A C*-diagonal in the Jiang-Su algebra via entangled matrix cones

We construct the Jiang-Su algebra Z as an inductive limit of dimension drop algebras, describing the latter as entangled matrix cones to explicitly define the connecting *-homomorphisms. This construction gives rise to a C*-diagonal in Z with one-dimensional spectrum which is not locally connected. Along the way, we give a new characterisation of normalisers in Cartan pairs in terms of state excision.

Paper-folding models for the CAR algebra

We show that the CAR algebra admits a Cantor spectrum C*-diagonal that is not conjugate to the standard AF diagonal. We obtain this by classification theory of C*-algebras, and the diagonal arises by realising the CAR algebra as the crossed product of a free minimal action on the Cantor space, where the acting group is the product of a locally finite group with the infinite dihedral group. The main ingredient in the construction is a binary subshift associated to the well-known regular paper-folding sequence. Moreover, we show that the CAR algebra in fact admits countably many, pairwise non-conjugate, Cantor spectrum diagonals which are distinguished by the different values of their diagonal dimension, as defined by Li, Liao and the second named author.

Diagonal comparison of ample C*-diagonals

We introduce diagonal comparison, a regularity property of diagonal pairs where the sub-C*-algebra has totally disconnected spectrum, and establish its equivalence with the concurrence of strict comparison of the ambient C*-algebra and dynamical comparison of the underlying dynamics induced by the partial action of the normalisers. As an application, we show that for diagonal pairs arising from principal minimal transformation groupoids with totally disconnected unit space, diagonal comparison is equivalent to tracial Z-stability of the pair and that it is implied by finite diagonal dimension. In-between, we show that any projection of the diagonal sub-C*-algebra can be uniformly tracially divided, and explore a property of conditional expectations onto abelian sub-C*-algebras, namely containment of every positive element in the hereditary subalgebra generated by its conditional expectation. We show that the expectation associated to a C*-pair with finite diagonal dimension is always hereditary in that sense, and we give an example where this property does not occur.

Images of Order Zero Maps

We give sufficient conditions allowing one to build a C*-algebraic structure on a self-adjoint linear subspace of a C*-algebra in such a way that the subspace is naturally identified with the resulting C*-algebra via a completely positive order zero map. This leads to necessary and sufficient conditions to realize a self-adjoint linear subspace of a C*-algebra as the image of an order zero map from a C*-algebra and to determine whether it is completely order isomorphic to a C*-algebra via an order zero map.

Nuclearity and CPC*-systems

We write arbitrary separable nuclear C*-algebras as limits of inductive systems of finite-dimensional C*-algebras with completely positive connecting maps. The characteristic feature of such CPC*-systems is that the maps become more and more orthogonality preserving. This condition makes it possible to equip the limit, a priori only an operator space, with a multiplication turning it into a C*-algebra. Our concept generalizes the NF systems of Blackadar and Kirchberg beyond the quasidiagonal case.

The diagonal dimension of sub-C*-algebras

We introduce diagonal dimension, a version of nuclear dimension for diagonal sub-C*-algebras (sometimes also referred to as diagonal C*-pairs). Our concept has good permanence properties and detects more refined information than nuclear dimension. In many situations it is precisely how dynamical information is encoded in an associated C*-pair. For free actions on compact Hausdorff spaces, diagonal dimension of the crossed product with its canonical diagonal is bounded above by a product involving Kerr's tower dimension of the action and covering dimension of the space. It is bounded below by the dimension of the space, by the asymptotic dimension of the group, and by the fine tower dimension of the action. For a locally compact, Hausdorff, \'etale groupoid, diagonal dimension of the groupoid C*-algebra is bounded below by the dynamic asymptotic dimension of the groupoid. For free Cantor dynamical systems, diagonal dimension (defined at the level of the crossed product C*-algebra) and tower dimension (an entirely dynamical notion) agree on the nose. Similarly, for a finitely generated group diagonal dimension of its uniform Roe algebra with the canonical diagonal agrees precisely with asymptotic dimension of the group. This statement also holds for uniformly bounded metric spaces. We apply the lower bounds above to a number of further examples which show how diagonal dimension keeps track of information not seen by nuclear dimension.

Stability and Sensitivity Analysis of Multi-Vendor, Multi-Terminal HVDC Systems

The stability of multi-vendor, multi-terminal HVDC systems can be analyzed in frequency domain by black-box impedance models using the generalized Nyquist stability criterion. Based on the impedance stability analysis, a multi-level sensitivity analysis approach using frequency-domain sensitivity functions is proposed to identify the root cause of potential instability. Case studies on a four-terminal HVDC system are carried out for stability and sensitivity analysis based on the impedance measurement in PSCAD. The analysis results are finally validated by electromagnetic transient simulations.

Nuclear dimension of simple C*-algebras

We compute the nuclear dimension of separable, simple, unital, nuclear, Z-stable C*-algebras. This makes classification accessible from Z-stability and in particular brings large classes of C*-algebras associated to free and minimal actions of amenable groups on finite dimensional spaces within the scope of the Elliott classification programme.

The Toeplitz algebra has nuclear dimension one

We prove the title by constructing 2-colourable completely positive approximations for the Toeplitz algebra. Besides results about nuclear dimension and completely positive contractive order zero maps, our argument involves projectivity of the cone over a finite dimensional C*-algebra and Lin's theorem on almost normal matrices.

Rokhlin dimension for flows

We introduce a notion of Rokhlin dimension for one parameter automorphism groups of C*-algebras. This generalizes Kishimoto's Rokhlin property for flows, and is analogous to the notion of Rokhlin dimension for actions of the integers and other discrete groups introduced by the authors and Zacharias in previous papers. We show that finite nuclear dimension and absorption of a strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra are preserved under forming crossed products by flows with finite Rokhlin dimension, and that these crossed products are stable. Furthermore, we show that a flow on a commutative C*-algebra arising from a free topological flow has finite Rokhlin dimension, whenever the spectrum is a locally compact metrizable space with finite covering dimension. For flows that are both free and minimal, this has strong consequences for the associated crossed product C*-algebras: Those containing a non-zero projection are classified by the Elliott invariant (for compact manifolds this consists of topological K-theory together with the space of invariant probability measures and a natural pairing given by the Ruelle-Sullivan map).

Quasidiagonality of nuclear C*-algebras

We prove that faithful traces on separable and nuclear C*-algebras in the UCT class are quasidiagonal. This has a number of consequences. Firstly, by results of many hands, the classification of unital, separable, simple and nuclear C*-algebras of finite nuclear dimension which satisfy the UCT is now complete. Secondly, our result links the finite to the general version of the Toms-Winter conjecture in the expected way and hence clarifies the relation between decomposition rank and nuclear dimension. Finally, we confirm the Rosenberg conjecture: discrete, amenable groups have quasidiagonal C*-algebras.

Covering dimension of C*-algebras and 2-coloured classification

We introduce the concept of finitely coloured equivalence for unital *-homomorphisms between C*-algebras, for which unitary equivalence is the 1-coloured case. We use this notion to classify *-homomorphisms from separable, unital, nuclear C*-algebras into ultrapowers of simple, unital, nuclear, Z-stable C*-algebras with compact extremal trace space up to 2-coloured equivalence by their behaviour on traces; this is based on a 1-coloured classification theorem for certain order zero maps, also in terms of tracial data. As an application we calculate the nuclear dimension of non-AF, simple, separable, unital, nuclear, Z-stable C*-algebras with compact extremal trace space: it is 1. In the case that the extremal trace space also has finite topological covering dimension, this confirms the remaining open implication of the Toms-Winter conjecture. Inspired by homotopy-rigidity theorems in geometry and topology, we derive a "homotopy equivalence implies isomorphism" result for large classes of C*-algebras with finite nuclear dimension.

QDQ vs. UCT

This is a survey of recent progress in the structure and classification theory of nuclear C*-algebras. In particular, I outline how the Universal Coefficient Theorem ensures a positive answer to the quasidiagonality question in the presence of faithful traces. This has strong consequences for the regularity conjecture and the classification problem for separable, simple, nuclear C*-algebras. Moreover, it entails a positive solution to Rosenberg's conjecture on quasidiagonality of reduced C*-algebras of discrete amenable groups. This note is largely based on a joint paper with Aaron Tikuisis and Stuart White.

The Rokhlin property vs. Rokhlin dimension 1 on unital Kirchberg algebras

We investigate symmetries on unital Kirchberg algebras with respect to the Rokhlin property and finite Rokhlin dimension. In stark contrast to the restrictiveness of the Rokhlin property, every such outer action has Rokhlin dimension at most 1. A consequence of these observations is a relationship between the nuclear dimension of an $\mathcal{O}_\infty$-absorbing C*-algebra and its $\mathcal{O}_2$-stabilization. A more direct and alternative approach to this is given as well. Several applications of this relationship are discussed to cover a fairly large class of $\mathcal{O}_\infty$-absorbing C*-algebras that turn out to have finite nuclear dimension.

Classifying crossed product C*-algebras

I combine recent results in the structure theory of nuclear C*-algebras and in topological dynamics to classify certain types of crossed products in terms of their Elliott invariants. In particular, transformation group C*-algebras associated to free minimal Z^d-actions on the Cantor set with compact space of ergodic measures are classified by their ordered K-theory. In fact, the respective statement holds for finite dimensional compact metrizable spaces, provided that projections of the crossed products separate tracial states. Moreover, C*-algebras associated to certain minimal homeomorphisms of odd dimensional spheres are only determined by their spaces of invariant Borel probability measures (without a condition on the space of ergodic measures). Finally, I show that for a large collection of classifiable C*-algebras, crossed products by Z^d-actions are generically again classifiable.

Nuclear dimension and Z-stability

Simple, separable, unital, monotracial and nuclear C$^*$-algebras are shown to have finite nuclear dimension whenever they absorb the Jiang-Su algebra $\mathcal{Z}$ tensorially. This completes the proof of the Toms-Winter conjecture in the unique trace case.
