423.7 + 426.5 Tb/s GMI Bi-Directional HCF Transmission

We demonstrate OESCL-band same-wavelength bi-directional transmission over 60 km HCF with 42.5 THz bandwidth, achieving GMIs comparable with the highest unidirectional SMF data-rates in both directions, with an aggregate of 423.7 + 426.5 Tb/s.

On the Feasibility of SCL-Band Transmission over G.654.E-Compliant Long-Haul Fibre Links

We demonstrate the first SCL-band long-haul transmission using G.654.E-compliant fibre, achieving 100.8 Tb/s (GMI) over 1552 km, despite its 1520 nm cutoff wavelength. Due to the fibre's ultra-low loss and low nonlinearity, the achievable-information-rate with lumped amplification is comparable to that of G.652.D-compliant fibre links with distributed-Raman-amplification.

Multi-band programmable gain Raman amplifier

Optical communication systems, operating in C-band, are reaching their theoretically achievable capacity limits. An attractive and economically viable solution to satisfy the future data rate demands is to employ the transmission across the full low-loss spectrum encompassing O, E, S, C and L band of the single mode fibers (SMF). Utilizing all five bands offers a bandwidth of up to $\sim$53.5THz (365nm) with loss below 0.4dB/km. A key component in realizing multi-band optical communication systems is the optical amplifier. Apart from having an ultra-wide gain profile, the ability of providing arbitrary gain profiles, in a controlled way, will become an essential feature. The latter will allow for signal power spectrum shaping which has a broad range of applications such as the maximization of the achievable information rate X distance product, the elimination of static and lossy gain flattening filters (GFF) enabling a power efficient system design, and the gain equalization of optical frequency combs. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a multi-band (S+C+L) programmable gain optical amplifier using only Raman effects and machine learning. The amplifier achieves >1000 programmable gain profiles within the range from 3.5 to 30 dB, in an ultra-fast way and a very low maximum error of 1.6e-2 dB/THz over an ultra-wide bandwidth of 17.6-THz (140.7-nm).

Huffman-Coded Sphere Shaping for Extended-Reach Single-Span Links

Huffman-coded sphere shaping (HCSS) is an algorithm for finite-length probabilistic constellation shaping, which provides nearly optimal energy efficiency at low implementation complexity. In this paper, we experimentally study the nonlinear performance of HCSS employing dual-polarization 64-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (DP-64QAM) in an extended reach single-span link comprising 200 km of standard single mode fiber (SSMF). We investigate the effects of shaping sequence length, dimensionality of symbol mapping, and shaping rate. We determine that the naïve approach of Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution matching - which is optimal in the additive white Gaussian noise channel - provides a maximum achievable information rate gain of 0.18 bits/4D-symbol in the infinite length regime. Conversely, HCSS can achieve a gain of 0.37 bits/4Dsymbol using amplitude sequence lengths of 32, which may be implemented without multiplications, using integer comparison and addition operations only. Coded system performance, with a net data rate of approximately 425 Gb/s for both shaped and uniform inputs, is also analyzed.
