Twistor theory of Loxodromes

The twistor correspondence provides a duality between curves in $S^4$ and ruled surfaces in $\mathbb{CP}^3$ in which the conformal properties of the former are reflected in the projective properties of the latter. We use this to characterise a $14$--dimensional family of homogeneous ruled surfaces in $\mathbb{CP}^3$ which correspond to loxodromes in $S^4$.

Rigidity theorems for cone structures

Cone structures on differentiable manifolds are fields of cones in the tangent bundle. A cone structure is isotrivial, modeled on a fixed immersed submanifold of the projective space, if at each point the projectivised cone is projectively equivalent to that submanifold. We consider cone structures arising from ordinary differential equations via a canonical construction. We prove that isotrivial cone structures in this class, modeled on generic curves in the $n$-dimensional projective space or ruled surfaces in the three-dimensional projective space, are flat. We also discuss applications to causal geometries in four dimensions and dispersionless Lax systems.

Cone structures and path geometries with constant torsion

We study three-dimensional path geometries with nontrivial torsion of maximal rank. We introduce the notion of constant torsion and show that such path geometries are in one-to-one correspondence with certain cone structures modeled on homogeneous ruled surfaces. We also describe these cone structures in terms of solutions to new integrable systems admitting dispersionless, non-isospectral Lax pairs.

Lewy curves in para-CR geometry

We define a class of curves, referred to as Lewy curves, in para-CR geometry, following H. Lewy's original definition in CR geometry. We give a characterization of path geometries defined by para-CR Lewy curves. In dimension 3 our characterization is given by a set of necessary and sufficient conditions which, with the exception of one condition, are easily computationally verifiable. Furthermore, we show that Lewy curves of a para-CR 3-manifold coincide with chains of some (para-)CR 3-manifold if and only if it is flat. Subsequently, it follows that Lewy curves determine the para-CR structure up to the sign of the almost para-complex structure. In higher dimensions we show that para-CR Lewy curves define a path geometry if and only if the para-CR structure is flat, in which case chains and Lewy curves coincide.

A characterization of chains in dimension three

Given a 3-dimensional (para-)CR structure, its family of chains define a 3-dimensional path geometry. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions that determine whether a path geometry in dimension three arises from chains of a CR or para-CR 3-manifold. We demonstrate how our characterization can be verified computationally for a given 3-dimensional path geometry and discuss a few examples.

Two-component integrable extension of general heavenly equation

We introduce an integrable two-component extension of the general heavenly equation and prove that the solutions of this extension are in one-to-one correspondence with 4-dimensional hyper-para-Hermitian metrics. Furthermore, we demonstrate that if the metrics in question are hyper-para-Kähler, then our system reduces to the general heavenly equation. We also present an infinite hierarchy of nonlocal symmetries and a recursion operator for the system under study.

Conjugate points of dynamic pairs and control systems

We study the geometry of dynamic pairs $(X,\mathcal{V})$ on a manifold $M$, where $X$ is a vector field and $\mathcal{V}$ is a distribution on $M$, both satisfying a regularity condition. Special cases are pairs defined by systems of second order ODEs, geodesic sprays in Riemannian, Finslerian and Lagranian geometries, semi-Hamiltonian systems and control-affine systems. Analogs of conjugate points from the calculus of variations are defined for the pair $(X,\mathcal{V})$. The main results give estimates for the position of conjugate points in terms of a curvature operator, analogously to the Cartan--Hadamard and Bonet--Myers theorems. Contrary to classical cases, no metric is given a priori, the distribution $\mathcal{V}$ may be nonintegrable and the curvature operator is defined in terms of $(X,\mathcal{V})$.

Deformations of dispersionless Lax systems

We consider dispersionless Lax systems and present a new systematic method of deriving new integrable systems from a given one. We provide examples that include: the dispersionless Hirota equation, the general heavenly equation and the web equations.

The Schwarzian derivative and Euler--Lagrange equations

We study the Schwarzian derivative from a variational viewpoint. Firstly we show that the Schwarzian derivative defines a first integral of the Euler--Lagrange equation of a second order Lagrangian. Secondly, we show that the Schwarzian derivative itself is the Euler--Lagrange operator for an appropriately chosen class of variations.

Variational principles for conformal geodesics

Conformal geodesics are solutions to a system of third order of equations, which makes a Lagrangian formulation problematic. We show how enlarging the class of allowed variations leads to a variational formulation for this system with a third--order conformally invariant Lagrangian. We also discuss the conformally invariant system of fourth order ODEs arising from this Lagrangian, and show that some of its integral curves are spirals.

Geometric aspects of two- and threepeakons

We apply geometric tools to study dynamics of two- and threepeakon solutions of the Camassa--Holm equation. New proofs of asymptotic behavior of the solutions are given. In particular we recover well-known collision conditions. Additionally the Gauss curvature (in the twopeakon case) and the sectional curvature (in the treepeakon case) of corresponding manifolds are computed.

The Cayley cubic and differential equations

We define Cayley structures as a field of Cayley's ruled cubic surfaces over a four dimensional manifold and motivate their study by showing their similarity to indefinite conformal structures and their link to differential equations. In particular, for Cayley structures an extension of certain notions defined for indefinite conformal structures in dimension four are introduced, e.g., half-flatness, existence of a null foliation, ultra-half-flatness, an associated pair of second order ODEs, and a dispersionless Lax pair. After solving the equivalence problem we obtain the fundamental invariants, find the local generality of several classes of Cayley structures and give examples.

GL(2)-geometry and complex structures

We study $GL(2)$-structures on differential manifolds. The structures play a fundamental role in the geometric theory of ordinary differential equations. We prove that any $GL(2)$-structure on an even dimensional manifold give rise to a certain almost-complex structure on a bundle over the original manifold. Further, we exploit a natural notion of integrability for the $GL(2)$-structures, which is a counterpart of the self-duality for the 4-dimensional conformal structures. We relate the integrability of the $GL(2)$-structures to the integrability of the almost-complex structures. This allows to perform a twistor-like construction for the $GL(2)$-geometry. Moreover, we provide an explicit construction of a canonical connection for any $GL(2)$-structure.

Dissipative prolongations of the multipeakon solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation

Multipeakons are special solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation described by an integrable geodesic flow on a Riemannian manifold. We present a bi-Hamiltonian formulation of the system explicitly and write down formulae for the associated first integrals. Then we exploit the first integrals and present a novel approach to the problem of the dissipative prolongations of multipeakons after the collision time. We prove that an $n$-peakon after a collision becomes an $n-1$-peakon for which the momentum is preserved.

Webs and projective structures on a plane

We prove that there is a correspondence between projective structures defined by torsion-free connections with skew-symmetric Ricci tensor and Veronese webs on a plane. The correspondence is used to characterise the projective structures in terms of second order ODEs.

On contact equivalence of systems of ordinary differential equations

We consider a problem of equivalence of generic pairs $(X,V)$ on a manifold $M$, where $V$ is a distribution of rank $m$ and $X$ is a distribution of rank one. We construct a canonical bundle with a canonical frame. We prove that two pairs are equivalent if and only if the corresponding frames are diffeomorphic. As a particular case, with $V$ integrable, we provide a new solution to the problem of contact equivalence of systems of $m$ ordinary differential equations: $x^{(k+1)}=F(t,x,x',...,x^{(k)})$, where $k>2$ or $k=2$ and $m>1$.
