Self-consistent rate theory for submonolayer surface growth of multi-component systems

The self-consistent rate theory for surface growth in the submonolayer regime is generalized from mono- to multi-component systems, which are formed by codeposition of different types of atoms or molecules. As a new feature, the theory requires the introduction of pair density distributions to enable a symmetric treatment of reactions among different species. The approach is explicitly developed for binary systems and tested against kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. Using a reduced set of rate equations, only a few differential equations need to be solved to obtain good quantitative predictions for island and adatom densities, as well as densities of unstable clusters.

Colloquium: Cluster growth on surfaces - densities, size distributions and morphologies

Understanding and control of cluster and thin film growth on solid surfaces is a subject of intensive research to develop nanomaterials with new physical properties. In this Colloquium we review basic theoretical concepts to describe submonolayer growth kinetics under non-equilibrium conditions. It is shown how these concepts can be extended and further developed to treat self-organized cluster formation in material systems of current interest, such as nanoalloys and molecular clusters in organic thin film growth. The presentation is focused on ideal flat surfaces to limit the scope and to discuss key ideas in a transparent way. Open experimental and theoretical challenges are pointed out.

Phase Transitions in Brownian Pumps

We study stochastic particle transport between two reservoirs along a channel, where the particles are pumped against a bias by a traveling wave potential. It is shown that phase transitions of period-averaged densities or currents occur inside the channel when exclusion interactions between the particles are taken into account. These transitions reflect those known for the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP). We argue that their occurrence is a generic feature of Brownian motors operating in open systems.

Unidirectional hopping transport of interacting particles on a finite chain

Particle transport through an open, discrete 1-D channel against a mechanical or chemical bias is analyzed within a master equation approach. The channel, externally driven by time dependent site energies, allows multiple occupation due to the coupling to reservoirs. Performance criteria and optimization of active transport in a two-site channel are discussed as a function of reservoir chemical potentials, the load potential, interparticle interaction strength, driving mode and driving period. Our results, derived from exact rate equations, are used in addition to test a previously developed time-dependent density functional theory, suggesting a wider applicability of that method in investigations of many particle systems far from equilibrium.

Influence of external magnetic fields on growth of alloy nanoclusters

Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations are performed to study the influence of external magnetic fields on the growth of magnetic fcc binary alloy nanoclusters with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The underlying kinetic model is designed to describe essential structural and magnetic properties of CoPt_3-type clusters grown on a weakly interacting substrate through molecular beam epitaxy. The results suggest that perpendicular magnetic anisotropy can be enhanced when the field is applied during growth. For equilibrium bulk systems a significant shift of the onset temperature for L1_2 ordering is found, in agreement with predictions from Landau theory. Stronger field induced effects can be expected for magnetic fcc-alloys undergoing L1_0 ordering.

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in nanoclusters caused by surface segregation and shape

The growth of binary alloy clusters on a weakly interacting substrate through codeposition of two atomic species is studied by kinetic Monte Carlo simulation. Our model describes salient features of CoPt$_3$-nanoclusters, as obtained recently by the molecular-beam epitaxy technique. The clusters display perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in a temperature window of growth favorable for applications. This temperature window is found to arise from the interplay of Pt surface segregation and aspect ratio for cluster shapes. Conclusions are drawn how to optimize growth parameters with respect to PMA.

Monte Carlo Study of Ordering and Domain Growth in a Class of fcc-Alloy Models

Ordering processes in fcc-alloys with composition A_3B (like Cu_3Au, Cu_3Pd, CoPt_3 etc.) are investigated by Monte Carlo simulation within a class of lattice models based on nearest-neighbor (NN) and second-neighbor (NNN) interactions. Using an atom-vacancy exchange algorithm, we study the growth of ordered domains following a temperature quench below the ordering spinodal. For zero NNN-interactions we observe an anomalously slow growth of the domain size L(t) \sim t^α, where α\sim 1/4 within our accessible timescales. With increasing NNN-interactions domain growth becomes faster and αgradually approaches the value 1/2 as predicted by the conventional Lifshitz-Allen-Cahn theory.

Effective medium theory of conduction in stretched polymer electrolytes

Recent experimental observations of anisotropic conductivity in stretched polymer electrolytes films of the polyethylene oxide family are discussed. The main experimental observations, enhancement of the ionic diffusion and conductivity in the stretch direction and decrease in these transport coefficients in the normal direction are interpreted in terms of an effective two-phase model. This two-phase model is based on the idea that a highly conducting phase is associated with oriented molecular structures which are surrounded by poorly conducting boundary regions. This model is evaluated within the framework of differential effective medium theory (DEMT). Under stretching these regions change from spherical to prolate-spheroidal shapes. The computed dependence of the DC conductivity tensor and its AC counterpart on the stretch parameters is in good agreement with experimental results.

Monte Carlo simulation of subsurface ordering kinetics in an fcc-alloy model

Within the atom-vacancy exchange mechanism in a nearest-neighbor interaction model we investigate the kinetics of surface-induced ordering processes close to the (001) surface of an fcc A_3B-alloy. After a sudden quench into the ordered phase with a final temperature above the ordering spinodal, T_f > T_sp, the early time kinetics is dominated by a segregation front which propagates into the bulk with nearly constant velocity. Below the spinodal, T_f < T_sp, motion of the segregation wave reflects a coarsening process which appears to be slower than predicted by the Lifschitz-Allen-Cahn law. In addition, in the front-penetrated region lateral growth differs distinctly from perpendicular growth, as a result of the special structure of antiphase boundaries near the surface. Our results are compared with recent experiments on the subsurface ordering kinetics at Cu_3Au (001).

Exact Density Functionals in One Dimension

We propose a new and general method for deriving exact density functionals in one dimension for lattice gases with finite-range pairwise interactions. Corresponding continuum functionals are derived by applying a proper limiting procedure. The method is based on a generalised Markov property, which allows us to set up a rather transparent scheme that covers all previously known exact functionals for one-dimensional lattice gas or fluid systems. Implications for a systematic construction of approximate density functionals in higher dimensions are pointed out.

Wall induced density profiles and density correlations in confined Takahashi lattice gases

We propose a general formalism to study the static properties of a system composed of particles with nearest neighbor interactions that are located on the sites of a one-dimensional lattice confined by walls (``confined Takahashi lattice gas''). Linear recursion relations for generalized partition functions are derived, from which thermodynamic quantities, as well as density distributions and correlation functions of arbitrary order can be determined in the presence of an external potential. Explicit results for density profiles and pair correlations near a wall are presented for various situations. As a special case of the Takahashi model we consider in particular the hard rod lattice gas, for which a system of nonlinear coupled difference equations for the occupation probabilities has been presented previously by Robledo and Varea. A solution of these equations is given in terms of the solution of a system of independent linear equations. Moreover, for zero external potential in the hard rod system we specify various central regions between the confining walls, where the occupation probabilities are constant and the correlation functions are translationally invariant in the canonical ensemble. In the grand canonical ensemble such regions do not exist.
