensemble filtering algorithms consistent with discrete approximation schemes. Conversely, the continuous time limit allows for a better qualitative and quantitative analysis of the time-discrete counterparts using the rich theory of dynamical systems in continuous time. Existence, uniqueness and stability of semi-linear rough partial differential equations

We prove well-posedness and rough path stability of a class of linear and semi-linear rough PDE's on $\mathbb{R}^d$ using the variational approach. This includes well-posedness of (possibly degenerate) linear rough PDE's in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$, and then -- based on a new method -- energy estimates for non-degenerate linear rough PDE's. We accomplish this by controlling the energy in a properly chosen weighted $L^2$-space, where the weight is given as a solution of an associated backward equation. These estimates then allow us to extend well-posedness for linear rough PDE's to semi-linear perturbations.

Generalized Burgers equation with rough transport noise

We introduce a new technique for studying well posedness and energy estimates for evolution equations with a rough transport term. The technique is based on finding suitable space-time weight functions for the equations at hand. As an example we study the well posedness of the generalized viscous Burgers equation perturbed by a rough path transport noise.

Long-time stability and accuracy of the ensemble Kalman-Bucy filter for fully observed processes and small measurement noise

The ensemble Kalman filter has become a popular data assimilation technique in the geosciences. However, little is known theoretically about its long term stability and accuracy. In this paper, we investigate the behavior of an ensemble Kalman-Bucy filter applied to continuous-time filtering problems. We derive mean field limiting equations as the ensemble size goes to infinity as well as uniform-in-time accuracy and stability results for finite ensemble sizes. The later results require that the process is fully observed and that the measurement noise is small. We also demonstrate that our ensemble Kalman-Bucy filter is consistent with the classic Kalman-Bucy filter for linear systems and Gaussian processes. We finally verify our theoretical findings for the Lorenz-63 system.

A complete mean-field theory for dynamics of binary recurrent neural networks

We develop a unified theory that encompasses the macroscopic dynamics of recurrent interactions of binary units within arbitrary network architectures. Using the martingale theory, our mathematical analysis provides a complete description of nonequilibrium fluctuations in networks with finite size and finite degree of interactions. Our approach allows the investigation of systems for which a deterministic mean-field theory breaks down. To demonstrate this, we uncover a novel dynamic state in which a recurrent network of binary units with statistically inhomogeneous interactions, along with an asynchronous behavior, also exhibits collective nontrivial stochastic fluctuations in the thermodynamical limit.

A Multiscale-Analysis of Stochastic Bistable Reaction-Diffusion Equations

A multiscale analysis of 1D stochastic bistable reaction-diffusion equations with additive noise is carried out w.r.t. travelling waves within the variational approach to stochastic partial differential equations. It is shown with explicit error estimates on appropriate function spaces that up to lower order w.r.t. the noise amplitude, the solution can be decomposed into the orthogonal sum of a travelling wave moving with random speed and into Gaussian fluctuations. A stochastic differential equation describing the speed of the travelling wave and a linear stochastic partial differential equation describing the fluctuations are derived in terms of the coefficients. Our results extend corresponding results obtained for stochastic neural field equations to the present class of stochastic dynamics.
