Vortex Rings in Event-by-Event Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

We present event-by-event simulations for central asymmetric light+heavy and Au+Au collisions to investigate the formation and evolution of vortex-ring structures in the longitudinal flow velocity profile. The production-plane polarization of $Λ$ hyperons, defined w.r.t. the $Λ$ momentum and the beam, can track the "vortex-ring" feature in the event, a characteristic vortical structure generated by longitudinal flow gradients. We make comprehensive model predictions for the rapidity-dependent vortex-ring observables for different collision system sizes at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 200$ and 72 GeV. Our predictions at the latter energy can be explored in the future LHCb fixed-target experiment at the Large Hadron Collider.

$Λ$ polarization from vortex ring as medium response for jet thermalization

We performed a systematic study on the formation of vorticity rings as the process for jet thermalization in the medium created in high-energy nuclear collisions. In this work, we expanded our previous analysis to a more realistic framework by considering non-central events and fluctuations in the initial condition. We simulate the formation and evolution of the flow vortex structure in a relativistic viscous hydrodynamic model and study the sensitivity of the proposed ``ring observable'' ($\mathcal{R}^{t}_Λ$) that can be measured experimentally through the polarization of $Λ$ hyperons. We show that this observable is robust with respect to fluctuating initial conditions to capture the jet-induce vortex flow signal and further study its dependence on different model parameters, such as the jet's velocity, position, the fluid's shear viscosity, and the collision's centrality. The proposed observable is associated to the formation of vorticity in a quark-gluon plasma, showing that the measurement of particle polarization can be a powerful tool to probe different properties of jet-medium interactions and to understand better the polarization induced by the transverse and longitudinal expansions of the medium.

Cumulants of conserved charges in hydrodynamic simulations

We introduce a fast and simple method of computing cumulants of net-proton or net-charge fluctuations in event-by-event hydrodynamic simulations of heavy-ion collisions. One evaluates the mean numbers of particles in every hydrodynamic event. Cumulants are then expressed as a function of these mean numbers. We implement the corrections due to global conservation laws. The method is tested using ideal hydrodynamic simulations of Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ AGeV with the NeXSPheRIO code. Results are in good agreement with experimental data on net-proton and net-charge fluctuations by the STAR collaboration.

Vortex rings from high energy central p+A collisions

Relativistic p+A collisions may produce droplets of quark gluon plasma (QGP) that quickly develop a toroidal vortex structure similar to that of an expanding smoke ring. We present viscous relativistic hydrodynamic calculations of ultra-central p+A collisions and develop an experimental observable to probe the structure, correlating the polarization and momentum of hyperons emitted from the collision. The effect is robust against changes in the definition of vorticity used to calculate the polarization. Experiments at RHIC and LHC may test the existence and strength of the vortex toroids, bringing new evidence to bear on the question of collectivity in the smallest QGP droplets.

Λ polarization from thermalized jet energy

We examine the formation of vortical "smoke rings" as a result of thermalization of energy lost by a jet. We simulate the formation and evolution of these rings using hydrodynamics and define an observable that allows to probe this phenomenon experimentally. We argue that observation of vorticity associated with jets would be an experimental confirmation of the thermalization of the energy lost by quenched jets, and also a probe of shear viscosity.

Probing the structure of the initial state of heavy-ion collisions with $p_T$-dependent flow fluctuations

The connection between initial-state geometry and anisotropic flow can be quantified through a well-established mapping between $p_T$-integrated flow harmonics and cumulants of the initial transverse energy distribution. In this paper we successfully extend this mapping to also include $p_T$-differential flow. In doing so, we find that subleading principal components of anisotropic flow can reveal previously unobserved details of the hydrodynamic response, in both the linear and the nonlinear regimes. Most importantly, we show that they provide novel information on the small-scale structures present in the initial stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Studies of heavy-ion collisions using PYTHIA Angantyr and UrQMD

In this paper, we show predictions from a new QGP-free, no-equilibration, improved baseline model for heavy-ion collisions. It is comprised of the PYTHIA Angantyr event generator coupled to UrQMD, as a hadronic cascade simulator, and compared to ALICE and CMS data from Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV. This coupling is made possible due to a new implementation of the hadron vertex model in PYTHIA Angantyr. Hadronic rescattering in UrQMD is shown to lead to a significant suppression of mid- to high-$p_\perp$ particle yields that is qualitatively consistent with measurements of nuclear modification factors. We further study the effect of hadronic rescatterings on high-$p_\perp$ particles by using two-particle correlations and show that some suppression of away-side jets occurs in the hadronic phase even without any partonic energy loss. Finally, the decorrelation of dijet structures at high momenta also leads to a reduction of the elliptic flow coefficient $v_{2}\{2\}$. These findings suggest that significant jet-quenching-like effects may still originate in the hadronic, as opposed to the partonic phase and prove that the usual Pb-Pb baseline, composed of a superposition of incoherent pp collisions, ignores coherent phenomena that are not strictly related to the QGP but may still be highly relevant.

Heavy-quarkonium potential with input from lattice gauge theory

In this dissertation we study potential models incorporating a nonperturbative propagator obtained from lattice simulations of a pure gauge theory. Initially we review general aspects of gauge theories, the principles of the lattice formulation of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and some properties of heavy quarkonia, i.e. bound states of a heavy quark and its antiquark. As an illustration of Monte Carlo simulations of lattice models, we present applications in the case of the harmonic oscillator and SU(2) gauge theory. We then study the effect of using a gluon propagator from lattice simulations of pure SU(2) theory as an input in a potential model for the description of quarkonium, in the case of bottomonium and charmonium. We use, in both cases, a numerical approach to evaluate masses of quarkonium states. The resulting spectra are compared to calculations using the Coulomb plus linear (or Cornell) potential.
