Complex magnetic properties of EuAgAs single crystals

EuAgAs is an antiferromagnetic topological material exhibiting intriguing magnetic behavior. We investigate its structural, magnetic, and local electronic properties using X ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. The results confirm antiferromagnetic ordering below $T_\text{N}$ and reveal pronounced magnetic anisotropy and several field induced metamagnetic transitions. We construct the magnetic phase diagram of EuAgAs, identifying several distinct magnetic regions. The field and temperature dependent behavior observed suggests a noncollinear magnetic structure in the low field regime. The sequence of field induced transitions resembles that observed in centrosymmetric rare earth compounds hosting skyrmion phases, suggesting that competing magnetic interactions may play an important role in stabilizing the observed magnetic states.

Interactions between structural and magnetic domains through the Verwey transition in stoichiometric and doped magnetite

The magnetic response of magnetite as it cycles through the Verwey transition at $T_{\rm V}\approx 120$ K remains incompletely understood, despite numerous studies of both structural and magnetic domains. For example, although the alternating-current susceptibility increases upon heating through the Verwey temperature $T_{\rm V}$, the magnetization may either increase or decrease. Since many intertwined processes occur at $T_{\rm V}$, a multifaceted view of the magnetic changes may help clarify the nature of these processes and establish specific features of the transition as diagnostic tools. To this end, we report measurements of the magnetic response of magnetite upon heating through $T_{\rm V}$ under a wide range of applied-field conditions. We studied synthetic stoichiometric and doped (Zn, Ti, and Al) single crystals, as well as a natural polycrystalline sample, with the aim of explaining how and why the magnetization changes as a function of temperature through $T_{\rm V}$. The magnetic-field-induced reorientation of the monoclinic $c$ axis may broaden the transition, primarily in stoichiometric magnetite. These findings help clarify the mechanism of the transition.

Synthesis of europium-based crystals containing As or P by a flux method: attempts to grow EuAgP single crystals

Europium-based materials are highly attractive due to their diverse range of physical properties. In these studies, we aimed to synthesize single crystals of the potentially topological semimetallic compound EuAgP, which up to this day has only been obtained in polycrystalline form. The flux method was employed for the syntheses, using fluxes such as: Bi, Sn, Pb, and In, in their various ratios. The purpose of using Bi flux was to try synthesizing an analog of EuAgAs single crystals, by fully substituting arsenic with phosphorus. The obtained crystals were characterized by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Despite many unsuccessful attempts to synthesize EuAgP single crystals, the study provides valuable insights into how different fluxes and their ratios influence the final synthesis product. It also underscores the complexity of designing analogs between arsenides and phosphides.

Ambient and high pressure studies of structural, electronic and magnetic properties of EuZn$_2$P$_2$ single crystal

A thorough study of EuZn$_2$P$_2$ single crystals, which were grown from Sn flux, was performed using both bulk (heat capacity, ac susceptibility, dc magnetization, electrical resistivitivity, magnetoresistance) and microscopic (Mössbauer spectroscopy) techniques. Electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility were measured also under high pressure conditions (up to 19 GPa and 9.5 GPa, respectively). Further insight into electronic properties and phonons is provided by ab initio calculations. The results indicate that EuZn$_2$P$_2$ is an antiferromagnet with strong Eu-Eu exchange coupling of ferromagnetic type within the basal plane and weaker antiferromagnetic interaction along the c axis. The Eu magnetic moments are tilted from the basal plane. Hydrostatic pressure strongly affects both magnetic (increase of the Néel temperature) and electronic (suppression of the band gap and semi metallic behavior) properties, indicating a strong interplay of structure with magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom.

Correlation between magnetism and the Verwey transition in magnetite

Seeking to unravel the enigmatic Verwey transition and its interplay with magnetism, we have conducted comprehensive measurements on the temperature-dependent electrical resistivity and magnetic moment of stoichiometric and doped-magnetite single crystals at temperatures reaching 1000 K. These investigations have allowed us to identify the Curie temperature, $T_C$, and other characteristic temperatures of the electrical resistivity. Remarkably, we have identified correlations between these temperatures and the Verwey temperature, $T_V$, indicating that the electrical transport properties and the mechanism of the Verwey transition are closely related to the magnetic properties.

Intercalation-induced states at the Fermi level and the coupling of intercalated magnetic ions to conducting layers in Ni$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$

The magnetic sublayers introduced by intercalation into the host transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) are known to produce various magnetic states. The magnetic sublayers and their magnetic ordering strongly modify the electronic coupling between layers of the host compound. Understanding the roots of this variability is a significant challenge. Here we employ the angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy at various photon energies, the {\it ab initio} electronic structure calculations, and modeling to address the particular case of Ni-intercalate, Ni$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$. We find that the bands around the Fermi level bear the signature of a strong yet unusual hybridization between NbS$_2$ conduction band states and the Ni 3$d$ orbitals. The hybridization between metallic NbS$_2$ layers is almost entirely suppressed in the central part of the Brillouin zone, including the part of the Fermi surface around the $\mathrmΓ$ point. Simultaneously, it gets very pronounced towards the zone edges. It is shown that this behavior is the consequence of the rather exceptional, {\it symmetry imposed}, spatially strongly varying, {\it zero total} hybridization between relevant Ni magnetic orbitals and the neighboring Nb orbitals that constitute the metallic bands. We also report the presence of the so-called $β$-feature, discovered only recently in two other magnetic intercalates with very different magnetic orderings. In Ni$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$, the feature shows only at particular photon energies, indicating its bulk origin. Common to prior observations, it appears as a series of very shallow electron pockets at the Fermi level, positioned along the edge of the Brillouin zone. Unforeseen by {\it ab initio} electronic calculations, and its origin still unresolved, the feature appears to be a robust consequence of the intercalation of 2H-NbS$_2$ with magnetic ions.
