Challenging computations of Hilbert bases of cones associated with algebraic statistics

In this paper we present two independent computational proofs that the monoid derived from $5\times 5\times 3$ contingency tables is normal, completing the classification by Hibi and Ohsugi. We show that Vlach's vector disproving normality for the monoid derived from $6\times 4\times 3$ contingency tables is the unique minimal such vector up to symmetry. Finally, we compute the full Hilbert basis of the cone associated with the non-normal monoid of the semi-graphoid for $|N|=5$. The computations are based on extensions of the packages LattE-4ti2 and Normaliz.

Koszul homology and syzygies of Veronese subalgebras

A graded K-algebra R has property N_p if it is generated in degree 1, has relations in degree 2 and the syzygies of order less or equal to p on the relations are linear. The Green-Lazarsfeld index of R is the largest p such that it satisfies the property N_p. Our main results assert that (under a mild assumption on the base field K) the c-th Veronese subring of a polynomial ring has Green-Lazarsfeld index greater or equal to c+1. The same conclusion also holds for an arbitrary standard graded algebra, provided c is sufficiently large.

The variety of exterior powers of linear maps

Let $K$ be a field and $V$ and $W$ be $K$-vector spaces of dimension $m$ and $n$. Let $ϕ$ be the canonical map from $Hom(V,W)$ to $Hom(\wedge^t V,\wedge^t W)$. We investigate the Zariski closure $X_t$ of the image $Y_t$ of $ϕ$. In the case $t=\min(m,n)$, $Y_t=X_t$ is the cone over a Grassmannian, but $X_t$ is larger than $Y_t$ for $1<t<\min(m,n)$. We analyze the $G=\GL(V)\times\GL(W)$-orbits in $X_t$ via the corresponding $G$-stable prime ideals. It turns out that they are classified by two numerical invariants, one of which is the rank and the other a related invariant that we call small rank. Surprisingly, the orbits in $X_t\setminus Y_t$ arise from the images $Y_u$ for $u<t$ and simple algebraic operations. In the last section we determine the singular locus of $X_t$. Apart from well-understood exceptional cases, it is formed by the elements of rank $\le 1$ in $Y_t$.

Gröbner bases and Betti numbers of monoidal complexes

In this note we consider monoidal complexes and their associated algebras, called toric face rings. These rings generalize Stanley-Reisner rings and affine monoid algebras. We compute initial ideals of the presentation ideal of a toric face ring, and determine its graded Betti numbers. Our results generalize celebrated theorems of Hochster in combinatorial commutative algebra.

On the integral Caratheodory property

In this note we document the existence of a finitely generated rational cone that is not covered by its unimodular Hilbert subcones, but satisfies the integral Caratheodory property. We explain the algorithms that decide these properties and describe our experimental approach that led to the discovery of the examples.

Cohomology of partially ordered sets and local cohomology of section rings

We study local cohomology of rings of global sections of sheafs on the Alexandrov space of a partially ordered set. We give a criterion for a splitting of the local cohomology groups into summands determined by the cohomology of the poset and the local cohomology of the stalks. The face ring of a rational pointed fan can be considered as the ring of global sections of a flasque sheaf on the face poset of the fan. Thus we obtain a decomposition of the local cohomology of such face rings. Since the Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex is the face ring of a rational pointed fan, our main result can be interpreted as a generalization of Hochster's decomposition of local cohomology of Stanley-Reisner rings.

h-vectors of Gorenstein polytopes

We show that the Ehrhart h-vector of an integer Gorenstein polytope with a regular unimodular triangulation satisfies McMullen's g-theorem; in particular, it is unimodal. This result generalizes a recent theorem of Athanasiadis (conjectured by Stanley) for compressed polytopes. It is derived from a more general theorem on Gorenstein affine normal monoids M: one can factor K[M] (K a field) by a "long" regular sequence in such a way that the quotient is still a normal affine monoid algebra. This technique reduces all questions about the Ehrhart h-vector of P to the Ehrhart h-vector of a Gorenstein polytope Q with exactly one interior lattice point, provided each lattice point in a multiple cP, c in N, can be written as the sum of n lattice points in P. (Up to a translation, the polytope Q belongs to the class of reflexive polytopes considered in connection with mirror symmetry.) If P has a regular unimodular triangulation, then it follows readily that the Ehrhart h-vector of P coincides with the combinatorial h-vector of the boundary complex of a simplicial polytope, and the g-theorem applies.

On the Coefficients of Hilbert Quasipolynomials

The Hilbert function of a module over a positively graded algebra is of quasi-polynomial type (Hilbert--Serre). We derive an upper bound for its grade, i.e. the index from which on its coefficients are constant. As an application, we give a purely algebraic proof of an old combinatorial result (due to Ehrhart, McMullen and Stanley).

On seminormal monoid rings

Given a seminormal affine monoid M we consider several monoid properties of M and their connections to ring properties of the associated affine monoid ring K[M] over a field K. We characterize when K[M] satisfies Serre's condition (S_2) and analyze the local cohomology of K[M]. As an application we present criteria which imply that K[M] is Cohen--Macaulay and we give lower bounds for the depth of K[M]. Finally, the seminormality of an arbitrary affine monoid M is studied with characteristic p methods.

Conic divisor classes over a normal monoid algebra

Let R=K[M] be a normal affine monoid algbera over a field K.Up to isomorphism the conic ideals are exactly the direct summands ofthe extension R^{1/n} of R. We show that the classes of the conic divisorial ideals can be identified with the full-dimensional open cells in a decomposition of a torus naturally associated with M. Furthermore, they can be characterized by the relative compactness of a certain group associated with them. Baetica has given examples of Cohen-Macaulay divisorial ideals that are not conic. Wereview his construction and streamline the arguments somewhat. In the last part of the paper we investigate the multiplicities ofthe conic classes in the decomposition of R^{1/n} as a function of n.This multiplicity turns out to be a quasi-polynomial for all n >= 1 counting the lattice points in the union of the interiors of certain cells of the complex mentioned above. This argument can be used for the computation of the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of R in characteristic p > 0. In addition it yields some assertions about the Hilbert-Kunz function of R.

Polytopes and K-theory

This is an overview of results from our experiment of merging two seemingly unrelated disciplines - higher algebraic K-theory of rings and the theory of lattice polytopes. The usual K-theory is the ``theory of a unit simplex''. A conjecture is proposed on the structure of higher polyhedral K-groups for certain class of polytopes for which the coincidence of Quillen's and Volodin's theories is known.

Initial algebras of determinantal rings, Cohen-Macaulay and Ulrich ideals

We study initial algebras of determinantal rings, defined by minors of generic matrices, with respect to their classical generic point. This approach leads to very short proofs for the structural properties of determinantal rings. Moreover, it allows us to classify their Cohen-Macaulay and Ulrich ideals.

Algebras of minors

Let $X$ be an $n\times m$ matrix of indeterminates over a field $K$ (of sufficiently large characteristic) and $M_t$ the set of $m$-minors of $X$. We consider two objects: (1) the Ress algebra of the polynomial ring $K[X]$ with respect to the ideal $I_t$ generated by $M_t$, and (2) the $A_t$ subalgebra of $K[X]$ generated by $M_t$. Note that $A_t$ is tHE coordinate ring of a Grassmannian if $t=\min(m,n)$; also the cases $t=1$ and $t=m-1=n-1$ are easily understood, since $A_t$ is a polynomial ring over $K$ in these cases. For both objects we compute the divisor class group and the canonical class. In particular we determine the Gorenstein rings among the $A_t$. It turns out that $A_t$ is Gorenstein exactly in the cases listed above and when $t(m+n)=mn$. We use initial methods, based on the straightening law and KRS. They can be applied to other types of determinantal ideals, too. We do this explicitly for generic Hankel matrices.

Canonical modules of Rees algebras

We compute the canonical class of certain Rees algebras. Our formula generalizes that of Herzog and Vasconcelos. Its proof relies on the fact that the formation of the canonical module commutes with subintersections in important cases. As an application we treat the classical determinantal ideals and the corresponding algebras of minors.

Higher polyhedral K-groups

We define higher polyhedral K-groups for commutative rings, starting from the stable groups of elementary automorphisms of polyhedral algebras. Both Volodin's theory and Quillen's + construction are developed. In the special case of algebras associated with unit simplices one recovers the usual algebraic K-groups, while the general case of lattice polytopes reveals many new aspects, governed by polyhedral geometry. This paper is a continuation of [BrG5] (math.KT/0104206) which is devoted to the study of polyhedral aspects of the classical Steinberg relations. The present work explores the polyhedral geometry behind Suslin's well known proof of the coincidence of the classical Volodin's and Quillen's theories. We also determine all K-groups coming from 2-dimensional polytopes.

Unimodular covers of multiples of polytopes

Let P be a d-dimensional lattice polytope. We show that there exists a natural number c_d, only depending on d, such that the multiples cP have a unimodular cover for every natural number c >= c_d. Actually, a subexponential upper bound for c_d is provided, together with an analogous result for unimodular covers of rational cones.

Polyhedral K_2

Using elementary graded automorphisms of polytopal algebras (essentially the coordinate rings of projective toric varieties) polyhedral versions of the group of elementary matrices and the Steinberg and Milnor groups are defined. They coincide with the usual K-theoretic groups in the special case when the polytope is a unit simplex and can be thought of as compact/polytopal substitutes for the tame automorphism groups of polynomial algebras. Relative to the classical case, many new aspects have to be taken into account. We describe these groups explicitly when the underlying polytope is 2-dimensional. Already this low-dimensional case provides interesting classes of groups.
