Convex Functions and Geodesic Connectedness of Space-times

This paper explores the relation between convex functions and the geometry of space-times and semi-Riemannian manifolds (an investigation initiated by Gibbons-Ishibashi). Specifically, we study geodesic connectedness. We give geometric-topological proofs of geodesic connectedness for classes of space-times to which known methods do not apply. For instance: A null-disprisoning space-time is geodesically connected if it supports a proper, nonnegative strictly convex function whose critical set is a point. Timelike strictly convex hypersurfaces of Minkowski space are geodesically connected. We also give a criterion for the existence of a convex function on a semi-Riemannian manifold. We compare our work with previously known results.

Space-time convex functions and sectional curvature

We show that in Lorentzian manifolds, sectional curvature bounds of the form $\mathcal{R}\le K\,$, as defined by Andersson and Howard, are closely tied to space-time convex and $λ$-convex ($λ>0$) functions, as defined by Gibbons and Ishibashi. Among the consequences are a natural construction of such functions, and an analogue, that applies to domains of a new type, of a theorem of Alías, Bessa and deLira ruling out trapped submanifolds.

Level density and level-spacing distributions of random, self-adjoint, non-Hermitian matrices

We investigate the level-density $σ(x)$ and level-spacing distribution $p(s)$ of random matrices $M=AF\neq M^{\dagger}$ where $F$ is a (diagonal) inner-product and $A$ is a random, real symmetric or complex Hermitian matrix with independent entries drawn from a probability distribution $q(x)$ with zero mean and finite higher moments. Although not Hermitian, the matrix $M$ is self-adjoint with respect to $F$ and thus has purely real eigenvalues. We find that the level density $σ_F(x)$ is independent of the underlying distribution $q(x)$, is solely characterized by $F$, and therefore generalizes Wigner's semicircle distribution $σ_W(x)$. We find that the level-spacing distributions $p(s)$ are independent of $q(x)$, are dependent upon the inner-product $F$ and whether $A$ is real or complex, and therefore generalize the Wigner's surmise for level spacing. Our results suggest $F$-dependent generalizations of the well-known Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) and Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) classes.

Numerical approach to the Schrodinger equation in momentum space

The treatment of the time-independent Schrodinger equation in real-space is an indispensable part of introductory quantum mechanics. In contrast, the Schrodinger equation in momentum space is an integral equation that is not readily amenable to an analytical solution and is rarely taught. We present a numerical approach to the Schrodinger equation in momentum space. After a suitable discretization process, we obtain the Hamiltonian matrix and diagonalize it numerically. By considering a few examples, we show that this approach is ideal for exploring bound-states in a localized potential and complements the traditional (analytical or numerical) treatment of the Schrodinger equation in real-space.
