Local-Duality QCD Sum Rules for Pion Elastic and (pi^0, eta, eta') to gamma gamma* Transition Form Factors Revisited

The local-duality formulation of QCD sum rules allows for the prediction of hadronic form factors without knowledge of the subtle details of their structure. With the aid of this formalism, we take a fresh look at the behaviours of the charged-pion elastic form factor and of the form factors entering in the transitions of the ground-state neutral unflavoured pseudoscalar mesons pi^0, eta, eta' to one real and one virtual photon within a broad range of momentum transfers Q^2. The uncertainties induced by the approximations inherent to this local-duality approach are estimated by studying, in parallel to QCD, quantum-mechanical potential models, where the exact form factors, obtained by solving the Schrödinger equation, may be compared with the corresponding local-duality sum-rule results. For Q^2 larger than 5-6 GeV^2, we judge the predictions of the simplest local-duality model to be reliable and expect their accuracy to improve very fast with increasing Q^2. The large-Q^2 prediction for the pion elastic form factor should be approached already at moderate momentum transfer squared of approximately 4-8 GeV^2; large deviations from its local-duality behaviour for Q^2 = 20-50 GeV^2, predicted by some hadron-structure models, seem rather unlikely. The (eta, eta') to gamma + gamma* form factors deduced from the simplest local-duality approach exhibit excellent agreement with experiment. In startling contrast, BaBar measurements of the pi^0 to gamma + gamma* form factor imply local-duality violations which even rise with Q^2.

Accuracy of the pion elastic form factor extracted from a local-duality sum rule

We analyze the accuracy of the pion elastic form factor predicted by a local-duality (LD) version of dispersive sum rules. To probe the precision of this theoretical approach, we adopt potential models with interactions that involve both Coulomb and confining terms. In this case, the exact form factor may be obtained from the solution of the Schroedinger equation and confronted with the LD sum rule results. We use parameter values appropriate for hadron physics and observe that, independently of the details of the confining interaction, the deviation of the LD form factor from the exact form factor culminates in the region Q^2~4-6 GeV^2. For larger Q^2, the accuracy of the LD description increases rather fast with Q^2. A similar picture is expected for QCD. For the pion form factor, existing data suggest that the LD limit may be reached already at the relatively low values Q^2=4-10 GeV^2. Thus, large deviations of the pion form factor from the behaviour predicted by LD QCD sum rules for higher values of Q^2, as found by some recent analyses, appear to us quite improbable. New accurate data on the pion form factor at Q^2=4-10 GeV^2 expected soon from JLab will have important implications for the behaviour of the pion form factor in a broad Q^2 range up to asymptotically large values of Q^2.

Geometric spectral inversion for singular potentials

The function E = F(v) expresses the dependence of a discrete eigenvalue E of the Schroedinger Hamiltonian H = -Δ+ vf(r) on the coupling parameter v. We use envelope theory to generate a functional sequence \{f^{[k]}(r)\} to reconstruct f(r) from F(v) starting from a seed potential f^{[0]}(r). In the power-law or log cases the inversion can be effected analytically and is complete in just two steps. In other cases convergence is observed numerically. To provide concrete illustrations of the inversion method it is first applied to the Hulthén potential, and it is then used to invert spectral data generated by singular potentials with shapes of the form f(r) = -a/r + b\sgn(q)r^q and f(r) = -a/r + b\ln(r), a, b > 0. For the class of attractive central potentials with shapes f(r) = g(r)/r, with g(0)< 0 and g'(r)\ge 0, we prove that the ground-state energy curve F(v) determines f(r) uniquely.

Pion elastic and $(π^0,η,η')\toγγ^*$ transition form factors in a broad range of momentum transfers

We analyze $F_π(Q^2)$ and $F_{Pγ}(Q^2)$, $P=π,η,η'$, within the local-duality (LD) version of QCD sum rules, which allows one to obtain predictions for hadron form factors in a broad range of momentum transfers. To probe the accuracy of this approximate method, we consider, in parallel to QCD, a potential model: in this case, the exact form factors may be calculated from the solutions of the Schrödinger equation and confronted with the results from the quantum-mechanical LD sum rule. On the basis of our quantum-mechanical analysis we conclude that the LD sum rule is expected to give reliable predictions for $F_π(Q^2)$ and $F_{πγ}(Q^2)$ in the region $Q^2 \ge 5-6$ GeV$^2$. Moreover, the accuracy of the method improves rather fast with growing $Q^2$ in this region. For the pion elastic form factor, the data at small $Q^2$ indicate that the LD limit may be reached already at relatively low values of momentum transfers, $Q^2\approx 4-8$ GeV$^2$; we therefore conclude that large deviations from LD in the region $Q^2=20-50$ GeV$^2$ reported in some recent theoretical analyses seem unlikely. The data on the ($η,η')\toγγ^*$ form factors meet very well the expectations from the LD model. Surprisingly, the {\sc BaBar} results for the $π^0\toγγ^*$ form factor imply a violation of LD growing with $Q^2$ even at $Q^2\approx 40$ GeV$^2$, at odds with the $η,η'$ case and the experience from quantum mechanics.

Improved QCD Sum-Rule Approach to Heavy-Meson Decay Constants

A visible improvement of the QCD sum-rule framework, achieved only recently by a slightly more sophisticated consideration of the hadron excitations and continuum, is applied to the extraction of the decay constants of heavy-light pseudoscalar mesons from two-point correlators of heavy-light pseudoscalar currents. This analysis is carried out entirely in terms of the running heavy-quark mass, for which the perturbative expansion exhibits a passable convergence. Our main concern is to gain control over both statistical and systematic uncertainties of the extracted decay constants, the former being induced by the QCD parameter values requested for input, the latter arising from the intrinsically limited accuracy of the QCD sum-rule techniques.

Pion Elastic and pi to gamma gamma* Transition Form Factors at Large Momentum Transfers

We present the results of our recent analyses of the form factors F_pi(Q^2) and F_{P gamma}(Q^2), P = pi, eta, eta', within the local-duality version of QCD sum rules. To probe the expected accuracy of this method, we consider, in parallel to QCD, a quantum-mechanical potential model. In the latter case, the exact form factor may be calculated from the solutions of the Schrödinger equation and confronted with the result from the quantum-mechanical local-duality sum rule. We find that the local-duality sum rule is expected to yield reliable predictions for both F_pi(Q^2) and F_{pi gamma}(Q^2) in the region Q^2 > 5-6 GeV^2. Moreover, in this region the accuracy of this approach improves rather fast with increasing Q^2. For the elastic form factor F_pi(Q^2), we are therefore forced to conclude that large deviations from the local-duality limit in the region Q^2 = 20-50 GeV^2 reported in some recent theoretical studies seem to us unlikely. The data on the eta, eta' to gamma gamma* transition form factors meet pretty well the predictions of a "local-duality model." Interestingly, recent results for the pi to gamma gamma* transition form factor hint at a violation of local duality rising with Q^2; this is at odds with the eta and eta' cases and all our experience from quantum mechanics.

The puzzle of the π-> γγ* transition form factor

We study the $P\toγ\,γ^*$ ($P=π^0,η,η'$) transition form factors by means of the local-duality (LD) version of QCD sum rules. For the case of $η$ and $η'$, the conventional LD model provides a good description of the existing data. However, for the $π$ form factor we find disagreement with recent BaBar results for high $Q^2$ even though the accuracy of the LD approximation is expected to increase with $Q^2$. It remains mysterious why the $η$ and $η'$ form factors to virtual photons, on the one hand, and the $π$ form factor, on the other hand, show a qualitatively different behaviour corresponding to a rising with $Q^2$ violation of local duality in the pion case. In a quantum mechanical example we show that, for a bound-state size of about 1 fm, the LD sum rule provides an accurate prediction for the form factor for $Q^2\ge$ a few GeV$^2$.

Unprejudiced Look at Effective Continuum Thresholds in Borel Dispersive Sum Rules

Dispersive sum rules constitute long-standing tools for extracting hadron features from QCD. We estimate the systematic uncertainties induced by assuming quark-hadron duality and improve the accuracy of the resulting predictions by elevating the effective thresholds involved in this approximation from constants to functions of momenta and a parameter entering upon Borel transformation. A rigorous scrutiny of the applicability of our proposed sum-rule modifications to QCD gives us great confidence that our sum-rule alterations will prove to be fruitful for hadron phenomenology.

OPE, charm-quark mass, and decay constants of D and D_s mesons from QCD sum rules

We present a sum-rule extraction of the decay constants of the charmed mesons D and D_s from the two-point correlator of pseudoscalar currents. First, we compare the perturbative expansion for the correlator and the decay constant performed in terms of the pole and the running MSbar masses of the charm quark. The perturbative expansion in terms of the pole mass shows no signs of convergence whereas reorganizing this very expansion in terms of the MSbar mass leads to a distinct hierarchy of the perturbative expansion. Furthermore, the decay constants extracted from the pole-mass correlator turn out to be considerably smaller than those obtained by means of the MSbar-mass correlator. Second, making use of the OPE in terms of the MSbar mass, we determine the decay constants of both D and D_s mesons with an emphasis on the uncertainties in these quantities related both to the input QCD parameters and to the limited accuracy of the method of sum rules.

Heavy-Quark Mass and Heavy-Meson Decay Constants from QCD Sum Rules

We present a sum-rule extraction of heavy-meson decay constants from the two-point correlator of heavy-light pseudoscalar currents. Our main concern is to control the uncertainties of the decay constants, induced by both input QCD parameters and limited accuracy of the sum-rule method. Gaining this control is possible by applying our novel procedure for the extraction of hadron observables utilizing Borel-parameter-depending dual thresholds. For the charmed mesons, we obtain f_D = 206.2 \pm 7.3 (OPE) \pm 5.1 (syst) MeV and f_{D_s} = 245.3 \pm 15.7 (OPE) \pm 4.5 (syst) MeV. For the beauty mesons, the decay constants prove to be extremely sensitive to the exact value of the b-quark MS-bar mass m_b(m_b). Matching our sum-rule prediction for f_B to the lattice findings, the very accurate b-mass value m_b(m_b) = 4.245 \pm 0.025 GeV is found, which yields f_B = 193.4 \pm 12.3 (OPE) \pm 4.3 (syst) MeV and f_{B_s} = 232.5 \pm 18.6 (OPE) \pm 2.4 (syst) MeV.

OPE, Heavy-Quark Mass, and Heavy-Meson Decay Constants from QCD Sum Rules

We present a sum-rule extraction of the decay constants of heavy-light mesons from the two-point correlator of pseudoscalar currents. To this end, we compare the perturbative expansions for the correlator and the decay constant performed in terms of either the pole mass or the running MS-bar mass of the heavy quark. The perturbative expansion expressed in terms of the pole mass exhibits no sign of convergence whereas reorganizing this very expansion in terms of the MS-bar mass yields a rather clear hierarchy of the perturbative contributions. Accordingly, the decay constants extracted from the pole-mass correlator turn out to be considerably smaller than those extracted from its MS-bar-mass counterpart. Then, making use of the OPE in terms of the MS-bar mass we derive the decay constants of heavy mesons with emphasis on acquiring control over the uncertainties in the decay constants, related both to the input QCD parameters and to the limited accuracy of the method of sum rules. Gaining this control has become possible due to the application of our novel procedure for extracting hadron observables based on dual thresholds which depend on the Borel parameter.

Quark-Hadron Duality and Effective Continuum Thresholds in Dispersive Sum Rules

A novel procedure for extracting hadron characteristics from QCD sum rules, based on effective continuum thresholds (necessary for the implementation of quark-hadron duality) which may depend on the involved momenta and on the Borel parameter(s), enables us to quantify the uncertainties induced by the quark-hadron duality approximation and to achieve a significantly higher accuracy of our predictions for the properties of hadronic bound states.

Analytic Quest for Confining Interaction Kernels in Instantaneous Bethe-Salpeter Equations

The Salpeter equation, a standard tool in hadron physics, constitutes a well-defined three-dimensional approximation to the Bethe-Salpeter formalism for the description of bound states within quantum field theories. However, if confinement is implemented in a too careless manner, the Salpeter equation might predict unstable states where only truly bound states are expected. A systematic spectral analysis of the Salpeter equation might serve to single out those Bethe-Salpeter interaction kernels which indeed yield stable bound states, with associated energy eigenvalues belonging to a real discrete spectrum bounded from below.

Heavy-meson decay constants from QCD sum rules

We sketch a recent sum-rule extraction of the decay constants of the heavy pseudoscalar mesons D, D_s, B, and B_s from the two-point correlator of heavy-light pseudoscalar currents [1]. Our main emphasis lies on the control over all the uncertainties in the decay constants, related both to the input QCD parameters and to the limited accuracy of the method of sum rules. Gaining this control has become possible by application of our new procedure of extracting hadron observables based on a dual threshold depending on the Borel parameter. For the charmed-meson decay constants, we find f_D=206.2\pm 7.3(OPE) \pm 5.1(syst) MeV, f_Ds=245.3\pm 15.7(OPE) \pm 4.5(syst) MeV. For the beauty mesons, the decay constants turn out to be extremely sensitive to the precise value of the MSbar mass of the b-quark, mb(mb). By requiring our sum-rule estimate to match the average of the lattice determinations of f_B, we extract the rather accurate value mb(mb)=(4.245\pm 0.025) GeV. Feeding this parameter value into our sum-rule formalism leads to the beauty-meson decay constants f_B = 193.4 \pm 12.3(OPE) \pm 4.3(syst) MeV, f_Bs =232.5 \pm 18.6(OPE) \pm 2.4(syst) MeV.

Decay constants of heavy mesons from QCD sum rules

We present a sum-rule extraction of the decay constants of the D, Ds, B, and Bs mesons from the two-point correlator of heavy-light pseudoscalar currents [1]. Our main emphasis is laid on the control over the uncertainties in the decay constants, related both to the input QCD parameters and to the limited accuracy of the method of sum rules. Gaining this control has become possible due to the application of our novel procedure for extracting hadron observables based on a dual threshold depending on the Borel parameter. For charmed mesons, we obtain f_D=206.2\pm 7.3 (OPE)\pm 5.1 (syst) MeV and f_Ds=245.3\pm 15.7 (OPE) \pm 4.5 (syst) MeV. For beauty mesons, the decay constants turn out to be extremely sensitive to the precise value of the MSbar mass of the b-quark, mb(mb). By requiring our sum-rule estimate to match the average of lattice determinations of f_B, a very accurate value is extracted, mb(mb)=4.245\pm 0.025 GeV, yielding f_B = 193.4 \pm 12.3 (OPE) \pm 4.3 (syst) MeV and f_Bs = 232.5 \pm 18.6 (OPE) \pm 2.4 (syst) MeV.
