On regularity estimates for axially symmetric Navier-Stokes equations in a cylinder and the critical-wedge occurrence problem

We consider the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations in a finite cylinder $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ with slip-type boundary conditions. Our aim is to estimate $X_s(t):=\|ω_r/r\|_{V(Ω^t)}+\|ω_φ/r\|_{V(Ω^t)}$. The closure mechanism depends on the relation between the $L^s$ and $L^\infty$ norms of the angular component $v_φ$. For fixed $A,c_0>0$, we identify the critical wedge $W_{A,c_0}:=\{t\in(0,T):\|v_φ(t)\|_{L^s(Ω)}>A,\ \|v_φ(t)\|_{L^s(Ω)}/\|v_φ(t)\|_{L^\infty(Ω)}<c_0\}$, with the ratio interpreted as $+\infty$ when the denominator vanishes. The main result is a conditional a priori estimate in which the possible loss of control is measured by a critical-wedge residual. If $E_{W,s}$ denotes the positive, non-closable part of the nonlinear interaction $\int_{Ω^t}(v_φ/r)ΦΓ\,dx\,dt'$, restricted to $W_{A,c_0}$, then $X_s(t)\leqΨ_{s,A,c_0}(\mathrm{data},\int_0^tE_{W,s}(τ)\,dτ)$ for $0<t<T$, where $Ψ_{s,A,c_0}$ is increasing. If the residual vanishes, in particular when the trajectory does not enter the critical wedge, the original data-dependent a priori estimate is recovered. Under additional regularity assumptions on the force and initial velocity, a corresponding higher Sobolev estimate for $v$ and $\nabla p$ follows with the same conditional dependence.

On regularity estimates for the axially symmetric Navier-Stokes Cauchy problem and the critical-wedge occurrence problem

We consider the Cauchy problem for the axially symmetric Navier-Stokes equations in R^3. Our aim is to derive estimates for the scaled vorticity components Phi = omega_r/r and Gamma = omega_phi/r, measured in the energy norm X(t). The original closure mechanism depends on the relation between the L^s norm and the L-infinity norm of the angular velocity component v_phi. We identify a critical wedge in the corresponding phase geometry, defined through a smoothly localized velocity profile near the axis of symmetry. The main result is a conditional a priori estimate in which the possible loss of control is measured by the nonlinear interaction accumulated during the times belonging to the critical wedge. In particular, if the critical-wedge contribution vanishes, the residual-free a priori estimate depending only on the data is recovered. Under additional regularity assumptions on the force and the initial velocity, we derive the corresponding higher-order Sobolev estimate on every finite time interval on which the wedge residual remains controlled. The result does not provide an unconditional global regularity theorem; rather, it isolates the only concentration regime not controlled by the two original closure mechanisms.

A regularity criterion for the angular component of velocity in the norm $L_\infty(0,T;L_p(Ω)),\;\frac 3 p <1$ in axisymmetric Navier Stokes equations in a cylinder

We consider the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations in a finite cylinder $Ω\subset\R^3$. We assume that $v_r$, $v_φ$, $ω_φ$ vanish on the lateral part of boundary $\partialΩ$ of the cylinder, and that $v_z$, $ω_φ$, $\partial_zv_φ$ vanish on the top and bottom parts of the boundary $\partialΩ$, where we used standard cylindrical coordinates, and we denoted by $ω=\curl v$ the vorticity field. We use $H^3$ Sobolev estimates for the modified stream function (stream function divided by radius) and energy type estimates for gradient of swirl to derive two order reduction estimates. Using the estimate \[ \|v_φ\|_{L_\infty(0,T;L_p)Ω)}\les A, \] where A is a given number and $p>3$ we prove the existence of global regular axially-symmetric solutions.

Weak solutions to incompressible heat-conducting motions with large flux

We analyze the problem for viscous incompressible heat-conduc\-ting fluid in a finite cylinder with large inflow and outflow, modelled with Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the heat equation. We prove energy estimate without restrictions on the magnitudes of the external force, initial data, inflow and outflow. In order to estimate nonlinear terms we use weighted spaces. Next, using Galerkin approximation, we show existence of weak solutions.

The global estimate for regular axially-symmetric solutions to the Navier Stokes equations coupled with the heat conduction

The axially-symmetric solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the heat conduction are considered. in a bounded cylinder $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$. We assume that $v_r, v_φ, ω_φ$ vanish on the lateral part $S_1$ of the boundary $\partial Ω$ and $v_z, ω_φ, \partial_z v_φ$ vanish on the top and bottom of the cylinder, where we used standard cylindrical coordinates and $ω=\text{rot} v$ is the vorticity of the fluid. Moreover, vanishing of the heat flux through the boundary is imposed. Assuming existence of a sufficiently regular solution we derive a global a priori estimate in terms of data. The estimate is such that a global regular solutions can be proved. We prove the estimate because some reduction of nonlinearity are found. Moreover, deriving the global estimate for a local solution implies a possibility of its extension in time as long as the estimate holds.

Local solutions for nonhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with large flux

The local existence of solutions to nonhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations in cylindrical domains with arbitrary large flux is demonstrated. The existence is proved by the method of successive approximations. To show the existence with the lowest possible regularity the special Besov spaces called the Sobolev-Slobodetskii spaces are used. The inflow and outflow are prescribed on the parts of the boundary which are perpendicular to the $x_3$-axis. Since the inflow and outflow are positive the crucial point of this paper is to verify that $x_3$-coordinate of velocity is also positive. Finally, we conclude the local existence such that the velocity belongs to $W_σ ^{2+{s},1+{s}/2}(Ω^t)$, the gradient of pressure to $W_σ ^{{s},{s}/2}(Ω^t)$ and the density to $W_{r,\infty}^{1,1}(Ω^t)$, where ${s}\in(0,1)$, $σ >3/{s}$, $r>5/{s}$, $r>σ $.

Global motions for nonhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with large flux

The nonhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations are considered in a cylindrical domain in ${\mathbb R}^3$, parallel to the $x_3$-axis with large inflow and outflow on the top and the bottom. Moreover, on the lateral part of the cylinder the slip boundary conditions are assumed. The global existence of regular solutions is proved under assumptions that inflow and outflow are close to homogeneous and norms of derivative with respect to $x_3$ of the external force and initial velocity are sufficiently small. The key point of this paper is to verify that $x_3$-coordinate of velocity remains positive.

Global regular axially-symmetric solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with small swirl

Axially symmetric solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded cylinder are considered. On the boundary the normal component of the velocity and he angular components of the velocity and vorticity are assumed to vanish. If the norm of the initial swirl is sufficiently small, then the regularity of axially symmetric, weak solutions is shown. The key tool is a new estimate for the stream function in certain weighted Sobolev spaces.

On the Stokes system in cylindrical domains

The existence of solutions to some initial-boundary value problem for the Stokes system is proved. The result is shown in Sobolev-Slobodetskii spaces such that the velocity belongs to $W_r^{2+σ,1+σ/2}(Ω^T)$ and gradient of pressure to $W_r^{σ,σ/2}(Ω^T)$, where $r\in(1,\infty)$, $σ\in(0,1)$, $Ω^T=Ω\times(0,T)$. These are special Besov spaces: $B_{r,r}^{2+σ,1+σ/2}(Ω^T)$ and $B_{r,r}^{σ,σ/2}(Ω^T)$, respectively. The existence is proved by the technique of regularizer.

On some regularity criteria for axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations

We point out some criteria that imply regularity of axisymmetric solutions to Navier-Stokes equations. We show that boundedness of $\|{v_{r}}/{\sqrt{r^3}}\|_{L_2({\rm R}^3\times (0,T))}$ as well as boundedness of $\|{ω_φ}/{\sqrt{r}}\|_{L_2({\rm R}^3\times (0,T))},$ where $v_r$ is the radial component of velocity and $ω_φ$ is the angular component of vorticity, imply regularity of weak solutions.

Global regular motions for compressible barotropic viscous fluids. Stability

We consider viscous compressible barotropic motions in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ with the Dirichlet boundary conditions for velocity. We assume the existence of some special sufficiently regular solutions $v_s$ (velocity), $\varrho_s$ (density) of the problem. By the special solutions we can choose spherically symmetric solutions. Let $v$, $\varrho$ be a~solution to our problem. Then we are looking for differences $u=v-v_s$, $η=\varrho-\varrho_s$. We prove existence of $u$, $η$ such that $u,η\in L_\infty(kT,(k+1)T;H^2(Ω))$, $u_t,η_t\in L_\infty(kT,(k+1)T;H^1(Ω))$, $u\in L_2(kT,(k+1)T;H^3(Ω))$, $u_t\in L_2(kT,(k+1)T;H^2(Ω))$, where $T>0$ is fixed and $k \in \mathbb{N} \cup \{0 \}$. Moreover, $u$, $η$ are sufficiently small in the above norms. This also means that stability of the special solutions $v_s$, $\varrho_s$ is proved. Finally, we proved existence of solutions such that $v=v_s+u$, $\varrho=\varrho_s+η$.
