Dirac Green's function approach to graphene-superconductor junctions with well defined edges

This work presents a novel approach to describe spectral properties of graphene layers with well defined edges. We microscopically analyze the boundary problem for the continuous Bogoliubov-de Gennes-Dirac (BdGD) equations and derive the Green functions for normal and superconducting graphene layers. Importing the idea used in tight-binding (TB) models of a microscopic hopping that couples different regions, we are able to set up and solve an algebraic Dyson's equation describing a graphene-superconductor junction. For this coupled system we analytically derive the Green functions and use them to calculate the local density of states and the spatial variation of the induced pairing correlations in the normal region. Signatures of specular Andreev reflections are identified.

Long range crossed Andreev reflections in high Tc superconductors

We analyze the non-local transport properties of a d-wave superconductor coupled to metallic electrodes at nanoscale distances. We show that the non-local conductance exhibits an algebraical decay with distance rather than the exponential behavior which is found in conventional superconductors. Crossed Andreev processes, associated with electronic entanglement, are favored for certain orientations of the symmetry axes of the superconductor with respect to the leads. These properties would allow its experimental detection using present technologies.

Work and energy in inertial and non inertial reference frames

It is usual in introductory courses of mechanics to develop the work and energy formalism from Newton's laws. On the other hand, literature analyzes the way in which forces transform under a change of reference frame. Notwithstanding, no analogous study is done for the way in which work and energy transform under those changes of reference frames. We analyze the behavior of energy and work under such transformations and show explicitly the expected invariance of the formalism under Galilean transformations for one particle and a system of particles. The case of non inertial systems is also analyzed and the fictitious works are characterized. In particular, we show that the total fictitious work in the center of mass system vanishes even if the center of mass defines a non inertial frame. Finally, some subtleties that arise from the formalism are illustrated by examples.

The geometrical nature and some properties of the capacitance coefficients based on Laplace's Equation

The fact that the capacitance coefficients for a set of conductors are geometrical factors is derived in most electricity and magnetism textbooks. We present an alternative derivation based on Laplace's equation that is accessible for an intermediate course on electricity and magnetism. The properties of Laplace's equation permits to prove many properties of the capacitance matrix. Some examples are given to illustrate the usefulness of such properties.

Electrostatic internal energy using the method of images

For several configurations of charges in the presence of conductors, the method of images permits us to obtain some observables associated with such a configuration by replacing the conductors with some image charges. However, simple inspection shows that the potential energy associated with both systems does not coincide. Nevertheless, it can be shown that for a system of a grounded or neutral conductor and a distribution of charges outside, the external potential energy associated with the real charge distribution embedded in the field generated by the set of image charges is twice the value of the internal potential energy associated with the original system. This assertion is valid for any size and shape of the conductor, and regardless of the configuration of images required. In addition, even in the case in which the conductor is not grounded nor neutral, it is still possible to calculate the internal potential energy of the original configuration through the method of images. These results show that the method of images could also be useful for calculations of the internal potential energy of the original system.

The relation between momentum conservation and Newton's third law revisited

Under certain conditions usually fulfilled in classical mechanics, the principle of conservation of linear momentum and Newton's third law are equivalent. However, the demonstration of this fact is usually incomplete in textbooks. We shall show here that to demonstrate the equivalence, we require the explicit use of the principle of superposition contained in Newton's second law. On the other hand, under some additional conditions the combined laws of conservation of linear and angular momentum, are equivalent to Newton's third law with central forces. The conditions for such equivalence apply in many scenarios of classical mechanics; once again the principle of superposition contained in Newton's second law is the clue.

Moments of inertia for solids of revolution and variational methods

We present some formulae for the moments of inertia of homogeneous solids of revolution in terms of the functions that generate the solids. The development of these expressions exploits the cylindrical symmetry of these objects, and avoids the explicit use of multiple integration, providing an easy and pedagogical approach. The explicit use of the functions that generate the solid gives the possibility of writing the moment of inertia as a functional, which in turn allows us to utilize the calculus of variations to obtain a new insight into some properties of this fundamental quantity. In particular, minimization of moments of inertia under certain restrictions is possible by using variational methods.

On the transformation of torques between the laboratory and center of mass reference frames

It is commonly stated in Newtonian Mechanics that the torque with respect to the laboratory frame is equal to the torque with respect to the center of mass frame plus a (R X F) factor, with "R" being the position of the center of mass and "F" denoting the total external force. Although this assertion is true, there is a subtlety in the demonstration that is overlooked in the textbooks. In addition, it is necessary to clarify that if the reference frame attached to the center of mass rotates with respect to certain inertial frame, the assertion is not true any more.

Using symmetries and generating functions to calculate and minimize moments of inertia

This paper presents some formulae to calculate moments of inertia for solids of revolution and for solids generated by contour plots. For this, the symmetry properties and the generating functions of the figures are utilized. The combined use of generating functions and symmetry properties greatly simplifies many practical calculations. In addition, the explicit use of generating functions gives the possibility of writing the moment of inertia as a functional, which in turn allows to utilize the calculus of variations to obtain a new insight about some properties of this fundamental quantity. In particular, minimization of moments of inertia under certain restrictions is possible by using variational methods.

Quantum point contact conductance in NINS junctions

The effect of an insulating barrier located at a distance $a$ from a NS quantum point contact is analyzed in this work. The Bogoliubov de Gennes equations are solved for NINS junctions (S: anysotropic superconductor, I: insulator and N: normal metal), where the NIN region is a quantum wire. For $% a\neq0$, bound states and resonances in the differential conductance are predicted. These resonances depend on the symmetry of the pair potential, the strength of the insulating barrier and $a $. Our results show that in a NINS quantum point contact the number of resonances vary with the symmetry of the order parameter. This is to be contrasted with the results for the NINS junction, in which only the position of the resonances changes with the symmetry.
