Completely positive maps of order zero

We say a completely positive contractive map between two C*-algebras has order zero, if it sends orthogonal elements to orthogonal elements. We prove a structure theorem for such maps. As a consequence, order zero maps are in one-to-one correspondence with *-homomorphisms from the cone over the domain into the target algebra. Moreover, we conclude that tensor products of order zero maps are again order zero, that the composition of an order zero map with a tracial functional is again a tracial functional, and that order zero maps respect the Cuntz relation, hence induce ordered semigroup morphisms between Cuntz semigroups.

The Jiang-Su algebra revisited

We give a number of new characterizations of the Jiang-Su algebra Z, both intrinsic and extrinsic, in terms of C*-algebraic, dynamical, topological and K-theoretic conditions. Along the way we study divisibility properties of C*-algebras, we give a precise characterization of those unital C*-algebras of stable rank one that admit a unital embedding of the dimension-drop C*-algebra Z_{n,n+1}, and we prove a cancellation theorem for the Cuntz semigroup of C*-algebras of stable rank one.

Localizing the Elliott conjecture at strongly self-absorbing C*-algebras

We formally introduce the concept of localizing the Elliott conjecture at a given strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra $D$; we also explain how the known classification theorems for nuclear C*-algebras fit into this concept. As a new result in this direction, we employ recent results of Lin to show that (under a mild K-theoretic condition) the class of separable, unital, simple C*-algebras with locally finite decomposition rank and UCT, and for which projections separate traces, satisfies the Elliott conjecture localized at the Jiang-Su algebra Z. Our main result is formulated in a more general way; this allows us to outline a strategy to possibly remove the trace space condition as well as the K-theory restriction entirely. When regarding both our result and the recent classification theorem of Elliott, Gong and Li as generalizations of the real rank zero case, the two approaches are perpendicular in a certain sense. The strategy to attack the general case aims at combining these two approaches. Our classification theorem covers simple ASH algebras for which projections separate traces (and the K-groups of which have finitely generated torsion part); it does, however, not at all depend on an inductive limit structure. Also, in the monotracial case it does not rely on the existence or absence of projections in any way. In fact, it is the first such result which, in a natural way, covers all known unital, separable, simple, nuclear and stably finite C*-algebras of real rank zero (the K-groups of which have finitely generated torsion part) as well as the (projectionless) Jiang-Su algebra itself.

Commutative C*-subalgebras of simple stably finite C*-algebras with real rank zero

Let X be a path connected, compact metric space and let A be a unital separable simple nuclear Z-stable real rank zero C*-algebra. We classify all the unital *-embeddings (up to approximate unitary equivalence) of C(X) into A. Specifically, we provide an existence and a uniqueness theorem for unital *-embeddings from C(X) into A.

Permutations of Strongly Self-Absorbing C*-algebras

Let G be a finite group acting on {1,...,n}. For any C*-algebra A, this defines an action of αof G on A^{\otimes n}. We show that if A tensorially absorbs a UHF algebra of infinite type, the Jiang-Su algebra, or is approximately divisible, then A \times_α G has the corresponding property as well.

Trivialization of C(X)-algebras with strongly self-absorbing fibres

Suppose $A$ is a separable unital $C(X)$-algebra each fibre of which is isomorphic to the same strongly self-absorbing and $K_{1}$-injective $C^{*}$-algebra $D$. We show that $A$ and $C(X) \otimes D$ are isomorphic as $C(X)$-algebras provided the compact Hausdorff space $X$ is finite-dimensional. This statement is known not to extend to the infinite-dimensional case.

On the KK-theory of strongly self-absorbing C*-algebras

Let $\Dh$ and $A$ be unital and separable $C^{*}$-algebras; let $\Dh$ be strongly self-absorbing. It is known that any two unital $^*$-homomorphisms from $\Dh$ to $A \otimes \Dh$ are approximately unitarily equivalent. We show that, if $\Dh$ is also $K_{1}$-injective, they are even asymptotically unitarily equivalent. This in particular implies that any unital endomorphism of $\Dh$ is asymptotically inner. Moreover, the space of automorphisms of $\Dh$ is compactly-contractible (in the point-norm topology) in the sense that for any compact Hausdorff space $X$, the set of homotopy classes $[X,\Aut(\Dh)]$ reduces to a point. The respective statement holds for the space of unital endomorphisms of $\Dh$. As an application, we give a description of the Kasparov group $KK(\Dh, A\ot \Dh)$ in terms of $^*$-homomorphisms and asymptotic unitary equivalence. Along the way, we show that the Kasparov group $KK(\Dh, A\ot \Dh)$ is isomorphic to $K_0(A\ot \Dh)$.

The Elliott conjecture for Villadsen algebras of the first type

We study the class of simple C*-algebras introduced by Villadsen in his pioneering work on perforated ordered K-theory. We establish six equivalent characterisations of the proper subclass which satisfies the strong form of Elliott's classification conjecture: two C*-algebraic (Z-stability and approximate divisibility), one K-theoretic (strict comparison of positive elements), and three topological (finite decomposition rank, slow dimension growth, and bounded dimension growth). The equivalence of Z-stability and strict comparison constitutes a stably finite version of Kirchberg's characterisation of purely infinite C*-algebras. The other equivalences confirm, for Villadsen's algebras, heretofore conjectural relationships between various notions of good behaviour for nuclear C*-algebras.

C_0(X)-algebras, stability and strongly self-absorbing C*-algebras

We study permanence properties of the classes of stable and so-called D-stable C*-algebras, respectively. More precisely, we show that a C_0(X)-algebra A is stable if all its fibres are, provided that the underlying compact metrizable space X has finite covering dimension or that the Cuntz semigroup of A is almost unperforated (a condition which is automatically satisfied for C*-algebras absorbing the Jiang--Su algebra Z tensorially). Furthermore, we prove that if D is a K_1-injective strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra, then A absorbs D tensorially if and only if all its fibres do, again provided that X is finite-dimensional. This latter statement generalizes results of Blanchard and Kirchberg. We also show that the condition on the dimension of X cannot be dropped. Along the way, we obtain a useful characterization of when a C*-algebra with weakly unperforated Cuntz semigroup is stable, which allows us to show that stability passes to extensions of Z-absorbing C*-algebras.

Simple C*-algebras with locally finite decomposition rank

We introduce the notion of locally finite decomposition rank, a structural property shared by many stably finite nuclear C*-algebras. The concept is particularly relevant for Elliott's program to classify nuclear C*-algebras by K-theory data. We study some of its properties and show that a simple unital C*-algebra, which has locally finite decomposition rank, real rank zero and which absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra Z tensorially, has tracial rank zero in the sense of Lin. As a consequence, any such C*-algebra, if it additionally satisfies the Universal Coefficients Theorem, is approximately homogeneous of topological dimension at most 3. Our result in particular confirms the Elliott conjecture for the class of simple unital Z-stable ASH algebras with real rank zero. Moreover, it implies that simple unital Z-stable AH algebras with real rank zero not only have slow dimension growth in the ASH sense, but even in the AH sense.

On the classification of simple Z-stable C*-algebras with real rank zero and finite decomposition rank

We show that, if A is a separable simple unital C*-algebra which absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra Z tensorially and which has real rank zero and finite decomposition rank, then A is tracially AF in the sense of Lin, without any restriction on the tracial state space. As a consequence, the Elliott conjecture is true for the class of C*-algebras as above which, additionally, satisfy the Universal Coefficients Theorem. In particular, such algebras are completely determined by their ordered K-theory. They are approximately homogeneous of topological dimension less than or equal to 3, approximately subhomogeneous of topological dimension at most 2 and their decomposition rank also is no greater than 2.

A Note On Subhomogeneous C*-Algebras

We show that finitely generated subhomogeneous C*-algebras have finite decomposition rank. As a consequence, any separable ASH C*-algebra can be written as an inductive limit of subhomogeneous C*-algebras each of which has finite decomposition rank. It then follows from work of H. Lin and of the second named author that the class of simple unital ASH algebras which have real rank zero and absorb the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially satisfies the Elliott conjecture.

Rokhlin actions and self-absorbing C*-algebras

Let A be a unital separable C*-algebra, and D a K_1-injective strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra. We show that if A is D-absorbing, then the crossed product of A by a compact second countable group or by Z or by R is D-absorbing as well, assuming the action satisfying a Rokhlin property. In the case of a compact Rokhlin action we prove a similar statement about approximate divisibility.

Strongly self-absorbing C*-algebras

Say that a separable, unital C*-algebra D is strongly self-absorbing if there exists an isomorphism $ϕ: D \to D \otimes D$ such that $ϕ$ and $id_D \otimes 1_D$ are approximately unitarily equivalent $*$-homomorphisms. We study this class of algebras, which includes the Cuntz algebras $\mathcal{O}_2$, $\mathcal{O}_{\infty}$, the UHF algebras of infinite type, the Jiang--Su algebra Z and tensor products of $\Oh_{\infty}$ with UHF algebras of infinite type. Given a strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra D we characterise when a separable C*-algebra absorbs D tensorially (i.e., is D-stable), and prove closure properties for the class of separable D-stable C*-algebras. Finally, we compute the possible K-groups and prove a number of classification results which suggest that the examples listed above are the only strongly self-absorbing C*-algebras.

Z-stable ASH algebras

The Jiang--Su algebra Z has come to prominence in the classification program for nuclear C*-algebras of late, due primarily to the fact that Elliott's classification conjecture predicts that all simple, separable, and nuclear C*-algebras with unperforated K-theory will absorb Z tensorially (i.e., will be Z-stable). There exist counterexamples which suggest that the conjecture will only hold for simple, nuclear, separable and Z-stable C*-algebras. We prove that virtually all classes of nuclear C*-algebras for which the Elliott conjecture has been confirmed so far, consist of Z-stable C*-algebras. This result follows in large part from the following theorem, also proved herein: separable and approximately divisible C*-algebras are Z-stable.

On topologically finite-dimensional simple C*-algebras

We show that, if a simple $C^{*}$-algebra $A$ is topologically finite-dimensional in a suitable sense, then not only $K_{0}(A)$ has certain good properties, but $A$ is even accessible to Elliott's classification program. More precisely, we prove the following results: If $A$ is simple, separable and unital with finite decomposition rank and real rank zero, then $K_{0}(A)$ is weakly unperforated. If $A$ has finite decomposition rank, real rank zero and the space of extremal tracial states is compact and zero-dimensional, then $A$ has stable rank one and tracial rank zero. As a consequence, if $B$ is another such algebra, and if $A$ and $B$ have isomorphic Elliott invariants and satisfy the Universal coefficient theorem, then they are isomorphic. In the case where $A$ has finite decomposition rank and the space of extremal tracial states is compact and zero-dimensional, we also give a criterion (in terms of the ordered $K_{0}$-group) for $A$ to have real rank zero. As a byproduct, we show that there are examples of simple, stably finite and quasidiagonal $C^{*}$-algebras with infinite decomposition rank.

Decomposition rank of subhomogeneous $C^*$-algebras

We analyze the decomposition rank (a notion of covering dimension for nuclear $C^*$-algebras introduced by E. Kirchberg and the author) of subhomogeneous $C^*$-algebras. In particular we show that a subhomogeneous $C^*$-algebra has decomposition rank $n$ if and only if it is recursive subhomogeneous of topological dimension $n$ and that $n$ is determined by the primitive ideal space. As an application, we use recent results of Q. Lin and N. C. Phillips to show the following: Let $A$ be the crossed product $C^*$-algebra coming from a compact smooth manifold and a minimal diffeomorphism. Then the decomposition rank of $A$ is dominated by the covering dimension of the underlying manifold.
