Quiver braid group action for a 3-fold crepant resolution

The 3-fold cyclic quotient singularity denoted $\tfrac{1}{7}(1,2,4)$ admits a crepant resolution X with three exceptional Hirzebruch surfaces intersecting pairwise along curves. We show that the derived category D(X) carries a faithful action of a quiver braid group, where the relevant quiver is a 3-cycle encoding the intersection data.

Window categories for a simple $9$-fold flop of Grassmannian type

The local simple $9$-fold flop of Grassmannian type is a birational transformation between total spaces of vector bundles on the Grassmannians $\mathrm{Gr}(2, 5)$ and $\mathrm{Gr}(3, 5)$. We produce four different derived equivalences which commute with the pushforward functors for the flopping contractions. These equivalences are realized by identifying four different window categories inside the derived category of coherent sheaves on an Artin stack. As an application, our approach provides a new proof of derived equivalence for a pair of non-birational Calabi-Yau threefolds realized as zero loci of sections of homogeneous vector bundles in Grassmannians.

Root stacks and periodic decompositions

For an effective Cartier divisor D on a scheme X we may form an nth root stack. Its derived category is known to have a semiorthogonal decomposition with components given by D and X. We show that this decomposition is 2n-periodic. For n=2 this gives a purely triangulated proof of the existence of a known spherical functor, namely the pushforward along the embedding of D. For n>2 we find a higher spherical functor in the sense of recent work of Dyckerhoff, Kapranov and Schechtman. We use a realization of the root stack construction as a variation of GIT, which may be of independent interest.

Stringy Kähler Moduli for the Pfaffian-Grassmannian Correspondence

The Pfaffian-Grassmannian correspondence relates certain pairs of derived equivalent non-birational Calabi-Yau 3-folds. Given such a pair, I construct a set of derived equivalences corresponding to mutations of an exceptional collection on the relevant Grassmannian, and give a mirror symmetry interpretation, following a physical analysis of Eager, Hori, Knapp, and Romo.

Stringy K\"ahler moduli, mutation and monodromy

This paper gives the first description of derived monodromy on the stringy K\"ahler moduli space (SKMS) for a general irreducible flopping curve C in a 3-fold X with mild singularities. We do this by constructing two new infinite helices: the first consists of sheaves supported on C, and the second comprises vector bundles in a tubular neighbourhood. We prove that these helices determine the simples and projectives in iterated tilts of the category of perverse sheaves, and that all objects in the first helix induce a twist autoequivalence for X. We show that these new derived symmetries, along with established ones, induce the full monodromy on the SKMS. The helices have many further applications. We (1) prove representability of noncommutative deformations of all successive thickenings of a length l flopping curve, via tilting theory, (2) control the representing objects, characterise when they are not commutative, and their central quotients, and (3) give new and sharp theoretical lower bounds on Gopakumar-Vafa invariants for a curve of length l. When X is smooth and resolves an affine base, we furthermore (4) prove that the second helix classifies all tilting reflexive sheaves on X, and thus that (5) all noncommutative crepant resolutions arise from tilting bundles on X.

Noncommutative enhancements of contractions

Given a contraction of a variety X to a base Y, we enhance the locus in Y over which the contraction is not an isomorphism with a certain sheaf of noncommutative rings D, under mild assumptions which hold in the case of (1) crepant partial resolutions admitting a tilting bundle with trivial summand, and (2) all contractions with fibre dimension at most one. In all cases, this produces a global invariant. In the crepant setting, we then apply this to study derived autoequivalences of X. We work generally, dropping many of the usual restrictions, and so both extend and unify existing approaches. In full generality we construct a new endofunctor of the derived category of X by twisting over D, and then, under appropriate restrictions on singularities, give conditions for when it is an autoequivalence. We show that these conditions hold automatically when the non-isomorphism locus in Y has codimension 3 or more, which covers determinantal flops, and we also control the conditions when the non-isomorphism locus has codimension 2, which covers 3-fold divisor-to-curve contractions.

Contractions and deformations

Suppose that f is a projective birational morphism with at most one-dimensional fibres between d-dimensional varieties X and Y, satisfying ${\bf R}f_* \mathcal{O}_X = \mathcal{O}_Y$. Consider the locus L in Y over which f is not an isomorphism. Taking the scheme-theoretic fibre C over any closed point of L, we construct algebras $A_{fib}$ and $A_{con}$ which prorepresent the functors of commutative deformations of C, and noncommutative deformations of the reduced fibre, respectively. Our main theorem is that the algebras $A_{con}$ recover L, and in general the commutative deformations of neither C nor the reduced fibre can do this. As the d=3 special case, this proves the following contraction theorem: in a neighbourhood of the point, the morphism f contracts a curve without contracting a divisor if and only if the functor of noncommutative deformations of the reduced fibre is representable.

Noncommutative deformations and flops

We prove that the functor of noncommutative deformations of every flipping or flopping irreducible rational curve in a 3-fold is representable, and hence associate to every such curve a noncommutative deformation algebra. This new invariant extends and unifies known invariants for flopping curves in 3-folds, such as the width of Reid, and the bidegree of the normal bundle. It also applies in the settings of flips and singular schemes. We show that the noncommutative deformation algebra is finite dimensional, and give a new way of obtaining the commutative deformations of the curve, allowing us to make explicit calculations of these deformations for certain (-3,1)-curves. We then show how our new invariant also controls the homological algebra of flops. For any flopping curve in a projective 3-fold with only Gorenstein terminal singularities, we construct an autoequivalence of the derived category of the 3-fold by twisting around a universal family over the noncommutative deformation algebra, and prove that this autoequivalence is an inverse of Bridgeland's flop-flop functor. This demonstrates that it is strictly necessary to consider noncommutative deformations of curves in order to understand the derived autoequivalences of a 3-fold, and thus the Bridgeland stability manifold.

Contractions of 3-folds: deformations and invariants

This note discusses recent new approaches to studying flopping curves on 3-folds. In a joint paper, the author and Michael Wemyss introduced a 3-fold invariant, the contraction algebra, which may be associated to such curves. It characterises their geometric and homological properties in a unified manner, using the theory of noncommutative deformations. Toda has now clarified the enumerative significance of the contraction algebra for flopping curves, calculating its dimension in terms of Gopakumar-Vafa invariants. Before reviewing these results, and others, I give a brief introduction to the rich geometry of flopping curves on 3-folds, starting from the resolutions of Kleinian surface singularities. This is based on a talk given at VBAC 2014 in Berlin.

Twists and braids for general 3-fold flops

Given a quasi-projective 3-fold X with only Gorenstein terminal singularities, we prove that the flop functors beginning at X satisfy higher degree braid relations, with the combinatorics controlled by a real hyperplane arrangement H. This leads to a general theory, incorporating known special cases with degree 3 braid relations, in which we show that higher degree relations can occur even for two smooth rational curves meeting at a point. This theory yields an action of the fundamental group of the complexified complement of H on the derived category of X, for any such 3-fold that admits individually floppable curves. We also construct such an action in the more general case where individual curves may flop analytically, but not algebraically, and furthermore we lift the action to a form of affine pure braid group under the additional assumption that X is Q-factorial. Along the way, we produce two new types of derived autoequivalences. One uses commutative deformations of the scheme-theoretic fibre of a flopping contraction, and the other uses noncommutative deformations of the fibre with reduced scheme structure, generalising constructions of Toda and the authors which considered only the case when the flopping locus is irreducible. For type A flops of irreducible curves, we show that the two autoequivalences are related, but that in other cases they are very different, with the noncommutative twist being linked to birational geometry via the Bridgeland-Chen flop-flop functor.

The Pfaffian-Grassmannian equivalence revisited

We give a new proof of the 'Pfaffian-Grassmannian' derived equivalence between certain pairs of non-birational Calabi-Yau threefolds. Our proof follows the physical constructions of Hori and Tong, and we factor the equivalence into three steps by passing through some intermediate categories of (global) matrix factorizations. The first step is global Knoerrer periodicity, the second comes from a birational map between Landau-Ginzburg B-models, and for the third we develop some new techniques.

Mixed braid group actions from deformations of surface singularities

We consider a set of toric Calabi-Yau varieties which arise as deformations of the small resolutions of type A surface singularities. By careful analysis of the heuristics of B-brane transport in the associated GLSMs, we predict the existence of a mixed braid group action on the derived category of each variety, and then prove that this action does indeed exist. This generalizes the braid group action found by Seidel and Thomas for the undeformed resolutions. We also show that the actions for different deformations are related, in a way that is predicted by the physical heuristics.

Grassmannian twists, derived equivalences and brane transport

This note is based on a talk given at String-Math 2012 in Bonn, on a joint paper with Ed Segal. We exhibit derived equivalences corresponding to certain Grassmannian flops. The construction of these equivalences is inspired by work of Herbst-Hori-Page on brane transport for gauged linear sigma models: in particular, we define 'windows' corresponding to their grade restriction rules. We then show how composing our equivalences produces interesting autoequivalences, which we describe as twists and cotwists about certain spherical functors. Our proofs use natural long exact sequences of bundles on Grassmannians known as twisted Lascoux complexes, or staircase complexes. We give a compact description of these. We also touch on some related developments, and work through some extended examples.

Window shifts, flop equivalences and Grassmannian twists

We introduce a new class of autoequivalences that act on the derived categories of certain vector bundles over Grassmannians. These autoequivalences arise from Grassmannian flops: they generalize Seidel-Thomas spherical twists, which can be seen as arising from standard flops. We first give a simple algebraic construction, which is well-suited to explicit computations. We then give a geometric construction using spherical functors which we prove is equivalent.

Grassmannian twists on the derived category via spherical functors

We construct new examples of derived autoequivalences for a family of higher-dimensional Calabi-Yau varieties. Specifically, we take the total spaces of certain natural vector bundles over Grassmannians G(r,d) of r-planes in a d-dimensional vector space, and define endofunctors of the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves associated to these varieties. In the case r=2 we show that these are autoequivalences using the theory of spherical functors. Our autoequivalences naturally generalize the Seidel-Thomas spherical twist for analogous bundles over projective spaces.
