Partonic quasi-distributions of the pion in chiral quark models

The evaluation of partonic distributions presents a challenge for QCD, and in particular for its Euclidean lattice realization. Recently, objects called quasi-distributions (which become standard distributions in a limit of the longitudinal momentum of the target hadron going to infinity) have been proposed. We present a non-perturbative, dynamical evaluation of the quark quasi-distribution amplitude (QDA) of the pion in the framework of chiral quark models (the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model and the spectral quark model). We arrive at simple but nontrivial analytic expressions, where the dependence on the longitudinal momentum, the momentum fraction, or the transverse-momentum (for the unintegrated objects) can be explicitly assessed. For the parton distribution amplitude (PDA), we carry out the necessary QCD evolution from the constituent quark model scale to higher scales accessible on the lattice, and compare favorably to the LaMET data.

Longitudinal decorrelation measures of flow magnitude and event-plane angles in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions

We discuss the forward-backward correlations of harmonic flow in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), applying standard multibin measures, as well as proposed here new measures. We illustrate the methods with hydrodynamic model simulations based on event-by-event initial conditions from the wounded quark model with asymmetric rapidity emission profiles. Within the model we examine independently the event-plane angle and the flow magnitude decorrelations. We find specific hierarchy between various flow decorrelation measures and confirm certain factorization relations. We find qualitative agreement of the model and the data from the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations.

Signatures of $α$ clustering in ultra-relativistic collisions with light nuclei

We explore possible observable signatures of $α$ clustering of light nuclei in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions involving ${}^{7,9}$Be, ${}^{12}$C, and ${}^{16}$O. The clustering leads to specific spatial correlations of the nucleon distributions in the ground state, which are manifest in the earliest stage of the ultra-high energy reaction. The formed initial state of the fireball is sensitive to these correlations, and the effect influences, after the collective evolution of the system, the hadron production in the final stage. Specifically, we study effects on the harmonic flow in collisions of light clustered nuclei with a heavy target (${}^{208}$Pb), showing that measures of the elliptic flow are sensitive to clusterization in ${}^{7,9}$Be, whereas triangular flow is sensitive to clusterization in ${}^{12}$C and ${}^{16}$O. Specific predictions are made for model collisions at the CERN SPS energies. In another exploratory development we also examine the proton-beryllium collisions, where the $3/2^-$ ground state of ${}^{7,9}$Be nucleus is polarized by an external magnetic field. Clusterization leads to multiplicity distributions of participant nucleons which depend on the orientation of the polarization with respect to the collision axis, as well as on the magnetic number of the state. The obtained effects on multiplicities reach a factor of a few for collisions with a large number of participant nucleons.

Nonperturbative partonic quasidistributions of the pion from chiral quark models

We evaluate nonperturbatively the quark quasidistribution amplitude and the valence quark quasidistribution function of the pion in the framework of chiral quark models, namely the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model and the Spectral Quark Model. We arrive at simple analytic expressions, where the nonperturbative dependence on the longitudinal momentum of the pion can be explicitly assessed. The model results for the quark quasidistribution amplitude of the pion compare favorably to the data obtained from the Euclidean lattice simulations. The quark distribution amplitude, arising in the limit of infinite longitudinal momentum of the pion, agrees, after suitable QCD evolution, to the recent data extracted from Euclidean lattices, as well as to the old data from transverse lattice simulations.

Hollowness in pp scattering at the LHC

We examine how the effect of hollowness in pp scattering at the LHC (minimum of the inelasticity profile at zero impact parameter) depends on modeling of the phase of the elastic scattering amplitude as a function of the momentum transfer. We study the cases of the constant phase, the Bailly, and the so called standard parameterizations. It is found that the 2D hollowness holds in the first two cases, whereas the 3D hollowness is a robust effect, holding for all explored cases.

Transverse Momentum Fluctuations and Correlations

We study fluctuations and correlations of the average transverse momentum of particles emitted in heavy-ion collisions. Fluctuations of the average transverse momentum are related to event-by-event fluctuations of the size and entropy of the initial source. Hydrodynamic calculations using a Glauber model with quark degrees of freedom reproduce the data. We study correlations of the average transverse momentum in different rapidity bins. We propose a definition of the observable that can be directly related to correlations of the collective flow variables.

Statistical moments in superposition models and strongly intensive measures

First, we present a concise glossary of formulas for composition of standard, cumulant, factorial, and factorial cumulant moments in superposition (compound) models, where final particles are created via independent emission from a collection of sources. Explicit mathematical formulas for the composed moments are given to all orders. We discuss the composition laws for various types of moments via the generating-function methods and list the formulas for the unfolding of the unwanted fluctuations. Second, the technique is applied to the difference of the scaled multiplicities of two particle types. This allows us for a systematic derivation and a simple algebraic interpretation of the so-called strongly intensive fluctuation measures. With the help of the formalism we obtain several new strongly intensive measures involving higher-rank moments. The reviewed as well as the new results may be useful in investigations of mechanisms of particle production and event-by-event fluctuations in high-energy nuclear and hadronic collisions, and in particular in the search for signatures of the QCD phase transition at a finite baryon density.

Hollowness in pp scattering

It is argued that the hollowness effect (depletion in the absorptive part of the scattering cross section at small values of the impact parameter) in the proton-proton scattering at the the LHC energies finds its origin in the quantum nature of the process, resulting in large values of the real part of the eikonal phase. The effect cannot be reconciled with an incoherent superposition of the absorption from the proton constituents, thus suggests the change of this basic paradigm of high-energy scattering.

Forward-backward multiplicity correlations at the LHC from independent sources

It is argued that the superposition approach, where partons are independently emitted from longitudinally extended sources in the early stage, is fully compatible with the experimental results for the forward-backward multiplicity correlations in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76 \textrm{ TeV}$. The pertinent correlation analysis is based on the PhD Thesis of Ref. [1], which includes an unpublished analysis of data taken by the ALICE Collaboration. Our calculations show that in the experimentally covered pseudorapidity range $Δη=1.2$, the initial sources in the backward and forward bins are maximally correlated, which complies to the string-like interpretation of the underlying early-stage production mechanism.

Proton-proton hollowness at the LHC from inverse scattering

Parameterizations of the pp scattering data at the LHC collision energies indicate a hollow in the inelasticity profile of the pp interaction, with less absorption for head-on collisions than at a non-zero impact parameter. We show that some qualitatively unnoticed features may be unveiled by a judicious application of the inverse scattering problem in the eikonal approximation and interpre- tation within an optical potential model. The hollowness effect is magnifed in a 3D picture of the optical potential, and will presumably be enhanced at yet higher energies. Moreover, in 3D it sets in at much smaller energies than at the LHC. We argue that hollowness in the impact parameter is a quantum effect, relying on the build-up of the real part of the eikonal scattering phase and its possible passage through $π/2$. We also show that it precludes models of inelastic collisions where inelasticity is obtained by naive folding of partonic densities.

Transverse momentum fluctuations in ultrarelativistic Pb+Pb and p+Pb collisions with wounded quarks

We analyze the phenomenon of size-flow transmutation in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions in a model where the initial size fluctuations are driven by the wounded quarks and the collectivity is provided by viscous hydrodynamics. It is found that the model properly reproduces the data for the transverse momentum fluctuations measured for Pb+Pb collisions at 2.76TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. The agreement holds for a remarkably wide range of centralities, from 0-5% up to 70-80%, and displays a departure from a simple scaling with $(dN_{\rm ch}/dη)^{1/2}$ in the form seen in the data. The overall agreement in the model with wounded quarks is significantly better than with nucleon participants. This feature joins the previously-found wounded quark multiplicity scaling in the argumentation in favor of subnucleonic degrees of freedom in the early dynamics. We also examine in detail the correlations between measures of the initial size and final average transverse momentum of hadrons. Predictions are made for the transverse momentum fluctuations in p+Pb collisions at 5.02TeV.

Thermal shifts, fluctuations, and missing states

Thermal shifts and fluctuations at finite temperature below the deconfinement crossover from hadronic matter to the quark-gluon plasma provide a viable way to search for missing states with given quantum numbers in the hadronic spectrum. We analyze three realizations of the hadron resonance gas model in the light quark (uds) sector: the states from the Particle Data Group tables with or without width and from the Relativized Quark Model. We elaborate on the meaning of hadronic completeness and thermodynamical equivalence on the light of lattice QCD trace anomaly, heavy quark entropy shift and baryon, charge and strangeness susceptibilities.

Limits on hadron spectrum from bulk medium properties

We bring up the fact that the bulk thermal properties of the hadron gas, as measured on the lattice, preclude a very fast rising of the number of resonance states in the QCD spectrum, as assumed by the Hagedorn hypothesis, unless a substantial repulsion between hadronic resonances is present. If the Hagedorn growth continued above masses ~1.8 GeV, then the thermodynamic functions would noticeably depart from the measured lattice values at temperatures above 140 MeV, just below the transition temperature to quark-gluon plasma.

Wounded quarks at the LHC

We review the results of the wounded quark model, with a stress on eccentricity observables in small systems. A new element is a presentation of symmetric cumulants for the elliptic and triangular flow correlations, obtained in the wounded-quark approach.

Longitudinal correlations in the initial stages of ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions

In this talk we review some of our results for the longitudinal correlations in connection with recent experimental data, in particular for the {\em torque} effect and for the two-particle correlations in pseudorapidity, $C(η_1,η_2)$. The model framework involves event-by-event fluctuations of the initial conditions, followed with 3D viscous hydrodynamic evolution and statistical hadronization.

Wounded quarks in A+A, p+A, and p+p collisions

We explore predictions of the wounded quark model for particle production and properties of the initial state formed in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. The approach is applied uniformly to A+A collisions in a wide collision energy range, as well as for p+A and p+p collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We find that generically the predictions from wounded quarks for such features as eccentricities or initial sizes are close (within 15\%) to predictions of the wounded nucleon model with an amended binary component. A larger difference is found for the size in p+Pb system, where the wounded quark model yields a smaller (more compact) initial fireball than the standard wounded nucleon model. The inclusion of subnucleonic degrees of freedom allows us to analyze p+p collisions in an analogous way, with predictions that can be used in further collective evolution. The approximate linear dependence of particle production in A+A collisions on the number of wounded quarks, as found in previous studies, makes the approach based on wounded quarks natural. Importantly, at the LHC energies we find approximate uniformity in particle production from wounded quarks, where at a given collision energy per nucleon pair similar production of initial entropy per source is needed to explain the particle production from p+p collisions up to A+A collisions. We also discuss the sensitivity of the wounded quark model predictions to distribution of quarks in nucleons, distribution of nucleons in nuclei, and to the quark-quark inelasticity profile in the impact parameter. In our procedure, the quark-quark inelasticity profile is chosen in such a way that the experiment-based parametrization of the proton-proton inelasticity profile is properly reproduced. The parameters of the overlaid multiplicity distribution is fixed from p+p and p+Pb data.

Rapidity fluctuations in the initial state

We analyze two-particle pseudorapidity correlations in a simple model, where strings of fluctuating length are attached to wounded nucleons. The obtained straightforward formulas allow us to understand the anatomy of the correlations, i.e., to identify the component due to the fluctuation of the number of wounded nucleons and the contribution from the string length fluctuations. Our results reproduce qualitatively and semiquantitatively the basic features of the recent correlation measurements at the LHC.
