Spectral geometry of the curl operator on smoothly bounded domains

We show that the spectrum of the curl operator on a generic smoothly bounded domain in three-dimensional Euclidean space consists of simple eigenvalues. The main new ingredient in our proof is a formula for the variation of curl eigenvalues under a perturbation of the domain, reminiscent of Hadamard's formula for the variation of Laplace eigenvalues under Dirichlet boundary conditions. As another application of this variational formula, we simplify the derivation of a well-known necessary condition for a domain to minimize the first curl eigenvalue functional among domains of a given volume and derive similar necessary conditions for a domain extremizing higher eigenvalue functionals.

Isolated steady solutions of the 3D Euler equations

We show that there exist closed three-dimensional Riemannian manifolds where the incompressible Euler equations exhibit smooth steady solutions that are isolated in the $C^1$-topology. The proof of this fact combines ideas from dynamical systems, which appear naturally because these isolated states have strongly chaotic dynamics, with techniques from spectral geometry and contact topology, which can be effectively used to analyze the steady Euler equations on carefully chosen Riemannian manifolds. Interestingly, much of this strategy carries over to the Euler equations in Euclidean space, leading to the weaker result that there exist analytic steady solutions on $\mathbf{T}^3$ such that the only analytic steady Euler flows in a $C^1$-neighborhood must belong to a certain linear space of dimension six. For comparison, note that in any $C^k$-neighborhood of a shear flow there are infinitely many linearly independent analytic shears.

On Arnold's Transversality Conjecture for the Laplace--Beltrami Operator

This paper is concerned with the structure of the set of Riemannian metrics on a connected manifold such that the corresponding Laplace--Beltrami operator has an eigenvalue of a given multiplicity. The starting point of our investigation is the "Strong Arnold Hypothesis" introduced by Colin de Verdi\`ere, which posits that Laplace eigenvalues of higher multiplicity split up under perturbation exactly as eigenvalues of symmetric matrices do. There exists a simple geometric characterization, due to Colin de Verdi\`ere and Besson, of metrics which satisfy the Strong Arnold Hypothesis. Using Besson's characterization, we prove the Strong Arnold Hypothesis is satisfied for all metrics except for a set of infinite codimension, and use this to obtain the precise codimension of the set of metrics admitting an eigenvalue of any given multiplicity. Furthermore, we show that the Strong Arnold Hypothesis is satisfied for all metrics admitting eigenvalues of multiplicity at most six, and discuss several examples of metrics violating it.

On spectral simplicity of the Hodge Laplacian and Curl Operator along paths of metrics

We prove that the curl operator on closed oriented $3$-manifolds, i.e., the square root of the Hodge Laplacian on its coexact spectrum, generically has $1$-dimensional eigenspaces, even along $1$-parameter families of $\mathcal{C}^k$ Riemannian metrics, where $k\geq 2$. We show further that the Hodge Laplacian in dimension $3$ has two possible sources for nonsimple eigenspaces along generic $1$-parameter families of Riemannian metrics: either eigenvalues coming from positive and from negative eigenvalues of the curl operator cross, or an exact and a coexact eigenvalue cross. We provide examples for both of these phenomena. In order to prove our results, we generalize a method of Teytel \cite{Teytel1999}, allowing us to compute the meagre codimension of the set of Riemannian metrics for which the curl operator and the Hodge Laplacian have certain eigenvalue multiplicities. A consequence of our results is that while the simplicity of the spectrum of the Hodge Laplacian in dimension $3$ is a meagre codimension $1$ property with respect to the $\mathcal{C}^k$ topology as proven by Enciso and Peralta-Salas in \cite{Enciso2012}, it is not a meagre codimension $2$ property.

An Algorithm taking Kirby diagrams to Trisection diagrams

We present an algorithm taking a Kirby diagram of a closed oriented $4$-manifold to a trisection diagram of the same manifold. This algorithm provides us with a large number of examples for trisection diagrams of closed oriented $4$-manifolds since many Kirby-diagrammatic descriptions of closed oriented $4$-manifolds are known. That being said, the algorithm does not necessarily provide particularly efficient trisection diagrams. We also extend this algorithm to work for the non-orientable case.
