Global Prevalence of Anti-similar Earthquakes at Intermediate Depth

Anti-similar earthquakes, those with nearly identical but flipped waveforms, remain an uncommon observation. We document three locations where these events occur at intermediate depth. The first of these is Colombia, including the well-established source of anti-similar events in the Bucaramanga Nest, and new reports in other intermediate depth seismicity clusters in the Wadati-Benioff zones of Colombia. The second is the Alaska subduction zone, and the third is the Vrancea seismic nest in Romania. These new observations, combined with reports from Japan and Chile, provide mounting evidence that anti-similar earthquake sequences might be a common or characteristic process of intermediate-depth seismicity. Either conjugate faulting promoted by eclogitization induced stresses or sub-parallel faulting can explain their occurrence at these depths. Careful examination of seismicity in other productive intermediate depth seismicity zones might reveal an even more widespread geography for anti-similar earthquakes and place tighter constraints on their underlying mechanism.

Enhanced Seismicity Monitoring in the Rapid Scientific Response to the 2025 Santorini Crisis

We used a deep learning workflow to enhance earthquake detection during the 2025 seismic unrest between Santorini and Amorgos islands to track the evolution of the crisis in near real-time. We analysed the continuous seismic waveforms daily (1/2 - 3/3/25) as the crisis unfolded. Our analysis enhanced the earthquake catalogue from around 4,000 to 80,000 earthquakes. The enhanced catalogue allowed this international expert group to identify the volcanic-tectonic character, clearly revealing burst-like, spasmodic seismicity swarms, which is a pattern associated with fluid-driven processes from early stages of the crisis. Detailed moment tensor inversions in early events characterised by a significant non-double couple component indicated the involvement of magmatic or high-pressure hydrothermal fluids driving the unrest. Concurrent DL-enhanced tomography efforts identified a third, deep magmatic reservoir beneath Anydros Islet, consistent with pressure-driven processes. To date, volcanic-tectonic swarms in which >200 earthquakes of ML > 4 occurred within only a few weeks, largely within episodic bursts of seismicity, have not been observed elsewhere.

CheXtransfer: Performance and Parameter Efficiency of ImageNet Models for Chest X-Ray Interpretation

Deep learning methods for chest X-ray interpretation typically rely on pretrained models developed for ImageNet. This paradigm assumes that better ImageNet architectures perform better on chest X-ray tasks and that ImageNet-pretrained weights provide a performance boost over random initialization. In this work, we compare the transfer performance and parameter efficiency of 16 popular convolutional architectures on a large chest X-ray dataset (CheXpert) to investigate these assumptions. First, we find no relationship between ImageNet performance and CheXpert performance for both models without pretraining and models with pretraining. Second, we find that, for models without pretraining, the choice of model family influences performance more than size within a family for medical imaging tasks. Third, we observe that ImageNet pretraining yields a statistically significant boost in performance across architectures, with a higher boost for smaller architectures. Fourth, we examine whether ImageNet architectures are unnecessarily large for CheXpert by truncating final blocks from pretrained models, and find that we can make models 3.25x more parameter-efficient on average without a statistically significant drop in performance. Our work contributes new experimental evidence about the relation of ImageNet to chest x-ray interpretation performance.
