Loschmidt amplitude spectrum in dynamical quantum phase transitions

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are criticalities in the time evolution of quantum systems and their existence has been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed. However, how the system behaves in the vicinity of DQPT and its connection to physical observables remains an open question. In this work, we introduce the concept of the Loschmidt amplitude spectrum (LAS), which extends the Loscmidt amplitude - the detector of the transition - by considering the overlap of the initial state to all the eigenstates of the prequench Hamiltonian. By analysing the LAS in the integrable transverse-field Ising model, we find that the system undergoes a population redistribution in the momentum space across DQPT. In the quasiparticle picture, all the lower-half k modes are excited when the system is at DQPT. The LAS is also applicable to study the dynamics of non-integrable models where we have investigated the Ising model with next-nearest-neighbour interactions as an example. The time evolution of the system's magnetization is found to be connected to the products of the LAS and there exists a simultaneous overlap of the time-evolved state to pairs of eigenstates of the prequnech Hamiltonian that possess spin configurations of negative magnetization. Our findings provide a better understanding of the characteristics of the out-of-equilibrium system around DQPT.

Pressure-induced enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature in La2O2Bi3AgS6

Charge density wave (CDW) instability is often found in phase diagrams of superconductors such as cuprates and certain transition-metal dichalcogenides. This proximity to superconductivity triggers the question on whether CDW instability is responsible for the pairing of electrons in these superconductors. However, this issue remains unclear and new systems are desired to provide a better picture. Here, we report the temperature-pressure phase diagram of a recently discovered BiS$_2$ superconductor La$_2$O$_2$Bi$_3$AgS$_6$, which shows a possible CDW transition at $T^*\sim$155 K and a superconducting transition at $T_c\sim$1.0 K at ambient pressure, via electrical resistivity measurements. Upon applying pressure, $T^*$ decreases linearly and extrapolates to 0 K at 3.9 GPa. Meanwhile, $T_c$ is enhanced and reaches maximum value of 4.1 K at 3.1 GPa, forming a superconducting dome in the temperature-pressure phase diagram.

Correlations and dynamical quantum phase transitions in an interacting topological insulator

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs), which refer to the criticality in time of a quantum many-body system, have attracted much theoretical and experimental research interest recently. Despite DQPTs are defined and signalled by the non-analyticities in the Loschmidt rate, its interrelation with various correlation measures such as the equilibrium order parameters of the system remains unclear. In this work, by considering the quench dynamics in an interacting topological model, we find that the equilibrium order parameters of the model in general exhibit signatures around the DQPT, in the short time regime. The first extrema of the equilibrium order parameters are connected to the first Loschmidt rate peak. By studying the unequal-time two-point correlation, we also find that the correlation between the nearest neighbors decays while that with neighbors further away builds up as time grows in the non-interacting case, and upon the addition of repulsive intra-cell interactions. On the other hand, the inter-cell interaction tends to suppress the two-site correlations. These findings could provide us insights into the characteristic of the system around DQPTs, and pave the way to a better understanding of the dynamics in non-equilibrium quantum many-body systems.

Novel Approach to Unveil Quantum Phase Transitions Using Fidelity Map

Fidelity approach has been widely used to detect various types of quantum phase transitions, including some that are beyond the Landau symmetry breaking theory, in condensed matter models. However, challenges remain in locating the transition points with precision in several models with unconventional phases such as the quantum spin liquid phase in spin-1 Kitaev-Heisenberg model. In this work, we propose a novel approach, which we named the fidelity map, to detect quantum phase transitions with higher accuracy and sensitivity as compared to the conventional fidelity measures. Our scheme extends the fidelity concept from a single dimension quantity to a multi-dimensional quantity, and use a meta-heuristic algorithm to search for the critical points that globally maximized the fidelity within each phase. We test the scheme in three interacting condensed matter models, namely the spin-1 Kitaev Heisenberg model which consists of the quantum spin liquid phase and the topological Haldane phase, the spin-1/2 XXZ model which possesses a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, and the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model that exhibits a topological quantum phase transition. The result shows that the fidelity map can capture a wide range of phase transitions accurately, thus providing a new tool to study phase transitions in unseen models without prior knowledge of the system's symmetry.

Quantum phase transitions in the spin-1 Kitaev-Heisenberg chain

Recently, it has been proposed that higher-spin analogues of the Kitaev interactions $K>0$ may also occur in a number of materials with strong Hund's and spin-orbit coupling. In this work, we use Lanczos diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods to investigate numerically the $S=1$ Kitaev-Heisenberg model. The ground-state phase diagram and quantum phase transitions are investigated by employing local and nonlocal spin correlations. We identified two ordered phases at negative Heisenberg coupling $J<0$: a~ferromagnetic phase with $\langle S_i^zS_{i+1}^z\rangle>0$ and an intermediate left-left-right-right phase with $\langle S_i^xS_{i+1}^x\rangle\neq 0$. A~quantum spin liquid is stable near the Kitaev limit, while a topological Haldane phase is found for $J>0$.

Discrete time crystal in globally driven interacting quantum systems without disorder

Time crystals in periodically driven systems have initially been studied assuming either the ability to quench the Hamiltonian between different many-body regimes, the presence of disorder or long-range interactions. Here we propose the simplest scheme to observe discrete time crystal dynamics in a one-dimensional driven quantum system of the Ising type with short-range interactions and no disorder. The system is subject only to a periodic kick by a global magnetic field, and no extra Hamiltonian quenching is performed. We analyze the emerging time crystal stabilizing mechanisms via extensive numerics as well as using an analytic approach based on an off-resonant transition model. Due to the simplicity of the driven Ising model, our proposal can be implemented with current experimental platforms including trapped ions, Rydberg atoms, and superconducting circuits.

Detection of topological phases by quasi-local operators

It has been proposed recently by some of the authors that the quantum phase transition of a topological insulator like the SSH model may be detected by the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the reduced density matrix. Here we further extend the scheme of identifying the order parameters by considering the SSH model with the addition of triplet superconductivity. This model has a rich phase diagram due to the competition of the SSH "order" and the Kitaev "order", which requires the introduction of four order parameters to describe the various topological phases. We show how these order parameters can be expressed simply as averages of projection operators on the ground state at certain points deep in each phase and how one can simply obtain the phase boundaries. A scaling analysis in the vicinity of the transition lines is consistent with the quantum Ising universality class.

Nonsymmorphic cubic Dirac point and crossed nodal rings across the ferroelectric phase transition in LiOsO$_3$

Crystalline symmetries can generate exotic band-crossing features, which can lead to unconventional fermionic excitations with interesting physical properties. We show how a cubic Dirac point---a four-fold-degenerate band-crossing point with cubic dispersion in a plane and a linear dispersion in the third direction---can be stabilized through the presence of a nonsymmorphic glide mirror symmetry in the space group of the crystal. Notably, the cubic Dirac point in our case appears on a threefold axis, even though it has been believed previously that such a point can only appear on a sixfold axis. We show that a cubic Dirac point involving a threefold axis can be realized close to the Fermi level in the non-ferroelectric phase of LiOsO$_3$. Upon lowering temperature, LiOsO$_3$ has been shown experimentally to undergo a structural phase transition from the non-ferroelectric phase to the ferroelectric phase with spontaneously broken inversion symmetry. Remarkably, we find that the broken symmetry transforms the cubic Dirac point into three mutually-crossed nodal rings. There also exist several linear Dirac points in the low-energy band structure of LiOsO$_3$, each of which is transformed into a single nodal ring across the phase transition.

Reduced density matrix and order parameters of a topological insulator

It has been recently proposed that the reduced density matrix may be used to derive the order parameter of a condensed matter system. Here we propose order parameters for the phases of a topological insulator, specifically a spinless Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, and consider the effect of short-range interactions. All the derived order parameters and their possible corresponding quantum phases are verified by the entanglement entropy and electronic configuration analysis results. The order parameter appropriate to the topological regions is further proved by calculating the Berry phase under twisted boundary conditions. It is found that the topological non-trivial phase is robust to the introduction of repulsive inter-site interactions, and can appear in the topological trivial parameter region when appropriate interactions are added.

Experimental Determination of the Fermi Surface of Sr3Ir4Sn13

The stannide family of materials A3T4Sn13 (A = La,Sr,Ca, T = Ir,Rh) is interesting due to the interplay between a tunable lattice instability and phonon-mediated superconductivity with Tc ~ 5-7 K. In Sr3Ir4Sn13 a structural transition temperature T* ~ 147 K associated with this instability has been reported, which is believed to result from a superlattice distortion of the high temperature phase on cooling. Here we report the first experimental study of the electronic structure of a member of this material family - Sr3Ir4Sn13 through measurements of quantum oscillations and comparison with density functional theory calculations. Our measurements reveal good agreement with theory using the lattice parameters consistent with a body-centred cubic lattice of symmetry I-43d of the low temperature phase. The study of the fermiology of Sr3Ir4Sn13 we present here should help inform models of multiband superconductivity in the superconducting stannides.

Strong Coupling Superconductivity in the Vicinity of the Structural Quantum Critical Point in (Ca$_x$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$

The family of the superconducting quasi-skutterudites (Ca$_x$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ features a structural quantum critical point at $x_c=0.9$, around which a dome-shaped variation of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ is found. Using specific heat, we probe the normal and the superconducting states of the entire series straddling the quantum critical point. Our analysis indicates a significant lowering of the effective Debye temperature on approaching $x_c$, which we interpret as a result of phonon softening accompanying the structural instability. Furthermore, a remarkably large enhancement of $2Δ/k_BT_c$ and $ΔC/γT_c$ beyond the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) values is found in the vicinity of the structural quantum critical point. The phase diagram of (Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ thus provides a model system to study the interplay between structural quantum criticality and strong electron-phonon coupling superconductivity.

Fidelity susceptibilities in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model

We investigated the fidelity susceptibility in the one-dimension (1D) Hubbard model and the extended Hubbard model at half-filling via the density matrix renormalization group. From the numerical results, we argue that in the 1D Hubbard model, the fidelity susceptibility shows a divergence at two points which is infinitesimally close to the critical point while it is always extensive exactly at the critical point. For the extended Hubbard model, we found that for a properly chosen driving parameter, the fidelity susceptibility is able to reveal the quantum phase transitions between the PS (phase separation)-superconducting, superconducting-CDW (charge-density wave), CDW-SDW(spin-density wave), SDW-PS, CDW-BOW (bond-order wave), and the BOW-SDW phases.

Density Matrix Spectra and Order Parameters in the 1D Extended Hubbard Model

Without any knowledge of the symmetry existing in the system, we derive the exact forms of the order parameters which show long-range correlation in the ground state of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model using a quantum information approach. Our work demonstrates that the quantum information approach can help us to find the explicit form of the order parameter, which cannot be derived systematically via traditional methods in the condensed matter theory.

Spectral function and fidelity susceptibility in quantum critical phenomena

In this paper, we derive a simple equality that relates the spectral function $I(k,ω)$ and the fidelity susceptibility $χ_F$, i.e. $% χ_F=\lim_{η\rightarrow 0}\fracπη I(0, iη)$ with $η$ being the half-width of the resonance peak in the spectral function. Since the spectral function can be measured in experiments by the neutron scattering or the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy(ARPES) technique, our equality makes the fidelity susceptibility directly measurable in experiments. Physically, our equality reveals also that the resonance peak in the spectral function actually denotes a quantum criticality-like point at which the solid state seemly undergoes a significant change.

Construct order parameter from the spectra of mutual information

In this paper, we try to establish a connection between a quantum information concept, i.e. the mutual information, and the conventional order parameter in condensed matter physics. We show that a non-vanishing mutual information at a long distance means the existence of long-range order. By analyzing the entanglement spectra of the reduced density matrix that are used to calculate the mutual information, we show how to find the local order operator used to identify various phases with long-rang order.

Scaling of quantum Zeno dynamics in thermodynamic systems

We study the quantum Zeno effect (QZE) in two many-body systems, namely the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model and the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model, coupled to a central qubit. Our result shows that in order to observe QZE in the Ising model, the frequency of the projective measurement should be of comparable order to that of the system sizes. The same criterion also holds in the symmetry broken phase of the LMG model while in the model's polarized phase, the QZE can be easily observed.
