Cancer Detection via Determination of Fractal Cell Dimension

We utilize the fractal dimension of the perimeter surface of cell sections as a new observable to characterize cells of different types. We propose that it is possible to distinguish cancerous from healthy cells with the aid of this new approach. As a first application we show that it is possible to perform this distinction between patients with hairy-cell lymphocytic leukemia and those with normal blood lymphocytes.

Pre-Equilibrium Particle Emission and Critical Exponent Analysis

In two different phase transition models of nuclear fragmentation we show that the emission of pre-equilibrium particles and mixing of events from different classes cannot be ignored in the analysis of nuclear fragmentation data in terms of critical exponents, and we show how the apparent values of the extracted exponents are affected.

Temperatures of Fragment Kinetic Energy Spectra

Multifragmentation reactions without large compression in the initial state (proton-induced reactions, reverse-kinematics, projectile fragmentation) are examined, and it is verified quantitatively that the high temperatures obtained from fragment kinetic energy spectra and lower temperatures obtained from observables such as level population or isotope ratios can be understood in a common framework.

Bose-Enhancement and Pauli-Blocking Effects in Transport Models

The ability of semi-classical transport models to correctly simulate Pauli blocking and Bose enhancement is discussed. In the context of simple quantum mechanical systems, it is shown that using $(1 \pm f)$ enhancements is inadequate to describe systems far from equilibrium. The relaxation of $(1 + f)$ descriptions toward equilibrium is studied both in the context of simple models, including a hot pion gas confined to a box. We give simple estimates for the characteristic number of collisions for a system to relax toward equilibrium.

Coexistence of Regular Undamped Nuclear Dynamics with Intrinsic Chaoticity

We study the conditions under which the nucleons inside a deformed nucleus can undergo chaotic motion. To do this we perform self-consistent calculations in semiclassical approximation utilizing a multipole-multipole interaction of the Bohr-Mottelson type for quadrupole and octupole deformations. For the case of harmonic and non-harmonic static potentials, we find that both multipole deformations lead to regular motion of the collective coordinate, the multipole moment of deformation. However, despite this regular collective motion, we observe chaotic single particle dynamics.

Particle-particle correlations and the space-time structure of heavy ion collisions

The present status of the use of two-particle intensity interferometry as a diagnostic tool to study the space-time dynamics of intermediate energy heavy ion collisions is examined. Calculations for the two-proton and two-pion correlation functions are presented and compared to experiment. The calculations are based on the nuclear Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport theory.
