A variational perspective on auxetic metamaterials of checkerboard-type

The main result of this work is a homogenization theorem via variational convergence for elastic materials with stiff checkerboard-type heterogeneities under the assumptions of physical growth and non-self-interpenetration. While the obtained energy estimates are rather standard, determining the effective deformation behavior, or in other words, characterizing the weak Sobolev limits of deformation maps whose gradients are locally close to rotations on the stiff components, is the challenging part. To this end, we establish an asymptotic rigidity result, showing that, under suitable scaling assumptions, the attainable macroscopic deformations are affine conformal contractions. This identifies the composite as a mechanical metamaterial with a negative Poisson's ratio. Our proof strategy is to tackle first an idealized model with full rigidity on the stiff tiles to acquire insight into the mechanics of the model and then transfer the findings and methodology to the model with diverging elastic constants. The latter requires, in particular, a new quantitative geometric rigidity estimate for non-connected squares touching each other at their vertices and a tailored Poincaré type inequality for checkerboard structures.

Validity of the Nonlinear Schrödinger Approximation for the Two-Dimensional Water Wave Problem With and Without Surface Tension in the Arc Length Formulation

We consider the two-dimensional water wave problem in an infinitely long canal of finite depth both with and without surface tension. In order to describe the evolution of the envelopes of small oscillating wave packet-like solutions to this problem the Nonlinear Schrödinger equation can be derived as a formal approximation equation. In recent years, the validity of this approximation has been proven by several authors for the case without surface tension. In this paper, we rigorously justify the Nonlinear Schrödinger approximation for the cases with and without surface tension by proving error estimates over a physically relevant timespan in the arc length formulation of the two-dimensional water wave problem. The error estimates are uniform with respect to the strength of the surface tension, as the height of the wave packet and the surface tension go to zero.

Existence of long time solutions and validity of the Nonlinear Schrödinger approximation for a quasilinear dispersive equation

We consider a nonlinear dispersive equation with a quasilinear quadratic term. We establish two results. First, we show that solutions to this equation with initial data of order $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon)$ in Sobolev norms exist for a time span of order $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^{-2})$ for sufficiently small $\varepsilon$. Secondly, we derive the Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation as a formal approximation equation describing slow spatial and temporal modulations of the envelope of an underlying carrier wave, and justify this approximation with the help of error estimates in Sobolev norms between exact solutions of the quasilinear equation and the formal approximation obtained via the NLS equation. The proofs of both results rely on estimates of appropriate energies whose constructions are inspired by the method of normal-form transforms. To justify the NLS approximation, we have to overcome additional difficulties caused by the occurrence of resonances. We expect that the method developed in the present paper will also allow to prove the validity of the NLS approximation for a larger class of quasilinear dispersive systems with resonances.

On the mathematical description of time-dependent surface water waves

This article provides a survey on some main results and recent developments in the mathematical theory of water waves. More precisely, we briefly discuss the mathematical modeling of water waves and then we give an overview of local and global well-posedness results for the model equations. Moreover, we present reduced models in various parameter regimes for the approximate description of the motion of typical wave profiles and discuss the mathematically rigorous justification of the validity of these models.

Justification of the Nonlinear Schrödinger approximation for a quasilinear Klein-Gordon equation

We consider a nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with a quasilinear quadratic term. The Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation can be derived as a formal approximation equation describing the evolution of the envelopes of slowly modulated spatially and temporarily oscillating wave packet-like solutions to the quasilinear Klein-Gordon equation. It is the purpose of this paper to present a method which allows one to prove error estimates in Sobolev norms between exact solutions of the quasilinear Klein-Gordon equation and the formal approximation obtained via the NLS equation. The paper contains the first validity proof of the NLS approximation of a nonlinear hyperbolic equation with a quasilinear quadratic term by error estimates in Sobolev spaces. We expect that the method developed in the present paper will allow an answer to the relevant question of the validity of the NLS approximation for other quasilinear hyperbolic systems.

The KdV, the Burgers, and the Whitham limit for a spatially periodic Boussinesq model

We are interested in the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), the Burgers, and the Whitham limit for a spatially periodic Boussinesq model with non-small contrast. We prove estimates between the KdV, the Burgers, and the Whitham approximation and true solutions of the original system which guarantee that these amplitude equations make correct predictions about the dynamics of the spatially periodic Boussinesq model over the natural time scales of the amplitude equations. The proof is based on Bloch wave analysis and energy estimates. The result is the first justification result of the KdV, the Burgers, and the Whitham approximation for a dispersive PDE posed in a spatially periodic medium of non-small contrast.

The validity of Whitham's approximation for a Klein-Gordon-Boussinesq model

In this paper we prove the validity of a long wave Whitham approximation for a system consisting of a Boussinesq equation coupled with a Klein-Gordon equation. The proof is based on an infinite series of normal form transformations and an energy estimate. We expect that the concepts of this paper will be a part of a general approximation theory for Whitham's equations which are especially used in the description of slow modulations in time and space of periodic wave trains in general dispersive wave systems.

Analysis of the embedded cell method for the numerical homogenization of metal-ceramic composite materials

In this paper, we analyze the embedding cell method, an algorithm which has been developed for the numerical homogenization of metal-ceramic composite materials. We show the convergence of the iteration scheme of this algorithm and the coincidence of the material properties predicted by the limit with the effective material properties provided by the analytical homogenization theory in three situations, namely for a one dimensional linear elasticity model, a simple one dimensional plasticity model and a two dimensional model of linear hyperelastic isotropic materials with constant shear modulus and slightly varying first Lamé parameter.
