Exploiting non-i.i.d. data towards more robust machine learning algorithms

In the field of machine learning there is a growing interest towards more robust and generalizable algorithms. This is for example important to bridge the gap between the environment in which the training data was collected and the environment where the algorithm is deployed. Machine learning algorithms have increasingly been shown to excel in finding patterns and correlations from data. Determining the consistency of these patterns and for example the distinction between causal correlations and nonsensical spurious relations has proven to be much more difficult. In this paper a regularization scheme is introduced that prefers universal causal correlations. This approach is based on 1) the robustness of causal correlations and 2) the data not being independently and identically distribute (i.i.d.). The scheme is demonstrated with a classification task by clustering the (non-i.i.d.) training set in subpopulations. A non-i.i.d. regularization term is then introduced that penalizes weights that are not invariant over these clusters. The resulting algorithm favours correlations that are universal over the subpopulations and indeed a better performance is obtained on an out-of-distribution test set with respect to a more conventional l_2-regularization.

Ground state properties of interacting Bose polarons

We theoretically investigate the role of multiple impurity atoms on the ground state properties of Bose polarons. The Bogoliubov approximation is applied for the description of the condensate resulting in a Hamiltonian containing terms beyond the Fröhlich approximation. The many-body nature of the impurity atoms is taken into account by extending the many-body description for multiple Fröhlich polarons, revealing the static structure factor of the impurities as the key quantity. Within this formalism various experimentally accessible polaronic properties are calculated such as the energy and the effective mass. These results are examined for system parameters corresponding to two recent experimental realizations of the Bose polaron, one with fermionic impurities and one with bosonic impurities.

Spontaneous Beliaev-Landau scattering out of equilibrium

We investigate Beliaev-Landau scattering in a gas of interacting photons in a coherently driven array of nonlinear dissipative resonators, as described by the 1D driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model. Due to the absence of detailed balance in such an out-of-equilibrium setup, steady-state properties can be much more sensitive to the underlying microscopic dynamics. As the popular truncated Wigner approximation dramatically fails in capturing this physics, we present an alternative approach, based on a systematic expansion beyond the Bogoliubov approximation, which includes the third-order correlation functions in the dynamics. As experimentally accessible signatures of Beliaev-Landau processes, we report a small but nonnegligible correction to the Bogoliubov prediction for the steady-state momentum distribution showing a characteristic series of peaks and dips, as well as non-Gaussian features in the statistics of the cavity output field.

Gutzwiller Monte Carlo approach for a critical dissipative spin model

We use the Gutzwiller Monte Carlo approach to simulate the dissipative XYZ-model in the vicinity of a dissipative phase transition. This approach captures classical spatial correlations together with the full on-site quantum behavior, while neglecting non-local quantum effects. By considering finite two-dimensional lattices of various sizes, we identify a ferromagnetic and two paramagnetic phases, in agreement with earlier studies. The greatly reduced numerical complexity the Gutzwiller Monte Carlo approach facilitates efficient simulation of relatively large lattice sizes. The inclusion of the spatial correlations allows to describe critical behavior which is completely missed by the widely applied Gutzwiller decoupling of the density matrix.

On the robustness of strongly correlated multi-photon states in frustrated driven-dissipative cavity lattices

We present a theoretical study on the robustness of multi-photon states in a frustrated lattice of coupled nonlinear optical cavities, which are described by a driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model. In particular, we focus here on a Lieb lattice with two elementary cells and periodic boundary conditions. Due to the geometric frustration of the lattice, the non-equilibrium steady state can exhibit dark sites with low photon density and strong correlations, ascribable to the population of multi-photon modes. We explore the sensitivity of such strong correlations on the random inhomogeneity of the lattice parameters. We show that the correlations are more sensitive to the inhomogeneity of the cavity frequencies than to the random fluctuations of the hopping strength.

Optically bistable driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard dimer: Gutzwiller approaches and entanglement

We theoretically examine the driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard dimer in the optical bistable regime. Various approximation schemes based on a Gutzwiller mean field decoupling are applied and compared. Depending on the system parameters we show that a decoupling with respect to the real space or to the reciprocal space can be more accurate. The Gutzwiller decoupling is applied both at the level of the density matrix and for the wavefunction during a quantum trajectory simulation. The latter is shown to be a more accurate approximation. A Gaussian approximation for the non-homogeneous anti-bonding mode is also explored. We also show that entanglement in this system is witnessed by squeezing in reciprocal space.

Critical dynamical properties of a first-order dissipative phase transition

We theoretically investigate the critical properties of a single driven-dissipative nonlinear photon mode. In a well-defined thermodynamical limit of large excitation numbers, the exact quantum solution describes a first-order phase transition in the regime where semiclassical theory predicts optical bistability. We study the behavior of the complex spectral gap associated with the Liouvillian superoperator of the corresponding master equation. We show that in this limit the Liouvillian gap vanishes exponentially and that the bimodality of the photon Wigner function disappears. The connection between the considered thermodynamical limit of large photon numbers for the single-mode cavity and the thermodynamical limit of many cavities for a driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard system is discussed.

Quantum entanglement in the spatial symmetry breaking phase transition of a driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard dimer

We theoretically explore quantum correlation properties of a dissipative Bose-Hubbard dimer in presence of a coherent drive. In particular, we focus on the regime where the semiclassical theory predicts a bifurcation with a spontaneous spatial symmetry breaking. The critical behavior in a well defined thermodynamical limit of large excitation numbers is considered and analyzed within a Gaussian approach. The case of a finite boson density is also examined by numerically integrating the Lindblad master equation for the density matrix. We predict the critical behavior around the bifurcation points accompanied with large quantum correlations of the mixed steady-state, in particular exhibiting a peak in the logarithmic entanglement negativity.

Exact steady state of a Kerr resonator with one- and two-photon driving and dissipation: Controllable Wigner-function multimodality and dissipative phase transitions

We present exact results for the steady-state density matrix of a general class of driven-dissipative systems consisting of a nonlinear Kerr resonator in the presence of both coherent (one-photon) and parametric (two-photon) driving and dissipation. Thanks to the analytical solution, obtained via the complex P-representation formalism, we are able to explore any regime, including photon blockade, multiphoton resonant effects, and a mesoscopic regime with large photon density and quantum correlations. We show how the interplay between one- and two-photon driving provides a way to control the multimodality of the Wigner function in regimes where the semiclassical theory exhibits multistability. We also study the emergence of dissipative phase transitions in the thermodynamic limit of large photon numbers.

Truncated correlation hierarchy schemes for driven-dissipative multimode quantum systems

We present a method to describe driven-dissipative multi-mode systems by considering a truncated hierarchy of equations for the correlation functions. We consider two hierarchy truncation schemes with a global cutoff on the correlation order, which is the sum of the exponents of the operators involved in the correlation functions: a 'hard' cutoff corresponding to an expansion around the vacuum, which applies to a regime where the number of excitations per site is small; a 'soft' cutoff which corresponds to an expansion around coherent states, which can be applied for large excitation numbers per site. This approach is applied to describe the bunching-antibunching transition in the driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model for photonic systems. The results have been successfully benchmarked by comparison with calculations based on the corner-space renormalization method in 1D and 2D systems. The regime of validity and strengths of the present truncation methods are critically discussed.

Polaron formation in the vicinity of a narrow Feshbach resonance in atomic and exciton-polariton condensates

The polaronic system consisting of an impurity in a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate is considered in the presence of a narrow Feshbach resonance. For this purpose a coupled-channel model is used, which at the mean field level predicts the formation of quasiparticles that are a superposition of the impurity and the molecular states. The impurity-boson interactions and the coupling between the open and closed channels are then considered weak and a perturbative calculation of the corrections to the mean field results is presented. This allows to examine the properties of the quasiparticles, such as the lifetime and the effective mass. The model is applied to two physical systems: an impurity atom in a Bose-condensed atomic gas in 3D and a spin down lower polariton in a Bose-Einstein condensate of spin up lower polaritons in 2D. The model parameters are linked to the physical parameters by identifying the low energy T-matrix and applying a proper renormalization scheme.

Diagrammatic Monte Carlo study of the acoustic and the BEC polaron

We consider two large polaron systems that are described by a Fröhlich type of Hamiltonian, namely the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) polaron in the continuum and the acoustic polaron in a solid. We present ground-state energies of these two systems calculated with the Diagrammatic Monte Carlo (DiagMC) method and with a Feynman all-coupling approach. The DiagMC method evaluates up to very high order a diagrammatic series for the polaron Green's function. The Feynman all-coupling approach is a variational method that has been used for a wide range of polaronic problems. For the acoustic and BEC polaron both methods provide remarkably similar non-renormalized ground-state energies that are obtained after introducing a finite momentum cutoff. For the renormalized ground-state energies of the BEC polaron, there are relatively large discrepancies between the DiagMC and the Feynman predictions. These differences can be attributed to the renormalization procedure for the contact interaction.
