A soft-photon theorem for the Maxwell-Lorentz system

For the coupled system of classical Maxwell-Lorentz equations we show that the quantities \begin{equation*} \mathfrak{F}(\hat x, t)=\lim_{|x|\to \infty} |x|^2 F(x,t), \quad \mathcal{F}(\hat k, t)=\lim_{|k|\to 0} |k| \widehat{F}(k,t), \end{equation*} where $F$ is the Faraday tensor, $\hat{F}$ its Fourier transform in space and $\hat{x}:=\frac{x}{|x|}$, are independent of $t$. We combine this observation with the scattering theory for the Maxwell-Lorentz system due to Komech and Spohn, which gives the asymptotic decoupling of $F$ into the scattered radiation $F_{\mathrm{sc},\pm}$ and the soliton field $F_{v_{\pm\infty}}$ depending on the asymptotic velocity $v_{\pm\infty}$ of the electron at large positive (+), resp. negative (-) times. This gives a soft-photon theorem of the form \begin{equation*} \mathcal{F}_{\text{sc},+}(\hat{k}) - \mathcal{F}_{\text{sc},-}(\hat{k})= -( \mathcal{F}_{v_{+\infty}}(\hat{k})-\mathcal{F}_{v_{-\infty}}(\hat{k})), \end{equation*} and analogously for $\mathfrak{F}$, which links the low-frequency part of the scattered radiation to the change of the electron's velocity. Implications for the infrared problem in QED are discussed in the Conclusions.

A mechanism for holography for non-interacting fields on anti-de Sitter spacetimes

In the setting of non-interacting Klein-Gordon fields on asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes, we show that algebras of observables localized in a neighborhood of the boundary are subalgebras of a boundary algebra. The underlying mechanism is directly related to holography for classical fields. In particular, the proof relies on unique continuation theorems at the conformal boundary.

Infraparticles with superselected direction of motion in two-dimensional conformal field theory

Particle aspects of two-dimensional conformal field theories are investigated, using methods from algebraic quantum field theory. The results include asymptotic completeness in terms of (counterparts of) Wigner particles in any vacuum representation and the existence of (counterparts of) infraparticles in any charged irreducible product representation of a given chiral conformal field theory. Moreover, an interesting interplay between the infraparticle's direction of motion and the superselection structure is demonstrated in a large class of examples. This phenomenon resembles the electron's momentum superselection expected in quantum electrodynamics.

From Faddeev-Kulish to LSZ. Towards a non-perturbative description of colliding electrons

In a low energy approximation of the massless Yukawa theory (Nelson model) we derive a Faddeev-Kulish type formula for the scattering matrix of $N$ electrons and reformulate it in LSZ terms. To this end, we perform a decomposition of the infrared finite Dollard modifier into clouds of real and virtual photons, whose infrared divergencies mutually cancel. We point out that in the original work of Faddeev and Kulish the clouds of real photons are omitted, and consequently their scattering matrix is ill-defined on the Fock space of free electrons. To support our observations, we compare our final LSZ expression for $N=1$ with a rigorous non-perturbative construction due to Pizzo. While our discussion contains some heuristic steps, they can be formulated as clear-cut mathematical conjectures.

Coulomb scattering in the massless Nelson model III. Ground state wave functions and non-commutative recurrence relations

Let $H_{P,σ}$ be the single-electron fiber Hamiltonians of the massless Nelson model at total momentum $P$ and infrared cut-off $σ>0$. We establish detailed regularity properties of the corresponding $n$-particle ground state wave functions $f^n_{P,σ}$ as functions of $P$ and $σ$. In particular, we show that \[ |\partial_{P^j}f^{n}_{P,σ}(k_1,\ldots, k_n)|, \ \ |\partial_{P^j} \partial_{P^{j'}} f^{n}_{P,σ}(k_1,\ldots, k_n)| \leq \frac{1}{\sqrt{n!}} \frac{(cλ_0)^n}{σ^{δ_{λ_0}}} \prod_{i=1}^n\frac{ χ_{[σ,κ)}(k_i)}{|k_i|^{3/2}}, \] where $c$ is a numerical constant, $λ_0\mapsto δ_{λ_0}$ is a positive function of the maximal admissible coupling constant which satisfies $\lim_{λ_0\to 0}δ_{λ_0}=0$ and $χ_{[σ,κ)}$ is the (approximate) characteristic function of the energy region between the infrared cut-off $σ$ and the ultraviolet cut-off $κ$. While the analysis of the first derivative is relatively straightforward, the second derivative requires a new strategy. By solving a non-commutative recurrence relation we derive a novel formula for $f^n_{P,σ}$ with improved infrared properties. In this representation $\partial_{P^{j'}}\partial_{P^{j}}f^n_{P,σ}$ is amenable to sharp estimates obtained by iterative analytic perturbation theory in part II of this series of papers. The bounds stated above are instrumental for scattering theory of two electrons in the Nelson model, as explained in part I of this series.

Asymptotic observables in gapped quantum spin systems

This paper gives a construction of certain asymptotic observables (Araki-Haag detectors) in ground state representations of gapped quantum spin systems. The construction is based on general assumptions which are satisfied e.g. in the Ising model in strong transverse magnetic fields. We do not use the method of propagation estimates, but exploit instead compactness of the relevant propagation observables at any fixed time. Implications for the problem of asymptotic completeness are briefly discussed.

Compton scattering in the Buchholz-Roberts framework of relativistic QED

We consider a Haag-Kastler net in a positive energy representation, admitting massive Wigner particles and asymptotic fields of massless bosons. We show that states of the massive particles are always vacua of the massless asymptotic fields. Our argument is based on the Mean Ergodic Theorem in a certain extended Hilbert space. As an application of this result we construct the outgoing isometric wave operator for Compton scattering in QED in a class of representations recently proposed by Buchholz and Roberts. In the course of this analysis we use our new technique to further simplify scattering theory of massless bosons in the vacuum sector. A general discussion of the status of the infrared problem in the setting of Buchholz and Roberts is given.

Lieb-Robinson bounds, Arveson spectrum and Haag-Ruelle scattering theory for gapped quantum spin systems

We consider translation invariant gapped quantum spin systems satisfying the Lieb-Robinson bound and containing single-particle states in a ground state representation. Following the Haag-Ruelle approach from relativistic quantum field theory, we construct states describing collisions of several particles, and define the corresponding $S$-matrix. We also obtain some general restrictions on the shape of the energy-momentum spectrum. For the purpose of our analysis we adapt the concepts of almost local observables and energy-momentum transfer (or Arveson spectrum) from relativistic QFT to the lattice setting. The Lieb-Robinson bound, which is the crucial substitute of strict locality from relativistic QFT, underlies all our constructions. Our results hold, in particular, in the Ising model in strong transverse magnetic fields.

Asymptotic completeness for infraparticles in two-dimensional conformal field theory

We formulate a new concept of asymptotic completeness for two-dimensional massless quantum field theories in the spirit of the theory of particle weights. We show that this concept is more general than the standard particle interpretation based on Buchholz' scattering theory of waves. In particular, it holds in any chiral conformal field theory in an irreducible product representation and in any completely rational conformal field theory. This class contains theories of infraparticles to which the scattering theory of waves does not apply.

A criterion for asymptotic completeness in local relativistic QFT

We formulate a generalized concept of asymptotic completeness and show that it holds in any Haag-Kastler quantum field theory with an upper and lower mass gap. It remains valid in the presence of pairs of oppositely charged particles in the vacuum sector, which invalidate the conventional property of asymptotic completeness. Our result can be restated as a criterion characterizing a class of theories with complete particle interpretation in the conventional sense. This criterion is formulated in terms of certain asymptotic observables (Araki-Haag detectors) whose existence, as strong limits of their approximating sequences, is our main technical result. It is proven with the help of a novel propagation estimate, which is also relevant to scattering theory of quantum mechanical dispersive systems.

Towards a construction of inclusive collision cross-sections in the massless Nelson model

The conventional approach to the infrared problem in perturbative quantum electrodynamics relies on the concept of inclusive collision cross-sections. A non-perturbative variant of this notion was introduced in algebraic quantum field theory. Relying on these insights, we take first steps towards a non-perturbative construction of inclusive collision cross-sections in the massless Nelson model. We show that our proposal is consistent with the standard scattering theory in the absence of the infrared problem and discuss its status in the infrared-singular case.

Coulomb scattering in the massless Nelson model I. Foundations of two-electron scattering

We construct two-electron scattering states and verify their tensor product structure in the infrared-regular massless Nelson model. The proof follows the lines of Haag-Ruelle scattering theory: Scattering state approximants are defined with the help of two time-dependent renormalized creation operators of the electrons acting on the vacuum. They depend on ground state wave functions of the (single-electron) fiber Hamiltonians with infrared cut-off. Convergence of these approximants as $t\to \infty$ is shown with the help of Cook's method combined with a non-stationary phase argument. Removal of the infrared cut-off in the limit $t\to \infty$ requires sharp estimates on the derivatives of these ground state wave functions w.r.t. electron and photon momenta, with mild dependence on the infrared cut-off. These key estimates, which carry information about the localization of electrons in space, are obtained in a companion paper with the help of iterative analytic perturbation theory. Our results hold in the weak coupling regime.

The translation invariant massive Nelson model: III. Asymptotic completeness below the two-boson threshold

We show asymptotic completeness of two-body scattering for a class of translation invariant models describing a single quantum particle (the electron) linearly coupled to a massive scalar field (bosons). Our proof is based on a recently established Mourre estimate for these models. In contrast to previous approaches, it requires no number cutoff, no restriction on the particle-field coupling strength, and no restriction on the magnitude of total momentum. Energy, however, is restricted by the two-boson threshold, admitting only scattering of a dressed electron and a single asymptotic boson. The class of models we consider include the UV-cutoff Nelson and polaron models.

Towards asymptotic completeness of two-particle scattering in local relativistic QFT

We consider the problem of existence of asymptotic observables in local relativistic theories of massive particles. Let $\ti p_1$ and $\ti p_2$ be two energy-momentum vectors of a massive particle and let $\De$ be a small neighbourhood of $\ti p_1+\ti p_2$. We construct asymptotic observables (two-particle Araki-Haag detectors), sensitive to neutral particles of energy-momenta in small neighbourhoods of $\ti p_1$ and $\ti p_2$. We show that these asymptotic observables exist, as strong limits of their approximating sequences, on all physical states from the spectral subspace of $\De$. Moreover, the linear span of the ranges of all such asymptotic observables coincides with the subspace of two-particle Haag-Ruelle scattering states with total energy-momenta in $\De$. The result holds under very general conditions which are satisfied, for example, in $\la ϕ^4_2$. The proof of convergence relies on a variant of the phase-space propagation estimate of Graf.

Continuous Spectrum of Automorphism Groups and the Infraparticle Problem

This paper presents a general framework for a refined spectral analysis of a group of isometries acting on a Banach space, which extends the spectral theory of Arveson. The concept of continuous Arveson spectrum is introduced and the corresponding spectral subspace is defined. The absolutely continuous and singular-continuous parts of this spectrum are specified. Conditions are given, in terms of the transposed action of the group of isometries, which guarantee that the pure-point and continuous subspaces span the entire Banach space. In the case of a unitarily implemented group of automorphisms, acting on a $C^*$-algebra, relations between the continuous spectrum of the automorphisms and the spectrum of the implementing group of unitaries are found. The group of spacetime translation automorphisms in quantum field theory is analyzed in detail. In particular, it is shown that the structure of its continuous spectrum is relevant to the problem of existence of (infra-)particles in a given theory.

Asymptotic completeness in a class of massless relativistic quantum field theories

This paper presents the first examples of massless relativistic quantum field theories which are interacting and asymptotically complete. These two-dimensional theories are obtained by an application of a deformation procedure, introduced recently by Grosse and Lechner, to chiral conformal quantum field theories. The resulting models may not be strictly local, but they contain observables localized in spacelike wedges. It is shown that the scattering theory for waves in two dimensions, due to Buchholz, is still valid under these weaker assumptions. The concepts of interaction and asymptotic completeness, provided by this theory, are adopted in the present investigation.

Coincidence Arrangements of Local Observables and Uniqueness of the Vacuum in QFT

A new phase space criterion, encoding the physically motivated behavior of coincidence arrangements of local observables, is proposed in this work. This condition entails, in particular, uniqueness and purity of the energetically accessible vacuum states. It is shown that the qualitative part of this new criterion is equivalent to a compactness condition proposed in the literature. Its novel quantitative part is verified in massive free field theory.
