Shapes of leading tunnelling trajectories for single-electron molecular ionization

Based on the geometrical approach to tunnelling by P.D. Hislop and I.M. Sigal [Memoir. AMS 78, No. 399 (1989)], we introduce the concept of a leading tunnelling trajectory. It is then proven that leading tunnelling trajectories for single-active-electron models of molecular tunnelling ionization (i.e., theories where a molecular potential is modelled by a single-electron multi-centre potential) are linear in the case of short range interactions and "almost" linear in the case of long range interactions. The results are presented on both the formal and physically intuitive levels. Physical implications of the obtained results are discussed.

Quantum mechanics of a free particle from properties of the Dirac delta function

Based on the assumption that the probability density of finding a free particle is independent of position, we infer the form of the eigenfunction for the free particle, $\bra{x} p > = \exp(ipx/\hbar)/\sqrt{2π\hbar}$. The canonical commutation relation between the momentum and position operators and the Ehrenfest theorem in the free particle case are derived solely from differentiation of the delta function and the form of $\bra{x} p >$.

Enhancement and suppression of tunneling by controlling symmetries of a potential barrier

We present a class of 2D systems which shows a counterintuitive property that contradicts a semi classical intuition: A 2D quantum particle "prefers" tunneling through a barrier rather than traveling above it. Viewing the one particle 2D system as the system of two 1D particles, it is demonstrated that this effect occurs due to a specific symmetry of the barrier that forces excitations of the interparticle degree of freedom that, in turn, leads to the appearance of an effective potential barrier even though there is no "real" barrier. This phenomenon cannot exist in 1D.

Photoelectron spectra in strong-field ionization by a high frequency field

We analyze atomic photoelectron momentum distributions induced by bichromatic and monochromatic laser fields within the strong field approximation (SFA), separable Coulomb-Volkov approximation (SCVA), and ab initio treatment. We focus on the high frequency regime -- the smallest frequency used is larger than the ionization potential of the atom. We observe a remarkable agreement between the ab initio and velocity gauge SFA results while the velocity gauge SCVA fails to agree. Reasons of such a failure are discussed.

Adaptation of the Modified Adiabatic Approximation to Strong Field Ionization

Savichev's modified adiabatic approximation [Sov. Phys. JETP 73, 803 (1991)] is used to obtain a general form of a quantum-mechanical amplitude of ionization by a low-frequency laser field. The method possesses only one requirement that the frequency of the laser field must be low. Connections of the obtained result with the quasi-classical approximation and other previous investigations are discussed.

Two-electron ionization in strong laser fields below intensity threshold: signatures of attosecond timing in correlated spectra

We develop an analytical model of correlated two-electron ionization in strong infrared laser fields. The model includes all relevant interactions between the electrons, the laser field, and the ionic core nonperturbatively. We focus on the deeply quantum regime, where the energy of the active electron driven by the laser field is insufficient to collisionally ionize the parent ion, and the assistance of the laser field is required to create a doubly charged ion. In this regime, the electron-electron and the electron-ion interactions leave distinct footprints in the correlated two-electron spectra, recording the mutual dynamics of the escaping electrons.

Classical calculation of high-order harmonic generation of atomic and molecular gases in intense laser fields

Based upon our previous works (Eur.Phys.J.D 6, 319(1999); Chin.Phys.Lett. 18, 236(2001)), we develop a classical approach to calculate the high-order harmonic generation of the laser driven atoms and molecules. The Coulomb singularities in the system have been removed by a regularization procedure. Action-angle variables have been used to generate the initial microcanonical distribution which satisfies the inversion symmetry of the system. The numerical simulation show, within a proper laser intensity, a harmonic plateau with only odd harmonics appears. At higher intensities, the spectra become noisier because of the existence of chaos. With further increase in laser intensity, ionization takes place, and the high-order harmonics disappear. Thus chaos introduces noise in the spectra, and ionization suppresses the harmonic generation, with the onset of the ionization follows the onset of chaos.

Chaotic atomic population oscillations between two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with time-dependent asymmetric trap potential

We have investigated the chaotic atomic population oscillations between two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) with time-dependent asymmetric trap potential. In the perturbative regime, the population oscillations can be described by the Duffing equation, and the chaotic oscillations near the separatrix solution are analyzed. The sufficient-necessary conditions for stable oscillations depend on the physical parameters and initial conditions sensitively. The first-order necessary condition indicates that the Melnikov function is equal to zero, so the stable oscillations are Melnikov chaotic. For the ordinary parameters and initial conditions, the chaotic dynamics is simulated with numerical calculation. If the damping is absent, with the increasing of the trap asymmetry, the regular oscillations become chaotic gradually, the corresponding stroboscopic Poincare sections (SPS) vary from a single island to more islands, and then the chaotic sea. For the completely chaotic oscillations, the long-term localization disappears and the short-term localization can be changed from one of the BECs to the other through the route of Rabi oscillation. When there exists damping, the stationary chaos disappears, the transient chaos is a common phenomenon before regular stable frequency locked oscillations. And proper damping can keep localization long-lived.
