The Deligne-Simpson Problem

Given k similarity classes of invertible matrices, the Deligne-Simpson problem asks to determine whether or not one can find matrices in these classes whose product is the identity and with no common invariant subspace. The first author conjectured an answer in terms of an associated root system, and proved one implication in joint work with Shaw. In this paper we prove the other implication, thus confirming the conjecture.

Semilinear clannish algebras

We define a class of associative algebras generalizing 'clannish algebras', as introduced by the second author, but also incorporating semilinear structure, like a skew polynomial ring. Clannish algebras generalize the well known 'string algebras' introduced by Butler and Ringel. Our main result is the classification of finite-dimensional indecomposable modules for these new algebras.

On deformed preprojective algebras

Deformed preprojective algebras are generalizations of the usual preprojective algebras introduced by Crawley-Boevey and Holland, which have applications to Kleinian singularities, the Deligne-Simpson problem, integrable systems and noncommutative geometry. In this paper we offer three contributions to the study of such algebras: (1) the 2-Calabi-Yau property; (2) the unification of the reflection functors of Crawley-Boevey and Holland with reflection functors for the usual preprojective algebras; and (3) the classification of tilting ideals in 2-Calabi-Yau algebras, and especially in deformed preprojective algebras for extended Dynkin quivers.

Decomposition of persistence modules

We show that a pointwise finite-dimensional persistence module indexed over a small category decomposes into a direct sum of indecomposables with local endomorphism rings. As an application of this result we give new, short proofs of fundamental structure theorems for persistence modules.

Combinatorics of faithfully balanced modules

We study and classify faithfully balanced modules for the algebra of lower triangular $n$ by $n$ matrices. The theory extends known results about tilting modules, which are classified by binary trees, and counted with the Catalan numbers. The number of faithfully balanced modules is a $2$-factorial number. Among them are $n!$ modules with $n$ indecomposable summands, which can be classified by interleaved binary trees or by increasing binary trees.

A new approach to simple modules for preprojective algebras

The work of the first author on the moment map for representations of quivers included a classification of the possible dimension vectors of simple modules for deformed preprojective algebras. That classification was later used to solve an additive analogue of the Deligne-Simpson problem. The last step in the proof of the classification involved some general position arguments; here we give a new approach which avoids such arguments.

Representations of equipped graphs: Auslander-Reiten theory

Representations of equipped graphs were introduced by Gelfand and Ponomarev; they are similar to representation of quivers, but one does not need to choose an orientation of the graph. In a previous article we have shown that, as in Kac's Theorem for quivers, the dimension vectors of indecomposable representations are exactly the positive roots for the graph. In this article we begin by surveying that work, and then we go on to discuss Auslander-Reiten theory for equipped graphs, and give examples of Auslander-Reiten quivers.

Classification of modules for infinite-dimensional string algebras

We relax the definition of a string algebra to also include infinite-dimensional algebras such as k[x,y]/(xy). Using the functorial filtration method, which goes back to Gelfand and Ponomarev, we show that finitely generated and artinian modules (and more generally finitely controlled and pointwise artinian modules) are classified in terms of string and band modules. This subsumes the known classifications of finite-dimensional modules for string algebras and of finitely generated modules for k[x,y]/(xy). Unlike in the finite-dimensional case, the words parameterizing string modules may be infinite.

On quiver Grassmannians and orbit closures for representation-finite algebras

We show that Auslander algebras have a unique tilting and cotilting module which is generated and cogenerated by a projective-injective; its endomorphism ring is called the projective quotient algebra. For any representation-finite algebra, we use the projective quotient algebra to construct desingularizations of quiver Grassmannians, orbit closures in representation varieties, and their desingularizations. This generalizes results of Cerulli Irelli, Feigin and Reineke.

The observable structure of persistence modules

In persistent topology, q-tame modules appear as a natural and large class of persistence modules indexed over the real line for which a persistence diagram is definable. However, unlike persistence modules indexed over a totally ordered finite set or the natural numbers, such diagrams do not provide a complete invariant of q-tame modules. The purpose of this paper is to show that the category of persistence modules can be adjusted to overcome this issue. We introduce the observable category of persistence modules: a localization of the usual category, in which the classical properties of q-tame modules still hold but where the persistence diagram is a complete isomorphism invariant and all q-tame modules admit an interval decomposition.

Kac's Theorem for equipped graphs and for maximal rank representations

We give two generalizations of Kac's Theorem on representations of quivers. One is to representations of equipped graphs by relations, in the sense of Gelfand and Ponomarev. The other is to representations of quivers in which certain of the linear maps are required to have maximal rank.

Monodromy for systems of vector bundles and multiplicative preprojective algebras

We study systems involving vector bundles and logarithmic connections on Riemann surfaces and linear algebra data linking their residues. This generalizes representations of deformed preprojective algebras. Our main result is the existence of a monodromy functor from such systems to representations of a multiplicative preprojective algebra. As a corollary, we prove that the multiplicative preprojective algebra associated to a Dynkin quiver is isomorphic to the usual preprojective algebra.

Connections for weighted projective lines

We introduce a notion of a connection on a coherent sheaf on a weighted projective line (in the sense of Geigle and Lenzing). Using a theorem of Huebner and Lenzing we show, under a mild hypothesis, that if one considers coherent sheaves equipped with such a connection, and one passes to the perpendicular category to a nonzero vector bundle without self-extensions, then the resulting category is equivalent to the category of representations of a deformed preprojective algebra.

General sheaves over weighted projective lines

We develop a theory of general sheaves over weighted projective lines. We define and study a canonical decomposition, analogous to Kac's canonical decomposition for representations of quivers, study subsheaves of a general sheaf, general ranks of morphisms, and prove analogues of Schofield's results on general representations of quivers. Using these, we give a recursive algorithm for computing properties of general sheaves. Many of our results are proved in a more abstract setting, involving a hereditary abelian category.

Kac's Theorem for weighted projective lines

We prove an analogue of Kac's Theorem, describing the dimension vectors of indecomposable coherent sheaves, or parabolic bundles, over weighted projective lines. We use a theorem of Peng and Xiao to associate a Lie algebra to the category of coherent sheaves for a weighted projective line over a finite field, and find elements of this Lie algebra which satisfy the relations defining the loop algebra of a Kac-Moody Lie algebra.
