Trigonometric Nosé--Hoover oscillator: chaos, periodic orbits and integrability

We introduce a trigonometric version of the Nosé-Hoover oscillator in which the quadratic mechanical terms and unbounded thermostat coupling are replaced by bounded trigonometric functions. This formulation replaces the harmonic potential by a pendulum-type potential and confines the thermostat interaction to a bounded periodic form. The resulting two-parameter system is naturally defined on the three-dimensional torus and reduces near the origin, to leading order, to the classical polynomial Nosé-Hoover model. We investigate its global dynamics using Poincaré sections, bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov spectra, Kaplan-Yorke dimensions, and the Lyapunov Integrability Test (LIT). The numerical results reveal the coexistence of regular and chaotic dynamics and characterize changes in dissipative behavior across the parameter plane. We then analyze the two limiting cases associated with the parameter axes. For $a=0$, we construct two functionally independent first integrals on regular domains, whereas for $b=0$ the dynamics reduces to a family of two-dimensional systems on invariant tori, which are analyzed using Darboux polynomials and exponential factors. First-order averaging near the intersection of these integrable limits yields periodic solutions bifurcating from unperturbed periodic orbits and an obstruction to regular $C^1$ first integrals in their neighborhoods. Independently, differential Galois theory applied to the normal variational equation, together with the Ayoul-Zung and Li-Shi criteria, excludes meromorphic $B$-integrability and non-constant meromorphic first integrals near a particular non-equilibrium phase curve for $ab\neq0$. Thus, despite retaining the local structure of the classical Nosé-Hoover oscillator, its trigonometric counterpart exhibits markedly different global dynamics and integrability.

Zero-Hopf bifurcation, periodic orbits and $C^{1}$ non-integrability of the classical Rössler system

We investigate the zero-Hopf bifurcation and the local $C^{1}$-non-integrability of the original Rössler system. First, we characterize the unique zero-Hopf equilibrium of the system and study its perturbation by means of the first-order averaging theory. We prove that, under suitable assumptions on the bifurcation parameters, three distinct families of periodic orbits bifurcate from the zero-Hopf equilibrium, substantially extending the previously known result in which only one bifurcating periodic orbit was obtained. In the second part of the paper, these bifurcating periodic solutions are used to investigate the integrability properties of the Rössler system. By combining the first-order averaging theory with the classical Poincaré criterion for first integrals, we prove that the bifurcating periodic orbits constitute a generic obstruction to the existence of local first integrals of class $C^{1}$. This demonstrates that averaging theory provides not only an effective tool for detecting periodic solutions but also a powerful method for the integrability analysis.

Dynamics, periodic orbits and $C^1$ non-integrability of the ABC flow

We study the Arnold-Beltrami-Childress (ABC) flow in perturbative regimes near its three elementary integrable coordinate axes. Starting from a degenerate family of periodic streamlines of the limiting integrable system, we use first-order averaging to prove the existence of two isolated periodic solutions of the perturbed flow. The three perturbative regimes are related by the cyclic symmetry of the ABC vector field. In each case, the corresponding two-dimensional averaged system possesses two simple equilibria, one elliptic and the other hyperbolic, depending on the sign of the relevant parameter ratio. Poincaré sections illustrate how the degenerate periodic structure of the integrable limit breaks under perturbation and how the isolated periodic orbits predicted by averaging emerge within the surrounding dynamics. These periodic orbits provide the natural link between the perturbative analysis and the integrability problem. The eigenvalues of the linearized averaged system determine the leading-order behavior of the nontrivial characteristic multipliers of the bifurcating periodic solutions. Combining this relation with the Poincaré-Llibre-Valls criterion, we prove that, in a neighborhood of each of these periodic orbits, there exists no nonconstant first integral $H\in C^1$ that is regular along the orbit. The analytical results are further illustrated and confirmed by direct shooting, monodromy-matrix computations, and continuation of the elliptic and hyperbolic branches, demonstrating that the first-order averaging approximation remains quantitatively accurate over a substantially wider parameter range than the strict asymptotic regime.

Dynamics and non-integrability of the Swinging Atwood Machine with a massive string: chaos, periodic orbits and resonance structures

Building upon our previous studies on nonlinear variable-length pendulum systems, we investigate the Swinging Atwood Machine with a massive string. In contrast to the classical model, string inertia introduces a configuration-dependent moment of inertia, leading to a modified Hamiltonian structure and substantially richer dynamics. To uncover the global organization of the phase space, we combine Poincaré sections, bifurcation diagrams, and Lyapunov exponent maps with our recently developed numerical framework, ,,Lyapunov Refined Maps". This approach provides a unified visualization of periodic, quasi-periodic, chaotic, and terminating motions, revealing intricate resonance networks and high-order periodic structures. We investigate the influence of the string mass, system parameters, and energy by constructing Lyapunov maps in parameter and initial-condition spaces and on fixed-energy surfaces. Liouville integrability is studied within the Morales--Ramis theory. By analyzing the normal variational equations along explicit non-stationary radial solutions and applying the Kovacic algorithm, we prove that the differential Galois group is generically SL(2,C), providing a rigorous obstruction to meromorphic Liouville integrability for every nonzero string mass. Thus, the exceptional integrable case of the classical Swinging Atwood Machine is destroyed by the inclusion of string inertia.

Integrability of non-homogeneous Hamiltonian systems with gyroscopic coupling

We study the integrability of a two-dimensional Hamiltonian system with a gyroscopic term and a non-homogeneous potential composed of two homogeneous components of different degrees. The model describes the motion of a particle in a plane under the combined influence of a central (Kepler-type) potential, a uniform magnetic field, and a superposition of homogeneous forces. By combining the Levi--Civita regularization with the so-called coupling constant metamorphosis transformation, and employing differential Galois theory, we derive analytical necessary conditions for integrability in the Liouville sense. They put restrictions on the degrees of homogeneity of the potential terms and their values in particular points. The obtained results encompass and generalize several classical galactic and astrophysical models, including the generalized Hill model, the Hénon--Heiles and Armbruster--Guckenheimer--Kim systems, providing a unified framework for studying non-homogeneous Hamiltonians. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the derived integrability obstructions by proving the non-integrability of these models in the presence of a uniform rotational field. The numerical analysis via the Poincaré cross-sections further confirms the analytical results, illustrating the transition from regular to chaotic dynamics as the rotational and non-homogeneous terms are introduced. Moreover, we show that, without the Kepler-type term, a generalized non-homogeneous extension of the exceptional potential remains integrable. The explicit forms of the first integrals are given.

Integrability of certain Hamiltonian systems in $2D$ variable curvature spaces

The objective of this work is to examine the integrability of Hamiltonian systems in $2D$ spaces with variable curvature of certain types. Based on the differential Galois theory, we announce the necessary conditions of the integrability. They are given in terms of arithmetic restrictions on values of the parameters describing the system. We apply the obtained results to some examples to illustrate that the applicability of the obtained result is easy and effective. Certain new integrable examples are given. The findings highlight the applicability of the differential Galois approach in studying the integrability of Hamiltonian systems in curved spaces, expanding our understanding of nonlinear dynamics and its potential applications.

Dynamics and non-integrability of the variable-length double pendulum: exploring chaos and periodicity via the Lyapunov refined maps

This paper extends our previous work~(Szumiński and Maciejewski, 2024), where we explored the dynamics and integrability of the double-spring pendulum. Here, we investigate the variable-length double pendulum, a three-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian system combining features of the classic double pendulum and the swinging Atwood machine. With its intricate dynamics, this system is crucial for studying nonlinear phenomena such as high-order resonances, chaos, and bifurcations. We address the challenges posed by high-dimensional phase spaces using a novel tool, the \textit{Lyapunov refined maps}, which integrates Poincaré sections, phase-parametric diagrams, and Lyapunov exponents. This framework comprehensively analyzes periodic, quasi-periodic, and chaotic behaviors. By measuring the strength of chaos, it also offers insights into the system's dynamical structure. Additionally, we apply Morales-Ramis theory to examine integrability, leveraging the differential Galois group of variational equations to establish non-integrability conditions. The Kovacic algorithm is used to analyze the solvability of higher-dimensional differential equations, complemented by Lyapunov exponent diagrams to exclude integrable dynamics under certain parameters. Our findings advance the fundamental understanding of variable-length pendulum dynamics, offering new insights and methodologies for further research with potential applications in adaptive robotics, energy harvesting, and biomechanics. Additionally, this work represents a significant step toward proving the long-sought non-integrability of the classical double pendulum.

Dynamics and non-integrability of the double spring pendulum

This paper investigates the dynamics and integrability of the double spring pendulum, which has great importance in studying nonlinear dynamics, chaos, and bifurcations. Being a Hamiltonian system with three degrees of freedom, its analysis presents a significant challenge. To gain insight into the system's dynamics, we employ various numerical methods, including Lyapunov exponents spectra, phase-parametric diagrams, and Poincaré cross-sections. The novelty of our work lies in the integration of these three numerical methods into one powerful tool. We provide a comprehensive understanding of the system's dynamics by identifying parameter values or initial conditions that lead to hyper-chaotic, chaotic, quasi-periodic, and periodic motion, which is a novel contribution in the context of Hamiltonian systems. In the absence of gravitational potential, the system exhibits $S^1$ symmetry, and the presence of an additional first integral was identified using Lyapunov exponents diagrams. We demonstrate the effective utilisation of Lyapunov exponents as a potential indicator of first integrals and integrable dynamics. The numerical analysis is complemented by an analytical proof regarding the non-integrability of the system. This proof relies on the analysis of properties of the differential Galois group of variational equations along specific solutions of the system. To facilitate this analysis, we utilised a newly developed extension of the Kovacic algorithm specifically designed for fourth-order differential equations. Overall, our study sheds light on the intricate dynamics and integrability of the double spring pendulum, offering new insights and methodologies for further research in this field.

A new model of variable-length coupled pendulums: from hyperchaos to superintegrability

This paper studies the dynamics and integrability of a variable-length coupled pendulum system. The complexity of the model is presented by joining various numerical methods, such as the Poincaré cross-sections, phase-parametric diagrams, and Lyapunov exponents spectra. We show that the presented model is hyperchaotic, which ensures its nonintegrability. We gave analytical proof of this fact analyzing properties of the differential Galois group of variational equations along certain particular solutions of the system. We employ the Kovacic algorithm and its extension to dimension four to analyze the differential Galois group. Amazingly enough, in the absence of the gravitational potential and for certain values of the parameters, the system can exhibit chaotic, integrable, as well as superintegrable dynamics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to use the method of Lyapunov exponents in the systematic search for the first integrals of the system. We show how to effectively apply the Lyapunov exponents as an indicator of integrable dynamics. The explicit forms of integrable and superintegrable systems are given. Destructive relativity

Relativistic Hamiltonian equations describing a motion of a point mass in an arbitrary homogeneous potential are considered. For the first time, the necessary integrability conditions for integrability in the Liouville sense for this class of systems are formulated. These conditions are obtained by means of an analysis of the differential Galois groups of variational equations. They are simple and effective in applications. For instance, an application of the necessary integrability conditions for systems with two degrees of freedom shows that relativity almost completely destroys integrability, that is, in almost all cases relativistic versions of integrable systems are not integrable. The paper has been already published in ,,Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science'', and the final journal version is available under the link: https://doi.org/10.1063/5.0140633

Non-integrability of the Huang--Li nonlinear financial model

In this paper we consider Huang--Li nonlinear financial system recently studied in the literature. It has the form of three first order differential equations \[ \dot x=z+(y-a)x,\quad \dot y=1-b y-x^2,\quad \dot z=-x-c z, \] where $(a,b,c)$ are real positive parameters. We show that this system is not integrable in the class of functions meromorphic in variables $(x,y,z)$. We give an analytic proof of this fact analysing properties the of differential Galois group of variational equations along certain particular solutions of the system.

Note on integrability of certain homogeneous Hamiltonian systems in 2D constant curvature spaces

We formulate the necessary conditions for the integrability of a certain family of Hamiltonian systems defined in the constant curvature two-dimensional spaces. Proposed form of potential can be considered as a counterpart of a homogeneous potential in flat spaces. Thanks to this property Hamilton equations admit, in a general case, a particular solution. Using this solution we derive necessary integrability conditions investigating differential Galois group of variational equations.

We consider the system of two material points that interact by elastic forces according to Hooke's law and their motion is restricted to certain curves lying on the plane. The nonintegrability of this system and idea of the proof are communicated. Moreover, the analysis of global dynamics by means of Poincaré cross sections is given and local analysis in the neighborhood of an equilibrium is performed by applying the Birkhoff normal form. Conditions of linear stability are determined and some particular periodic solutions are identified.

Non-integrability of restricted double pendula

We consider two special types of double pendula, with the motion of masses restricted to various surfaces. In order to get quick insight into the dynamics of the considered systems the Poincaré cross sections as well as bifurcation diagrams have been used. The numerical computations show that both models are chaotic which suggest that they are not integrable. We give an analytic proof of this fact checking the properties of the differential Galois group of the system's variational equations along a particular non-equilibrium solution.
