Multiquark-Adequate QCD Sum Rules: the Case of Flavour-Exotic Tetraquarks

Frequently, theoretical discussions of multiquark hadron states prove to be contaminated or even dominated by contributions of conventional hadrons. For the approach to QCD bound states in terms of QCD sum rules, we show how to get rid of all unwanted ordinary-hadron ballast by boiling down the traditional QCD sum-rule formalism to the nonconventional aspects in the focus of interest.

Tetraquark-adequate QCD sum rules for quark-exchange processes

We consider quark-hadron duality relations and QCD sum rules for correlators involving exotic tetraquark currents, here specializing to the case of quark-exchange processes. We point out the differences they exhibit with respect to the cases involving ordinary bilinear quark currents. Based on the observation that only diagrams possessing at least four-quark singularities can contribute to the formation of tetraquark states, we show that the quark-hadron duality relations and the corresponding sum rules split into two non-overlapping relations. The ultimate tetraquark-adequate QCD sum rule is concerned only with one of these relations, in which the operator product expansion starts with diagrams of order $O(α_s^2)$.

Semirelativistic Bound States: (Pseudo-) Spinless-Salpeter Approaches Reassessed

Relativistic quantum field theory offers, in form of the homogeneous Bethe-Salpeter framework, a (Poincaré-covariant) description of bound states in terms of their underlying theory's fundamental degrees of freedom. In view of the intrinsic complexity of this approach, simplifications have been sought and abundantly found. The significance of these latter approximations may be estimated by comparing their predictions with (easily inferable) rigorous constraints on the bound-state spectra, such as existence, number and location of discrete eigenstates. The application of these techniques to selected proposed bound-state equations is exemplified for a large class of generalizations of the Hellmann potential frequently employed in several areas of science such as physics and chemistry.

Flavour-Exotic Tetraquarks in Large-$N_{\rm c}$ QCD: Do They Exist?

Flavour-exotic tetraquark mesons, by definition bound states of two quarks and two antiquarks of four mutually different quark flavours, are, for given Lorentz features, subject to two incompatible constraints: On the one hand, within quantum chromodynamics a formation of compact tetraquark states is most easily envisaged by merging two colour-antisymmetric two-quark clusters, a diquark and an antidiquark. This path, however, leads to merely a single tetraquark state of chosen Lorentz characteristics. On the other hand, in the limit of the number of colour degrees of freedom growing beyond bounds, internal consistency at leading order calls for the presence of (at least) two of such tetraquark states of identical quark-flavour composition. The failure of attempts to reconcile these two contradictory insights suggests the nonexistence of compact flavour-exotic tetraquark mesons.

Tetraquark-Adequate QCD Sum Rules

With the experimental observation of several credible candidates for multiquark hadrons, the latter states re-entered the focus of interest of theoretical strong-interaction physics. Proper treatment of hadronic bound states by quantum chromodynamics, QCD, the quantum field theory governing all strong interactions, necessitates a nonperturbative approach. A well-established framework of this kind is provided by QCD sum rules relating hadron features to the parameters of QCD. Conceptual reconsideration, however, reveals that, in order to really match the peculiarities of multiquarks, the long-standing conventional QCD sum-rule techniques evidently must be subjected to considerable modification. The so far overlooked necessity for such adaptations is most easily demonstrated for the case of least complexity, that is, for tetraquarks, bound states of two quarks and two antiquarks.

Tetraquark-adequate formulation of QCD sum rules

We study details of QCD sum rules à la Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov for exotic tetraquark states. We point out that duality relations for correlators involving exotic currents have fundamental differences compared with the duality relations for the correlators of bilinear quark currents: namely, the $O(1)$ and $O(α_s)$ [$α_s$ the strong coupling constant] terms in the operator product expansion for the exotic correlators exactly cancel against the contributions of the two-meson states on the hadron side of QCD sum rules. As a result, the tetraquark properties turn out to be related to the specific non-factorizable parts of the exotic Green functions; the relevant non-factorizable diagrams start at order $O(α_s^2)$.

The Spinless Relativistic Hellmann Problem

We compile some easily deducible information on the discrete eigenvalue spectra of spinless Salpeter equations encompassing, besides a relativistic kinetic term, interactions which are expressible as superpositions of an attractive Coulomb potential and an either attractive or repulsive Yukawa potential and, hence, generalizations of the Hellmann potential employed in several areas of science. These insights should provide useful guidelines to all attempts of finding appropriate descriptions of bound states by (semi-) relativistic equations of motion.

Compact Flavour-Exotic Tetraquarks in Large-${N_{\rm c}}$ QCD - To Be or Not to Be?

We analyse exotic tetraquark mesons - bound states formed by two quarks and two antiquarks - for the specific case of four different quark flavours within the framework of a well-defined limit of quantum chromodynamics characterized by the correlated growth without bound of the number of colour degrees of freedom and approach to zero of the coupling constant of the strong interactions. On the one hand, the assumption that the tetraquarks of the kind defined above show up, as poles in the amplitudes for the scattering of two ordinary mesons with flavour quantum numbers that match those of these tetraquarks, already at lowest possible order in an expansion in inverse powers of the number of colours implies the existence of two types of flavour-exotic tetraquarks, distinguishable by their dominant transitions to two ordinary mesons. On the other hand, we are aware of merely a single, unique colour-singlet arrangement of two quarks and two antiquarks capable of tolerating a compact flavour-exotic tetraquark, a bound state of colour-antisymmetric diquark and antidiquark. In view of these two clearly contradictory observations, we are led to the plausible conclusion that, within the considered limiting case of quantum chromodynamics, a conceivable explanation of the riddle might consist in the non-existence of any flavour-exotic tetraquarks in form of narrow states.

Strong Isospin Breaking in the Decay Constants of Heavy-Light Mesons from Local-Duality QCD Sum Rules

We explore, by a rather peculiar limit of QCD sum rules subject to a Borel transformation (realized by allowing the related Borel mass parameter to approach infinity), how the small difference of the masses of up and down quark translates into the leptonic decay constants of pseudoscalar or vector heavy-light mesons. For the charmed and bottom mesons, we find that the decay constants of their lowest-lying charged and neutral representatives should differ by an amount of the order of 1 MeV.

Are there narrow flavor-exotic tetraquarks in large-$N_c$ QCD?

A salient feature shared by all tetraquark candidates observed in experiment is the absence of flavor-exotic states of the type $\bar a b\bar c d$, with four different quark flavors. This phenomenon may be understood from the properties of large-$N_c$ QCD: On the one hand, consistency conditions for flavor-exotic Green functions, potentially containing these tetraquark poles, require the existence of two tetraquarks $T_A$ and $T_B$: each of them should decay dominantly via a single two-meson channel, $T_A\to M_{\bar a b}M_{\bar c d}$ and $T_B\to M_{\bar a d}M_{\bar c b}$, with suppressed rates $T_A\to M_{\bar a d}M_{\bar c b}$ and $T_B\to M_{\bar a b}M_{\bar c d}$. On the other hand, we have at hand only one diquark-antidiquark flavor structure $(\bar a \bar c)(b d)$ that might produce a compact tetraquark bound state. Taking into account that the diquark-antidiquark structure is the only viable candidate for a compact tetraquark state, one concludes that it is impossible to have two different narrow tetraquarks decaying dominantly into different two-meson channels. This contradiction suggests that large-$N_c$ QCD does not support the existence of narrow flavor-exotic tetraquarks. This argument does not rule out the possible existence of broad molecular-type flavor-exotic states, or of molecular-type bound states lying very close to the two-meson thresholds.

Bethe-Salpeter-Motivated Modelling of Pseudo-Goldstone Pseudoscalar Mesons

We apply a description of bound states of fermion and antifermion by means of our approximation to the Bethe-Salpeter formalism that retains part of the information on relativistic effects provided by the full fermion propagator to the lightest pseudoscalar mesons. Therein, the pseudo-Goldstone nature of the latter quark-antiquark bound states is taken into account by appropriately formulated effective interactions. Scrutinizing the predictions of this bound-state approach for meson masses, decay constants and in-meson condensates by relying on a generalized Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation shows that the light-quark-mass values required for agreement are all in the right ballpark.

Open-Flavour Mesons from the Angle of Bethe, Dyson, Salpeter, Schwinger, et al

Recently, we completed a comprehensive investigation of a huge part of the entire meson spectrum by considering both quarkonia and open-flavour mesons by means of a single common framework which unites the homogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation that describes mesons as quark-antiquark bound states and the Dyson-Schwinger equation that governs the full quark propagator: Adopting two (as a matter of fact, not extremely diverse) models that attempt to grasp all principal aspects of the effective strong interactions entering identically in both these equations, we derived within this unique setup, for all mesons analysed, their masses and leptonic decay constants as well as, for the pseudoscalar ones among these mesons, their in-hadron condensates. Here, as a kind of promotion or teaser, we give but a few examples of the resulting collections of data, laying the main emphasis on the dependence of our insights on the effective-interaction model underlying all such outcomes.

Local-duality QCD sum rules for strong isospin breaking in the decay constants of heavy-light mesons

We discuss the leptonic decay constants of heavy--light mesons by means of Borel QCD sum~rules in the local-duality (LD) limit of infinitely large Borel mass parameter. In this limit, for an appropriate choice of the invariant structures in the QCD correlation functions, all vacuum-condensate contributions vanish and all nonperturbative effects are contained in only one quantity, the effective threshold. We study properties of the LD effective thresholds in the limits of large heavy-quark mass $m_Q$ and small light-quark mass $m_q$. In the heavy-quark limit, we clarify the role played by the radiative corrections in the effective threshold for reproducing the pQCD expansion of the decay constants of pseudoscalar and vector mesons. We show that the dependence of the meson decay constants on $m_q$ arises predominantly (at the level of 70--80%) from the calculable $m_q$-dependence of the perturbative spectral densities. Making use of the lattice QCD results for the decay constants of nonstrange and strange pseudoscalar and vector heavy mesons, we obtain solid predictions for the decay constants of heavy--light mesons as functions of $m_q$ in the range from a few to 100 MeV and evaluate the corresponding strong isospin-breaking effects: $f_{D^+} - f_{D^0}=(0.96 \pm 0.09) ~ {\rm MeV}$, $f_{D^{*+}} - f_{D^{*0}}= (1.18 \pm 0.35) ~ {\rm MeV}$, $f_{B^0} - f_{B^+}=(1.01 \pm 0.10) ~ {\rm MeV}$, $f_{B^{*0}} - f_{B^{*+}}=(0.89 \pm 0.30) ~ {\rm MeV}$.

Compact Exotic Tetraquark Mesons in Large-$N_c$ QCD

We embark on systematic explorations of the behaviour of tetraquark mesons (colour-singlet bound states of two quarks and two antiquarks) in the (idealized) limit of a large number $N_c$ of colour degrees of freedom of quantum chromodynamics. Considering the scattering of two ordinary mesons into two ordinary mesons, we start off with formulating a set of selection criteria that should enable us to unambiguously single out precisely those contributions to all encountered scattering amplitudes that potentially will develop tetraquark poles. Assuming that tetraquark mesons do exist and, if so, emerge in the contributions compatible with our criteria at largest admissible order of $N_c$, we deduce, for the categories of tetraquarks that exhibit either four or only two different open quark flavours, that the decay rates of these tetraquark types are, at least, of order $1/N_c^2$ and that internal consistency requires all the members of the first species to exist pairwise, distinguishable by their favoured two-ordinary-meson decay channels.

Global Dyson-Schwinger-Bethe-Salpeter Approach to Mesons with Open Flavour

Exploiting an interplay of the Bethe-Salpeter equation enabling us to regard mesons as bound states of quark and antiquark and the Dyson-Schwinger equation controlling the dressed quark propagator, we amend existing studies of quarkonia by a comprehensive description of open-flavour mesons composed of all conceivable combinations of quark flavour. Employing throughout a fixed set of model parameters, we predict some basic characteristics of these mesons, i.e., their masses, leptonic decay constants and corresponding in-hadron condensates entering in a generalized formulation of the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation.
