Comparing the dynamics of diagonal and general Bianchi IX spacetime

We make comparison of the dynamics of the diagonal and nondiagonal Bianchi IX models in the evolution towards the cosmological singularity. Apart from the original variables, we use the Hubble normalized ones commonly applied in the examination of the dynamics of homogeneous models. Applying the dynamical systems method leads to the result that in both cases the continuous space of critical points is higher dimensional and they are of the nonhyperbolic type. This is a generic feature of the dynamics of both cases and seems to be independent on the choice of phase space variables. The topologies of the corresponding critical spaces are quite different. We conjecture that the nondiagonal case may carry a new type of chaos different from the one specific to the usually examined diagonal one.

Structures arising in the asymptotic dynamics of the Bianchi IX model

We present the analyses of the asymptotic evolution of the general Bianchi IX spacetime using Hamiltonian formulation. The dynamics reveals the existence of special structures, which we call wiggles, in the physical phase space. The wiggles are different from the spikes known in the context of evolution of some spacetime models towards gravitational singularities. Our results may be used as starting point in the examination of wiggles at the quantum level.

Do spikes persist in a quantum treatment of spacetime singularities?

The classical approach to spacetime singularities leads to a simplified dynamics in which spatial derivatives become unimportant compared to time derivatives, and thus each spatial point essentially becomes uncoupled from its neighbors. This uncoupled dynamics leads to sharp features (called "spikes") as follows: particular spatial points follow an exceptional dynamical path that differs from that of their neighbors, with the consequence that, in the neighborhood of these exceptional points, the spatial profile becomes ever more sharp. Spikes are consequences of the BKL-type oscillatory evolution towards generic singularities of spacetime. Do spikes persist when the spacetime dynamics is treated using quantum mechanics? To address this question, we treat a Hamiltonian system that describes the dynamics of the approach to the singularity and consider how to quantize that system. We argue that this particular system is best treated using an affine quantization approach (rather than the more familiar methods of canonical quantization) and we set up the formalism needed for this treatment. Our investigation, based on this affine approach, shows the nonexistence of quantum spikes.

Level spacing distribution for the prototype of the Bianchi IX model

Our results concern quantum chaos of the vacuum Bianchi IX model. We apply the equilateral triangle potential well approximation to the potential of the Bianchi IX model to solve the eigenvalue problem for the physical Hamiltonian. Such approximation is well satisfied in vicinity of the cosmic singularity. Level spacing distribution of the eigenvalues is studied with and without applying the unfolding procedure. In both cases, the obtained distributions are qualitatively described by Brody's distribution with the parameter $β\approx0.3$, revealing some sort of the level repulsion. The observed repulsion may reflect chaotic nature of the classical dynamics of the Bianchi IX universe. However, full understanding of this effects will require examination of the Bianchi IX model with the exact potential.

Bianchi IX model: Reducing phase space

The mathematical structure of higher-dimensional physical phase spaces of the nondiagonal Bianchi IX model is analyzed in the neighborhood of the cosmological singularity by using dynamical system methods. Critical points of the Hamiltonian equations appear at infinities and are of a nonhyperbolic type, which is a generic feature of the considered singular dynamics. The reduction of the kinematical symplectic 2-form to the constraint surface enables the determination of the physical Hamiltonian. This procedure lowers the dimensionality of the dynamics arena. The presented analysis of the phase space is based on canonical transformations. We test our method for the specific subspace of the physical phase space. The obtained results encourage further examination of the dynamics within our approach.

Quantum states of the bouncing universe

In this paper we study quantum dynamics of the bouncing cosmological model. We focus on the model of the flat Friedman-Robertson-Walker universe with a free scalar field. The bouncing behavior, which replaces classical singularity, appears due to the modification of general relativity along the methods of loop quantum cosmology. We show that there exist a unitary transformation that enables to describe the system as a free particle with Hamiltonian equal to canonical momentum. We examine properties of the various quantum states of the Universe: boxcar state, standard coherent state, and soliton-like state, as well as Schr{ö}dinger's cat states constructed from these states. Characteristics of the states such as quantum moments and Wigner functions are investigated. We show that each of these states have, for some range of parameters, a proper semiclassical limit fulfilling the correspondence principle. Decoherence of the superposition of two universes is described and possible interpretations in terms of triad orientation and Belinsky-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz conjecture are given. Some interesting features regarding the area of the negative part of the Wigner function have emerged.

Gaussian state for the bouncing quantum cosmology

We present results concerning propagation of the Gaussian state across the cosmological quantum bounce. The reduced phase space quantization of loop quantum cosmology is applied to the Friedman-Robertson-Walker universe with a free massless scalar field. Evolution of quantum moments of the canonical variables is investigated. The covariance turns out to be a monotonic function so it may be used as an evolution parameter having quantum origin. We show that for the Gaussian state the Universe is least quantum at the bounce. We propose explanation of this counter-intuitive feature using the entropy of squeezing. The obtained time dependence of entropy is in agreement with qualitative predictions based on von Neumann entropy for mixed states. We show that, for the considered Gaussian state, semiclassicality is preserved across the bounce, so there is no cosmic forgetfulness.

Towards solving generic cosmological singularity problem

The big bounce transition of the quantum FRW model in the setting of loop quantum cosmology is presented. We determine the physical self-adjoint Hamiltonian generating the dynamics. It is used to define, via the Stone theorem, an evolution operator. We examine properties of expectation values of physical observables in the process of the quantum big bounce transition. The dispersion of observables are studied in the context of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. We suggest that the real nature of the bounce may become known only after we quantize the Belinskii-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz scenario, which concerns the generic cosmological singularity.

Evolution in bouncing quantum cosmology

We present the method of describing an evolution in quantum cosmology in the framework of the reduced phase space quantization of loop cosmology. We apply our method to the flat Friedman-Robertson-Walker model coupled to a massless scalar field. We identify the physical quantum Hamiltonian that is positive-definite and generates globally an unitary evolution of considered quantum system. We examine properties of expectation values of physical observables in the process of the quantum big bounce transition. The dispersion of evolved observables are studied for the Gaussian state. Calculated relative fluctuations enable an examination of the semi-classicality conditions and possible occurrence of the cosmic forgetfulness. Preliminary estimations based on the cosmological data suggest that there was no cosmic amnesia. Presented results are analytical, and numerical computations are only used for the visualization purposes. Our method may be generalized to sophisticated cosmological models including the Bianchi type universes.

Quantum of volume in de Sitter space

We apply the nonstandard loop quantum cosmology method to quantize a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological model with a free scalar field and the cosmological constant $Λ>0$. Modification of the Hamiltonian in terms of loop geometry parametrized by a length $λ$ introduces a scale dependence of the model. The spectrum of the volume operator is discrete and depends on $Λ$. Relating quantum of the volume with an elementary lattice cell leads to an explicit dependence of $Λ$ on $λ$. Based on this assumption, we investigate the possibility of interpreting $Λ$ as a running constant.

Bianchi I model in terms of nonstandard loop quantum cosmology: Quantum dynamics

We analyze the quantum Bianchi I model in the setting of the nonstandard loop quantum cosmology. Elementary observables are used to quantize the volume operator. The spectrum of the volume operator is bounded from below and discrete. The discreteness may imply a foamy structure of spacetime at semiclassical level. The results are described in terms of a free parameter specifying loop geometry to be determined in astro-cosmo observations. An evolution of the quantum model is generated by the so-called true Hamiltonian, which enables an introduction of a time parameter valued in the set of all real numbers.

Cosmological Big Bounce Transition

We analyze the big bounce transition of the quantum FRW model in the setting of the nonstandard loop quantum cosmology (LQC). Elementary observables are used to quantize compound observables. The spectrum of the energy density operator is bounded and continuous. The spectrum of the volume operator is bounded from below and discrete. It has equally distant levels defining a quantum of the volume. The discreteness may imply a foamy structure of spacetime at semiclassical level which may be detected in astro-cosmo observations. The nonstandard LQC method has a free parameter that should be fixed in some way to specify the big bounce transition.

Observables for FRW model with cosmological constant in the framework of loop cosmology

We consider a flat cosmological model with a free massless scalar field and the cosmological constant $Λ$ in the framework of loop quantum cosmology. The scalar field plays the role of an intrinsic time. We apply the reduced phase space approach. The dynamics of the model is solved analytically. We identify elementary observables and their algebra. The compound physical observables like the volume and the energy density of matter field are analysed. Both compound observables are bounded and oscillate in the $Λ<0$ case. The energy density is bounded and oscillates in the $Λ>0$ case. However, the volume is unbounded from above, but periodic. The difference between standard and nonstandard loop quantum cosmology is described.

Turning big bang into big bounce: II. Quantum dynamics

We analyze the big bounce transition of the quantum FRW model in the setting of the nonstandard loop quantum cosmology (LQC). Elementary observables are used to quantize composite observables.

Dirac quantization of membrane in time dependent orbifold

We present quantum theory of a membrane propagating in the vicinity of a time dependent orbifold singularity. The dynamics of a membrane, with the parameters space topology of a torus, winding uniformly around compact dimension of the embedding spacetime is mathematically equivalent to the dynamics of a closed string in a flat FRW spacetime. The construction of the physical Hilbert space of a membrane makes use of the kernel space of self-adjoint constraint operators. It is a subspace of the representation space of the constraints algebra. There exist non-trivial quantum states of a membrane evolving across the singularity.

The minimum length problem of loop quantum cosmology

The appearance of the big bounce (BB) in the evolution of the universe is analyzed in the setting of loop quantum cosmology (LQC). Making use of an idea of a minimum length turns classical Big Bang into BB. We argue why the spectrum of the kinematical area operator of loop quantum gravity cannot be used for the determination of this length. We find that the fundamental length, at the present stage of development of LQC, is a free parameter of this model.

Non-standard loop quantum cosmology

We present results concerning the nature of the cosmological big bounce(BB) transition within the loop geometry underlying loop quantum cosmology (LQC). Our canonical quantization method is an alternative to the standard LQC. An evolution parameter we use has clear interpretation both at classical and quantum levels. The physical volume operator has discrete spectrum which is bounded from below. The minimum gap in the spectrum defines a quantum of the volume. The spectra of operators are parametrized by a free parameter to be determined.

Bianchi I model in terms of nonstandard loop quantum cosmology: Classical dynamics

The cosmological singularities of the Bianchi I universe are analyzed in the setting of loop geometry underlying the loop quantum cosmology. We solve the Hamiltonian constraint of the theory and find the Lie algebra of elementary observables. Physical compound observables are defined in terms of elementary ones. Modification of classical theory by holonomy around a loop removes the singularities. However, our model has a free parameter that cannot be determined within our method. Testing the model by the data of observational cosmology may be possible after quantization of our modified classical theory.
