Evolution of nematic fluctuations in CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$ with spin-vortex crystal magnetic order

The CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$ superconductors resemble the archetypal 122-type iron-based materials but have a crystal structure with distinctly lower symmetry. This family hosts one of the few examples of the so-called spin-vortex crystal magnetic order, a non-collinear magnetic configuration that preserves tetragonal symmetry, in contrast to the orthorhombic collinear stripe-type magnetic configuration common to the 122-type systems. Thus, nematic order is completely absent from its phase diagram. To investigate the evolution of nematic fluctuations in such a case, we present elastoresistance and elastic modulus measurements in CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$ ($x = 0-0.05$) combined with phenomenological modeling and density functional theory. We find clear experimental signatures of considerable nematic fluctuations, including softening of the Young's modulus $Y_{[110]}$ and a Curie-Weiss type divergence of the B2g elastoresistance coefficient in CaK(Fe$_{0.951}$Ni$_{0.049}$)$_4$As$_4$. Overall, nematic fluctuations within this series bear strong similarities to the hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ series, including a substitution-induced sign change. Our theoretical analysis addresses the effect of the specific crystal symmetry of the 1144-type structure in determining its magnetic ground state and on the nematic fluctuations.

Anisotropic superconductivity and Fermi surface reconstruction in the spin-vortex antiferromagnetic superconductor CaK(Fe$_{0.95}$Ni$_{0.05}$)$_4$As$_4$

High critical temperature superconductivity often occurs in systems where an antiferromagnetic order is brought near $T=0K$ by slightly modifying pressure or doping. CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is a superconducting, stoichiometric iron pnictide compound showing optimal superconducting critical temperature with $T_c$ as large as $38$ K. Doping with Ni induces a decrease in $T_c$ and the onset of spin-vortex antiferromagnetic order, which consists of spins pointing inwards to or outwards from alternating As sites on the diagonals of the in-plane square Fe lattice. Here we study the band structure of CaK(Fe$_{0.95}$Ni$_{0.05}$)$_4$As$_4$ (T$_c$ = 10 K, T$_N$ = 50 K) using quasiparticle interference with a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) and show that the spin-vortex order induces a Fermi surface reconstruction and a fourfold superconducting gap anisotropy.

Magnetism and its coexistence with superconductivity in CaK(Fe$_{0.949}$Ni$_{0.051}$)$_4$As$_4$: muon spin rotation/relaxation studies

The magnetic response of CaK(Fe$_{0.949}$Ni$_{0.051}$)$_4$As$_4$ was investigated by means of the muon-spin rotation/relaxation. The long-range commensurate magnetic order sets in below the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}= 50.0(5)$~K. The density-functional theory calculations have identified three possible muon stopping sites. The experimental data were found to be consistent with only one type of magnetic structure, namely, the long-range magnetic spin-vortex-crystal order with the hedgehog motif within the $ab-$plane and the antiferromagnetic stacking along the $c-$direction. The value of the ordered magnetic moment at $T\approx3$ K was estimated to be $m_{\rm Fe}=0.38(11)$ $μ_{\rm B}$ ($μ_{\rm B}$ is the Bohr magneton). A microscopic coexistence of magnetic and superconducting phases accompanied by a reduction of the magnetic order parameter below the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}\simeq 9$ K is observed. Comparison with 11, 122, and 1144 families of Fe-based pnictides points to existence of correlation between the reduction of the magnetic order parameter at $T\rightarrow 0$ and the ratio of the transition temperatures $T_{\rm c}/T_{\rm N}$. Such correlations were found to be described by Machida's model for coexistence of itinerant spin-density wave magnetism and superconductivity [Machida, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 50, 2195 (1981) and Bud'ko et al., Phys. Rev. B 98, 144520 (2018)].

Fantastic flat bands and where to find them: The CoSn-type compounds

Quantum interference on the kagome lattice generates electronic bands with narrow bandwidth, called flat bands. Crystal structures incorporating this lattice can host strong electron correlations with non-standard ingredients, but only if these bands lie at the Fermi level. In the six compounds with the CoSn structure type (FeGe, FeSn, CoSn, NiIn, RhPb, and PtTl) the transition metals form a kagome lattice. The two iron variants are robust antiferromagnets so we focus on the latter four and investigate their thermodynamic and transport properties. We consider these results and calculated band structures to locate and characterize the flat bands in these materials. We propose that CoSn and RhPb deserve the community's attention for exploring flat band physics.

Synthesis, magnetization and heat capacity of triangular lattice materials NaErSe$_2$ and KErSe$_2$

In this paper we report the synthesis, magnetization and heat capacity of the frustrated magnets \emph{A}ErSe$_2$(\emph{A}=Na,K) which contain perfect triangular lattices of Er$^{3+}$. The magnetization data suggests no long-range magnetic order exists in \emph{A}ErSe$_2$(\emph{A}=Na,K), which is consistent with the heat capacity measurements. Large anisotropy is observed between the magnetization within the \emph{ab} plane and along the \emph{c} axis of both compounds. When the magnetic field is applied along \emph{ab} plane, anomalies are observed at 1.8 $μ_B$ in NaErSe$_2$ at 0.2 T and 2.1 $μ_B$ in KErSe$_2$ at 0.18 T. Unlike NaErSe$_2$, a plateau-like field-induced metamagnetic transition is observed for H$\|$\emph{c} below 1 K in KErSe$_2$. Two broad peaks are observed in the heat capacity below 10 K indicating possible crystal electric field(CEF) effects and magnetic entropy released under different magnetic fields. All results indicate that \emph{A}ErSe$_2$ are strongly anisotropic, frustrated magnets with field-induced transition at low temperature. The lack of signatures for long-range magnetic order implies that these materials are candidates for hosting a quantum spin liquid ground state.

Quasi 2-D magnetism in the Kagome layer compound FeSn

Single crystals of the single Kagome layer compound FeSn are investigated using x-ray and neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility and magnetization, heat capacity, resistivity, Hall, Seebeck, thermal expansion, thermal conductivity measurements and density functional theory (DFT). FeSn is a planar antiferromagnet below TN = 365 K and exhibits ferromagnetic magnetic order within each Kagome layer. The in-plane magnetic susceptibility is sensitive to synthesis conditions. Resistivity, Hall and Seebeck results indicate multiple bands near the Fermi energy. The resistivity of FeSn is about 3 times lower for current along the stacking direction than in the plane, suggesting that transport and the bulk electronic structure of FeSn is not quasi 2D. FeSn is an excellent metal with Rho(300K)/Rho(2K) values about 100 in both directions. While the ordered state is antiferromagnetic, high temperature susceptibility measurements indicate a ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature of 173 K, reflecting the strong in-plane ferromagnetic interactions. DFT calculations show a 3D electronic structure with the Dirac nodal lines along the K-H directions in the magnetic Brillouin zone about 0.3 eV below the Fermi energy, with the Dirac dispersions at the K points gapped by spin-orbit coupling except at the H point. The magnetism, however, is highly 2D with Jin-plane/Jout-of-plane = 10. The predicted spin-wave spectrum is presented.

Ultrahigh Elastically Compressible and Strain-Engineerable Intermetallic Compounds Under Uniaxial Mechanical Loading

Intermetallic compounds possess unique atomic arrangements that often lead to exceptional material properties, but their extreme brittleness usually causes fracture at a limited strain of less than 1% and prevents their practical use. Therefore, it is critical for them to exhibit either plasticity or some form of structural transition to absorb and release a sufficient amount of mechanical energy before failure occurs. This study reports that the ThCr2Si2-structured intermetallic compound (CaFe2As2) and a hybrid of its structure (CaKFe4As4) with 2 μm in diameter and 6 μm in height can exhibit superelasticity with strain up to 17% through a reversible, deformation-induced, lattice collapse, leading to a modulus of resilience orders of magnitude higher than that of most engineering materials. Such superelasticity also can enable strain engineering, which refers to the modification of material properties through elastic strain. Density Functional Theory calculations and cryogenic nanomechanical tests predict that superconductivity in CaKFe4As4 could be turned on/off through the superelasticity process, before fracture occurs, even under uniaxial compression, which is the favorable switching loading mode in most engineering applications. Our results suggest that other members with the same crystal structure (more than 2500 intermetallic compounds), and substitution series based on them should be examined for the possibility of manifesting similar superelastic and strain-engineerable functional properties.

Anisotropy induced vortex lattice rearrangement in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$

The magnetic penetration depth anisotropy $γ_λ=λ_{c}/λ_{ab}$ ($λ_{ab}$ and $λ_{c}$ are the in-plane and the out-of-plane components of the magnetic penetration depth) in a CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ single crystal sample (the critical temperature $T_{\rm c}\simeq 35$ K) was studied by means of muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR). $γ_λ$ is almost temperature independent for $T\lesssim 20$ K ($γ_λ\simeq 1.9$) and it reaches $\simeq 3.0$ by approaching $T_{\rm c}$. The change of $γ_λ$ induces the corresponding rearrangement of the flux line lattice (FLL), which is clearly detected via enhanced distortions of the FLL $μ$SR response. Comparison of $γ_λ$ with the anisotropy of the upper critical field ($γ_{H_{\rm c2}}$) studied in Phys. Rev B {\bf 94}, 064501 (2016), reveals that $γ_λ$ is systematically higher than $γ_{H_{\rm c2}}$ at low-temperatures and approaches $γ_{H_{\rm c2}}$ for $T \rightarrow T_{\rm c}$. The anisotropic properties of $λ$ are explained by the multi-gap nature of superconductivity in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ and are caused by anisotropic contributions of various bands to the in-plane and the out-of-plane components of the superfluid density.

Coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism in CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ as probed by $^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy

Temperature dependent $^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and specific heat measurements for CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ with $x$ = 0, 0.017, 0.033, and 0.049 are presented. No magnetic hyperfine field (e.g. no static magnetic order) down to 5.5 K was detected for $x$ = 0 and 0.017 in agreement with the absence of any additional feature below superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, in the specific heat data. The evolution of magnetic hyperfine field with temperature was studied for $x$ = 0.033 and 0.049. The long-range magnetic order in these two compounds coexists with superconductivity. The magnetic hyperfine field, $B_{hf}$, (ordered magnetic moment) below $T_c$ in CaK(Fe$_{0.967}$Ni$_{0.033}$)$_4$As$_4$ is continuously suppressed with the developing superconducting order parameter. The $B_{hf}(T)$ data for CaK(Fe$_{0.967}$Ni$_{0.033}$)$_4$As$_4$, and CaK(Fe$_{0.951}$Ni$_{0.049}$)$_4$As$_4$ can be described reasonably well by Machida's model for coexistence of itinerant spin density wave magnetism and superconductivity [K. Machida, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 50}, 2195 (1981)]. We demonstrate directly that superconductivity suppresses the spin density wave order parameter if the conditions are right, in agreement with the theoretical analysis.

Subdominant $d$-wave interaction in superconducting CaKFe$_4$As$_2$?

We report inelastic light scattering results on the stoichiometric and fully ordered superconductor CaKFe$_4$As$_2$ as a function of temperature and light polarization. In the energy range between 10 and 315 cm$^{-1}$ (1.24 and 39.1 meV) we observe the particle-hole continuum above and below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ and 7 of the 8 Raman active phonons. The main focus is placed on the analysis of the electronic excitations. Below $T_c$ all three symmetries projected with in-plane polarizations display a redistribution of spectral weight characteristic for superconductivity. The energies of the pair-breaking peaks in $A_{1g}$ and $B_{2g}$ symmetry are in approximate agreement with the results from photoemission studies. In $B_{1g}$ symmetry the difference between normal and superconducting state is most pronounced, and the feature is shifted downwards with respect to those in $A_{1g}$ and $B_{2g}$ symmetry. The maximum peaking at 134 cm$^{-1}$ (16.6 meV) has a substructure on the high-energy side. We interpret the peak at 134 cm$^{-1}$ in terms of a collective Bardasis-Schrieffer (BS) mode and the substructure as a remainder of the pair-breaking feature on the electron bands. There is a very weak peak at 50 cm$^{-1}$ (6.2 meV) which is tentatively assigned to another BS mode.

Pressure-temperature phase diagrams of CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_4$As$_4$ superconductors

The pressure dependence of the magnetic and superconducting transitions, as well as that of the superconducting upper critical field is reported for CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_4$As$_4$, the first example of an Fe-based superconductor with spin-vortex-crystal-type magnetic ordering. Resistance measurements were performed on single crystals with two substitution levels ($x=0.033, 0.050$) under hydrostatic pressures up to 5.12 GPa and in magnetic fields up to 9 T. Our results show that, for both compositions, magnetic transition temperatures, $T_\textrm{N}$, are suppressed upon applying pressure, the superconducting transition temperatures $T_\textrm{c}$ are suppressed by pressure as well, except for $x=0.050$ in the pressure region where $T_\textrm{N}$ and $T_\textrm{c}$ cross. Furthermore, the pressure associated with the crossing of the $T_\textrm{N}$ and $T_\textrm{c}$ lines also coincides with a minimum in the normalized slope of the superconducting upper critical field, consistent with a likely Fermi-surface reconstruction associated with the loss of magnetic ordering. Finally, at $p \sim$ 4 GPa, both Ni-substituted CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_4$As$_4$ samples likely go through a half-collapsed-tetragonal (hcT) phase transition, similar to the parent compound CaKFe$_4$As$_4$.

In-plane magnetic penetration depth of superconducting CaKFe$_4$As$_4$

The temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth ($λ_{ab}$) in an extensively characterized sample of superconducting CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ ($T_{\rm c}\simeq35$ K) was investigated using muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR). A comparison of $λ_{ab}^{-2}(T)$ measured by $μ$SR with the one inferred from ARPES data confirms the presence of multiple gaps at the Fermi level. An agreement between $μ$SR and ARPES requires the presence of additional bands, which are not resolved by ARPES experiments. These bands are characterized by small supercondcting gaps with an average zero-temperature value of $Δ_{0} =$ 2.4(2) meV. Our data suggest that in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ the $s^\pm$ order parameter symmetry acquires a more sophisticated form by allowing a sign change not only between electron and hole pockets, but also within pockets of similar type.

Lack of superconductivity in the phase diagram of single-crystalline Eu(Fe1-xCox)2As2 grown by transition metal arsenide flux

The interplay of magnetism and superconductivity (SC) has been a focus of interest in condensed matter physics for decades. EuFe2As2 has been identified as a potential platform to investigate interactions between structural, magnetic, electronic effects as well as coexistence of magnetism and SC with similar transition temperatures. However, there are obvious inconsistencies in the reported phase diagrams of Eu(Fe1-xCox)2As2 crystals grown by different methods. For transition metal arsenide (TMA)-flux-grown crystals, even the existence of SC is open for dispute. Here we re-examine the phase diagram of single-crystalline Eu(Fe1-xCox)2As2 grown by TMA flux. We found that the lattice parameter c shrinks linearly with Co doping, almost twice as fast as that of the tin-flux-grown crystals. With Co doping, the spin-density-wave (SDW) order of Fe sublattice is quickly suppressed, being detected only up to x = 0.08. The magnetic ordering temperature of the Eu2+ sublattice (TEu) shows a systematic evolution with Co doping, first going down and reaching a minimum at x = 0.08, then increasing continuously up to x = 0.24. Over the whole composition range investigated, no signature of SC is observed.

Pressure induced half-collapsed-tetragonal phase in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$

We report the temperature-pressure phase diagram of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ established using high pressure electrical resistivity, magnetization and high energy x-ray diffraction measurements up to 6 GPa. With increasing pressure, both resistivity and magnetization data show that the bulk superconducting transition of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is suppressed and then disappears at $p$ $\gtrsim$ 4 GPa. High pressure x-ray data clearly indicate a phase transition to a collapsed tetragonal phase in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ under pressure that coincides with the abrupt loss of bulk superconductivity near 4 GPa. The x-ray data, combined with resistivity data, indicate that the collapsed tetragonal transition line is essentially vertical, occuring at 4.0(5) GPa for temperatures below 150 K. Band structure calculations also find a sudden transition to a collapsed tetragonal state near 4 GPa, as As-As bonding takes place across the Ca-layer. Bonding across the K-layer only occurs for $p$ $\geq$ 12 GPa. These findings demonstrate a new type of collapsed tetragonal phase in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$: a half-collapsed-tetragonal phase.

$^{57}$Fe Mössbauer study of stoichiometric iron based superconductor CaKFe$_4$As$_4$: a comparison to KFe$_2$As$_2$ and CaFe$_2$As$_2$

$^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectra at different temperatures between $\sim 5$ K and $\sim 300$ K were measured on an oriented mosaic of single crystals of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ . The data indicate that CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is a well formed compound with narrow spectral lines, no traces of other, Fe - containing, secondary phases in the spectra and no static magnetic order. There is no discernible feature at the superconducting transition temperature in any of the hyperfine parameters. The temperature dependence of the quadrupole splitting approximately follows the empirical "$T^{3/2}$ law". The hyperfine parameters of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ are compared with those for KFe$_2$As$_2$ measured in this work, and the literature data for CaFe$_2$As$_2$, and were found to be in between those for these two, ordered, 122 compounds, in agreement with the gross view of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ as a structural analog of KFe$_2$As$_2$ and CaFe$_2$As$_2$ that has alternating Ca - and K - layers in the structure.

Physical properties of single crystalline $R$Mg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ ($R$ = Y, Ce-Nd, Gd-Dy, Yb) and the search for in-plane magnetic anisotropy in hexagonal systems

Single crystals of $R$Mg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ ($R$=Y, Ce-Nd, Gd-Dy, Yb) were grown using a high-temperature solution growth technique and were characterized by measurements of room-temperature x-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent specific heat and temperature-, field-dependent resistivity and anisotropic magnetization. YMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ is a non-local-moment-bearing metal with an electronic specific heat coefficient, $γ\sim$ 15 mJ/mol K$^2$. Yb is divalent and basically non-moment bearing in YbMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$. Ce is trivalent in CeMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ with two magnetic transitions being observed at 2.1 K and 1.5 K. PrMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ does not exhibit any magnetic phase transition down to 0.5 K. The other members being studied ($R$=Nd, Gd-Dy) all exhibits antiferromagnetic transitions at low-temperatures ranging from 3.2 K for NdMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ to 11.9 K for TbMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$. Whereas GdMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ is isotropic in its paramagnetic state due to zero angular momentum ($L$=0), all the other local-moment-bearing members manifest an anisotropic, planar magnetization in their paramagnetic states. To further study this planar anisotropy, detailed angular-dependent magnetization was carried out on magnetically diluted (Y$_{0.99}$Tb$_{0.01}$)Mg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ and (Y$_{0.99}$Dy$_{0.01}$)Mg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$. Despite the strong, planar magnetization anisotropy, the in-plane magnetic anisotropy is weak and field-dependent. A set of crystal electric field parameters are proposed to explain the observed magnetic anisotropy.

Enhancement of the superconducting gap by nesting in CaKFe4As4 - a new high temperature superconductor

We use high resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory with experimentally obtained crystal structure parameters to study the electronic properties of CaKFe4As4. In contrast to related CaFe2As2 compounds, CaKFe4As4 has high Tc of 35K at stochiometric composition. This presents unique opportunity to study properties of high temperature superconductivity of iron arsenic superconductors in absence of doping or substitution. The Fermi surface consists of three hole pockets at $Γ$ and two electron pockets at the $M$ point. We find that the values of the superconducting gap are nearly isotropic, but significantly different for each of the FS sheets. Most importantly we find that the overall momentum dependence of the gap magnitudes plotted across the entire Brillouin zone displays a strong deviation from the simple cos(kx)cos(ky) functional form of the gap function, proposed in the scenario of the Cooper-pairing driven by a short range antiferromagnetic exchange interaction. Instead, the maximum value of the gap is observed for FS sheets that are closest to the ideal nesting condition in contrast to the previous observations in some other ferropnictides. These results provide strong support for the multiband character of superconductivity in CaKFe4As4, in which Cooper pairing forms on the electron and the hole bands interacting via dominant interband repulsive interaction, enhanced by FS nesting}.

Anisotropic magnetoresistance and upper critical fields up to 63 T in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ single crystals

We report the temperature dependencies of the upper critical fields $H_{c\text{2}}^{\text{c}}(T)$ parallel to the c-axis and $H_{c\text{2}}^{\text{ab}}(T)$ parallel to the ab-plane of single crystalline CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ inferred from the measurements of the temperature-dependent resistance in static magnetic fields up to 14 T and magnetoresistance in pulsed fields up to 63 T. We show that the observed decrease of the anisotropy parameter $γ(T)=H_{c\text{2}}^{\text{ab}}/H_{c\text{2}}^{\text{c}}$ from $\simeq 2.5$ at $T_c$ to $\simeq 1.5$ at 25 K can be explained by interplay of paramagnetic pairbreaking and orbital effects in a multiband theory of $H_{c2}$. The slopes of $dH_{c\text{2}}^{\text{c}}/dT\simeq-4.4$ T/K and $dH_{c\text{2}}^{\text{ab}}/dT \simeq-10.9$ T/K at $T_c$ yield an electron mass anisotropy of $m_{ab}/m_c\simeq 1/6$ and short coherence lengths $ξ_c\simeq 5.8\,\textÅ$ and $ξ_{ab}\simeq 14.3\,\textÅ$. The behavior of $H_{c\text{2}}(T)$ turns out to be similar to that of the optimal doped (Ba,K)Fe$_2$As$_2$, with $H_{c\text{2}}^{\text{ab}}(0)$ extrapolating to $\simeq 92$ T, well above the BCS paramagnetic limit.
