Geometric obstructions to Lipschitz transport between weighted Hessian $\mathrm{CD}(\kappa,\infty)$ manifolds

We construct a weighted Riemannian manifold $(\mathbb R^2,g,\mu)$ satisfying $\mathrm{CD}(1/2,\infty)$, the curvature-dimension condition, with the following property: if $\gamma$ denotes a centered Gaussian measure on $\mathbb R^2$, then there is no Lipschitz map $T:(\mathbb R^2,\|\cdot\|) \to (\mathbb R^2,g)$ satisfying $T_\#\gamma=\mu$. Building on this, we prove a Weyl-type asymptotic law for the eigenvalues of the weighted Laplacian $-\Delta_{g,\mu}$ and show that they are asymptotically negligible when compared to the eigenvalues of $-\Delta_{\gamma}$. These results give strong counterexamples to two questions of E. Milman and complement the recent counterexample of Aryan.

On the image of graph distance matrices

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite, simple, connected, combinatorial graph on $n$ vertices and let $D \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times n}$ be its graph distance matrix $D_{ij} = d(v_i, v_j)$. Steinerberger (J. Graph Theory, 2023) empirically observed that the linear system of equations $Dx =\mathbf{1}$, where $\mathbf{1} = (1,1,\dots, 1)^{T}$, very frequently has a solution (even in cases where $D$ is not invertible). The smallest nontrivial example of a graph where the linear system is not solvable are two graphs on 7 vertices. We prove that, in fact, counterexamples exists for all $n\geq 7$. The construction is somewhat delicate and further suggests that such examples are perhaps rare. We also prove that for Erdős-Rényi random graphs the graph distance matrix $D$ is invertible with high probability. We conclude with some structural results on the Perron-Frobenius eigenvector for a distance matrix.

Solving the n-color ice model

Given an arbitrary choice of two sets of nonzero Boltzmann weights for $n$-color lattice models, we provide explicit algebraic conditions on these Boltzmann weights which guarantee a solution (i.e., a third set of weights) to the Yang-Baxter equation. Furthermore we provide an explicit one-dimensional parametrization of all solutions in this case. These $n$-color lattice models are so named because their admissible vertices have adjacent edges labeled by one of $n$ colors with additional restrictions. The two-colored case specializes to the six-vertex model, in which case our results recover the familiar quadric condition of Baxter for solvability. The general $n$-color case includes important solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation like the evaluation modules for the quantum affine Lie algebra $U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_n)$. Finally, we demonstrate the invariance of this class of solutions under natural transformations, including those associated with Drinfeld twisting.

A characterization of graphs with at most four boundary vertices

Steinerberger defined a notion of boundary for a graph and established a corresponding isoperimetric inquality. Hence, "large" graphs have more boundary vertices. In this paper, we first characterize graphs with three boundary vertices in terms of two infinite families of graphs. We then completely characterize graphs with four boundary vertices in terms of eight families of graphs, five of which are infinite. This parallels earlier work by Hasegawa and Saito as well as M\"uller, P\'or, and Sereni on another notion of boundary defined by Chartrand, Erwin, Johns, and Zhang.

Distinct Distances with $\ell_p$ Spaces

We study Erd\H os's distinct distances problem under $\ell_p$ metrics with integer $p$. We improve the current best bound for this problem from $\Omega(n^{4/5})$ to $\Omega(n^{6/7-\epsilon})$, for any $\epsilon>0$. We also characterize the sets that span an asymptotically minimal number of distinct distances under the $\ell_1$ and $\ell_\infty$ metrics.
