Competition for being visited first and ordered search deterrence

When customers must visit a seller to learn the valuation of its product, sellers potentially benefit from charging a lower price on the first visit and a higher price when a buyer returns. Armstrong and Zhou (2016) show that such price discrimination can arise in equilibrium when buyers learn a seller's pricing policy only upon visiting. We depart from this assumption by supposing that sellers commit to observable pricing policies that guide consumer search and buyers can choose whom to visit first. We show that no seller engages in price discrimination in equilibrium.

Electrical polarization switching in bulk single crystal GaFeO$_{3}$

The electrical polarization switching on stoichiometric GaFeO$_{3}$ single crystal was measured, and a new model of atomic displacements responsible for the polarization reverse was proposed. The widely adapted mechanism of polarization switching in GaFeO$_{3}$ can be applied to stoichiometric, perfectly ordered crystals. However, the grown single crystals, as well as thin films of Ga-Fe-O, show pronounced atomic disorder. By piezoresponse force microscopy, the electrical polarization switching on a crystal surface perpendicular to the electrical polarization direction was demonstrated. Atomic disorder in the crystal was measured by X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. These measurements were supported by ab initio calculations. By analysis of atomic disorder and electronic structure calculations, the energies of defects of cations in foreign cationic sites were estimated. The energies of the polarization switch were estimated, confirming the proposed mechanism of polarization switching in GaFeO$_{3}$ single crystals.

Heat capacity anomaly near magnetic phase transition in GaFeO$_3$

A heat capacity anomaly in the vicinity of magnetic transition was observed in single crystal GaFeO3 for the first time. The crystals grown along the expected electric polarization direction were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer and magnetic measurements. Two separate data analyses of heat capacity showed similar results within the experimental accuracy. Critical exponent, α=-0.2(1), and amplitude ratios of positive and negative reduced temperatures near the critical point, A_+/A_-=1.2(1), are consistent with behavior of a 3-D Heisenberg ferromagnet.

A more general Pandora's rule?

In a classic model analysed by Weitzman an agent is presented with boxes containing prizes. She may open boxes in any order, discover prizes within, and optimally stop. She wishes to maximize the expected value of the greatest prize found, minus costs of opening boxes. The problem is solved by a so-called Pandora's rule, and has applications to searching for a house or job. However, this does not model the problem of a student who searches for the subject to choose as her major and benefits from all courses she takes while searching. So motivated, we ask whether there are any problems for which a generalized Pandora's rule is optimal when the objective is a more general function of all the discovered prizes. We show that if a generalized Pandora's rule is optimal for all specifications of costs and prize distributions, then the objective function must take a special form. We also explain how the Gittins index theorem can be applied to an equivalent multi-armed bandit problem to prove optimality of Pandora's rule for the student's problem. However, we also show that there do exist some problems which are not of multi-armed bandit type for which Pandora's rule is optimal.

A nonmanipulable test

A test is said to control for type I error if it is unlikely to reject the data-generating process. However, if it is possible to produce stochastic processes at random such that, for all possible future realizations of the data, the selected process is unlikely to be rejected, then the test is said to be manipulable. So, a manipulable test has essentially no capacity to reject a strategic expert. Many tests proposed in the existing literature, including calibration tests, control for type I error but are manipulable. We construct a test that controls for type I error and is nonmanipulable.
