An improved lattice measurement of the critical coupling in phi^4_2 theory

We use Monte Carlo simulations to obtain an improved lattice measurement of the critical coupling constant [lambda / mu^2]_crit for the continuum (1 + 1)-dimensional (lambda / 4) phi^4 theory. We find that the critical coupling constant depends logarithmically on the lattice coupling, resulting in a continuum value of [lambda / mu^2]_crit = 10.8(1), in considerable disagreement with the previously reported [lambda / mu^2]_crit = 10.26(8). Although this logarithmic behavior was not observed in earlier lattice studies, it is consistent with them, and expected analytically.

The NuTeV Anomaly, Lepton Universality, and Non-Universal Neutrino-Gauge Couplings

In previous studies we found that models with flavor-universal suppression of the neutrino-gauge couplings are compatible with NuTeV and Z-pole data. In this paper we expand our analysis to obtain constraints on flavor-dependent coupling suppression by including lepton universality data from W, tau, pi and K decays in fits to model parameters. We find that the data are consistent with a variety of patterns of coupling suppression. In particular, in scenarios in which the suppression arises from the mixing of light neutrinos with heavy gauge singlet states (neutrissimos), we find patterns of flavor-dependent coupling suppression which are also consistent with constraints from mu -> e gamma.

Multimode Interference: Identifying Channels and Ridges in Quantum Probability Distributions

The multimode interference technique is a simple way to study the interference patterns found in many quantum probability distributions. We demonstrate that this analysis not only explains the existence of so-called "quantum carpets," but can explain the spatial distribution of channels and ridges in the carpets. With an understanding of the factors that govern these channels and ridges we have a limited ability to produce a particular pattern of channels and ridges by carefully choosing the weighting coefficients c_{n} . We also use these results to demonstrate why fractional revivals of initial wavepackets are themselves composed of many smaller packets.

Quark-Lepton Unification and Lepton Flavor Non-Conservation from a TeV-scale Seesaw Neutrino Mass Texture

In a recent paper, we pointed out that mixing of the light neutrinos with heavy gauge singlet states could reconcile the Z-pole data from e+e- colliders and the nu_mu (anti-nu_mu) scattering data from the NuTeV experiment at Fermilab. We further noted that the mixing angle required to fit the data is much larger than what would be expected from the conventional seesaw mechanism. In this paper, we show how such mixings can be arranged by a judicious choice of the neutrino mass texture. We also argue that by invoking the unification of the Dirac mass matrix for the up-type quarks and the neutrinos, the mass of the heavy states can naturally be expected to be in the few TeV range. The model is strongly constrained by the lepton flavor changing process mu -> e gamma which requires lepton universality to be violated in the charged channel.

The W mass and the U parameter

The Z-pole data from e+e- colliders and results from the NuTeV experiment at Fermilab can be brought into agreement if (1) the neutrino-Z couplings were suppressed relative to the Standard Model (SM), and (2) the Higgs boson were much heavier than suggested by SM global fits. However, increasing the Higgs boson mass will move the theoretical value of the W mass away from its experimental value. A large and positive U parameter becomes necessary to account for the difference. We discuss what type of new physics may lead to such values of U.

The NuTeV Anomaly, Neutrino Mixing, and a Heavy Higgs Boson

Recent results from the NuTeV experiment at Fermilab and the deviation of the Z invisible width, measured at LEP/SLC, from its Standard Model (SM) prediction suggest the suppression of neutrino-Z couplings. Such suppressions occur naturally in models which mix the neutrinos with heavy gauge singlet states. We postulate a universal suppression of the Z-nu-nu couplings by a factor of (1-epsilon) and perform a fit to the Z-pole and NuTeV observables with epsilon and the oblique correction parameters S and T. Compared to a fit with S and T only, inclusion of epsilon leads to a dramatic improvement in the quality of the fit. The values of S and T preferred by the fit can be obtained within the SM by a simple increase in the Higgs boson mass. However, if the W mass is also included in the fit, a non-zero U parameter becomes necessary which cannot be supplied within the SM. The preferred value of epsilon suggests that the seesaw mechanism may not be the reason why neutrinos are so light.

Supersymmetry and Electroweak Leptonic Observables

We study vertex corrections to the leptonic electroweak observables in the general MSSM at tan(beta) < 35. In particular, we address the question of whether supersymmetry can be responsible for the observed 2 sigma deviation from the Standard Model prediction in the invisible width of the Z. We find that the presence of a light (around 100 GeV) chargino and sleptons hinted by the muon g-2 measurements makes the agreement with experiment slightly better and improves the electroweak fit.

Universal Torsion Induced Interaction from Large Extra Dimensions

We consider a model with extra compact dimensions in which only gravity exists in the 4+n dimensional bulk. If the gravitational connection is not assumed to be symmetric, that is, unless torsion is artificially set to zero, then a universal contact interaction among the fermions on the 4-dimensional wall is induced. Using a global fit to Z-pole observables, we find the 3 sigma bound on the scale of quantum gravity to be M_S = 28 TeV for n=2. If Dirac or light sterile neutrinos are present, the data from SN1987A increase the bound to \sqrt{n} M_S >= 210 TeV.

Constraints on Gauged B-3L_tau and Related Theories

We consider extensions of the Standard Model with an extra U(1) gauge boson which couples to B-(alpha L_e + beta L_mu + gamma L_tau) with alpha + beta + gamma = 3. We show that the extra gauge boson necessarily mixes with the Z leading to potentially significant corrections to the Z-f-fbar vertex. The constraints on the size of this correction imposed by the Z-pole data from LEP and SLD are derived.

Universal Torsion-Induced Interaction from Large Extra Dimensions

We consider the Kaluza-Klein (KK) scenario in which only gravity exists in the bulk. Without the assumption of symmetric connection, the presence of brane fermions induces torsion. The result is a universal axial contact interaction that dominates those induced by KK gravitons. This enhancement arises from a large spin density on the brane. Using a global fit to Z-pole observables, we find the 3 sigma bound on the scale of quantum gravity to be 28 TeV for n=2. If Dirac or light sterile neutrinos are present, the data from SN1987A increase the bound to \sqrt{n}M_S >= 210 TeV.

Critical dimensions of the diffusion equation

We study the evolution of a random initial field under pure diffusion in various space dimensions. From numerical calculations we find that the persistence properties of the system show sharp transitions at critical dimensions d1 ~ 26 and d2 ~ 46. We also give refined measurements of the persistence exponents for low dimensions.

Constraining New Physics with Vertex Corrections

We discuss how new physics not encompassed within the STU oblique correction framework can be constrained from precision electroweak measurements via vertex corrections to Z-pole observables.

Constraints on Two-Higgs Doublet Models at Large tan{beta} from W and Z decays

We study constraints on type-II two Higgs doublet models at large tan{beta} from LEP/SLD Z-pole data and from lepton universality violation in W decay. We perform a global fit and find that, in the context of Z decay, the LEP/SLD experimental values for lepton universality violation, R_b, and A_b all somewhat disfavor the model. Contributions from the neutral Higgs sector can be used to constrain the scalar-pseudoscalar Higgs mass splittings. Contributions from the charged Higgs sector allow us to constrain the charged Higgs mass. For tan{beta}=100 we obtain the 1 sigma classical (Bayesian) bounds of m_{H+} > 670 GeV (370 GeV) and 1 > m_{h0}/m_{A0} > 0.68 (0.64). The 2 sigma bounds are weak. Currently, the Tevatron experimental limits on lepton universality violation in W decay provide no significant constraint on the Higgs sector.

Constraints on R-parity violating couplings from LEP/SLD hadronic observables

We analyze the one loop corrections to hadronic Z decays in an R-parity violating extension to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). Performing a global fit to all the hadronic observables at the Z-peak, we obtain stringent constraints on the R-violating couplings constants lambda' and lambda''. As a result of the strong constraints from the b asymmetry parameters A_b and A_FB(b), we find that the couplings lambda'{i31}, lambda'{i32}, and lambda''{321} are ruled out at the 1 sigma level, and that lambda'{i33} and lambda''{33i} are ruled out at the 2 sigma level. We also obtain Bayesian confidence limits for the R-violating couplings.

Constraints on R-parity violating couplings from lepton universality

We analyze the one loop corrections to leptonic W and Z decays in an R-parity violating extension to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We find that lepton universality violation in the Z line-shape variables alone would strengthen the bounds on the magnitudes of the lambda' couplings, but a global fit on all data leaves the bounds virtually unchanged at |lambda'_{33k}| < 0.42 and |lambda'_{23k}| < 0.50 at the 2 sigma level. Bounds from W decays are less stringent: |lambda'_{33k}| < 2.4 at 2 sigma, as a consequence of the weaker Fermilab experimental bounds on lepton universality violation in W decays. We also point out the potential of constraining R-parity violating couplings from the measurement of the Upsilon invisible width.

Quantum revivals and carpets in some exactly solvable systems

We consider the revival properties of quantum systems with an eigenspectrum E_{n} proportional to n^{2}, and compare them with the simplest member of this class - the infinite square well. In addition to having perfect revivals at integer multiples of the revival time t_{R}, these systems all enjoy perfect fractional revivals at quarterly intervals of t_{R}. A closer examination of the quantum evolution is performed for the Poeschel-Teller and Rosen-Morse potentials, and comparison is made with the infinite square well using quantum carpets.
