Low temperature magnetism of KAgF3

KAgF$_3$ is a quasi one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet hosting a series of intriguing structural and magnetic transitions. Here we use powder neutron diffraction, $μ$SR spectroscopy, and Density Functional Theory calculations to elucidate the low temperature magnetic phases. Below $T_{N1}=29$K we find that the material orders as an A-type antiferromagnet with an ordered moment of 0.47$μ_{\rm B}$. Both neutrons and muons provide evidence for an intermediate phase at temperatures $T_{N1}<T<T_{N2}$ with $T_{N2}\approx 66$ K from a previous magnetometry study. However, the evidence is at the limit of detection and its nature remains an open problem.

Ag(II) as spin super-polarizer in metal fluoride clusters

Using quantum mechanical calculations, we examine magnetic (super)exchange interactions in hypothetical, chemically reasonable molecular coordination clusters containing fluoride bridged late transition metals or selected lanthanides, as well as Ag(II). By referencing to analogous species comprising closed shell Cd(II) we provide theoretical evidence that the presence of Ag(II) may modify the magnetic properties of such systems (including metal metal superexchange) to a surprising degree, specifically both coupling sign and strength may markedly change. Remarkably, this happens in spite of the fact that the fluoride ligand is the least susceptible to spin polarization among all monoatomic ligands known in chemistry. In an extreme case of a oxo bridged Ni(II)2 complex, the presence of Ag(II) leads to a nearly 17 fold increase of magnetic superexchange and switching from antiferro- to ferromagnetic coupling. Ag(II), with one hole in its d shell that may be shared with or transferred to ligands, effectively acts as spin superpolarizer, and this feature could be exploited in spintronics and diverse molecular devices.

Quadripartite bond length rule applied to two prototypical aromatic and antiaromatic molecules

In 2000, a remarkably simple relationship was introduced, which connected the calculated geometries of isomolecular states of three different multiplicities. These encompass a ground singlet state, the first excited triplet state, as well as related radical anion and radical cation. The rule allows prediction of geometry of one of the species if the three remaining ones are known. Here, we verify applicability of this bond length rule for two small planar cyclic organic molecules, i.e. benzene and cyclobutadiene, which stand as prototypical examples of, respectively, aromatic and antiaromatic systems. We see that the rule works fairly well to benzene and it works independently for quinoid as well as for anti-quinoid minima, and despite the fact that radical anion species poses challenges for correct theoretical description.

Towards hydrogen-rich ionic (NH4)(BH3NH2BH2NH2BH3) and related molecular NH3BH2NH2BH2NH2BH3

Attempts of synthesis of ionic (NH4)(BH3NH2BH2NH2BH3) using metathetical approach resulted in a mixture of the target compound and a partly dehydrogenated molecular NH3BH2NH2BH2NH2BH3 product. The mixed specimen was characterized by NMR and vibrational spectroscopies, and the crystal structure of their cocrystal was solved from powder x-ray diffraction data, and supplemented by theoretical density functional theory calculations. Despite their impressive hydrogen content, and similarly to ammonia borane, both title compounds release hydrogen substantially polluted with borazine, and traces of ammonia and diborane.

New CuSO4-related high-temperature polymorph of AgIISO4

Silver(II) compounds exhibit powerful oxidizing properties and strong magnetic superexchange. AgSO4 is a rare fluorine-free salt of Ag(II) which found some application in organic chemistry. Here, we report a discovery of a new AgSO4 polymorph (\b{eta}). The distinct nature of the two polytypes of AgSO4 is established using powder x-ray diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. The \b{eta} polymorph crystallizes in the monoclinic system (P21/n) and shows structural similarities with CuSO4. DFT calculations indicate very small differences in the energy of the two polymorphs AgSO4, but the relative stability of the \b{eta} polymorph should increase with temperature. The monoclinic distortion of the orthorhombic CuSO4 prototype originates from an unprecedented strong antiferromagnetic interaction between Ag sites along the unit cell diagonal.

Strength of Correlations in a Silver Based Cuprate Analogue

AgF2 has been proposed as a cuprate analogue which requires strong correlation and marked covalence. On the other hand, fluorides are usually quite ionic and 4d transition metals tend to be less correlated than their 3d counterparts, which calls for further scrutiny. We combine valence band photoemission and Auger-Meitner spectroscopy of AgF and AgF2 together with computations in small clusters to estimate values of the Ag 4d Coulomb interaction U 4d and charge-transfer energy. Based on these values, AgF2 can be classified as a charge-transfer correlated insulator according to the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen classification scheme. Thus, we confirm that the material is a cuprate analogue from the point of view of correlations, suggesting that it should become a high-temperature superconductor if metallization is achieved by doping. We present also a computation of the Hubbard U in density functional "+U" methods and discuss its relation to the Hubbard U in spectroscopies.

Structural phase transitions and magnetic superexchange in MIAgIIF3 perovskites at high pressure

Pressure induced phase transitions of MIAgIIF3 perovskites where M = K, Rb, Cs, have been predicted theoretically for the first time for pressures up to 100 GPa. The sequence of phase transitions for M = K and Rb consists of an orthorhombic to monoclinic and back to orthorhombic transition, associated with progressive bending of infinite chains of corner sharing [AgF6]4 minus octahedra and their mutual approaching via secondary Ag...F contacts. In stark contrast, only a single phase transition i.e. tetragonal to triclinic, is predicted for CsAgF3, associated with substantial deformation of the Jahn Teller-distorted first coordination sphere of AgII and association of the infinite [AgF6]4 minus chains into a polymeric sublattice. The phase transitions markedly decrease the coupling strength of intra-chain antiferromagnetic superexchange in MAgF3 hosts lattices.

Synthesis, structure and electric conductivity of higher hydrides of ytterbium at high pressure

While most of the rare earth metals readily form trihydrides, due to increased stability of the filled 4f electronic shell for Yb(II), only YbH$_{2.67}$, formally corresponding to Yb$^{\rm II}$(Yb$^{\rm III}$H$_4$)$_2$ or Yb$_3$H$_8$, remains the highest hydride of ytterbium. Utilizing diamond anvil cell methodology and synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction we have attempted to push this limit further via hydrogenation of metallic Yb (at room temperature and heated in situ) and of Yb$_3$H$_8$. Compression of the latter has also been investigated in a neutral pressure transmitting medium, PTM. While the in situ heating of Yb facilitates the formation of YbH$_2$ plus x hydride, we have not observed the clear qualitative differences between the systems compressed in H$_2$ and He or Ne PTM. In all these cases a sequence of phase transitions from the unit cells of P-31m symmetry to the I4/m and I4/mmm systems occurred within ca. 13 to 18 GPa and around 27 GPa, respectively. At the same time, the molecular volume of the systems compressed in H$_2$ PTM is ca. 1.5% larger than of those compressed in inert gases, suggesting a small hydrogen uptake. Nevertheless, hydrogenation towards YbH$_3$ is incomplete, and polyhydrides do not form up to the highest pressure studied here of ca. 75 GPa. As pointed out by our electronic transport measurements under compression in NaCl PTM, the mixed-valence Yb$_3$H$_8$ retains its semiconducting character up to at least 50 GPa, although the very low remnant activation energy of conduction, smaller than 5 meV, suggests that the metallization under further compression should be achievable. Finally, we provide a theoretical description of a hypothetical stoichiometric YbH$_3$.

Charge Transfer and $dd$ excitations in AgF$_{2}$

Charge transfer (CT) insulators are the parent phase of a large group of today's unconventional high-temperature superconductors. Here we study experimentally and theoretically the interband excitations of the CT insulator silver fluoride AgF$_2$, which has been proposed as an excellent analogue of oxocuprates. Optical conductivity and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) on AgF$_2$ polycrystalline sample show a close similarity with that measured on undoped La$_2$CuO$_4$. While the former shows a CT gap $\sim$3.4 eV, larger than in the cuprate, $dd$ excitations are nearly at the same energy in the two materials. DFT and exact diagonalization cluster computations of the multiplet spectra show that AgF$_2$ is more covalent than the cuprate, in spite of the larger fundamental gap. Furthermore, we show that AgF$_2$ is at the verge of a charge transfer instability. The overall resemblance of our data on AgF$_2$ to those published previously on La$_2$CuO$_4$ suggests that the underlying CT insulator physics is the same, while AgF$_2$ could also benefit from a proximity to a charge density wave phase as in BaBiO$_3$. Therefore, our work provides a compelling support to the future use of fluoroargentates for materials' engineering of novel high-temperature superconductors.

Phase transitions and amorphization of M2AgF4 (M = Na, K, Rb) compounds at high pressure

We report the results of Raman spectroscopy high-pressure studies of alkali metal fluoroargentates (M2AgF4, where M=Na, K, Rb) associated with theoretical and x-ray diffraction studies for the K member of the series. Theoretical density functional calculations predict two structural phase transitions for K2AgF4: one from low pressure monoclinic P21/c (beta) phase to intermediate-pressure tetragonal I4!2d structure at 6 GPa, and another to high-pressure triclinic P1! phase at 58 GPa. However, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction data indicate that both polymorphic forms of K2AgF4 as well as two other fluoroargentate phases studied undergo amorphization at pressure as low as several GPa.

Effect of vanadium catalysts on hydrogen evolution from NaBH4

NaBH4 is a very cheap and hydrogen rich material and a potential hydrogen store. However, high temperature of its thermal decomposition (above 530°C) renders it inapplicable in practical use. Here, we have studied the effect of addition of diverse V containing catalysts on thermal hydrogen desorption. It turns out that mechanochemical doping of NaBH4 with vanadium metal, its oxides or nanoparticles lowers the temperature of pyrolysis significantly. Notably, NaBH4 milled for 3 hrs with 25 wt.% of V2O5 or VO2 releases ca. 70 % of stored hydrogen in the temperature range from ca. 370°C to 450°C. On the other hand, precursors and solvents used to prepare rather uniform vanadium nanoparticles (ca. 4nm) suspended in THF or less uniform and larger ones (ca. 28nm) in ortho difluorobenzene, have adverse effect on purity of hydrogen evolved.

Charge doping to flat AgF2 monolayers in a chemical capacitor setup

Flat monolayers of silver II fluoride, which could be obtained by epitaxial deposition on an appropriate substrate, have been recently predicted to exhibit very strong antiferromagnetic superexchange and to have large potential for ambient pressure superconductivity if doped to an optimal level. It was shown that AgF2 could become a magnetic glue based superconductor with a critical superconducting temperature approaching 200 K at optimum doping. In the current work we calculate the optimum doping to correspond to 14% of holes per formula unit, i.e. quite similar to that for oxocuprates II. Furthermore, using DFT calculations we show that flat AgF2 single layers can indeed be doped to a controlled extent using a recently proposed chemical capacitor setup. Hole doping associated with formation of Ag III proves to be difficult to achieve in the setup explored in this work as it falls at verge of charge stability of fluoride anions and does not affect the d x2 minus y2 manifold . However, in the case of electron doping, manipulation of different factors, such as number of dopant layers and the thickness of the separator, permits fine tuning of the doping level - and concomitantly TC - all the way from underdoped to overdoped regime (in a similar manner as chemical doping for the Nd2CuO4 analogue).

Crystal structure, lattice dynamics and superexchange in MAgF3 1D antiferromagnets (M = K, Rb, Cs) and Rb3Ag2F7 Ruddlesden-Popper phase

With the use of lattice dynamics calculation within hybrid HSE06 framework we were able to understand vibrational spectra of MAgF3 M = K, Rb, Cs compounds. Comparative theoretical study uncovered lack of monotonicity in calculated optical phonons associated with Ag F stretching modes which can be explained through an interplay of Lewis acidity of MI cation and its size. We confirm the tetragonal unit cells of MAgF3 M=Rb, Cs at room temperature. We also theoretically predict an orthorhombic RbAgF3 polymorph as a ground state at low temperature. However, we were not able to detect it by the means of low temperature PXRD at 80 K nor low temperature Raman at 154 K due to a number of constraints. We also describe a novel Ruddlesden Popper phase of Rb3Ag2F7 which can be regarded as quasi 0D system, where superexchange coupling constant between the nearest AgII centres reaches an impressive value of minus 240.2 meV.

Observation of a new polyhalide phase in Ag-Cl$_2$ system at high pressure

In this short contribution, we examine Raman spectroscopic data from high-pressure and high-temperature experiments with Ag-Cl$_2$ system, and find that they are in good agreement with previously observed and calculated spectra of polychloride species. Our results imply the formation of a hitherto unknown AgCl$_x$ compound, which warrants further study.

Superexchange interactions in AgMF4 (M = Co, Ni, Cu) polymorphs

Magnetic properties of silver(II) compounds have been of interest in recent years. In covalent compounds, the main mechanism of interaction between paramagnetic sites is the superexchange via the connecting ligand. To date, little is known of magnetic interactions between Ag(II) cations and other paramagnetic centres. It is because only a few compounds bearing Ag(II) cation and other paramagnetic transition metal cation are known experimentally. Recently the high-pressure synthesis of ternary silver(II) fluorides with 3d metal cations AgMF4 (M = Co, Ni, Cu) was predicted to be feasible. Here, we investigate the magnetic properties of these compounds in their diverse polymorphic forms. Using well established computational methods we predict superexchange pathways in AgMF4, evaluate coupling constants and calculate the impact of Ag(II) presence on superexchange between the other cations. The results indicate that the low-pressure form of AgCuF4, the only composed of stacked layers as the parent AgF2, would hold mainly Ag-Ag and Cu-Cu superexchange interactions. Upon compression, or with the nickel(II) cation, the Ag-M interactions in AgMF4 intensify, which is emphasized by an increase of Ag-M superexchange coupling constants and Ag-F-M angles. All the strongest Ag-M superexchange pathways are quasi-linear, leading to the formation of antiferromagnetic chains along the crystallographic directions. The impact of Ag(II) on M-M superexchange turns out to be moderate, due to factors connected to the crystal structure.

Charge ordering mechanism in silver fluoride AgF$_2$

Using Density Functional Theory, competition between Mott-Hubbard and intervalence charge transfer mechanism of electron localization is revealed in AgF$_2$, an important silver analogue of oxocuprates. We show that at reduced temperature and electron correlations AgF$_2$ becomes metallic and dynamically unstable in respect to CDW phonon modes that promote charge ordering. The CDW instability is closely related to Kohn anomaly and Fermi surface nesting. The long advocated KBrF$_4$ type CDW Ag$^{1+/3+}$F$_2$ structure and its facile transformation to the ground state Ag$^{2+}$F$_2$ phase is explained. Our results point out to intimate interplay between lattice, charge and spin degrees of freedom in seemingly simplistic binary metal fluoride.

The fate of compound with AgF$_2$ plus AgO stoichiometry. A theoretical study

Metal oxyfluorides constitute a broad group of chemical compounds with rich spectrum of crystal structures and properties. Here we predict, based on evolutionary algorithm approach, the crystal structure and selected properties of Ag$_2$OF$_2$. This system may be considered as the 1 to 1 adduct of AgF$_2$ (i.e. an antiferromagnetic charge transfer positive U insulator) and AgO (i.e. a disproportionated negative U insulator). We analyze oxidation states of silver in each structure, possible magnetic interactions, as well as energetic stability. Prospect is outlined for synthesis of polytypes of interest using diverse synthetic approaches.

Fate of doped carriers in silver fluoride cuprate analogues

AgF$_2$ is a correlated charge-transfer insulator with properties remarkably similar to insulating cuprates which have raised hope that it may lead to a new family of unconventional superconductors upon doping. We use ab initio computations to study doping strategies leading to metallization. Because the upper Hubbard band is very narrow electron doping leads to undesired strongly self-trapped states (polarons). For the hole-doped case, polaron tendency is stronger than for cuprates but still moderate enough to expect that heavily doped compounds may become metallic. Since the strong electron lattice coupling originates in the strong buckling we study also an hypothetically flat allotrope and show that it has excellent prospect to become metallic. We compare the AgF2 behavior with that for the hole-doped conventional cuprate La$_2$CuO$_4$ and electron-doped Nd$_2$CuO$_4$. Our results show a clear path to achieve high temperature superconductivity in silver fluorides.
