On two-dimensional Dirac operators with critical delta-shell interactions

We study two-dimensional Dirac operators with singular interactions of electrostatic and Lorentzscalar type, supported either on a straight line or a circle. For certain critical values of the interaction strengths, the essential spectrum of such operators comprises an isolated point lying within the mass gap. We clarify the nature of this point in both geometries. For the straight line model, this point is known to be an eigenvalue of infinite multiplicity, and we provide a detailed analysis of the corresponding eigenfunctions. By contrast, in the case of a circle, we show that the said point is not itself an eigenvalue, but rather an accumulation point of a double sequence of simple eigenvalues. In view of the high degree of symmetry of the configurations under analysis, this behavior is unexpected and our findings lead us to formulate some conjectures concerning critical singular interactions supported on generic smooth curves.

The Pauli-Villars-regularised Dirac field coupled to electromagnetic fields at thermal equilibrium

In this paper we consider a model for the Dirac field in a classical electromagnetic field at thermal equilibrium. We adopt the Pauli-Villars regularisation technique in order to properly define the free energy of the equilibrium state, extending the previous work by the second named author on the purely magnetic case. This work provides a first step towards understanding polarisation effects in the Dirac field at thermal equilibrium, in the presence of both electrostatic and magnetic potentials.

Dirac solitons in one-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations

In this paper we study a family of one-dimensional stationary cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger (NLS) equations with periodic potentials and linear part displaying Dirac points in the dispersion relation. By introducing a suitable periodic perturbation, one can open a spectral gap around the Dirac-point energy. This allows to construct standing waves of the NLS equation whose leading-order profile is a modulation of Bloch waves by means of the components of a spinor solving an appropriate cubic nonlinear Dirac (NLD) equation. We refer to these solutions as Dirac solitons. Our analysis thus provides a rigorous justification for the use of the NLD equation as an effective model for the original NLS equation.

Global well-posedness in a Hartree-Fock model for graphene

Graphene is a monolayer graphitic film in which electrons behave like two-dimensional Dirac fermions without mass. Its study has attracted a wide interest in the domain of condensed matter physics. In particular, it represents an ideal system to test the comprehension of 2D massless relativistic particles in a laboratory, the Fermi velocity being 300 times smaller than the speed of light. In this work, we present a global well-posedness result for graphene in the Hartree- Fock approximation. The model allows to describe the time evolution of graphene in the presence of external time-dependent electric potentials, such as those induced by local charge defects in the monolayer of carbon atoms. Our approach is based on a well established non-perturbative framework originating from the study of three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics.

Pauli Hamiltonians with an Aharonov-Bohm Flux

We study a two-dimensional Pauli operator describing a charged quantum particle with spin $1/2$ moving on a plane in presence of an orthogonal Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux. We classify all the admissible self-adjont realizations and give a complete picture of their spectral and scattering properties. Symmetries of the resulting Hamiltonians are also discussed, as well as their connection with the Dirac operator perturbed by an Aharonov-Bohm singularity.

On the nodal set of solutions to Dirac equations

Motivated by various geometric problems, we study the nodal set of solutions to Dirac equations on manifolds, of general form. We prove that such set has Hausdorff dimension less than or equal to $n-2$, $n$ being the ambient dimension. We extend this result, previously known only in the smooth case or in specific cases, working with locally Lipschitz coefficients. Under some additional, but still quite general, structural assumptions we provide a stratification result for the nodal set, which appears to be new already in the smooth case. This is achieved by exploiting the properties of a suitable Almgren-type frequency function, which is of independent interest.

Conformal Dirac-Einstein equations on manifolds with boundary

In this paper we study Dirac-Einstein equations on manifolds with boundary, restricted to a conformal class with constant boundary volume, under chiral bag boundary conditions for the Dirac operator. We characterize the bubbling phenomenon, also classifying ground state bubbles. Finally, we prove an Aubin-type inequality and a related existence result.

Spectral asymptotics for two-dimensional Dirac operators in thin waveguides

We consider the two-dimensional Dirac operator with infinite mass boundary conditions posed in a tubular neighborhood of a $C^4$-planar curve. Under generic assumptions on its curvature $κ$, we prove that in the thin-width regime the splitting of the eigenvalues is driven by the one dimensional Schrödinger operator on $L^2(\mathbb R)$ \[ \mathcal{L}_e := -\frac{d^2}{ds^2} - \frac{κ^2}{π^2} \] with a geometrically induced potential. The eigenvalues are shown to be at distance of order $\varepsilon$ from the essential spectrum, where $2\varepsilon$ is the width of the waveguide. This is in contrast with the non-relativistic counterpart of this model, for which they are known to be at a finite distance.

Complete ionization for a non-autonomous point interaction model in d = 2

We consider the two dimensional Schrödinger equation with time dependent delta potential, which represents a model for the dynamics of a quantum particle subject to a point interaction whose strength varies in time. First, we prove global well-posedness of the associated Cauchy problem under general assumptions on the potential and on the initial datum. Then, for a monochromatic periodic potential (which also satisfies a suitable no-resonance condition) we investigate the asymptotic behavior of the survival probability of a bound state of the time-independent problem. Such probability is shown to have a time decay of order $\mathcal{O}(\log t/t)^2$, up to lower order terms.

On the continuum limit for a model of binary waveguide arrays

In this paper we prove the convergence of solutions to discrete models for binary waveguide arrays toward those of their formal continuum limit, for which we also show the existence of localized standing waves. This work rigorously justifies formal arguments and numerical simulations present in the Physics literature.

Concavity properties for solutions to $p$-Laplace equations with concave nonlinearities

We obtain new concavity results, up to a suitable transformation, for a class of quasi-linear equations in a convex domain involving the $p$-Laplace operator and a general nonlinearity satisfying concavity type assumptions. This provides an extension of results previously known in the literature only for the torsion and the eigenfunction equations. In the semilinear case $p = 2$ the results are already new since they include new admissible nonlinearities.

Timescales of the chaos onset in the general relativistic Poynting-Robertson effect

It has been proved that the general relativistic Poynting-Robertson effect in the equatorial plane of Kerr metric shows a chaotic behavior for a suitable range of parameters. As a further step, we calculate the timescale for the onset of chaos through the Lyapunov exponents, estimating how this trend impacts on the observational dynamics. We conclude our analyses with a discussion on the possibility to observe this phenomenon in neutron star and black hole astrophysical sources.

Detection of chaos in the general relativistic Poynting-Robertson effect: Kerr equatorial plane

The general relativistic Poynting-Robertson effect is a dissipative and non-linear dynamical system obtained by perturbing through radiation processes the geodesic motion of test particles orbiting around a spinning compact object, described by the Kerr metric. Using the Melnikov method we find that, in a suitable range of parameters, chaotic behavior is present in the motion of a test particle driven by the Poynting-Robertson effect in the Kerr equatorial plane.

Symmetric solutions for a 2D critical Dirac equation

In this paper we show the existence of infinitely many symmetric solutions for a cubic Dirac equation in two dimensions, which appears as effective model in systems related to honeycomb structures. Such equation is critical for the Sobolev embedding and solutions are found by variational methods. Moreover, we prove also prove smoothness and exponential decay at infinity.

Ground state Dirac bubbles and Killing spinors

We prove a classification result for ground state solutions of the critical Dirac equation on $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq2$. By exploiting its conformal covariance, the equation can be posed on the round sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ and the non-zero solutions at the ground level are given by Killing spinors, up to conformal diffeomorphisms. Moreover, such ground state solutions of the critical Dirac equation are also related to the Yamabe equation for the sphere, for which we crucially exploit some known classification results.

Some properties of Dirac-Einstein bubbles

We prove smoothness and provide the asymptotic behavior at infinity of solutions of Dirac-Einstein equations on $\mathbb{R}^3$, which appear in the bubbling analysis of conformal Dirac-Einstein equations on spin 3-manifolds. Moreover, we classify ground state solutions, proving that the scalar part is given by Aubin-Talenti functions, while the spinorial part is the conformal image of $-\frac{1}{2}$-Killing spinors on the round sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$.
